Passage 1
2022-2023学年下学期·江苏淮安·淮安区高二期中调研测试
I felt so nervous. It was the day of my interview. I woke up early just to make sure I would have time to get prepared. It felt like a normal Monday, but for me, this day was very important. There was a lot of pressure.
After showering, I put on the outfit I had carefully chosen and laid out the night before. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. “You can do this,” I encouraged myself. I ate breakfast and fed my cat. I made my way to the bus stop and waited patiently. Aside from the rapid tapping of my right foot, no one could tell that I was so nervous.
When I arrived at my stop, I walked to the office. The building was so tall and I felt small in its shadow. But I also felt hopeful. This will be a great opportunity, I thought. And what is there to lose Looking down at my watch, I noticed that I was early. This allowed plenty of time to review my resume (简历) and further prepare myself for the interview.
The doors of the building were impressive, all steel and glass and very modern.
When I walked in someone showed me the waiting area and offered me a cup of coffee. After a few moments, a man in a nice suit told me to join him. As we walked toward the elevators, I began to feel anxious. The palms of my hands began to sweat. It seemed like an hour had passed before I heard the “ding” of the elevators opening.
We got into the elevator, full of men and women dressed to the nines.
“It’s quite a large office,” the man said to me. I chuckled nervously. I could feel myself getting warmer. I couldn’t wait to hear that comforting “ding” that signaled an escape.
As the elevator climbed, I again nervously checked my watch. Just as I looked down, it happened.
Paragraph 1:
The elevator came to a stop between floors.

Passage 2
2022-2023学年下学期·江苏海门·高二期中试卷
My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her own lifetime, which now stretches to 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. She picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table. “There you go,” she said. “You do know what you’re doing with these things, don’t you ”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient. I was amazed it was still going.
“Yes,” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it home with you and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use my new phone, such as getting on the internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box and stood up. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe(滑动屏幕). “What do you mean swipe ” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go home when she was angry and upset.

Passage 3
2022-2023学年下学期·江苏无锡·市北中学高二期中试题
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”
Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

It was the last game of the season. Cali had been playing soccer all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players. As much as she tried, though, Cali still had not scored one single goal.
“Don’t give up, “said her coach. He showed Cali and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Cali was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit soccer for good.
“Don’t give up, “said Uncle George and Aunt Lisa. But it was half-time, and Cali was feeling upset. She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. Maybe she would try a different sport next summer.
The break was over and the referee (裁判) blew her whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Cali heard her aunt whisper in her ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it. “Cali took a deep breath. Even if she didn’t get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of.
The yellow team was pretty good, but Cali’s blue team was fast. Cali was off to the side when the ball headed her way. She ran over to it and kicked it. She watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. Cali sighed (叹气) .
Cali decided she’d wait until the game was over and then she was going to hang up her soccer shoes for good. Cali started daydreaming about becoming a hip-hop dancer instead. She was woken from her daydream by some music that was definitely not hip-hop. It was the sweet, happy jingle of the ice cream truck.

Spelling was my favorite subject in fourth grade. Every week I memorized the new words, and by Friday I was prepared to take the spelling test. I usually got all the words right. My teacher, Mrs Casazza, usually wrote “Excellent!”on the top of my paper.
One day, Mrs Casazza announced to the class that we would have a spelling bee (拼字比赛) on Thursday. “Oh, no,” I thought. Last month when I had to stand in the front of the class and give a book report, my arms shook so badly that it was hard to read my paper. I was very conscious of the twenty-seven pairs of eyes on me and all I wanted to do was to run back to my seat. A spelling bee would be even worse. I wouldn’t have a paper to read from!
After lunch on Thursday, Mrs Casazza explained the rules. “Say the word, spell it, and then say it again,” she said. “Be careful not to repeat any letters.” One at a time, she pronounced a word for each student to spell. Two boys made mistakes right away and had to sit down. With sweaty hands, I waited for my turn. After the girl next to me correctly spelled her word, Mrs Casazza called my name and said “Your word is ‘echo.’”
“Echo,” I started. Then my mind went blank. Everyone was looking at me, waiting for me to speak out the first letter. But I couldn’t think. My face got hot and I was unable to finish the word. Mrs Casazza had to let me sit down. Afterwards, Mrs Casazza said it worked so well that she decided to have a spelling bee every Thursday.
Afraid that I’d mess up again, I didn’t want to go to school the following Thursday. “What’s wrong ” my mother asked. I told her about the spelling bee and explained that I was nervous when they were all looking at me. “You’re a good speller and you do so well in your tests, so just believe in yourself,” Mum said.

On Christmas Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves. “Where are they ” Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat. George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00 ten years ago. They were soft and warn and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked like new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation.to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
“Society has changed, people have changed,” he murmured to himself. “Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.

The boys and girls picked up the bus to Fort Lauderdale. Vingo was on board from the beginning.
As the bus passed through Jersey they began to notice that Vingo never moved. He sat in front of the young people, frozen into silence.
Somewhere outside of Washington, the bus pulled into a Howard Johnson’s, and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life. When they went back to the bus, the girl sat beside him and introduced herself.
“Want some wine ” she said. He smiled and took the bottle. He thanked her and retreated again into silence. After a while, she went back to the others, as Vingo nodded into sleep.
In the morning they awoke outside another Howard Johnson’s, and this time Vingo went in. The girl insisted that he join them. When they went back on the bus, the girl sat with Vingo again, after a while, slowly and painfully and with great hesitation, he began to tell his story. He had been in jail in New York for the last four years, and now he was going home.
“When I was in jail I wrote to my wife,” he said. “I told her, I understand if you can’t stay married to me, get a new guy and forget about me. And she didn’t write to me. Not for three and a half years.”
“And you’re going home now, not knowing ”
“Yeah,” he said shyly. “Last week, I wrote her. I told her that if she had a new guy, I under-stood. But if she didn’t, if she would take me back she should let me know. We used to live in Brunswick, with a great big oak tree. I told her if she would take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree, and I would get off and come home. If she didn’t want me, forget it, no handkerchief, and I’d keep going on.”
“Wow,” the girl said. “Wow.”
She told the others, and soon all of them were in it, caught up in the approach of Brunswick, looking at the pictures Vingo showed them of his wife and three children.

It was a cold winter. My husband broke up with me. Our 35 years of marriage ended. Shocked, angry, sad and anxious, I packed up my few things, including flower seeds harvested from our flower bed — I loved flowers and was quite good at growing them. Carrying the personal belongings, I rented a small house and moved to a neighborhood where I didn’t know a single person.
The day after I moved in came proof that at least one of my new neighbors was friendly. I found a gift bag beside my back door. Inside were a square basket (designed for feeding wild birds) and three cakes. The note that accompanied it said, “I’m Julie. I live in the house right behind yours. I don’t know if you’re a birdwatcher, but we have lots of them in this neighborhood. Enjoy!”
I hung the basket on a tree branch outside my kitchen window, where some beautiful wild birds found it within minutes. Suddenly, I felt a little less lost and lonely. That was, until the very next day, when an unexpected winter storm came in. Ice and snow covered my driveway and the steep (陡峭的) road in front of my house. Tree branches bent under the weight of the snow, threatening power lines. Temperatures dropped sharply. Although I knew that pacing the floor and rubbing my hands wouldn’t change anything, I paced and rubbed anyway. Even if workers from the local traffic department cleared the roads, they wouldn’t clear my driveway. How would I get to the grocery store And if the electricity went out, how would I stay warm I had a fireplace but not a stick of firewood.
The snow finally stopped falling, but the temperature was still low. While shaking in my front yard one afternoon, I noticed my across-the-street neighbor clearing his driveway using his shovel (铲子). I introduced myself and learned that his name was Jerry. “I don’t have a snow shovel,” I said. “May I borrow yours when you’re finished ”
“Of course,” he told me. “I’ll leave it beside your front door when I’m done.”

On a cold morning, 79-year-old Donald planned a trip to a supermarket 30 miles away to get some groceries. It was far to go, but the store had bargain prices(特价), so it was worth the trip. He checked his pockets before he left. Wallet, house keys, bus token(专用辅币), he was all set.
When he arrived at the bus stop, he saw a young woman standing there. She was holding a baby and trying to get two kids to behave. “Stop it, Mike!” she cried, rocking the baby. “Stop it, Ricky!”
But the two kids, one looked about four and the other three, just wouldn’t listen. “Here now, boys,” Donald said. “Mind your momma!” Hearing a strange voice, the boys stopped and stared up at Donald with huge eyes. “Thank you,” the mother said. “My car broke down, and I have to take the baby to the doctor. But these two are a handful!’
“Are you new to the neighborhood ” asked Donald.
The woman smiled. “Yes! I’m Ellen, and Mark is my husband. We live in the pink house.” Donald smiled back. “That’s next door to mine! It’s good to have young people moving back into the neighborhood. Children bring things to life!”
Ellen sighed. “Right now, I’m just tired! My boys are just too lively! I had to rush out of the house this morning because of them.
Donald laughed. “I remember when my wife and I were young parents. We were tired all the time!”
Suddenly, Ellen started to look nervous. “I can’t find my wallet! Oh, no!”
“Look again,” Donald said kindly. “Sometimes when we are in a rush...”
“It’s not here!” Ellen cried. “What am I going to do I have to be at the doctor’s in half an hour Please, Donald, could you lend me the money for the ticket ”
Donald shook his head. “I’m sorry, Ellen, I don’t have any money. I shop with my food stamps at this time of the month…”
Seeing Ellen look so sad, Donald said, “Take my bus token! The kids don’t have to pay, so it will get you to town!”

It was my first time to ski and I had been persuaded to come along with a group of friends who had booked a hotel for us all. Everyone else there had at least some experience of skiing in the past and all throughout the flight to Geneva they were talking funny stories about past trips to towns and villages I hadn’t even heard of.
While I knew I was in for a really good time, a little part of me was wondering whether I had made a mistake by joining such experienced skiers for a week in the Alps(阿尔卑斯山), when I had never even had a single skiing lesson on proper snow, that is to say real snow.
We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and my training lessons didn’t start until the following morning. There was no way that I was going to stay behind and watch everyone else go out to enjoy the slopes(斜坡)without me, so I grabbed my stuff and headed out with the rest of them. Harriet, a member of our group, took pity on me and offered to pair up, giving me some tips on how to get started.
I had been planning hitting the ski track for months and now I arrived and I was about to feel the rush. The excitement started to spread. But on this occasion, it really was my first outing, and I was seriously nervous. I always loved snow, I loved throwing snowballs with my friends as a kid. but now I felt I was out of my comfort zone and, after I equipped myself, I was shaking all over nervously.
I tried to go forward. For all of about ten meters, I fell to the ground again and again. My instructor, Paul, was near and he was trying too hard not to laugh. I was feeling a little bit ashamed. Again to my feet, again to the ground.

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.
Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing Where’s your stuff ” Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willows. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.
To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.
“You’ve got to see this. ” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.
Frey frowned and shook his head, “Are you crazy That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in I go’s Sports Stores.” With this, Jack put the rest money back.

“Why do you want to be a teacher ” I never explain it without the usual obvious reasons, such as my love of children or wanting to make a difference. It was not until I met Kathy that I truly knew the reason I wanted to be a teacher.
I was running a summer program. A seventh grader, a young girl walked through the door and I thought to myself, “This is going to be a long summer.” She was a student at my school, and I was well aware of who she was even though I was an eighth teacher. Her reserved place in the principal office was well known by the eight teachers as we prepared our sales for those students who were going to need extra attention.
I racked my brain (绞尽脑汁) trying to figure out what I was going to do with her. I usually had my older students act as classroom helpers for the younger grades, so I decided that this would be a good spot for her. Little did I know how that one little decision would change my life.
Kathy transformed before my eyes. She showed love and patience with the children in that classroom. She was responsible and caring and she began referring to those students as “her kids”. I witnessed a natural teacher blooming. I had an unforgettable summer with Kathy.
Soon the school year began and Kathy and I were together again. This time I was her teacher. Kathy continued to volunteer with “her kids” at my after-school program. Her smile was infectious and her sense of humor amazing. Before graduation, Kathy thanked every person there for believing in her and giving her a chance. She was truly grateful. There was not a dry eye on the scene.
We continued to keep in touch when Kathy went to high school and then university. Once she sent a letter to me, thanking me again, for giving her a chance and believing in her. She also stated that she had made her final decision and she was going to be a teacher! I don’t know I could have felt more pride than I did at that moment.

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions ” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory.
As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too ” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.

2022-2023学年下学期·江苏泰州·高二期中试卷
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the first week of Mia's middle school. The bell's ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Mia followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Mia, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn't think others would like her.
Mia finally sat in Mr. Johnson's Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Mia forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We'll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Mia desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply(长粉刺)face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let's see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Mia originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's voice. “He's actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students' papers not read, including Mia's paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket(the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it!I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify(伪造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board(董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

2022-2023学年下学期·江苏连云港·东海县高二期中试题
阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was born in London, England, and lived there with my mother until I was about eight years old. To find a better life, she went to Chicago and left me with friends in London until she got settled enough to send for me.
Meanwhile, back in England, I was getting into trouble. I had always felt like an outsider, different from the other kids. They didn’t want to play with me. That made me mad, so I got into fights and ended up getting expelled(开除) for being a danger to the other kids at my school. The people I was staying with were upset with me and felt they couldn’t manage me. So, they sent me to a home for kids — kind of a boarding school. I felt alone and bored, the food was terrible, and I really missed my mother. Finally, she sent for me.
The weather was different, my school was different, the country was different, but some things were still the same—I was still getting into fights. Kids picked on me about my accent, the color of my skin, my grades or whatever. I was different, still left out. It didn’t matter; I hated getting picked on, and I let them know it — with my fists. All through grades seven and eight, I was sent to the principal’s office so often that he and I became friends. Instead of punishing me, he advised me that I should be better off using the energy I had in more positive ways and encouraged me to play football and basketball after school. He also suggested that I check out boxing — maybe I could learn to use my fists in a meaningful way instead of being on the destructive path I seemed to be headed for.

A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly drinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump(一团) in a puddle(水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.
The night before, a German dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, he was too weak to get up.
The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers. I didn’t want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter (流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I tossed (扔) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.
He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).
“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn’t swallow but poorly look at me. He was dying!

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The incident took place at Cheektowaga, a town in Erie County, New York, in the middle of a historic and dangerous snowstorm. I had gone out to visit my friend living in another county, but unfortunately I got stuck and was unable to drive further.
I fully realized how dangerous this would be as there was not enough gas left in the truck for me to get through the deadly snowstorm. The situation got even worse in such a place without any houses in sight.
I stayed in my truck, calling for help anxiously but the weak signal didn’t help me get connected. There was nothing I could do but wait. At midnight, there came a knock outside the truck. I opened the door and surprisingly found an old lady standing in the storm with just a thin coat, clearly not enough to survive the snowstorm. I invited her to get inside my truck at once. She told me in a weak voice that her name was Mary and her car broke down. She had walked a long way before finding my truck.
Misfortune never came alone. Soon, we realized the air conditioner burned all the fuel in my truck and it was getting colder and colder inside the truck. Mary closed her eyes without saying a word, shaking in the corner. Considering Mary’s condition, I decided to take action right now. Luckily, the GPS of my truck still worked. And with the help of GPS, I noticed that a school was nearby. I decided to take shelter in the school. Since Mary was too weak to move, I carried her on my back, heading to the school. After ten minutes’ struggle in the snow, we finally arrived, but found the school gate locked.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day.
I was a guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses’ station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came in and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, “Five How did I get five I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.”
“Well, there are five signed in. ”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
“Are you all sick ” I asked. “Yes, " she said weakly and lowered her head.
“Okay,” I replied. “Who’s first ” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the description of their symptoms, things got a little vague(含糊的). Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Suddenly I knew something. So I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients, she responded, “Take your time. It’s warm here and there is a Christmas tree.”

“Nine-eighty-four for a urgency call please. You are heading to Maroubra for a child of unknown age, address to follow, over.” Must be a big job, I thought as I moved quickly to the radio. I sat in the front seat of the ambulance and took the microphone. My heart jumped. The possibilities of a young child surviving falling from a height were low at best. Then I gestured to the driver that we would have to head off.
“Take a left here,” my partner Amanda said. “The second street on your left is a lane way.” The driver threw the ambulance around the corner and saw a man waving his hands. He indicated that we should head down the lane way. Then I saw a woman with her arms in the air. There were people along three blocks leading to the address, signaling us in. It had now been nine minutes since we received the call and we travelled about 15 kilometers. It was a miracle(奇迹) that we got here so quickly.
The driver came to a sudden stop beside the crowd. Amanda and I got off the ambulance immediately. I saw a boy lying on the grass beside the footpath. The boy’s face was white and looked dead. A woman standing behind the boy was his mother. I could see the wide-eyed scare on her face. There must be 15 people standing silently around. All eyes were glued to us as we approached.
I saw a young man going down on his knees and performing external cardiac massage(体外心脏按摩) on the boy. Later I learned that the young man was a medical student. “Two, three, four, five,” he counted as he pressed the small chest—but a failed attempt. There was no sign of life. “Let me try,” Amanda said, giving the boy mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(复苏) and heart massage. About two minutes later, there were signs of life and the cardiac monitor showed the heart had electrical activity. I took a big breath in and out.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One early summer afternoon, my little brother and I were about a quarter-mile from our home, deep in the woods by a river we liked to play near. We’d stay out so long that my brother usually kept snacks in his pockets so we wouldn’t need to go home until suppertime.
My brother spotted Pierre drinking from the river. He wanted to go pet him, but I wasn’t so sure it was a good idea. Pierre was an extra-large German Shepherd(牧羊犬) .That didn’t scare me. I loved big dogs. But on the day we found Pierre, his appearance was frightening. With many bloody wounds and completely thin and dull fur, he was so skinny that we could see his individual ribs(肋骨). As we got closer, I could tell he was shaking in fear. My heart went out to this poor dog, but I wasn’t sure how to help him.
Even only five years older, my brother was more adventurous and brave than I was. While I was hesitating how best to help Pierre, he approached the scared dog and offered him some of our snacks. Pierre stopped shaking, and his eyes lit up with hope. When Pierre carefully ate and then gently pushed his bighead into my brother’s little hand for petting,my fears melted away. He was clearly a good dog who had been in a bad situation. My desire to help him overrode my fear of his appearance.
“Maybe we can keep him at home”, I timidly(胆怯地) suggested. “Good idea” my brother almost jumped to his feet and agreed readily. However, what concerned us was how we could persuade others, especially Mom, to accept Pierre. We knew Mom loved animals, but meanwhile was afraid of big dogs. “Mom always reminds us to treat animals with love and care. I am sure she will love the pitiful creature.” My brother’s comforting words finally set my heart at rest. Pierre seemed to know we were trying to offer some help and he crouched on the ground obediently(顺从地) .

Finders Keepers
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. It was a short distance, so I knew they were safe and no trouble would befall (降临) them.
One warm spring day, a cute puppy (小狗) followed them home after school. When my husband got home that evening, she climbed into his lap to watch TV. The girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar (项圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time the girls took responsibility for another life.
The following week something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was pleading (恳求) for the return of a lost puppy in the vicinity (附近) of our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.

Paragraph 2:
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever.

【答案】
Version 1
The elevator came to a stop between floors. My nervousness turned into fear at once. But I immediately realized that it was better to act than to just stand. First, I pressed the emergency button. Then I asked people to lean their backs against the wall of the elevator and adjust their breathing. But suddenly, a man jumped up and down irritably. “What a terrible elevator!” he said angrily. I rushed to stop him. “Please stop! It could be very dangerous. We should calm down and wait for help!” Fortunately, everyone calmed down then. We just waited and waited. I felt anxious and checked my watch.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. Obviously, I would be late, and I thought that the interviewers couldn’t be in a good mood. Finally, the rescuers arrived, and as soon as the door opened, I prepared to run to the office. But all of a sudden, a hand rested on my shoulder. I turned around and saw the man smiling at me. “Don’t worry, young man. You’ve done a good job. Congratulations on passing the interview.” I chuckled in surprise.
Version 2
The elevator came to a stop between floors. Not knowing what was wrong, everyone in it got nervous quickly. Someone pressed the emergency button, and we were told that it would take the rescue team at least an hour to complete the repair work, which meant we had to be trapped in this narrow and hot space, waiting. Hearing this, people were anxious, and I couldn’t help worrying about the interview. With the clock ticking, I fell into desperation.
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever. I was so frustrated that my well-prepared resume wouldn’t work. Just when I gave up hope, the beautiful “ding” sound set me free from those messy thoughts. A receptionist in a suit stopped me after I had stepped out of the elevator and informed me of another interview opportunity because of the incident. At that moment, I could hardly describe my excitement. Life is just like a box of chocolates, and we never know what we will get. So don’t quit hoping even in the face of difficulty.

“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “This time I’ll hold your finger and show you how much pressure to use. Guess what, it took me a while to get the hang of swiping.” added I. I held her finger gently and her face lit up when the menu appeared. “I want a selfie with you. Show me how to use the camera!” My heart sank a bit, but she didn’t need a lot of help and we sent her friend Emily a photo of us both laughing. “I can’t wait to show everyone my new phone,” she said happily. “Thank you for your patience, Tom.”
I was not feeling so hopeless any more now. Great-grandma’s spirit inspired me greatly. It occurred to me that if a 92-year-old lady could learn new skills, then so could I. I had no doubt that I would find something I liked even more. There must be a job out there for me somewhere and I was sure to find it. I headed for home with a smile on my face and a whole lot of love for my amazing great-grandmother. My great-grandmother would always be a role model for me to learn from.

Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with ’s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’. ”Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s testpaper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.

【答案】
It was right beside the soccer field, playing its music loudly to attract customers and players as well. The players on both teams turned to look at it. A few girls pointed to it and cheered. Some called out excitedly to their parents to buy them one. The soccer game had practically stopped. Cali looked around and saw the soccer ball close by, ignored by the nearest yellow player. Cali smiled happily. She looked at her aunt, who nodded at her. “Now!” her aunt yelled. Cali didn’t hesitate.
She ran fast to the ball. By the time the other girls had noticed, Cali was positioned right in front of the net. The goalkeeper was standing to one side, also looking at the ice cream truck. She turned back quickly to guard the net as Cali kicked the ball hard. The goalkeeper reached out her gloved hand. The ball touched the tips of her fingers as it swooshed past, right into the top corner of the net. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!” Cali jumped with joy, at the same time all his teammates surrounding her, jumping and shouting.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My mind cleared and I concentrated. Now did the word start with P-I or P-E I knew this. We’d learned that there is a “pie” in“piece”. “I-E-C-E,” I said. “Piece.”
Paragraph 2:
“Very good,” Mrs Casazza said with a cheerful smile on her face. I did it once, so I knew I could do it again. Throughout the year, I even won a few spelling bees. It worked so well that I had so much fun from the spelling bee and looked forward to it every Thursday. Thanks to my mother, I wasn’t afraid of standing in the front of the class. Now, I have more confidence in myself at school, jumping at the chance to give speeches and book reports.

Paragraph 1
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves.

Paragraph 2
During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves. Abrupt as it might seem, George came up without hesitation and asked if they were his, but there came a disappointing answer. On second thought, he realized nobody would be so foolish as to wear them right inside the store. He had no other alternative but to ask the cashier to keep them in case the lost gloves were found. Then he dragged his legs towards the exit.
During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. After all, in deep winter, he could not do without gloves. Finally poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. With the last ray of hope, he stepped into the store again. No sooner had he opened the door than the cashier told him there was indeed one such pair as he lost. After examining them carefully, he was wild with joy, expressing sincere gratitude and saying to himself that a good action was never lost.

【答案】
Now they were twenty miles from Brunswick. And the young people took over window seats on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face into the ex-con’s mask, as if fortifying himself against still another disappointment. Then it was ten miles, and then five. The bus acquired a dark hushed mood, full of silence, of absence, of lost years, of the woman’s plain face, of the sudden letter on the breakfast table, of the wonder of children, of the iron bars of solitude.
Then suddenly all of the young people were up out of their seats. They were screaming and shouting and crying, doing small dances, shaking clenched fists in triumph and exaltation. All except Vingo. Vingo sat there stunned, looking at the oak tree. It was covered with yellow handkerchiefs twenty of them, thirty of them, maybe hundreds, a tree that stood like a banner of welcome blowing and billowing in the wind, turned into a gorgeous yellow blur by the passing bus. As the young people shouted, the old con slowly rose from his seat, holding himself tightly, and made his way to the front of the bus to go home.

Passage 2
2022-2023学年下学期·江苏扬州·宝应县高二期中试卷
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Several hours later, I went outside again. I found a snow shovel leaning next to my door, but someone had already cleared my driveway. And what moved me was that a lot of dry firewood was left in front of my door. Moreover, just at dusk, my doorbell rang. There stood a neighbor holding a grocery bag. “It’s hard for you to get your car out in such weather, so I brought you these,” he smiled. Before I could thank him and offer to pay, he turned and walked away.
Spring arrived, and I decided to grow flowers to repay my neighbors’ kindnesses. Using seeds I had brought, I planted flowers in my new garden. Before long, many were in full bloom. I gave them to not only neighbors who had helped me but those who loved them. Moreover, I patiently taught flower-loving neighbors how to grow various flowers in their gardens. In the end, the whole neighborhood was filled with colorful flowers.

“But what about you ” asked Ellen anxiously.
“Don’t worry,” Donald told her. “I’ll go shopping next week!” Ellen accepted the token and got on the bus, managing to keep Mike and Ricky under control.

【答案】
Donald watched them go, and then he walked back to his house. He went into the kitchen and looked at his empty cupboard. He’d have to do with the little he had, but it was worth it to help the tired young mom. He opened his last can of soup and sat down to have his lunch while watching his favorite show. Afterward, he nodded off in front of the TV. He woke up suddenly when someone rang his doorbell.
Donald opened the door and saw several boxes neatly lined up on his doorstep. Donald opened the first box. It was full of fruit and vegetables! The second box held bread, milk, and eggs. The third box had beef and ham. Then Donald noticed a note reading “Dear Donald, thank you for your kindness. Please accept this as a token of my gratitude. Please come to lunch on Saturday!” Donald smiled as he read Ellen’s note. He had the feeling this was the beginning of a wonderful friendship!

【答案】One possible version:
And the pattern continued until finally I caught my balance. How excited I was! However, I didn’t dare to move in the slightest for fear that my run would come to a sudden end. From a few feet behind, Harriet and Paul were shouting something cheering, trying to encourage me. Then I moved a little, I probably only covered a small distance of several meters but how amazing it was. Whenever I was at a loss what to do in practice, my only resort would be recreating that feeling—my love for snow. “Whatever happens in my training over the coming week,” I said to myself, “I will try my best!”
With proper lessons the following days, I improved quickly. I had a really good progressing time with the other beginners with the help of Paul, a really patient teacher. But, of course, I was impatient to join my friends on the more daring runs they were telling me about over dinner in the hotel each evening. They just listened to me with smiles, wishing me to join them as soon as possible. On my last lesson, I was told by Paul that I could join them that day. Wow! It was my time to show!

Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Several years later, I came across Kathy while shopping one afternoon. You can imagine her excitement about our encounter. On seeing me, she cried with delight as she always did and gave me a huge smile and bear hug. And my happiness was no less than hers. Later, we shared a dinner. Over the dinner, she caught me up on everything that happened to her. She was a school teacher like me in a local school, getting along well with her kids. We chatted on and on, enjoying a wonderful evening.
Now when I think about why I became a teacher I think of Kathy. She truly loved life and I felt so special to be once a part of her life. I have a picture we took together hanging in my classroom as a daily reminder of why I am there. Whenever there are students testing my patience, I think of Kathy and remember what a difference she made in my life. I wish every teacher a Kathy; I am truly honored and blessed to have her in my life.(158 words)
