The school that I went to had a tradition during the eighth-grade graduation: a scholarship(奖学金) jacket was awarded to the student who had kept the highest grades for eight years, with his/her name written in gold letters on the pocket. I had been a straight A student since the first grade and this last year had looked forward very much to owning that jacket.
One day, close to graduation, I happened to overhear a conversation between my teachers, knowing that this year the scholarship jacket might go to Joann, whose father was on the Board(董事会). I went home very sad and cried into my pillow that night.
The next day when the headmaster called me into his office, I knew what it would be about. He looked uncomfortable and unhappy. I decided I wasn’t going to make it any easier for him, so I looked him straight in the eyes. He looked away and kept toying nervously with the pen on his desk.
“Martha,” he said, “there’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. As you know, it has always been free.” He cleared his throat and continued, “This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars for the jacket.”
Fifteen dollars! I knew it was just an excuse. And I also knew what it meant to my poor family. My father was a farmer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed eight children, so when I was six, I was given to my grandparents to raise.
I stared at him in shock. He still avoided looking in my eyes. “So if you are unable to pay the fifteen dollars, it will be given to the next one in line.” I didn’t need to ask who that was.
Standing with all my dignity(尊严), I said, “I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” I cried all the way back home, so by the time I got home my eyes were red and puffy.
I approached Grandpa, who was working in the bean field. ......
I dragged into the headmaster's office the next day. ......
P1:Upon arriving home, I told my grandpa what had happened.
The entire story, including the principal's words and the sudden policy change, spilled out between sobs and sighs.
As Grandpa listened silently, his brow furrowed in thought, the lines on his face deepening with concern.
Grandpa listened silently, his expression unreadable.
Shortly after I finished,
he stood up, walked over to me, and placed his weathered hands on my shoulder.
“Martha. The jacket is not just a piece of clothing; it's a symbol of your dedication and perseverance”. he said with a resolve. “It is yours by right, not by wealth”.
His words filled me with a mix of fear and courage. I knew challenging the school's decision wouldn't be easy, but with Grandpa's unwavering support, I felt a spark of hope.(回应阅读原文的尾句“ I’ll speak to my grandfather and let you know tomorrow,” 跟爷爷谈了,决定也做出来了)
P2: The next day, the principal called me to his office.
As I walked down the corridor, my heart raced with a sliver of hope.
As I walked in, I was prepared to explain my decision, but the principal’s first words took me by surprise.
"Martha,” he cleared his throat and said, “Your history teacher, Mr. Frank, and I had a long discussion after you left yesterday, and we've realized charging fifteen dollars for the scholarship jacket goes against the very spirit of this award. Therefore, we will present it to you at the graduation ceremony for your highest grades during the last eight years."
Relief washed over me, and a smile tugged at the corners of my lips, growing wider until it stretched across my face.
The real victory was not the jacket itself, but the lesson learned about standing up for what is right, a lesson taught by my grandpa and Mr. Frank.
