阅读理解
Busy traffic doesn't stop creatures like deer and bears from crossing highways. And, sadly, they may lose their lives. In just two years along a part of a highway in Utah, USA, 98 deer, three moose, two elk, two raccoons, and a cougar were killed in car collisions (碰撞) — a total of 106 animals. People are also hurt. About 200 die every year in the more than one million wildlife vehicle collisions in the country. “Over the last 15 years, such collisions have increased by 50 percent,” says Rob Ament at the Western Transportation Institute (WTI).
There's one effective solution, however: wildlife underpasses and overpasses. “You can get reductions of 85 to 95 percent with crossings under or over highways,” Ament says. These bridges and tunnels are showing up worldwide. In Washington State, along a 15-mile stretch of highway on I-90, there are 20 wildlife bridges and six underpasses. They allow many creatures to cross the road.
These wildlife crossings aren't just about saving animals from accidents. I-90 is an important east-west lifeline in the state. But it prevents many animals from moving between north and south. They have to produce their young among closely related members. This is really a big problem. “Dying out happens when populations can't find each other. This is especially true for species in old-growth forests,” says wildlife biologist Patty Garvey-Darda.
One of the most successful examples of wildlife overpasses is in Banff, Canada. Tony Clevenger is a wildlife biologist at WTI. He has been monitoring wildlife at Banff 's six overpasses (and 38 underpasses) for years. “Grizzly bears, elk, deer, and moose favor big, open structures,” he says. “Cougars and black bears use smaller crossings, with less light and more cover.” Black bears' natural home is in the forest, so they won't feel comfortable on a large, open crossing structure, for example.
“So on one side we should plant trees, and on the other side have areas that are open, planted with grass,” Clevenger says.

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Mad.

B. They can connect different species.
C. They allow species to find enough food.
D. They help control the number of species.
4. What has Tony Clevenger found
A. Banff 's overpasses and underpasses are successful.
B. More wildlife crossings are needed in Banff.
C. Different animals prefer different crossings.
D. Many animals feel unsafe on the crossings.
