五、阅读理解
In ancient China, willow branches (杨柳枝) were often used as a parting gift between friends and family members. Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of farewell
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can grow anywhere, wet or dry, north or south. So giving a willow branch to say goodbye is a way to tell them you hope they will easily adapt to their new living environment.
At the same time, in Chinese, the pronunciation for the willow “柳” is similar to the character “留”, which means asking someone to stay—only the tones (声调) are different. So offering a willow branch is like asking the other to stay.
It's said that this custom started to become popular during the Han Dynasty. At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang'an, today's Xi'an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to people who would leave.
Willow branches, as a symbol of farewell, are often mentioned in poems. In The Book of Songs, there is the line “When I left there, willows shed tear.” At the time of the Tang and Song dynasties, such poems were common as travelling was easy and poets felt sad about leaving. For example, Wang Wei wrote “The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.” in his famous poem A Fond Farewell to a Friend.

Two years ago, I got a job in a Chinese-Canadian company in Vancouver. One day my new boss said he would invite me to lunch to celebrate my new job in a Chinese restaurant. “A Chinese restaurant Chopsticks Oh no! Will I make a complete fool of myself ” I thought.
That evening, I cooked noodles and spent two hours trying to learn how to use chopsticks. Try as I might, I didn't succeed. I called my penfriend and asked her to explain exactly how to use chopsticks. She patiently explained the proper way of holding them. “Louise, it's not that hard,” she said. “That's easy for you to say,” I replied. “You've been eating with chopsticks all your life. It's natural for you!”
I didn't sleep well that night. The next day, when my boss took two co-workers and me to the restaurant, he talked to the waiter in Chinese.
