How to Overcome Depression
Depression is a weakening condition that can make it impossible for you to enjoy your daily life.To overcome your depression, you have to first determine if what you’re feeling are the symptoms of depression. 1 While medications can help relieve these symptoms,it is still important for depressed people to understand the disorder and develop healthier strategies for coping with it.
Keep yourself busy.Fill your schedule with events and activities you love.Keeping a busy schedule will force you to stay active, focused, and thinking about the next thing on your list. You can draw up a schedule for each day at the start of the week,or simply plan out each day the night before. 2
Improve your diet. 3 Even if you’re losing your appetite, you need to be determined to eat three meals a day.You don’t need to try to lose weight or be incredibly health conscious when you’re dealing with your depression, but eating healthier food regularly will improve your mental and physical state.
Think positively.Being a more positive thinker will help you look at your life and world in a way that fills you with hope instead of despair. To think more positively, you should learn how to recognize your negative thoughts and to fight them with stronger positive thoughts whenever you can.For a jump start, find at least five things to be grateful for. 4

I was waiting for my train and on the subway station’s floor was a man just sitting there. I looked around and nobody stopped so I just went my way. After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help. He told me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to help him stand up.
He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I asked him to take the elevator. Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.
We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man’s knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him. No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved himself as he walked on his own feet.
At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train. There was no way to give him back his money. I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.
My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought he just wanted to thank me, the best way he knew how. Now, my question is—what act of kindness shall I do with these 100 dollars

It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Head Start” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into preschool institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Head Start” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.
To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socioeconomic statuses, ages and family structures. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development.
At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socioeconomic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds or family structures. The one factor that was found to affect the child’s development was the poor quality of parent child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.
The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Head Start” program. Without a similar focus on parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome educational unfairness.
4.What caused the failure of the “Head Start” program
A.The large number of poor families.
B.The disapproval from children.
C.The late start of the program.
D.The long period of time.
5.What do we know about the “Missouri” program
A.It focused on the children’s first school teachers.
B.It helped the children return to the same home.
C.It made the children improved in many aspects.
D.It gave the parents advice on their development.
6.According to the passage, what is likely to influence children’s performance
A.The number of family members. B.The parent child communication.
C.The intelligence of their parents. D.The teacher student relationship.
7.How does the author develop the passage
A.By listing figures. B.By making comparisons.
C.By presenting ideas. D.By drawing conclusions.
