Advice 1: You don't have to be in the spotlight to make an impact. As a first-generation resident of the US, my mother played a crucial role in shaping my character, reminding me of the importance of hard work and being humble. A valuable lesson she taught me is that making a difference doesn't always require being in the center of the stage. She emphasized that effective contributions can be made without seeking public attention. —Dr. Michelle Feng, chief clinical officer
Advice 2: Focus on motivating others. I received the best career advice when turning 15. Mom told me that life is centered around the connections we have with others, and by motivating others, we will find our own path to success. In my professional life, I manage to cooperate with individuals to form meaningful relationships. Through my experiences, I realized that remarkable outcomes often arise from interactions with others. —Lidia Vijga, co-founder of Briefbid
Advice 3: Just do it, even if you're scared. Known for her bravery and courage, my mother was a remarkable woman, who always encouraged me by saying, "Even if you are filled with fear, just go ahead and do it. Despite feeling scared, take action because you are capable of achieving more than you believe." Her words have been a guiding force in my career journey and continue to stick with me to this day. —Lori Paulin, global head of Customer Empowerment
Advice 4: Do the right thing. One of the most valuable career lessons I learned is to always place doing what is right as a top priority, regardless of the circumstances. From a young age, I understood that even if staying true to my principles and values meant missing out on certain opportunities, it would be OK. My mother gave me this belief that standing by my core values is far more rewarding in the long run than compromising them for short-term gains. —Joanna C., founder of The Millennial

Joshua Haveman, a flight instructor, demonstrated exceptional courage and resourcefulness during an off-duty rescue in Yosemite National Park.
The dramatic rescue unfolded on September 2nd, 2023, during Haveman's final stop of Half Dome, a peak towering at 8,842 feet. The incident began when a fellow climber fell approximately 60 to 80 feet, coming to rest unsafely on a narrow ledge(岩架) hanging over an abyss(深渊) of about 8,000 feet.
"I knew people were in trouble as soon as I reached the top," Haveman said. "It was cold and windy, and climbers were struggling to drop along a smooth metal cable on even smoother rock. I dropped my backpack, grabbed my medical kit, and headed towards that place. Just then, I heard a scream and saw a climber sliding down about 80 feet, landing on the only spot that could have saved him, preventing a fall of 500 to 1,000 feet."
Without hesitation, Haveman took action. Despite the tough winds and hail, he risked outside the permanent cable barriers to reach the injured climber. His climbing expertise and extensive medical training were indispensable in this life-threatening situation.
Haveman recalled the scene, stating, "The climber's legs were badly injured, so I collected sticks and began climbing onto the ledge. Other climbers were concerned for my safety, but the injured climber was in extreme pain, so I left the cable area and joined him on the ledge." Using the simple splint crafted from sticks, Haveman provided essential first aid. To protect the climber from the elements and apparent shock, Haveman selflessly covered him with his jacket.
Moments later, a Search and Rescue Park Ranger arrived. Together, they helped the patient's drop using a cable ladder, administered further critical medical treatment, and provided care for shock. Ultimately, the climber was airlifted to safety via helicopter, receiving the urgent medical attention required.

The 2023 Nobel Prize in economics has been awarded to economic historian Claudia Goldin at Harvard University, "for having advanced our understanding of women's labor market outcomes". Goldin's work has helped to explain why women have been under-represented in the labor market for at least the past two centuries, and why even today they continue to earn less than men on average by around 13%.
Goldin mined 200 years of data to analyze how changes in women's participation in the labor force have been influenced by social, political and technological change over the past two centuries. Before Goldin's studies, it was widely thought that the increase in the percentage of women in work over the course of the 20th century was a reflection of economic growth—higher growth meant more females could be employed. But by looking back carefully at historical records, Goldin showed that the percentage of married women involved in paid work was at least as high in the late 18th century as it is today. She also demonstrated that although work opportunities for women expanded in the 20th century, they were not made use of as much as they could have been.
Goldin has also shown that inequalities in pay have not followed a simple relationship with economic growth. The earning divide between different genders was smaller during the industrial revolution during 1820-1850; the divide changed little between 1930 and 1980.Goldin showed in 2010 that being a mother has a key role in keeping pay inequality, largely through loss of earnings when women quit work in favor of raising children.
"The strength of her work comes from combining reliable historical data with insights from economic theories of wage determination, employment, discrimination and political economy, "says economist Claudia Olivetti at Dartmouth College. "I am delighted to see Goldin's work recognized. She has been such an inspiration to many women and young researchers. Leading with passion, curiosity and integrity, she taught us to be brave and go for the big questions. Thanks to Goldin's research, some companies are now starting to change their practices with the introduction of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements."
28. Which aspect of the economy does Claudia Goldin focus on in her work
A. The labor market. B. The political economy.
C. The employment inequality. D. The gender pay gap.
29. What did Goldin's analysis of the 200-year data say
A. More working women reflect economic growth.
B. Jobs have been the same in the past 2 centuries.
C. Economic growth doesn't bring more women into employment.
D. Female labor forces have changed greatly since the 18th century.
30. What is the major factor in the earning divide according to Goldin
A. Marriage. B. Parenthood.
C. Economic growth. D. Industrial revolution.
31. Why is Claudia Olivetti's comment referred to in the last paragraph
A. To show Goldin's influence.
B. To praise Goldin for her bravery.
C. To explain reasons for Goldin's success.
D. To prove Goldin's insights into economy.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge developed a solar-powered reactor that changes CO2 and plastic waste into sustainable fuels and other valuable chemical products.
The researchers took their inspiration from carbon capture and storage (CCS), where CO2 is collected and then pumped and stored underground. "CCS is a technology that's popular with the fossil (化石) fuel industry as a way to make less harm to the environment while continuing oil and gas exploration, "said professor Erwin Reisner. "But instead of storing CO2, we can make something useful from it."
To date, their solar-driven experiments have used pure, concentrated CO2 from a container, but for the technology to be of practical use, it needs to be able to actively catch CO2 from industrial processes, or directly from the air. However, since CO2 is just one of many types of molecules (分子) in the air we breathe, making this technology selective enough to transform highly diluted (稀释的) CO2 is a huge trial.
The researchers adapted their solar-driven technology so that it works with flue gas or directly from the air, transforming CO2 and plastics into fuel and chemicals using only the power of the sun. By making air flow through the system containing a special solution, the CO2 selectively gets trapped, and the other gases go out of it. This process allows the researchers to concentrate the CO2 from the air in solution, making it easier to work with.
The system has two parts: on one side is the CO2 solution that gets changed into syngas, a simple and green fuel. On the other plastics are changed into useful chemicals using only sunlight. "The plastic component is an important trick to this system," said Dr. Motiar Rahaman."Collecting and using CO2 from the air makes the chemistry more difficult. But, if we add plastic waste to the system, the plastic donates electrons to the CO2.The plastic is broken down to useful chemicals and the CO2 is transformed into syngas. "
32. What is the advantage of the new system compared with CCS
A. It can turn waste into treasure. B. It collects CO2 in various situations.
C. It does no harm to the environment. D. It gains popularity among companies.
33. What does the underlined word "trial" probably mean in paragraph 3
A. Advancement. B. Difficulty. C. Switch. D. Test.
34. Why is the special solution used
A. To collect CO2 from the air. B. To let air pass the system.
C. To help plastics break down. D. To react with and repurpose CO2.
35. Which can be the best title for the text
A. The First Solar-powered Reactor B. New Technology of Reducing CO2
C. Game-changing Concept of Recycling D. Clean Fuels Made from Air and Plastic

As a joke writer for 20 years, Gene Perret had taken hundreds of flights. 36 Suddenly Perret's ears pricked up(竖起). "There may be 50 ways to leave your family," the air hostess said, "but there are only five ways to leave this aeroplane." And then: "Please return your seat to its upright and most uncomfortable position."
Perret uses this story to make a serious point: 37 Some people can't tell a joke, but everyone can learn to use humour effectively. The first step Perret recommends is building a comedy collection". Put down 25 jokes or stories that you find funny. Then work out whether you are better with stories or one-liners. 38 Otherwise, it not only wastes your time, but discourages you.
39 It might not meet your needs if you start collecting material before you intend to use it. Joke books are OK, but Perret suggests seeking material from your own experience whenever there is something appropriate. He tells a story about helping his daughter recite a poem at kindergarten. When he offered to write one, she said, "No, Dad, this is in front of the whole school. I'd rather it was good." Nothing puts people more at ease than self-deprecating(自嘲的) humour.
A few more tips: keep your material short, tell it slowly and, no matter how funny they are, don't laugh at your own jokes while you're telling them. And the most important one—practice makes perfect. 40 The next time someone asks how to get to the Royal Albert Hall, remember to reply, "Practice, practice, practice."
A. Look for humour at any time.
B. Don't try to be what you're not.
C. Material should also be adapted for the audience.
D. So he was only half listening to safety instructions.
E. Perret tends to combine humour with his experience.
F. Humour can grab someone's attention and get a message across.
G. Like any material objects, successful humour comes with the doing.

I started working out with my personal trainer, Teresa. Months later, my weight didn't reduce. I wasn't feeling very motivated.
"Let's start with something different today," Teresa said. I thought she was going to show me a new exercise. Instead, she took something small and green out of her pocket. A rubber band(橡皮筋). Teresa took my right arm and pulled the band onto my wrist, a determined look on her face. "This will solve your problem," she assured me. "Your weight is not your biggest problem," Teresa said. "What's really holding you back is you're always putting yourself down."
I had grown up constantly comparing myself to others, and I fell short every time. The other kids at my high school were brighter, more interesting and definitely better looking. I explained all that to Teresa while I warmed up on the treadmill. "I know I don't have a lot of confidence," I admitted. "But put myself down No! I'm just being honest with myself."
Teresa didn't see it that way. "Your negative thinking is a bad habit, and it's time to break it," she declared.
The plan was simple. Every time I thought or said something that put me down, I was supposed to pull the rubber band hard and let myself out of that mindset. "Pay attention to how many times you have a negative thought about yourself," Teresa said as we moved on to the leg press machine. "I think you'll be surprised at how often you do it."
Could she be right I knew Teresa really wanted to help me, so even though I thought her plan was kind of silly, I agreed to try Operation Rubber Band. I left the gym and drove home with the green band around my wrist.
A pile of mail was waiting. There was an official-looking letter from my bank. This can't be good, I thought. I tore open the envelope. One of my checks had been returned because I'd been late transferring money to the account. My cheeks burned when I saw it was the birthday check I had sent to my niece. You really messed up now! How could you be so stupid

The climber's legs were badly injured, so I collected sticks and began climbing onto the ledge."
Joshua Haveman, a flight instructor, demonstrated exceptional courage and resourcefulness..." Other climbers were concerned for my safety, but the injured climber was in extreme pain, so I left the cable area and joined him on the ledge."和"To protect the climber from the elements and apparent shock, Haveman selflessly covered him with his jacket."
C
28.答案:D
解析:从第一段中的"having advanced our understanding of women's labor market outcomes" "Goldin's work has helped to explain... why even today they continue to earn less than men on average by around 13%"和下文内容可知, Claudia Goldin利用大量可靠的历史数据,结合现代的经济学分析方法研究性别引起的收入差异、影响女性就业的因素等。故选D项。
Before Goldin's studies, it was widely thought that the increase in the percentage of women in work... could be employed" "Goldin showed that the percentage of married women involved in paid work... they were not made use of as much as they could have been"可知,在Goldin 的研究之前,人们普遍认为20世纪女性劳动力参与率的提高是经济增长的反映—经济增长意味着更多女性会被雇用。
Goldin showed in 2010 that being a mother has a key role in keeping pay inequality, largely through loss of earnings when women quit work in favor of raising children"可知,Goldin在2010年表示成为母亲在维持收入不平等中起着关键作用,主要是因为女性放弃工作来抚养孩子带来了收入 损失。
31.答案:A
She has been such an inspiration to many women and young researchers... she taught us to be brave and go for the big questions. Thanks to Goldin's research... the introduction of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements",由此可知,她赞扬Goldin的工作, 并表示Goldin鼓舞了许多女性和年轻研究者,这些都揭示了Goldin的影响力。
D
32.答案:A
The researchers took their inspiration... collected and then pumped and stored underground"和"But instead of storing CO2, we can make something useful from it"可知,与碳捕存相比,新的系统可以将二氧化碳变为有用的东西。
34.答案:A
By making air flow through the system containing a special solution, the CO2 selectively gets trapped, and the other gases go out of it"可知,通过 使空气流过含有特殊溶液的系统,二氧化碳被选择性地捕获,而其他气体则被排出。

Paragraph 1:
I couldn't stop feeling bad about myself when I saw the returned check. Teresa's words stayed in my head, and I felt a little pain on my wrist from the green rubber band. It was like a real reminder. Even though I wasn't sure, I pulled the band, wanting to stop thinking badly about myself. I decided it was time to deal with the bigger problems that were holding me back. It wasn't just about fixing a money mistake; it was about changing how I saw and talked about myself. Every time I had a negative thought, I pulled that band—kind of hurt, but I was determined to give it a try. As time passed, I noticed something changing.
Paragraph 2:
Seven days later, I went to the gym for my appointment with my trainer. As I stepped onto the treadmill, I realized something was different. Teresa spotted the band and smiled, asking how it'd been going. I shared my experiences, surprised to admit that pulling the band actually helped. During our workout, Teresa introduced a new routine, pushing me to try exercises I never thought I could do. As the session progressed, I found myself acknowledging accomplishments rather than dwelling on shortcomings. The green band, once a mere accessory, now symbolized a journey toward self-acceptance.
