Passage 1
(2023上·福建宁德·高三福建省福安市第一中学校考阶段练习)Transportation shapes the world: along with communications, it forms a global net that connects person to person, city to city, and country to country. Transportation routes as well as vehicles are vital to the functioning and spread of every civilization.
A country’s economy depends on reliable transportation. Cities spread out along roads, rivers, and rails, so does information. Until the 20th century, these routes were confined to land or water. With the invention of powered flight, the air became an open road as well. The earliest way of traveling was undoubtedly by foot, and humans’ earliest means of transporting goods was carrying loads on their back or head. By 4000 B.C., people were using domesticated animals for transport, a method greatly improved in some parts of the world by the invention of the wheel, probably first developed around 3500 B.C..
Until the 19th century, animals were the engines of land transportation. But with the invention of the steam engine and the internal combustion engine, railroads and automobiles revolutionized travel and trade. More than 600 million cars and trucks travel the world today.
Water has always been a fast and efficient mode of travel, and even today it remains a primary mover of heavy goods. The importance of waterways to human civilization can be seen on any map: almost all of the world’s major cities are located on coastlines or rivers. As early as 7000 B.C., people were building canoes; long-distance ships were common by 3000 B.C. Until the 1950s, ships were the chief means of overseas passenger travel.
Although the Montgolfier brothers took flight in balloons in the 18th century, air travel was not practical until the invention of powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. Within ten years, the commercial air transportation business had begun.
Since the 20th century, high-speed rail has become another convenient way of travel. Today, two-thirds of the world’s high-speed rail track is in China, which measures nearly 30,000 kms, and this is expected to reach 38,000 kms by 2025.
24.What is the passage mainly about
A.Technological advancements in transport over time.
B.The influence of economic activities on transportation.
C.The relationship between transportation and information flows.
D.Reasons why land and sea transportation routes were important.
25.Why does the writer mention the location of the world’s major cities
A.To encourage more people to move to big cities.
B.To explain why boats and ships continue to be irreplaceable.
C.To recommend water as a convenient and cheap form of transportation.
D.To emphasize the contribution of water transport to human development.
26.What can we learn about air travel
A.Balloons used to be one popular way of air travel.
B.The Montgolfier brothers invented powered flight.
C.The invention of airplanes helped popularize air travel.
D.Air travel became widespread soon after the balloon was invented.
27.What is the total length of high-speed rail track in the world today
A.About 57,000 kms. B.About 45,000 kms.

Passage 5
(2023·浙江·模拟预测)As COVID-19 hit and the world went into varying levels of lockdown (封锁), it became difficult for researchers to know what was happening in the ocean. But now, you can join the eOceans platform to help researchers gather data on oceans and ocean ecosystems in real-time.
Downloading the eOceans app on your smartphone and logging what you see when you are on the coast or in the ocean, including any animals, people, pollution or even an empty beach, you can help researchers monitor the world’s oceans. The app lets you note your observations as well as upload photos. This information is then linked to your geographical location and is made accessible to scientists studying that region. Using eOceans data, researchers can remotely monitor how oceans and coastal communities worldwide are happening, including in the context of the pandemic (疫情).
In reality, observations recorded through eOceans are already providing valuable insights. During Australia’s lockdown, for example, the largest group of turtles in the country’s history was spotted by researchers using eOceans data. And in Hawaii, data from the app suggests that clearer waters are associated with a reduction in tourists during the pandemic.
Negative impacts of the pandemic on the ocean have also been picked up through the app, including an increase in pollution from personal protective equipment, as well as pandemic-related interruptions to marine (海洋的) recovery following a 2019 oil leak in Brazilian waters. In future, data from eOceans could help enable early detection of hazards (危害), such as oil leaks, so that they can be dealt with sooner, says Christine Ward-Paige, founder and chief scientist at eOceans.
“Till now, more than 1,000 people have already joined the eOceans platform,” says Ward-Paige. “But more data on wild life spotted along coastlines, as well as information on how people are using these spaces, are still needed.”
24.How can people help researchers monitor the ocean through the eOceans platform
A.By downloading and observing some data of hazards.
B.By spotting and marking the previous marine recovery.
C.By collecting and uploading timely oceanic information.
D.By detecting and reporting your present geographical location.
25.Which discovery has been made based on the eOceans data
A.An oil leak occurring in Australian waters.
B.The largest turtle found in Australia’s history.
C.A factor contributing to clearer waters in Hawaii.
D.A boom of tourism appearing during the pandemic.
26.What is Ward-Paige’s attitude towards the future of eOceans platform
A.Indifferent. B.Optimistic.
C.Doubtful. D.Anxious.
27.What can be the best title for the text
A.Keeping an eye on the ocean. B.Caring about the ocean pollution.
C.Showing love to coastal creatures. D.Monitoring the quality of seawater.

Passage 6
(2023·浙江统考三模) Wildlife Crossing Bridges
The Wildlife Bridge
In 2018, Utah built a wildlife bridge over the busy highway 1-80. A 4.8-kilometer fence was created to help guide animals to the bridge. Normally, animals take a long time to discover and begin using wildlife bridges, so experts didn’t expect the bridge to get much traffic for several years. But recently, they’ve discovered many different kinds of animals are beginning to move by using the bridge.
The Rope Bridge
On China’s Hainan Island in 2015, scientists created a bridge for Hainan gibbons that are the world’s most endangered primates and normally cross the forest by swinging high in the trees. But after a 2014 typhoon, landslides caused huge gaps in the forest, which were forcing the gibbons to make dangerous jumps. Scientists created a simple and cheap rope bridge, which settled the problem.
The Eco-Bridge
In Uttarakhand state in India, the forest department has built a special "eco-bridge" , made from all-natural materials. It’s 27.5 meters long and runs over one of the busiest highways in the area. Though the bridge is high in the trees, forest department workers hope the bridge will help smaller animals on the ground, too. Already, the bridge has gotten a lot of attention on the Internet, with many people taking photos in front of it every day.
The Park Bridge

27.What is the total length of high-speed rail track in the world today

The Phil Hardberger Park lies in San Antonio, Texas, and recently it has opened what they say is the largest wildlife bridge in the US. This bridge, unlike the others mentioned here, was built for use by both animals and humans. The park says they have already seen deer using the bridge.
21.What has made experts feel unexpected about the Wildlife Bridge
A.It’s been completed within 2 years. B.It’s being used by animals already.
C.It’s become an Internet-famous site. D.It’s America’s biggest wildlife bridge.
22.Which bridges run over highways
A.The Wildlife Bridge and the Eco-Bridge. B.The Wildlife Bridge and the Rope Bridge.
C.The Eco-Bridge and the Park Bridge. D.The Rope Bridge and the Park Bridge.
23.What is the common purpose in building the four bridges
A.To attract more tourists. B.To reduce traffic accidents.
C.To save endangered animals. D.To create wildlife passageways.
