Chinese became an official language of the UN in 1946. More and more UN offices and staff members work with the Chinese language. April 20 marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day, people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Teens has invited three Chinese learners to share stories of their studies.
Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends I started taking a short beginners’ course in Chinese when I was in the UK. Since I came to China in 2021, I have been using an APP on my phone called Hello Chinese. I find reading the small stories on there really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters and then I’ll read them again with just the characters. Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In a social setting, I’m a bit more confident to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese. David House. UK
Chinese can make language simpler When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese. Chinese can be emotive (有感染力的) and often give out information simpler than English. For example, a Chinese sign on campus might read, “疫情期间隔坐,人人有责”. But the English sign would read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part.” The English one is much longer and not as simple. Madeleine King. Australia
Learning is fun with tongue twisters I’ve always been amazed by tongue twisters(绕口令)in Chinese. English has its own tongue twisters, for example: “Sally sells seashells by the sea coast”. But Chinese takes it a step forward with its use of four tones (声调). As a native English speaker, I first learned Chinese through the use of pinyin. But as I found out, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tones can result in different Chinese words, like 马 vs 妈. But things get harder when this is used in tongue twisters! Can you manage this one Fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty; fourteen is not forty, forty is not fourteen. Patrick McCarthy. US
41. What are the ways that David learn Chinese
① He takes short courses in China. ② He reads small stories on an app.
③ He reads pinyin loudly every day. ④ He goes out for dinner with Chinese friends.
A. ① ③ B. ② ④ C. ① ④ D. ② ③
42. According to Madeleine, the difference between Chinese and English is that
A. Chinese has more words than English. B. English can make people feel more emotions.
C. Chinese signs are usually simpler and shorter. D. English is easier to speak and write than Chinese.
43. Why does Patrick think tongue twisters in Chinese are harder
A. Chinese characters have four tones. B. English tongue twisters are usually shorter.
C. Many Chinese words share the same meanings. D. Each Chinese character has a different meaning.

①Zibo city in Shandong has unexpectedly become famous since late February for its barbecue, and this continues as the government takes the chance to promote (推广) tourism and spending in this city.
②The latest promotion gives visitors chances to visit 10 places of interest in the city for free with their train tickets as long as their final stop is Zibo. The Jinan China Railway added a weekend special round-trip “barbecue tour” train between Jinan and Zibo. Passengers who get on the train are greeted by a notice reading “Welcome to the Special BBQ Train”. Many also took videos and put them online drawing more visitors.
③Barbecue is popular in China, but Zibo’s barbecue is different: it’s made on a stove (炉子), and is served with pancakes and dressings (调料). The food is 70-80% cooked before it is brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking it on their own stoves. Diners are served with pancakes and other dressings at the table so they are able to put dressings and other ingredients in the pancake, in the same way Beijing Duck is eaten.
④The barbecue suddenly became famous after a group of college students shot videos of themselves enjoying a meal in Zibo and put them online in late February. Since then, many people, mostly young, have come to the city from all over the country to try the dish. On several streets, lines can be seen outside barbecue restaurants, which stretch (延伸) for more than 100 meters on the weekend.
⑤”Zibo barbecue is bringing more and more people to the city, and the government needs to think about how to promote the city as a whole, its culture and tourism, as well as its living and business environment.” said Sun Xiaorong, an expert of tourism marketing and promotion. The trend (趋势) will finally end if the government doesn’t take proper follow-up actions, he added.
44. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ______.
A. Zibo city’s delicious snacks. B. Zibo city’s places of interest.
C. Zibo city’s efforts to draw visitors D. The challenges Zibo faces at present.
45. Which is TRUE about Zibo’s barbecue from paragraph 3
A.It is very cheap but tastes pretty good. B. It is as delicious as Beijing Duck.
C. It is well cooked before being brought to the table. D. It is usually served with pancakes and dressings.
46. What made Zibo’s barbecue suddenly well-known
A. Foreign young visitors’ videos. B. Local government’s actions.
C. Barbecue restaurants in Zibo city. D. Some college students’ videos online.
47. Which is the best title for the passage
A.Zibo City Becomes Famous for Barbecue B. Zibo Government Takes Action to Promote the City
C. Barbecue Spreads Its Popularity All Over China D. College Students Enjoy Their Barbecue Tour

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws(吸管) and bags. More and more businesses are switching (转换) to paper products as an alternative (可供选择的事物). Paper is considered by many to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere (大气). They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation (毁林).
Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents.
The most environment-friendly solution is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. Through increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
48. What can trees do to the environment
A.They can make carbon dioxide levels lower in the air. B.They can improve climate quickly.
C.They can cause more deforestation in the end. D.They can provide materials for paper products.
49. From Paragraph 4, we can know that ________.
A.plastic products are much better than paper ones
B.paper products are easy to transport
C.one truck is needed to transport two million plastic bags
D.plastic products often lead to a larger amount of a waste
50.According to the passage, which should people use in order to protect the environment
A.Recycled paper bags. B. Steel knives and forks .C. Strong plastic chairs. D. Single-use cups.
51. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage

“Well, I’ll eat the cake,” Alice said. “If I get taller, I can reach the key on the table. And if get smaller, I can go under the door into the garden.” Then she finished the cake very soon.
“I shall be as tall as a house in a minute,” she said. She tried to look down at her feet, and could only just see them.
Just then her head hit the ceiling of the room. She was now about three meters tall. Quickly, she took the key from the table and hurried to the garden door. But she was too tall to go through the door. She began to cry. The tears ran down her face, and soon there was large pool of salt water all around her on the floor. Suddenly she heard a voice, and she stopped crying to listen.
“Oh, the Duchess(公爵夫人), the Duchess! She’ll be very angry! I’m late, and she’s waiting for me. Oh dear, oh dear!”
It was the White Rabbit again. He was hurrying down the long room, with a pair of white gloves in one hand and a fan in the other hand.
Alice was afraid, but she needed help. So she said in a low voice, “Oh, please, sir.”
Her voice frightened(使惊恐)the Rabbit. He dropped the gloves and the fan, and ran away quickly.
Alice picked up the gloves and the fan. The room was very hot, so she cooled down with the fan. She said, “Oh dear! How strange everything is today! Shall I get smaller during the night ”
She began to feel very unhappy again, but then she looked down at her hand. She was wearing one of the Rabbit's white gloves. “How did I get it on my hand ” she thought. “Oh, I’m getting smaller again! I’m already less than a meter tall and getting smaller every second! How can I stop it ” She saw the fan in her other hand. “It must be the fan!” she thought, and quickly she dropped it.
She was now very, very small, and the key was still lying on the table.
“Things are worse than ever,” thought poor Alice. She turned away from the door, and fell into salt water, right up to her neck. At first, she thought it was the sea, but then she saw it was the pool of her own tears.
“Oh, why did I cry so much ” said Alice. She swam around and looked for a way out, but the pool was very big. Just then she saw an animal in the water near her. It looked like a large animal to Alice, but it was only a mouse.
“Shall I speak to it ” thought Alice. “Everything is very strange here, so perhaps a mouse can speak.”
Then she began, “Oh, mouse, do you know the way out of this pool I am very tired of swimming.”
But the mouse looked at her with its little eyes and said nothing.
“Perhaps it doesn’t understand English,” thought Alice. “Perhaps it’s a French mouse.” So she began again, and said in French, “Where is my cat ” (This was first sentence in her French book.)
The mouse jumped half out of the water and looked at her angrily.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” cried Alice quickly. “Of course, you don’ like cats, do you ”
“No. I don’t like cats,” the mouse replied.

Now the US government is considering banning TikTok. Some US users share their opinions on the possible ban.
Hana Schwarz. I think it’s funny. They are trying to stop us from using TikTok, but many other social media websites are doing similar things. 56 . But in my opinion, the system provides me with short videos that I want to watch. 57 . I don’t care about the worries lawmakers have about TikTok. For me, as long as the users enjoy the videos, it’s fine.
Darlette Wilson. When I heard the news, I was very surprised and upset. TikTok shows interesting videos to more people and unites people to have more fun. 58 . TikTok has changed so many lives. People make new careers out of it, and some even raise money for a good cause. 59 . It becomes a very important part of many people’s lives.
Alex Pearlman. I don’t understand this ban on TikTok. It looks like the government doesn’t want people from other countries to run media companies. 60 . For example, the Wall Street Journal, a famous newspaper in the US, is owned by an Australian. If the government is afraid that China is spying on us through TikTok, they should ban every smartphone for sale on Amazon – because many of them are made in China!

You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard(胡and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman stands on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote(纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang passed away at the age of 94 on Feb 18, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit of Lijiang River—being positive (积极的) and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape(风景), commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example, on the back of the5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times, many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country,” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.
61. When did Huang Quande become a photo model
62. What does the image of the fisherman stand for, according to Guangming Daily
63. On which banknote is the picture of Mount Tai in Shandong
64. What do the pictures on the banknotes bring to these places
65. What do you think of these renminbi pictures
