the useful expressions.
This story is about the expedition by Earnest Shackleton to make the first land crossing of Antarctica.
Ernest Shackleton and his crew went aboard the ship named Endurance. As they approached Antarctica, unfortunately, their ship got stuck in the ice, sinking into the sea. Having abandoned the ship, they escaped to Elephant Island. As there wasn't any chance of being rescued on Elephant Island, Shackleton ventured more than 1,300 kilometers with five of his men to search for help. The crew left behind had to face the extreme weather and cold as well as a dangerous environment and all with limited supplies. All of this added to the mental challenge, but they maintained a positive state of mind, and their perseverance and faith in Shackleton was rewarded—they were finally rescued.
What I like most about this story is that although their expedition failed in achieving its goal, it was not the disaster it could have been. This was due to Shackleton’s courage in facing adversity and the crew’s endurance and perseverance in surviving for so long. In a word, I have learned an important lesson from the inspiring story. That is, whatever difficulties we meet, never abandon ourselves to despair.
Discussion: If you were one of the men on Elephant Island, would you have trusted Shackleton Why or why not
I would have trusted Shackleton as he was a man of honour and would do all he possibly could to save us.
