Love, joy and the warm feeling of getting together don’t cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So what should a poor family do
When I was 10, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted for the New Year was a pogo stick (弹簧单高跷). However, my mother said it was so expensive that we couldn’t afford one.
On a Saturday before New Year, my family went shopping together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts, my dad said, “I’ll be back soon—I need to see something in the tool area.” A moment later, he came back with a long box. I remembered wondering if there was a pogo stick in it.
When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so excited and I knew as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom (扫帚).
That New Year morning, I got some gifts like a tiger toy and a saving pot, but I didn’t get the present that I really wanted. How upset I felt at that moment though I didn’t want my parents to see!
After cleaning up the room, my dad went to the garage. When he came back, he was carrying a beautiful pogo stick. I couldn’t believe it! My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on me.

One day, three of my friends came to our house.
They told me they wanted to go to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, “Yes, I want to go with you.”
We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.
We left Brazil on the first of September, 1655. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other products.
At the beginning of our journey the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.
The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.
When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, “Land ” and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were crowded in the boat, and it had no sail.
The waves were very big. The wind was extremely strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.
Suddenly, a huge wave appeared and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t see the others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.
Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I tried to go further the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

The world uses about a thousand million (百万) tons of water a day. Water is a human right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the wastewater.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water—that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then desalination businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries. They process (加工) more than 92 million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.

Many volunteers have helped senior citizens(老年人)learn to use smartphones. But for all their goodwill, the service has some flaws(缺陷). It takes much time and effort, and more importantly, older people can easily forget what they’ve learned and the volunteers have to do the same job time and time again.
Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School noticed the problems and tried to solve them with a guidebook. The 16-year-old founded a volunteer group called SilverHair. Its seven members spent around half a year writing a 300-page book called May I Show You How to Use Smartphones.
The group members made a survey of more than 1,000 senior citizens and talked with many in nursing homes and found out what the older people care most about with smartphones. “How to use WeChat” topped the list as the app covers many parts of life such as chatting and money transfers(转账). These make up one chapter of the book. The other nine chapters include the basic functions of phones, online shopping, using online maps and more. To make the book more friendly to older readers, Liu also made the pages pale yellow and the characters big.
“Many senior citizens are resistant to smartphones at first, but they are familiar with books, which can make them more willing to learn,” said Liu. “And besides, they can look in the book any time they need, just like using a dictionary.”
The SilverHair members have printed out 500 copies with their own money and handed them all out. They’ll soon start working on the second edition which includes more guidance such as hospital registration(挂号)and photo editing. They also hope for monetary support from the public so they can print more copies and help more people.

I lay on the beach for a long time. When I felt stronger, I stood up and looked around. “Where am I ” I asked myself. “Is this an island or the mainland Are there any people here Any dangerous wild animals ”
It was getting dark and I was still very tired.
“I must look for somewhere safe to spend the night,” I thought. I found a big tree not far from the shore and I climbed up into the branches. It made a comfortable bed and I fell asleep immediately.
The next morning the sky was blue and there was no wind. I could see the ship from my bed in the tree. I decided to swim to it.
I climbed on board and had a look around. First of all, I went to the kitchen because I was feeling very hungry. Luckily all the bread in the cupboard was still dry.
While I was walking around the ship I thought, “The ship is going to sink. I must make a raft and take all the food back to the shore before it’s too late.”
I found some pieces of wood on the ship. I threw them into the water and joined them together with ropes. It took me a long time, but I was happy with the result. I watched the raft I made. It was flat and far away from being a boat or a hip. In fact, it was more like a much larger door lying on the water. But it can float on it. That’s enough. My raft was big and strong. I loaded it with lots of useful things from the ship: tools, guns, gunpowder, food, drink and clothes.
Finally, I made a little sail for my raft and I set off for the shore. It was a long, slow journey, but I arrived safely without losing anything.
I made two more trips to the ship that day. Then, before it got too dark, I built a small tent. I put everything inside it and went to bed.
The next day, I returned to the ship and took away as much as I could find, including a Bible. I also took the two cats and the dog that were on board. The dog was my best friend for many years. On my thirteenth day on the island, there was another terrible storm. The wind blew hard all day and all night. When I woke up the next morning, the ship was no longer there.
“Now I must build a house to live in.” I thought. “I have a lot of things, so it must be big. It must be near fresh water. It must be a cool place because the sun is hot during the day. And it must have a view of the sea. If a ship passes, I don’t want to miss it.”
There was a big hill just behind my tent on the beach. I walked to the top of it and looked around. All I could see for miles and miles was water! Now I knew that I was on an island! I suddenly felt very alone.
Halfway down the hill I found a large flat piece of ground. There was a good view of the sea from the front of it and a high rock at the back.
“This is the perfect place to build my house.” I thought.

People who jog or run for as little as five minutes a day can increase their lives by about three years, a Us study says.
The researchers study the exercise habits of over 55,000 adults in the United States for 6 to 22 years. About 24 percent of the adults described themselves as pared to those who didn’t run, they were 30 percent less likely to die of any cause during the course of the study.
The researchers divided the runners up into five groups. The study was based on the time they spent running every week. Those in the lowest group spent about 50 minutes running over a seven-day period. Those in the highest group ran for more than 175 minutes over the course of a week. According to the study, the benefits of running are pretty much the same for all runners.
The researchers also measured (测量) running in other ways-by total weekly distance (距离), frequency (频率) and speed. Even the runners in the lowest groups were healthier than the non-runners.
“No matter how slow you run or how much time you spend running, if you develop a habit of running, you will become healthier,” the researchers said. To reduce the risk of early death, all it takes is 30 to 59 minutes of running every week.
“This finding has public health importance,” the report continued. “For most people, time is one of the main reasons to take part in physical activity. This study may encourage more people to start running. People who are too busy to exercise may love the advantages of a five-minute run.”
