I. Teaching content
Reading and Thinking: Learn to make choices in life
II. Learning Aims
The second period:
Through this course, students will be able to:
1. predict the content of the text according to text features.
2. Sort out Dr. Lin Qiaozhi's life and deeds in chronological order.
3. Summarize Dr. Lin Qiaozhi's several significant choices, and the principles of life, characters and virtues embodied in these choices.
4. Establish a positive outlook on life and values from Lin Qiaozhi's life experience, and her views on life choices.
The third period:
Through this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify the genre structure features of character biography.
2. Analyze the complex sentence patterns in the text and find the sentences worth remembering or appreciating.
3. Use the new words or sentences correctly in combination with the context, summarize what you have learned, and express your life goals and dreams.
Ⅲ. Teaching ideas
In the second lesson, students can learn about Dr. Lin's life experience through reading, analyze her life choices and character, and get inspiration from this outstanding person, establish correct values, and plan their own life. In the third lesson, students can observe and summarize the text features and language features of the biography, pay attention to the language structure, and then use the language to express and transfer the application.
Ⅳ. Teaching Procedures
Activity 1: Talk about important life choices.
Listen to the teacher sharing his / her important choices in life and discuss the following questions.
● What are the most important life choices
● Do you think these choices might become moral dilemmas in life Why
● If your answer is yes , what would you do
设计说明:该活动通过让教师分享自己的人生经历来启发学生思考人生不同阶段的重要抉择,帮助他们理解作出人生抉择的重要意义,鼓励他们表达自己的观点。
Activity 2: Make predictions about the reading passage.
Look at the title of the text and the pictures and answer these questions.
● What do the title and the pictures tell you about Dr Lin Qiaozhi
● What type of text is it
● What do you think the author might write about in the text Make a list of the things that you think should be covered .
设计说明:学生通过看课文标题和配图可初步了解有关林巧稚的背景信息,比如她生活的时代,所从事的医学专业等。让学生根据文本特点预测文章的内容,目的是为下面的阅读作充分准备。
Activity 3: Read for the gist.
Read the text for the first time to check whether your predictions are correct . Then work out the main idea of the text.
设计说明:让学生阅读课文后验证自己的猜测是否正确,实际上也使学生对课文的主要内容也有了大致了解。让学生找出文章的大意主要是为了考查学生整体理解能力和概括能力。
Activity 4: Make a timeline of the important events in Lin Qiaozhi ' s life.
Read the text carefully and find out all of the important events and choices in Lin Qiaozhi ' s life and their results. Then complete a table like the one below.

Activity 5:Analyse Lin Qiaozhi ' s choices and her qualities.
In pairs brainstorm what adjectives you would use to describe Lin Qiaozhi and then make a list.
Work in groups of four. Choose three to five adjectives that best describe her qualities and use evidence to support your ideas . Then make a mind map.
Each group presents the mind map to the class and explains what kind of person Lin Qiaozhi was by using these expressions.

Activity 1: Share your feelings about Lin Qiaozhi .
Work in groups. Take turns to read aloud the paragraph you have written about Lin Qiaozhi.
Choose the most impressive ideas from group members and then share them with the whole class.

Activity 2: Study the characteristics of a brief biography .
Read the text in the Reading and Thinking section and discuss the following questions .
●Does the text describe the life of a real person or an imaginary person
●Is it written in the first person or the third person
●Is it an imaginative , informative , or persuasive text
●What kinds of events or details are included in the text
●In what order are all the events organised
●Do you think the information in the text is truthful or reliable How do you know
Check the answers and then summarise the characteristics of a brief biography.

Read through some complicated sentences chosen by the teacher and paraphrase them using your own words .
