When I was a child, I always wanted to be a superhero. I wanted to save the world and make everyone happy. But I knew that I’d need superpowers to make my dreams come true. So I used to embark on these imaginary journeys to find intergalactic (星系之间的) objects from planet Krypton, but didn’t yield much result. When I grew up and realized that science fiction was not a good source for superpowers, I decided instead to embark on a journey of real science, to find a more useful truth. I started my journey in California, with a UC Berkeley 30-year longitudinal study that examined the photos of students in an
old yearbook, and tried to measure their success and well-being throughout their life.
By measuring the students ’ smiles, researchers were able to predict how fulfilling and long-lasting a subject’s marriage would be, how well she would score on standardized tests of well-being, and how
inspiring she would be to others.
Another aha! moment came from a 2010 Wayne State University span research project that looked into pre- 1950s baseball cards of Major League players. The researchers found that the span of a player’s smile could actually assist to predict the span of his life. Players who didn’t smile in their pictures lived an
average of only 72.9 years, while players with beaming smiles lived an average of almost 80 years.
British researchers found that one smile can generate the same level of brain stimulation as up to
2,000 bars of chocolate. Wait — The same study found that smiling is as stimulating as receiving up to 16,000 in cash. That’s like $25,000 a smile. It’s not bad. And think about it this way: 25,000 times 400— children smile as many as 400 times per day —quite a few kids out there feel like Mark Zuckerberg every
day.
So whenever you want to tap into a superpower that will help you and everyone around you live a
longer, healthier, happier life, smile.
24. Why did the author shift to pursuing scientific research
A. Because he discovered galactic objects during childhood.
B. Because he realized sci-fi couldn’t bring superpowers.
C. Because he dreamed of global happiness since youth.
D. Because he embarked on these fictional journeys.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A. Every child smiles 400 times per day.
B. Kids who smile are as rich as Zukerberg.
C. Smiling is equal to eating 2,000 bars of chocolate.
D. Smiling can gain stimulation alike receiving cash.
26. What’s the author’s attitude towards the effect of smiles on people
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. The journey to find the truth. B. The hidden power of smiling.
C. The secret to a long and healthy life. D. The significance of superhero studies.

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But
hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by

themselves. It’s called Seatrac.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (活动梯) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the ramp. It’s even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair
after going for a swim.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were a “sack of potatoes” . Mr. Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to enjoy the water. He worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. In time, they formed a company called TOBEA
to build and sell the systems.
The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar powered and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Scatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when
swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. Thanks to Seatrac, people who use wheelchairs now have the chance to cool down with a dip in the
sea.
28. Which of the following can best describe Scatrac
A. Practical and user-friendly. B. Automatic and life-saving.
C. Flexible and energy-efficient. D. Stylish and smooth-running.
29. Why did Mr. Fotiou design Seatrac
A. He desired to make a profit from it.
B. He longed to form a wheelchair company.
C. He wanted to help his friend have fun in the sea.
D. He hoped to save his friend from others ’ ridiculing.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The advantages of the Seatrac system. B. The success of the TOBEA company.
C. The efforts of the TOBEA company. D. The application of the Seatrac system.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To encourage care for disabled people.
B. To explain the principle of the Seatrac system.
C. To provide strategies for building a wheelchair.
D. To introduce a new invention for wheelchair users.

Can you imagine getting a tooth pulled out or other major dental procedures without pain-killer A scientist colleague of mine used a “focus in” technique instead of requesting pain-killer at the dentist. Each time the dentist touched the tooth, my colleague felt bubbles of joy, and this lasted until the dentist
interrupted by asking, “Why are you smiling ”
A fair question at this point is why anyone would want to be fully aware of intense or painful procedures. But what may sound like a punishing choice—to directly face hurt or suffering—may in some instances be beneficial. A stream of scientific articles suggests that there are benefits in turning toward discomfort or negative emotions with acceptance. In addition, all of us can gain from finding ways to cope with stress and suffering—particularly when larger circumstances are beyond our control. As a researcher who has studied meditation (冥想) for more than 20 years, I believe that the development of calmness, a central element of certain mindfulness meditation practices, can help. I’m not advocating for people to put themselves in dangerous or painful positions. But when we push ourselves into challenging or confusing
situations, much like trainers who push athletes just past their comfort zone to make gains, learning often

happens. Indeed, a 2022 study with more than 2,000 people demonstrated that those participants who were publicly encouraged to push themselves into awkward, uncomfortable situations—including taking classes to boost self-confidence and reading about opposing viewpoints—later reported the greatest degree of
personal growth.
My own research indicates that meditation provides an ideal way to practice turning toward discomfort—particularly when it trains up one’s calm mind. People who reported higher levels of
calmness reported less psychological distress (困扰).
Right now people are hurting for many reasons and looking for ways to cope. Without question, there are many important steps we need to take collectively to respond to these challenges. But we can each build our ability to recover on a personal level as well by cultivating greater acceptance of our
experience—good or bad, painful or pleasant—in the present moment.
32. The author uses the first question in Paragraph 1 to .
A. introduce the topic. B. illustrate an argument.
C. highlight an opinion. D. promote a pain-killer.
33. What is the benefit of turning towards discomfort and negative emotions
A. It helps in avoiding suffering fully. B. It increases psychological distress.
C. It leads to personal growth. D. It promotes a sense of calmness.
34. What is the author’s view on putting oneself in dangerous or painful positions
A. The author encourages it as a way to improve fitness.
B. The author discourages it due to its potential harm.
C. The author believes it is necessary for personal growth.
D. The author recommends it to those confused trainers.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Turning Towards Discomfort: My Experience of Staying Stressful and Successful

Soothe the Sunday scaries
Most of us look forward to the weekend as a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and deal with tasks from a to-do list that gets neglected during the workweek. But as the weekend comes to an end, many are missing out on Sunday Funday and instead experiencing an overwhelming sense of anxiety and even dread about the upcoming week. 36 Some people describe it as a heaviness they can feel in
their body, while others feel so unsettled that they could jump out of their skin.
Even though the Sunday scaries are common, they are manageable. Here’s how experts say you can
ease your end-of-weekend anxiety.
Structure your Sunday. 37 You might still go through that sense of dread, but that feeling is
harder to hold on to when you ’ re engaging in something that makes you feel good.
Don’t forget to relax. If you’re feeling more stress, it’s important to make space for relaxing activities to ground yourself. Maybe a midafternoon shower or bath, maybe an engaging movie or show,
whatever feels like a helpful distraction to reground from the scaries.
Identify your anxiety sources. Try to figure out what’s really causing you to dread the week. 38 Even if there’s not a single reason behind your Sunday anxiety, organizing the stress into small
parts can help make it all more manageable.
39 Getting rid of the Sunday scaries isn’t just about minimizing the gloom of the week ahead. Have something to look forward to. This gives you the opportunity to shift your thoughts to fun and will
help improve your mood.
End your Sunday with the right energy. Sunday night is a proper wind-down time. Maybe you
want to journal, do a face mask, read a few pages of a good book. Do your best to honor this time and

E. Then you feel empowered and confident that you’ll be ready for the next day.
