Forecasters say Floridians should monitor a system likely to become a tropical depression (热带低压) as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week.
The area of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea was producing showers and thunderstorms, according to a Friday evening update from the National Hurricane Center. Conditions favor slow development over the next several days, and forecasters expect the system will become a tropical depression early next week while moving north over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Michael Brennan, the National Hurricane Center director, said in a live video Friday, “There is a lot of uncertainty with this system since it’s yet to take shape. What we’re most confident in is that there will likely be some rainfall impacts across much of the Florida Peninsula and possibly up along the southeast coast of the United States.”
“The potential threat for Florida would come around on Tuesday,” said Brian McNoldy, a researcher at the University of Miami. McNoldy added that global models were in agreement that the system would develop slowly. The hurricane center on Friday gave the system the temporary name of Invest 93L, meaning forecasters would collect specialized data and run more models.
According to Mark Luther, a professor at the University of South Florida, tropical systems like to feed off that hot water, especially when it’s hot below the surface like it is now. “Keep a sharp eye on it and have your hurricane plan in place,” Luther said. “Even if it’s a small storm, if it hits at the right angle, it can cause flooding around here.”
Storms that cross through this steamy section of the eastern Gulf of Mexico have historically intensified (增强) quickly. Hurricane Michael in 2018 emerged off the Yucatán Peninsula before finally \ making landfall as a Category 5 storm in Florida’s Panhandle.
4. What did Brennan think would most likely happen next week ( )
A. Water shortage. B. Severe damage. C. Fine weather. D. Heavy rainfall.
5. What did Luther probably expect people to do ( )
A. Ask for clear guidance. B. Be watchful about possible disasters.
C. Make a quick decision. D. Send relief to flood victims at once.
6. Why does the author mention Hurricane Michael ( )
A. To express his heartfelt thanks for the rescue effort.
B. To erase scientists’ doubts about these global models.
C. To prove the weather forecast is timely and accurate.
D. To explain the tropical system may bring heavy storm.
7. What is the text ( )
A. A news report. B. A diary entry. C. A children’s story. D. A research paper.
C
A small study out of Skidmore College examined the advantages of morning vs, evening exercise for both women and men. Paul, professor for health at Skidmore, led the study.
“We had the groups divided into evening and morning groups,” he says. “We found women and men answered differently to different types of exercise depending on the time of the day, which surprised us.”
The study showed that for women who want to lower blood pressure (血压), the risk of heart disease or reduce fat, morning exercise works best. Those women hoping for upper body muscle (肌肉) gains or mood(心情) improvement should consider evening exercise. For the men, the findings were somewhat different: Evening exercise lowers blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, and feelings of tiredness. But similar to women, they burn more fat with morning exercise.
“For many people, the best time to exercise will depend on their chronotype,” says Heisz, author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind.
“Chronotype is your body’s natural habit to sleep at a certain time — it’s what decides whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. For the 25% of the population that considers themselves a night owl, getting both enough sleep and enough exercise can be difficult,” adds Heisz.
He continues, “Sleep — which provides your body the necessary time to recover (恢复) and make gains from exercise — should always be the first choice. When it comes to exercise, regardless of research on the advantages of certain exercises at particular times of the day, your results will not be good if it doesn’t allow enough time for sleep.”
8. What can women get by doing evening exercise according to the study ( )
A. A fat loss. B. A good mood.
C. A lower blood pressure. D. A smaller risk of heart disease.
9. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5 ( )
A. Give an example. B. Tell the difference.
C. Do an experiment. D. Explain a term.
10. What does Heisz think is important to achieve good results of exercise ( )
A. Enough sleep. B. Low-fat food. C. Plenty of water. D. Lots of exercise.
11. What is the best title for the text ( )
A. A Night Owl or an Early Bird B. Why Fitness Plan Being Important
C. How to Change Your Exercise Time D. The Best Time of an Day to Exercise
D
Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach!
For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.
Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) — and a bucket is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today’s expression: “bringing sand to the beach.”
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose.
To bring sand to the beach can also mean overkill. Overkill means to do or have more than what is necessary or useful. Often when using this expression, we say “like”. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.
We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant.” With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).
12. What does the author mainly tell us in Paragraph 2 ( )
A. Activities on a beach trip. B. Necessary things for an enjoyable beach trip.
C. Pleasure enjoyed on a beach. D. Ways to make a trip comfortable.
13. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 4 probably mean ( )
A. Useless. B. Common. C. Dangerous. D. Meaningful.
14. What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store ( )
A. They are sweet. B. They are proper gifts.
C. They are not good enough. D. They are not needed there.
15. Which saying has the similar meaning to “bringing a sandwich to a restaurant” ( )
A. Seeing is believing. B. Killing two birds with one stone.
C. Teaching a fish how to swim. D. Thinking twice before you jump.
The Feynman Technique (费曼学习法) is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. You can take the following five simple steps to study better.
Find out the topic you want to learn. 16 . Otherwise, you’ll end up jumping between topics without developing a deeper understanding of any of them.
Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the Feynman Technique— 17 . This requires you to meet the children at their level of understanding by using the simplest way.
Identify areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically (批判性地) review the explanation you came up with in Step Two. 18 . Try to find any knowledge gaps, together with any areas where you felt that you couldn’t explain the topic simply.
Improve and optimize (优化) your explanation. Think about all the knowledge gaps and other areas of improvement you found before. 19 .
Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. Keep going through each step you’re fully satisfied with your explanation. 20 , and that is why going through all the prior steps just once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery.
A. Use those to improve your explanation
B. To do so, take a critical look at your explanation
C. Make sure that your explanation is interest-based
D. Your explanations need to be short and to the point
E. The Feynman Technique works best with a repeat
F. It’s important that you clearly know the topics you’re trying to learn
G. Explaining the topic simply enough to be understood by a sixth-grade student

My son Joey was born with disabled feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally — but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in surgery, casts and braces. By the time he was eight, you wouldn’t know he had a problem when you saw him walk.
The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. Although I was a little worried about his state, we never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know it. Every day after school, he would run and jump crazily, laughing cheerfully with his friends. Before bed, he was delighted to share everything that he enjoyed with me, and the brightness on his face drove away all my anxiety.
In his seventh grade, the school planned to hold a cross-country race. On hearing the news, he jumped with joy, and he decided to go out for the cross-country team. What worried me most was the extreme strength and patience that was required for the race. However, his strong determination eventually changed my attitude towards the event. I made up mind to be in favor of him. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others — perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn’t tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know.
注意:
One day, he got a fever, and I advised him to have a rest. ____________________________________________

根据第五段“ ‘Chronotype is your body’s natural habit to sleep at a certain time—it’s what decides whether you’re a night owl or an early bird. For the 25% of the population that considers themselves a night owl, getting both enough sleep and enough exercise can be difficult,’ adds Heisz.(‘生物钟是你身体在特定时间睡觉的自然习惯,它决定了你是夜猫子还是早起鸟。对于25%的认为自己是夜猫子的人来说,获得足够的睡眠和足够的锻炼是很困难的,’海斯补充道。)”可知,在本段作者解释了一个术语——生物钟。故选D。
10. A细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“When it comes to exercise, regardless of research on the advantages of certain exercises at particular times of the day, your results will not be good if it doesn’t allow enough time for sleep.(说到运动,不管研究表明在一天中的特定时间进行某些运动有什么好处,如果没有足够的睡眠时间,你的结果都不会好。)” 故选A。
根据第一段中的“A small study out of Skidmore College examined the advantages of morning vs, evening exercise for both women and men. (斯基德莫尔学院的一项小型研究调查了早晚锻炼对女性和男性的好处。)”和第三段“The study showed that for women who want to lower blood pressure, the risk of heart disease or reduce fat, morning exercise works best. Those women hoping for upper body muscle gains or mood improvement should consider evening exercise. For the men, the findings were somewhat different: Evening exercise lowers blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, and feelings of tiredness. But similar to women, they burn more fat with morning exercise.(研究表明,对于想要降低血压、心脏病风险或减少脂肪的女性来说,晨练效果最好。
Bringing sand to the beach
根据第二段“For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.(去海滩旅行,我们带几样东西可以使旅行更愉快。例如,沙滩巾让坐在沙滩上更舒服。有些人选择带一把沙滩椅。一把沙滩伞可以保护你免受强烈的阳光照射。在海里游泳真的会让你很饿。所以很多人带冷藏箱来装食物和饮料。)”可知,作者在第二段主要告诉我们愉快的海滩之旅必备的东西。故选B。
13. A词句猜测题。根据画线单词前一句“ ‘Bringing sand to the beach’ describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary.(‘把沙子带到海滩’描述的是毫无意义和不必要的行为。)” 故选A。
根据第五段中的“For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.(例如,带鲜花去参加花店开业活动就像把沙子带到海滩。)”
根据最后一段中的“It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).【这也意味着你带来的东西(三明治)的质量比你在这个地方(餐馆)找到的要差。】” 由此可知,“bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”这句话的意思和C项“Teaching a fish how to swim.(班门弄斧。)”

One day, he got a fever, and I advised him to have a rest. However, he insisted on going to school as usual. Worried and concerned, I went to look for him after school. On the playground, I found him running all alone, his face pale. On seeing the scene, my tears welled up, and I asked him how he felt. “Okay,” he said breathlessly. “The race is approaching, and I must get well prepared for it!” Beads of sweat streamed down his neck and his face was red, yet he looked straight ahead and kept running.
Two weeks later, the big day came. The names of the team runners were announced, and Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. He was in seventh grade—the other six team members were all eighth-graders. When the race began, I cheered him on loudly and he ran just like an arrow from the bowstring. Before I knew it, he was well ahead of others. It was obvious that he would be the champion. Seeing the bright smile on his face at the end of the track, I knew a lesson that there shouldn’t be any limitation to a heart to succeed.
