Phil White has just returned from an 18,000 mile, around the world bicycle trip. White had two reasons for making this epic journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised 70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White’s second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.
White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than 1,300 hours in the saddle (车座) and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road.
The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures.
4. When Phil White returned from his trip, he ________.
A. broke the world record
B. collected money for Oxfam
C. destroyed several bikes
D. travelled about 1,300 hours
5. What does the word “epic” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean
A. Very slow but exciting.
B. Very long and difficult.
C. Very smooth but tiring.
D. Very lonely and depressing.
6. During his journey around the world, Phil White ________.
A. fought heroically against robbers in Iran
B. experienced the extremes of heat and cold
C. managed to ride against the wind in Australia
D. had a team of people who travelled with him
7. Which of the following words can best describe Phil White
A. Imaginative. B. Patriotic. C. Modest. D. Determined.
B 5. B 6. C 7. D

根据第一段第三句“First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised 70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam.”(首先,他想利用这次旅行为慈善机构筹款,他做到了。
根据这句话“White had two reasons for making this epic journey.”(White有2个原因要做这次epic旅行。) 根据第一段第一句“Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile, around-the-world bicycle trip.”(Phil White刚刚结束了18000公里的世界骑自行车旅行回来。) 根据第三段“The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road.”(旅途中,他有时会孤独和绝望。
根据第三段“The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For l,000 kilometers he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him.”(他遇到的最糟糕的事情,就是在穿越澳大利亚南部的公路上逆风骑自行车。
根据第三段“The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road.”(旅途中,他有时会孤独和绝望。

How does an ecosystem (生态系统) work What makes the populations of different species the way they are Why are there so many flies and so few wolves To find an answer, scientists have built mathematical models of food webs, noting who eats whom and how much each one eats.
With such models, scientists have found out some key principles operating in food webs. Most food webs, for instance, consist of many weak links rather than a few strong ones. When a predator (掠食动物) always eats huge numbers of a single prey (猎物) , the two species are strongly linked; when a predator lives on various species, they are weakly linked. Food webs may be dominated by many weak links because that arrangement is more stable over the long term. If a predator can eat several species, it can survive the extinction (灭绝) of one of them. And if a predator can move on to another species that is easier to find when a prey species becomes rare, the switch allows the original prey to recover. The weak links may thus keep species from driving one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems. In the 1960s, scientists proposed that predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based on mathematical models. Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human activities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline. Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point (临界点) , it is remarkably difficult for them to return.
8. A strong link is found between two species when a predator ______.
A. has a wide food choice B. can easily find new prey
C. sticks to one prey species D. can quickly move to another place
9 What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline
A. The prey species they directly attack will die out.
B. The species they indirectly attack will turn into top predators.
C. The living environment of other species will remain unchanged.
D. The populations of other species will experience unexpected changes.
10. What conclusion can be drawn from the examples in Paragraph 4
A. Uncontrolled human activities greatly upset ecosystems.
B. Rapid economic development threatens animal habitats.
C. Species of commercial value dominate other species.
D Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.
11. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance
A. By getting illegal practices under control.
B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.
D. By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.
C 9. D 10. A 11. D
根据第二段第三句“When a predator always eats huge numbers of a single prey, the two species are strongly linked…”
根据第三 段“Mathematical models have also revealed that food webs may be unstable, where small changes of top predators can lead to big effects throughout entire ecosystems.…predators at the top of a food web had a surprising amount of control over the size of populations of other species—including species they did not directly attack.”
根据第四段“And unplanned human activities have proved the idea of top-down control by top predators to be true. In the ocean, we fished for top predators such as cod on an industrial scale, while on land, we killed off large predators such as wolves. These actions have greatly affected the ecological balance.”
根据本段中“Prevention is key, scientists say, because once ecosystems pass their tipping point, it is remarkably difficult for them to return.”
D
Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, “operates under the theory of what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine,” says his mother. “The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers (剑). Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones.”
“Examine the extended family, and you’ll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It’s an inheritable trait,” says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance (支配地位) when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.
Whether it’s inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands of the young isn’t healthy for children or the family. Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, “have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” It’s the parents’ role to provide that protection.
When a “boss child” doesn’t learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.
“I see more and more parents giving up their power,” says Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years. “They bend too far because they don’t want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious.”
12. Bossy children like Stephen Jackson ______.
A. make good decisions B. show self-centeredness
C. lack care from others D. have little sense of fear
13. The underlined phrase “inheritable trait” in paragraph 2 means ______.
A. inborn nature B. developed character C. accepted theory D. particular environment
14. The study on bossy behavior implies that parents ______.
A. should give more power to their children B. should be strict with their children
C. should not be so anxious about their children D. should not set limits for their children
15. Bossy children may probably become ______.
A. relaxed B. skillful C. hesitant D. lonely
B 13. A 14. B 15. D

9. What will happen if the populations of top predators in a food web greatly decline
D. Industrial activities help keep food webs stable.
11. How does an early-warning system help us maintain the ecological balance
A. By getting illegal practices under control.
B. By stopping us from killing large predators.
C. By bringing the broken-down ecosystems back to normal.
D By signaling the urgent need for taking preventive action.

A. relaxed B. skillful C. hesitant D. lonely
