Born in Russia and living in an orphanage for the first 13 months of her life, Jessica Long had no idea what her future would hold. The little girl born with Fibular Hemimelia would not only go on to be a 13-time gold medal-winning Paralympic champion, but she would inspire others to chase their dreams.
Long was born in Russia, where she lived in an orphanage until her parents adopted her in 1993. Soon after being adopted, she had to have her legs amputated(截肢)at only a year and a half. “It gave me a lot of freedom and movement,” Long said. “But growing up was definitely really hard. From a very early age, I just decided that I was going to be unstoppable and I wasn`t going to let my legs hold me back.” From that point forward, she didn`t let anyone tell her what she was or wasn`t capable of doing. She started doing gymnastics as a kid. Then, in 2002, Long found her sport for life: swimming!
“I was the only girl with no legs on the swim team,” she said. “There were moments I struggled, but my teammates treated me like a friend. When I look back on my life and I think about anyone on that team, no one made fun of me for having no legs and they were so kind.” Long defied(顶住)all odds and surprised everyone when she qualified at age only 12 for the Paralympics in 2004 in Athens. After four Paralympics, Long has won 13 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals. She has dozens of World Championship medals and has broken numerous world records throughout her career so far. But she didn`t concentrate on winning awards or being famous. “I really just love swimming. It`s important for any athlete to remember just why you started,” she said.
As one of the most decorated athletes in history, Long`s goal is to just keep competing as long as her body allows. “Dream big,” she said. “There are so many possibilities out there, so find your passion, be consistent and work hard. You define your own success.”
24. How old was Long when she found her life sport

B. A happy girl and her confusing childhood.
C. An amazing illness and its terrible influence.
D. An inspiring story about an unlucky person.
27. Which of the following may Long most agree with

Rich countries have almost completely wiped out infectious diseases such as cholera and malaria. Instead, their health ministries spend much of their time worrying about illnesses caused by wealth. Cheap, oil food has ended starvation in the rich world, but it also encourages diabetes(糖尿病).
Even education is not always pure good. Over the past few decades, East Asia has seen a surprising rise in the rate of short-sightedness. And a growing pile of evidence suggests that the main reason for this is education—specifically, the fact that children spend large parts of the day in dark classrooms.
Before the long economic growth that began in the 1960s, myopia(近视)was uncommon in East Asia. These days, among the young, it is almost common. In Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei more than 80% of school-leavers are short-sighted. In Seoul over 90% young men are.
If East Asia is the center of the epidemic, the West is not immune. Studies suggest rates of between 20% and 40% in Europe, higher than the natural state of affairs. One study in California found a rate of 59% among 17-to-19-year-olds.
Glasses and contact lenses(隐形眼镜)are expensive. In parts of rural areas where myopia is almost ubiquitous, some families cannot afford either and their children struggle in schools. And severe myopia predisposes(诱发)those who suffer it to other eye diseases in middle age, some of which can cause untreatable loss of vision.
The evidence suggests that regular exposure to bright daylight is important in properly controlling the growth of children`s eyes. Too little light leads to short-sighted eyes. Researchers think that this explains why rates are so high in Asia, where a strong cultural stress on the value of education leads to long school days and, often, private tutoring in the afternoon and evening.
Governments are well placed to solve the problems, while reassuring anxious parents that a bit less classroom time is unlikely to be catastrophic. After all, countries such as Finland and Sweden do well in global education rankings with a less intense approach to education. Giving more outdoor time to young children would still leave room for them to prepare for exams in their teenage years.
28. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. Diabetes will be wiped out in the near future.
B. Cholera and malaria are easy to treat.
C. Wealth is a double-edged sword.
D. Health ministries play a vital role in ensuring food safety.
29. How does the author prove his argument in Paragraph 3
A. By listing figures. B. By making a comment.
C. By explaining the reasons. D. By clarifying a concept.
30. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Rather rare. B. Very common.
C. Well known. D. Extremely popular.
31. What`s the author`s advice to fight myopia
A. Help students make full preparations for their exams.
B. Copy the practices of Finland and Sweden.
C. Pay little attention to education.
D. Send children outside more.
D
The rise of the internet and social media has greatly expanded our access to information—and that includes false or misleading information. Thus, it`s vital to teach our children media literacy—the ability to critically evaluate information online.
A 2016 Stanford University study, for example, showed that high school students had a hard time distinguishing between sponsored content and news articles or determining the potential prejudice of social media messages. A more recent MIT study on the spread of false information on Twitter found that fake news stories were 70 percent more likely to be retweeted(推特转发)than true news stories.
“We`re in the most profound information revolution in 500 years,” says Howard Schneider, the executive director of Stony Brook University`s Center for News Literacy. “Our children are not prepared for the change. My metaphor is that we need to inject every student with an initial dose of news literacy before they leave middle school. We need to build their immunities(免疫)against this flood of false information and then continue to strengthen these lessons in high school.”
Rachel Kelsh, a social studies teacher from Hampton Bays High School on Long Island, is one of the teachers piloting Stony Brook`s program. Every week her students learn to examine current events using different news sources. She uses this time to explain why some stories are reliable and others aren`t, and to teach how some people carefully choose their news only from sources that share their political bent. She also explains how social media algorithms(算法)work—for example, how liking something on TikTok means you`ll be shown more of that type of content. And she insists that parents should also do their part in their children`s media literacy.
Media literacy is a key 21st century skill and its importance will only increase. Learning how to evaluate media is an increasingly important skill for our children.
32. What did the author hope to show by citing the two university studies
A. The influence of fake news. B. The misjudgment of students.
C. The wide access to online news. D. The urgency of critical thinking.
33. What does the metaphor of “to inject our child with an initial dose of news literacy” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. To teach our child media literacy at a young age.
B. To stop our child receiving false information.
C. To keep our child immune against online news.
D. To protect our child against addiction to online news.
34. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How people work together to help children.
B. How students fight with online fake news.
C. How Stony Brook`s program is running.
D. How social media work on children.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Most Needed Skill in the 21st Century
B. Media Literacy, a Must for Our Children
C. Be Careful with News Stories Online
D. The Importance of Media Literacy

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You
We all grew up hearing people tell us to “go out and get some fresh air.” 36 According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your camping area is good.
37 If the air you're breathing is clean—which it would be if you're away from the smog of cities—then the air is filled with life-giving, energizing oxygen. If you exercise out of doors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles and your brain.
Recently, people have begun studying the connection between the natural world and healing. 38 In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery. It turns out that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood. Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see tree branches out their window are likely to recover at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. 39 It gives us a great feeling of peace.
40 While the sun's rays can age and harm our skin, they also give us beneficial Vitamin D. To make sure you get enough Vitamin D—but still protect your skin—put on sunscreen right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that's plenty of time for your skin to absorb a day's worth of Vitamin D.
A. Fresh air cleans our lungs.
B. So what are you waiting for
C. Being in nature refreshes us.
D. Another side benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.
E. But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said
F. Just as importantly, we tend to associate fresh air with health care.
G. All across the country, recovery centers have begun building Healing Gardens.

Jatin and his younger sister, Neha, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks(盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha`s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn`t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin`s running shoes. Neha`s school hours were in the morning , so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞)with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

Paragraph 1:
Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this crucial point, Jatin clenched his teeth, jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. Finally, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Jatin couldn`t help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule and Jatin won the third prize. Jatin felt overjoyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Jatin found Neha was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Neha, see what I have got for you.” Jatin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Neha saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Jatin. “Thank you! Jatin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.

由文章第一段“Rich countries have almost completely wiped out infectious diseases such as cholera and malaria. Instead, their health ministries spend much of their time worrying about illnesses caused by wealth. Cheap, oil food has ended starvation in the rich world, but it also encourages diabetes . (富裕国家几乎完全消灭了霍乱和疟疾等传染病。相反, 他们的卫生部花了大量时间担心财富导致的疾病。廉价的油腻食品结束了发达国家的饥饿, 但也助长了糖尿病)”可知, 富裕国家几乎完全消灭了霍乱和疟疾等传染病, 但是富裕也带来了其他一些疾病和问题。由此可推知, 富裕是一把双刃剑, 故选C项。
29. 【答案】A
由文章第三段“Before the long economic growth that began in the 1960s, myopia(近视)was uncommon in East Asia. These days, among the young, it is almost common. In Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei more than 80% of school-leavers are short-sighted. In Seoul over 90% young men are. (在20世纪60年代开始的长期经济增长之前, 近视在东亚并不常见。如今, 在年轻人中, 这种情况几乎很常见。在香港、新加坡和台北, 超过 80%的离校生患有近视。在首尔, 超过 90%的年轻男性是男性)”可知, 第三段作者是通过列数字的方式来证明自己的观点的, 故选A项。
30. 【答案】B
【解析】 词义猜测题。根据第五段“some families cannot afford either and their children struggle in schools. (一些家庭负担不起, 他们的孩子在学校里挣扎)”以及前一段的数据可以推知, 在一些农村地区, 近视率非常高并是“普遍存在的”, 故选B项。
31. 【答案】D
【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段“Giving more outdoor time to young children would still leave room for them to prepare for exams in their teenage years.
根据第二段“A 2016 Stanford University study, for example, showed that high school students had a hard time distinguishing between sponsored content and news articles or determining the potential prejudice of social media messages.
33. 【答案】A
根据第三段“Our children are not prepared for the change. My metaphor is that we need to inject every student with an initial dose of news literacy before they leave middle school. We need to build their immunities against this flood of false information and then continue to strengthen these lessons in high school.”(我们的孩子还没有为这种变化做好准备。
根据第四段第一句“Rachel Kelsh, a social studies teacher from Hampton Bays High School on Long Island, is one of the teachers piloting Stony Brook`s program.”(Rachel Kelsh 是长岛汉普顿湾高中的一名社会研究教师, 也是Stony Brook 项目的试点教师之一)以及下文介绍的“Rachel Kelsh 如何培养学生媒体素养”可知, 第四段主要介绍 Stony Brook 的项目是如何运行的, 故选C项。

Thus, it`s vital to teach our children media literacy—the ability to critically evaluate information online.”(互联网和社交媒体的兴起极大地扩大了我们获取信息的渠道, 其中包括虚假或误导性信息。因此, 教育我们的孩子媒体素养是至关重要的——批判性地评估网上信息的能力)以及最后一段“Media literacy is a key 21st century skill and its importance will only increase. Learning how to evaluate media is an increasingly important skill for our children.”(媒体素养是21世纪的一项关键技能, 其重要性只会增加。
设空处前句提到“go out and get some fresh air”, 空格处马上针对呼吸新鲜空气这件事情进行提问, 然后设空处后一句就是针对提问的回答“the answer is a big YES”, 所以选择E项。
此外, G 项中出现 Healing Gardens, 后一句马上出现 In these places 来指代 Healing Gardens, 因此答案是G项。
In these places patients can go to be near nature during their recovery.
Another side benefit of getting fresh air
