Aesha Ash is a ballet dancer who began The Swan Dreams Project in 2011. It is a program designed to bring ballet to girls of color in her community. Aesha Ash is one of the few women of color to ever grace the stages of the School of American Ballet in New York City. She wants to expose her community to more positive images of women of color through the use of ballet. She wants to show the world that beauty and grace are not defined by status or race.
Aesha grew up in the inner city of Rochester, New York, where crime, gun violence and poverty were among the biggest threats to the community. For her, that’s normal. That’s just life in the neighborhood, but what she remembers most is the dance studio. She started dancing at the age of five. A teacher mentioned to her mother that she had some promise in ballet, and that it would be difficult for her, as a woman of color, to enter the ballet world. But the hardship she faced was the very thing that pushed her to pursue a career in ballet.
And there’s so much negative stereotypes (刻板印象) and misunderstanding of who they are in the media. Through the use of imagery and her career as a ballet dancer, she challenges stereotypes that exist for women of color, particularly those from inner-city communities.
“It’s important that our girls see that side of themselves because for many kids it’s hard to be what you can’t see. I hadn’t seen a black ballet dancer before I decided that was what I wanted to be. It was really important for me to be in my environment displaying that because this is where I’m from. It was always beyond ballet,” Aesha Ash stated.
24. Why did Aesha start The Swan Dreams Project
A. To promote the images of females of color by ballet.
B. To expose her community to a world of women of color.
C. To grace the stages of the School of American Ballet.
D. To show the world that beauty and grace are defined by status.
25. Which of the following best describes the community she grew up in
A. Comfortable. B. Ancient. C. Peaceful. D. Unsafe.
26. What can’t we know from the passage
A. Aesha had a gift for ballet according to her teacher.
B. The hardship Aesha faced was the color of her skin.
C. Aesha wanted to be a ballet dancer because of a woman dancer of color.
D. It is not easy to change the stereotypes that exist for women of color.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. A teacher provides chances for girls of color.
B. A woman brings ballet to the girls of color.
C. Ballet changes the life of a woman of color.
D. A woman has changed the negative stereotypes.

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to the idea that they have a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a ‘sixth sense’. They know when things are happening,” H.D. Ratnayake, director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife. Department, said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence (证据) about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved.” said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behavior specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. “There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he said. Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.
“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain signs, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators (掠食动物). The idea of an animal “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add to.
28. What happened after the Indian Ocean tsunami
A. Many people died but wild animals survived.
B. The “six sense” of wild animals developed.
C. Wild beasts were killed or went missing.
D. The coast was found in good condition.
29. What does H.D. Ratnayake do
A. He is a zoo keeper. B. He is a wildlife official.
C. He is a movie director. D. He is an animal behavior expert.
30. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “detecting” in paragraph 5
A. Taking up. B. Putting up. C. Picking up. D. Bringing up.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Animals can save themselves from human activity.
B. Animals’ natural power to escape from danger.
C. How to protect wildlife when disasters happen.
D. The serious damage of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources. Millions of waterfowl (水禽) were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat.
In 1934, with the passage of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act), an increasingly concerned nation took firm action to stop the destruction of migratory (迁徙的) waterfowl and the wetlands so vital to their survival. Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by J.N. “Ding” Darling, a political cartoonist from Des Moines, Iowa, who at that time was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey. Hunters willingly pay the stamp price to ensure the survival of our natural resources.
About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat. Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated.
32. What was a cause of the waterfowl population decline in North America
A. Loss of wetlands. B. Popularity of water sports.
C. Pollution of rivers. D. Arrival of other wild animals.
33. What does the underlined word “decimate” mean in the first paragraph
A. Acquire. B. Export. C. Destroy. D. Distribute.
34. What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934
A. The stamp price has gone down. B. The migratory birds have flown away.
C. The hunters have stopped hunting. D. The government has collected money.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. The Federal Duck Stamp Story B. The National Wildlife Refuge System
C. The Benefits of Saving Waterfowl D. The History of Migratory Bird Hunting

As Mom and I stood in line waiting to cash out at the store, I studied the customer in front of us who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe early twenties, but she already had a tired look with a slight stoop (驼背).
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat and meal like pasta, rice, and potatoes. Day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases, well, almost. In the corner sat a toy car and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off. She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She turned around and asked Mom for help.
“I’m sorry to bother you,” she began shyly. “But can you tell me how much this is I forgot my glasses at home.”
“Of course,” Mom said.
When Mom finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back.
“They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they ” Mom said in a low voice.
“Next!” The cashier called and she moved forward.
When the store employee finally added up everything and told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. It was obvious that she didn’t have enough money, and she scanned her items to see what she could do without.
One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to take much-needed goods out while the cashier patiently deducted (扣除) things with a pleasant smile.
The child’s items remained in the cart, however. In fact, the palm of her other hand lay protectively across them, as if she didn’t want to give in.
The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them.
When our turn came, Mom pointed to the pile of items the woman had taken out, added all our meat and fresh milk, and whispered “Separate bags, same bill please” to the cashier. She nodded, even though it was a “pack your own” kind of store.

【原文】W: Hi, there. My name’s Wendy, and I’d like to tell you about a fantastic trip to New Zealand. New Zealand has two main islands—the North Island and the South Island. I went to the South Island. There are many ways to see it—you can hire a car to drive, or go around by motorbike. You can even see the island by boat, but I went on what’s known as the green bus. We started in Nelson, which is in the northwest of the island. Then we headed off down the west coast, stopping at different places and up to our final destination—Christchurch, the second largest city in New Zealand, lying on the east coast. I also went on a day tour to a place called Kaikoura, which is 150 kilometers north of Christchurch. It is famous for its sea life and also for being one of the most exciting places in the world to see ocean birds. I was eager to see my favorite animal—dolphins, and there were whales too. There’re interesting things to buy in the South Island. Nelson Saturday Market is brilliant. There’re all sorts of goods in the market. I got a fantastic wooden mask as a souvenir, bur there were also paintings, jewellery and other things that would have been nice to bring home.

参考范文:
The cashier went on with her work and Mom moved next to the woman. She was wondering how to put the extra things into the woman’s cart she’d brought without being noticed. My mom looked up at the cashier and the clever cashier immediately nodded knowingly, winking at my mom and solving the problem by “accidentally” dropping several oranges which flew past the lady. “I’ll get those,” the woman offered kindly to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly finished our plan as she turned around and bent to pick up the oranges.
When she turned back and was about to leave, she found the extra bag in her cart. She looked at my mom in surprise. “How can I accept this ” she said, handing it to my mother. “It’s nothing. That’s what all of us should do,” my mom replied warmly and firmly. Seeing all this, people around her began to persuade her to take back these items. Finally, with everyone’s help, she took the bag in tears. It was at that moment that I realized we make a living by getting, but we make a life by giving.
