Knowledge goal
1. Enable students to translate the sentences from the Confucian Analects and some idioms .
2.Enable students to introduce Confucius in English.
Ability goal
1. Help students enhance their listening ability and cross-culture awareness.
2. Equip students with the ability to write a composition introducing a person.
Emotional goal
1. Let students realize the significant role Confucius and Confucianism played in the Chinese culture and history.
2.Help students develop a sense of national pride and encourage students to spread and share Splendid Chinese culture and civilization to the whole world.
Teaching steps:
Lead-in:
Show students three pictures and ask them to describe them. They are Confucius Temple, Kong Family Mansion and Cemetery of Confucius. Confucius Temple The most famous and largest temple honoring the great sage(圣贤),it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It covers 16,000 square metres and has 460 rooms. The main part consists of nine courtyards with several gates. Dacheng Hall stands at the centre and is the principal place for offering sacrifices to Confucius(祭孔).
Kong Family Mansion
Located to the east of the Temple of Confucius,this was the historical home of the descendants of Confucius from where they managed sites and ceremonies in Qufu. Today it is a museum. Cemetery of Confucius
This is where Confucius and his descendants are buried. There are more than 10,000 of them,buried here over 2,000 years. The cemetery has had many renovations and extensions in its history.
Purpose: 激活学生的背景知识,激发学生的学习兴趣和好奇心。
Step 1: About Confucius
What do you know about Confucius his titles
And then share a video about Confucius with students to arouse their interest and ask hem to finish the gap-filling task according to the video, which can exercise their memory and listening skills.
Purpose: 启发学生思考并踊跃积极回答,提高课堂参与度。
Step 2 Listening Task
Ask students to listen to the tapes and finish the following chart.
Fact / Opinion about Confucius

Listen again and decide whether these statements are true(T), false(F) or not mentioned(NM). Then answer the question.1. Confucius said that learning without understanding leads to confusion.
2. Xiao Kong is doing a research project on Confucius philosophy.
3. As one of Confucius’ descendants, Xiao Kong’s name is recorded in the family tree.
4. Dacheng Hall is the tallest building in Qufu. After listening, give students the listening materials for reference and check their answers.
Purpose: 锻炼学生精听文本,提取关键信息的能力。
Step 3: Idioms
Write down the English idioms that are used in the conversation. Explain their meanings and think about some Chinese equivalents

⑧ burn your bridges/boats
To move forward, burn your bridges behind you so you can’t go backward.
Purpose: 拓宽学生视野,了解中西方文化中的习语表达及意义。
Step four: The Analects translation and appreciation
Teach students in accordance of their aptitude.(天资,习性)In teaching there should be no distinction of classes.
Learning without satiety(satisfaction); and instructing others without being wearied. When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teacher.
They who know the truth are not equal to those who love it, and they who love it are not equal to those who delight in it.
When we see men of worth, we should think of equaling them; when we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.
Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous(dangerous).If a man keeps cherishing his old knowledge, so as continually to be acquiring new, he may be a teacher of others.
Purpose: 学生通过翻译《论语》中经典熟悉的语句,加强对孔子及儒家思想的认识,增强学生的民族自豪感和跨文化意识。
Step five: Confucius’s thoughts
Show students a video about Confucius and Ren. After watching, ask students to answer the following three questions.
Q①What words can be used to translate “Ren” in English
A:Benevolence; Goodness; Kindheartedness; Humanity; Love
Q②Where does “Ren” come from
A:It begins with the love to one’s own parents, to one’s own family and eventually they will love their country and even the whole world.
Q③ Is their one single concept that we can take as a guide for all actions in our lives
A: Do not do to others that you would not want done to you.
Step six: Influence(group discussion)Ask students to discuss the influence of Confucius in China and all over the world
Step seven: Confucius(writing)
Give students some useful expressions and write a composition.

Dear Mike,
I am delighted to share some information about Confucius with you. Known as a great thinker, an educator, a philosopher, as well as the founder of Confucianism, Confucius plays an important role in Chinese history. He devoted his whole life to teaching students, quite a few of whom have also become famous scholars, inheriting and even reforming his ideas. His thoughts about “kindness and love” not only have a profound influence on the government at that time but also lay a solid foundation for the Chinese society in modern times. It is he who inspired me to be a kind and well-educated person. Inspired by his ideas, I realized that it is not what property you own but what ability you have that can make a difference to the world.
Purpose: 经过课堂学习,对孔子及儒家文化有更好的了解,生成一篇介绍孔子及其思想的习作,有利于学生写作能力的提升
课后反思
本节课主要通过听力理解、小组合作探究、活动展示等环节展开,基本实现了该节课的教学目标,基本达到了预期效果。课后我进行了深刻反思:
①课堂设计科学合理,各环节自然流畅,课堂效率高。
②课堂气氛活跃,师生交流融洽,体现了以学生为主体的生本课堂理念。
③导入环节中, 视频和图片结合,既激发了学生的兴趣又注重学生基础的构建,注重学生背景知识的创建和唤醒。听力理解难度和语速适合学生基本现状,留给学生的时间稍显不足。
④习语翻译和论语欣赏翻译是本节课最大的亮点,学生积极思考,踊跃发言。
⑤时间稍显紧张,最后的写作没能展开,只能留作课下的任务。学生是课堂的主人,把课堂还给学生,让他们有更多的机会展示自己。
总之,在这节课的设计过程中,我也在不断的反思和调整,磨课需要耐心和毅力,这也是自我提升的一个过程。
