Is there a link between social media and depression Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just-rolled-out-of-bed hair. On the other hand, there are times when you laugh at funny memes (表情包), catch up with old friends, and feel happy to belong to fun social media communities, Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
People are increasingly suspect that there’re the potential problems of social media. Things like cyberbullying, screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying-screen time is horrible for young people.
The study followed over 3800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. One of their main findings was that higher amounts of social media use were associated with higher levels of depression. That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
Case closed Not so fast. Before we end the debate once and for all, let’s take a closer look at this and other studies. Let’s ask ourselves: what exactly is the relationship between social media use and depression It turns out there are several warnings.
24.Why do people sometimes feel bad when looking through Instagram
A.They feel unbalanced. B.They can travel nowhere.
C.They don’t look perfect. D.They lack contact with old friends.
25.Why is the article in journal JAMA mentioned
A.To comment. B.To suggest. C.To prove. D.To explore.
26.Which may agree with the findings of the study
A.Teens’ amount of screen time is limited.
B.Depression is related to social media use.
C.It is not easy to tell reasons for depression.
D.Social media use contributes to mental health.
27.What’s the best title of the text
A.How to reduce depression
B.Shall people reduce screen time
C.Does social media cause depression
D.Why is it time to give up social media
C
Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings The good news is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.
I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金)(our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor)
For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball-simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.
We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.
28.What do the words “more is more” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A.The more, the better. B.Enough is enough.
C.More money, more worries. D.Earn more and spend more.
29.What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects
A.Saving up for her holiday B.Raising money for a poor girl
C.Adding the money to her fund D.Giving the money to a sick mother
30.Why did the author play the ball with Shepherd
A.To try out an idea B.To show a parent’s love
C.To train his attention D.To help him start a hobby
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Take It or Leave It B.A Lesson from Kids
C.Live More with Less D.The Pleasure of Giving
D
According to a recent study,a new genetically modified(转基因的)rice can prevent infections of HIV,the virus responsible for the disease AIDS.
The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins(蛋白质)that attach directly to the HIV virus. This process keeps the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove the effect of the virus and block its spreading.
The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million people were living with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest number of those are in ·developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of the disease.
The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the "groundbreaking" discovery is “realistically the only way" that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low enough for the developing world.
They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine.
The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time. Critics of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.
32.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.The terrible situations of HIV infections.
B.The rapid development of Africa.
C.The practical ways to cure AIDS.
D.The efforts made by the United Nations.
33.In which way will the rice be used at the lowest cost
A.By transforming it into proteins. B.By processing it into a cream.
C.By attaching it to the HIV virus. D.By adding it to an oral drug.
34.What can we infer about the genetic engineering process
A.It can prevent infections of HIV.
B.It has produced dangerous chemicals.
C.It is intended for the developed world.
D.It requires further testing to ensure the safety.
35.From which is the text probably taken
A.A biology textbook. B.A first aid brochure.
C.A social web page. D.A health magazine.
第二节(共 5 小题: 每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。
Home libraries can be a dynamic expression of the owner's personality. Creating a home library is a fun way to display your interests while establishing a special space for reading.
While there's no right or wrong way to design a library, the questions can be puzzling, especially to someone with hundreds or thousands of books. How do I organize 36 We'll discuss how to build a home library that works for you.
What room should I use for my home library 37 While reading in a room with big windows and lots of light is refreshing, storing books in natural light is harmful to them. Basements heavy with humidity(湿气)will cause mold (霉菌) and attract insects. 38
When you started using the public library, you probably learned about Melvil Dewey and his system for ordering libraries. The Dewey Decimal Classification System has ten broad categories for organizing books, including philosophy, religion and the arts. 39 For example, when you want a book on modern art, you head to the 700th block. Larger libraries, such as those at universities, tend to use the Library of Congress Classification System, because it offers a more specific array of subjects for categorization, adding subjects such as medicine and law for a total of 21categories.
40 Your home library may or may not be as large as your local public library, but a good system of organization will still help you find the book you want quickly. You could take a page from Dewey and the Library of Congress and sort books by subject matter. Sections for subjects such as history, technology or fiction might make their retrieval (检索) easier. This system will also allow you to highlight a particular passion, such as an extensive collection of World War II history,
How do I get everything to fit
B. Each category is assigned a number.
C. Almost everybody wants a home library.
D. A good system of organization is the key.
E. In addition, basements are likely to be flooded.
F. Almost any room will do with a few exceptions.
G. The size of a home library depends on how much space you can spare.
第三部分 语言运用(共 15小题:每小题 2 分,满分 30 分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
Since our twins began learning to walk, my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window. The 41 is obvious. If we 42 it is a door, they'll want to go outside constantly. It will drive us crazy. The kids apparently know the 43 . But our insisting it's 44 a window has kept them from 45 millions of requests to open the door.
I hate lying to the kids. One day they'll 46 and discover that everything they've always known about windows is a 47 .
I wonder if 48 should always tell the truth no matter the consequences. I have a very strong 49 that the lie we're telling is doing spiritual damage to our children. Windows and doors have 50 metaphorical(比喻) meanings. I'm telling them they can't open what they absolutely know is a door. What if later in life they come to a metaphorical door, like an opportunity(机会) of some sort, and 51 opening the door and taking the opportunity, they just 52 it and wonder, "What if it isn't a door " That is, "What if it isn't a 53 opportunity "
Maybe it's an unreasonable fear. But the 54 is that I shouldn't lie to my kids. I should just accept repeatedly having to say, "No. We can't go outside now.'' Then when they come to other doors in life, be they real or metaphorical, they won't 55 to open them and walk through.
41.A.relief B.target C.reason D.case
42.A.admit B.believe C.mean D.realize
43.A.result B.danger C.method D.truth
44.A.merely B.slightly C.hardly D.partly
45.A.reviewing B.approving C.receiving D.attempting
46.A.win out B.give up C.wake up D.stand out
47.A.dream B.lie C.fantasy D.fact
48.A.parents B.twins C.colleagues D.teachers
49.A.demand B.fear C.desire D.doubt
50.A.traditional B.important C.double D.original
51.A.by comparison withB.in addition to C.regardless of D.instead of
52.A.get hold of B.stare at C.knock on D.make use of
53.A.real B.typical C.similar D.limited

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy ---his name was Bernard---had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

根据文章第一段的第三句the good news is that I can …可以推断出,前后语义相反,后句中是live more with less,所以前句应该是“越多越好”的意思。

书面表达
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.
