Passage 1(2023湘潭改编)
When autumn arrives in the United States and Canada, you can see one of nature's greatest scenes—the yearly migration(迁徙) of the monarch butterflies(帝王蝶).
No other butterfly in the world migrates like the orange and black monarch(帝王) of North America. They can not live for long periods in cold weather. So each a__18__around October, the butterflies travel up to 3,000 kilometers south to spend winter. Some even fly to the mountains of Mexico.
It usually takes the butterflies two m__19__ to reach Mexico. When it is warm, they start to head back north in the s__20__. But not one butterfly finishes the whole trip. They lay eggs along the w__21__and die. It might take the monarchs as many as four to five generations(代) to complete the j__22__ all the way back up to Canada, says Sarina Jepsen, who directs the endangered species program(濒危物种计划) for the Xerces Society.
The most amazing thing about these butterflies is that they return to the very same trees in Mexico that their great great grandparents used the winter before.
However, the n__23__of these colorful butterflies has dropped in recent years. The US Fish and Wildlife Service said that nearly a billion monarchs have disappeared from overwintering sites(越冬地点) since 1990, the Washington Post reported. One of the main r__24__, researchers say, is that farmers have used herbicides(除草剂) on the milkweed(马利筋) plants that these butterflies feed on.
Passage 2(2023重庆B卷改编)
A new contact lens(隐形镜片) has been developed by scientists from America, Britain and China. It can check for illness at any time by examining chemicals in tears. A new sensor (感应器) is used to achieve the p__25__.
S__26__ hope that the improvement could help to deal with sudden medical events(事件). Dr Zhao Yunlong said, “COVID 19 has had a great i__27__on the scientific world. And we are doing r__28__to help people deal with similar events in the future.”
When introducing the new contact lens, Dr Guo Shiqi, a researcher at Harvard, said, “In the past, the sensor was put between the layers (层) of the lens. It didn't have direct contact (接触) with tears. But our new sensor is smaller and smarter. It can be fixed to a lens and keep direct contact with tears. What's more, it causes no discomfort to the eye.”
The contact lens has not been put to the market, but researchers are quite sure that it will be welcomed. It is especially useful for the old and those who may experience sudden medical events.
As society develops, scientists are supposed to develop more p__29__ that provide care and convenience(便利) for people. The contact lens is one of what they are researching on. Earlier, a California company developed another k__30__of contact lens using LED technology. It can show the health information on the mobile p__31__. Steve Sinclair, head of the company, said, “We have to build something that helps you when you need it and stays off when you don't need it.”

On visits to s__37__, Danay turns the book giveaway into a party. Would you be worried if your classmates told you that he was a stamp collector Would you call a doctor or call the police Actually, there is no reason to be worried. A stamp collector is just a p__39__who collects stamps!
Stamp collecting has been around for well over 150 years. People began collecting stamps soon after stamps with glue on the back were introduced in London in 1840. Today, according to Boys' Life magazine, stamp collecting is one of the most popular h__40__in the world.
Some people collect stamps just for f__41__. These people may just want to collect stamps with animals or famous people on them. First, how many of the particular s__43__ is made Next, how popular is the stamp Finally, what is the condition of the stamp If a stamp has a low print run(单次印数), a popular picture, and is in excellent condition, this stamp may be worth a lot of m__44__. In 1980, a one cent British Guinea stamp issued in 1856 went for$935,000!
Passage 5
Social media (社交媒体) is certainly an interesting place to learn others' opinions. You can read everything from strange ideas to true facts and everything in between. But when you're spending t__45__online and reading so many opinions, it's quite possible that you'll sometimes see someone write something that you strongly disagree with.
In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this p__46__ at once. You might do some research, find some f__47__ of your own and reply to what they've written. You finish writing out your r__48__, click (点击)“Post” and win the argument!
Except that it's not really much of a victory. Most people don't like it when other people disagree with their i__49__, especially online strangers. It's unlikely that they will change their o__50__ just because you argued with them. In fact, it's possible that you made them feel more confident that they're correct.
And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of f__51__ online, it slowly influences you. You might not know it at first, but the argument that you take part in can actually have a bad effect on your mood. If you argue often, you start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It's a dangerous cycle (循环).
I guess the best thing to do is to tell yourself that most arguments aren't worth it. There are much better and more interesting things to do, whether online or in real l__52__.
