The dragon is a great animal in Chinese culture. It brings wind and rain. It is said that every year on the second day of the second lunar(阴历的)month, the dragon wakes up from its winter sleep and raises its head. Because of this, the day is called “Dragon Head-Raising Day” ( Longtaitou). In 2024, it fell on March 11.
Old people see it as the start of spring and farming, because they believe that after Longtaitou, there will be more rain. And rain is of great importance to farming.
Today, many customs have faded away(消退). But one that has remained popular is to have a haircut. Some people believe that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to their uncles, mainly their mothers’ brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head-Raising Day.
Also, it is traditional for people to eat some food on that day. The food is usually named after dragons. Noodles are called dragons’ beard (longxu). Dumplings are dragons’ ears (longer). And spring rolls are dragons’ scales (longlin).

Learn the secrets behind making amazing ice sculptures(雕塑)
On Dec. 7, 2023, Harbin had an ice-collecting festival. People got together on the Songhua River and picked up the first ice cubes(冰块)of the year. They cut the ice into big cubes 40 to 50 cm thick. The festival is a symbol of the city’s ice and snow season.
Ice cubes from the Songhua River are clear. Later, sculptors will turn the ice cubes into many amazing ice sculptures.
“Ice is the body of a sculpture, and light is its soul(灵魂),” said Su Shi, an ice sculptor in Harbin.
Tools are important for making an ice sculpture. Chainsaws(链锯)and die grinders(电磨)are often used. They are used to make holes and carve small corners.
Irons(熨斗)are also very useful. After sculptors make small parts like a rabbit's ear, they use irons to melt the bottom of the ear a little. So, the ear can stick onto the head.
You can find some amazing ice sculptures at Harbin Ice and Snow World. Also, the ice slide and the Ferris wheel there will make your day. Winter can be hard for some people. But these sculptures brighten the long cold months.
