Since ancient times, Chinese people have been making and drinking tea. On Nov. 29, 2022, things related to tea were added to the UNESCO’s ICH(非物质文化遗产)list. These things include knowledge, skills and social practices(习俗)on how to plant tea plants, pick tea leaves, make tea by hand, and drink and share tea.
The traditional technology is mainly found in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian and Hunan. However, the social practices of tea spread around the country.
There are a number of social practices. For example, the host should welcome guests with boiled tea. Boiling tea started in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Tea leaves were boiled for a long time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of fruits. Later, in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a faster way nearly took its place— steeping(冲泡).
However, now the old way enjoys its popularity again among young Chinese people. They like to sit around a stove(炉子)as they boil tea on it. Then they enjoy the snacks and hot tea. In this way, people can feel more relaxed. As one post on Xiaohongshu says, “It is relaxing to drink hot tea, feel the light wind, and chat with best friends.”
