Welcome to Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh — a vibrant arts venue with a seasonal programme of live storytelling, theatre, music, exhibitions, workshops, family events and festivals.
The Centre’s idea is summed up nicely by the old Scottish saying, “The story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart”. The main draw is its programme of spoken-word performances, most of which take place in its 100-seat basement theatre. The storytelling doesn’t just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large, airy room used for exhibitions, workshops as well as a monthly story session for tots(Tiny Tales for one-to three-year-olds).
Exit through the gift shop
No gift shop! Better than that, the Centre has an independent bookshop, which specializes in fables, myths and folk stories. Many are classics passed down from generation to generation, although contemporary (当代的) material also exists in abundance. Kids’ books are plentiful. Contemporary highlights include LariDon’s Serpents and Werewolves and Janis Mackay’s The Selki e Girl. Also worth a look is Animals, Beasties and Monsters of Scotland by Lea Taylor, which forms part of The History Press’s superb compilation of regional Scottish folk stories.
Getting there
The Centre is in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town, at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. It’s a five-minute walk from Waverley railway station. Driving in the city centre is to be avoided; the nearest bus stops are on the High Street and North Bridge. For more information, visit Lothian Buses.
Value for money
Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free although all the theatre performances are ticketed. Prices for shows vary, with the average around 8 for adults and 6 for children. Café Voices, the Centre’s monthly storytelling night, is 5.
Opening hours
10 a. m.-6 p. m. from Mondays to Saturdays; Sunday (July and August only). Last entry: 5:30 pm.
1. What can visitors do at the Centre
A. Attend a weekly story session. B. Enjoy spoken-word performances.
C. Buy some souvenirs. D. Watch free shows.
2. What can be learned about transportation to the Centre
A. Public transportation is recommended.
B. Self-driving is encouraged in the city centre.
C. Round-trip transportation is provided by the Centre.

A small new NASA instrument may be able to help predict volcanic eruptions and monitor air quality.
Nicknamed NACHOS, which is short for the Nanosat Atmospheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observation System, was launched from Virginia on Feb. 19 aboard a NG resupply mission to the International Space Station. NACHOS will soon then be placed aboard a tiny CubeSat satellite positioned about 480 km above Earth, where NASA hopes it will be able to detect gases like SO2 and NO2 in the atmosphere.
“A volcano just waking up may emit SO2 before there is any detectable seismic (地震的) activity,” LosAlamos National Laboratory remote sensing researcher Steve Love explained in a news release. “That gives us a chance to identify a potentially erupting volcano before it actually blows.”
If successful, NACHOS will be the smallest and highest-resolution (最高分辨率) instrument of its kind in orbit. NASA says that could lead to new space-based systems that are able to monitor air quality for harmful gases in neighborhoods and individual power plants. “When we recognize that these gases are present and can find out their sources, we have the opportunity to take action and minimize negative health outcomes,” said Love, who is a task leader on the NACHOS project.
In the past, NASA has created satellites to observe these kinds of gases. But Love said those satellites traditionally required high-resolution images and sensitive instruments that were costly to produce and operate. Smaller devices, like NACHOS, could enable a wider use of the technology at a much lower cost. If it proves successful, the technology could also be used in Earth-based systems, NASA says. Love and his team expect NACHOS to orbit our planet for about a year. “That will give us enough time to test our instrument design and gather enough test data to ensure our technology concept is reasonable,” Love said. “More power and less weight set NACHOS apart and make it an excellent candidate for future atmospheric trace gas missions.”
3. Why was the instrument NACHOS launched
A. To improve air quality. B. To help predict the volcano eruptions.
C. To control the emission of SO2 and NO2. D. To resupply the International Space Station.
4. What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The launch of NACHOS. B. The remote sensing research.
C. The detectable seismic activity. D. The SO2 emissions of volcanoes.
5. Which of the following might Love agree with about NACHOS
A. It is high costly. B. It needs more power.
C. It is a promising instrument. D. Its technology has proved successful.

About five weeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard was growing dusty. Later, our lizard emerged (出现) from its tank with its old skin flowing behind it. I didn’t think about it much until a morning last week when I knocked my favorite teapot off the table. It burst into hundreds of pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wondered why we had been breaking so many things over the months.
The destruction started three months ago. It was my husband’s birthday. He had just lost his job. The uncertainty was starting to wear on us, so I wanted to do something special.
“Let’s make a cake for Dad!” I cried. My kids screamed with joy. We baked, iced and sprinkled for most of the day. Candles on the cake! Balloons on the walls! Flowers on the table!
Two hours before my husband came back home from another job interview, my daughter climbed up to grab a glass vase from a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces of glass were everywhere. She sobbed loudly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding for his birthday.
Three days ago, the light in our living room suddenly went out. After several frustrating hours of unsuccessful attempts to fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jordan documentary series The Last Dance.
The poignancy (酸楚) of Jordan retiring from his beloved basketball to play baseball and what had pushed him to make such a tough decision took me by surprise. As I watched him take off his basketball uniform and replace it with a baseball uniform, I saw him leaving behind the layer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had. Neither of them chose the moment that had transformed them. But they had to live with who they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have to learn to leave the past behind.
Humans do not shed skin (蜕皮) as easily as other animals. The beginning of change is upsetting. The process is tiring. Damage changes us before we are ready. I see our lizard, raw and nearly new.
Jordan said that no matter how it ends, it starts with hope. With our tender, hopeful skin, that is where we begin.
6. Why did the author’s husband have banana pudding for his birthday
A. The birthday cake was ruined. B. The author made good puddings.
C. Pudding was his favorite dessert. D. They couldn’t afford a birthday cake.
7. Why does the author mention The Last Dance in the passage
A. To prove a theory. B. To define a concept.
C. To develop the theme. D. To provide the background.
8. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. Treasure Past Experiences. B. Move on Whatever Happens.
C. Love Helps Us through Hardships. D. Breaking Things Makes No Difference.

I recently gave a talk about zero waste living to university students. During the Q&A afterward, the unavoidable question of cost came up. One student pointed out that he “can’t afford to buy $30 toothpaste.” While the $30 price may be a bit generous, the student did raise a good point that buying zero-waste products is often more expensive than the overly-packaged traditional ones.
I tried to handle the question as best I could in the moment, but I kept thinking about it afterward. I’m writing about it because I’m sure many others have similar doubts about their own abilities to reduce waste without breaking the bank.
First once you begin to explore the zero waste world, you quickly realize how pointless many products in your life are. You start using fewer, buying less, and using them interchangeably. Soon you’ll find yourself spending less money overall, which balances the higher cost of the zero waste ones. The total number of products in my bathroom decreased by 50% when I became more focused on waste reduction.
Second, if you stop to examine those zero-waste products, you’ll see that they are usually of better quality. Companies usually redesign their packaging to be reusable, upgrading them to be healthier, safer, and greener. So you’re paying extra money not just for non-disposable (非一次性的) packaging, but also for a better product that does less harm.
In my experience, higher-quality skincare products last longer than cheap ones. My personal habits have developed gradually, too. Knowing an item costs more leads me to use it in small quantities and use it to the very end. Moreover, I sometimes even make my own. The price-per-unit is cheap.
To quote Lindsey Miles, a zero waste blogger, “Zero waste is not about what we can afford to buy. It is about what we choose not to buy.” To that student who got me thinking about this, I’d recommend starting with what matters to you. Over time you will figure out where you get the most value for your money. In return, you’ll gain a sense of liberation from the consumer culture, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment.
9. What can we benefit from zero waste products
A. Saving money regularly. B. Balancing the higher cost.
C. Living a convenient life. D. Spending money more wisely.
10. What kind of products would the author like to recommend
A. Zero-cost. B. Top-grade. C. Non-breakable. D. Well-packed.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To teach a life lesson. B. To introduce a social issue.
C. To promote a new product. D. To encourage a lifestyle.

Hartley got to Central Station nearly an hour before his train was due to leave. A lifetime in the theatre had given him a healthy sense of punctuality (守时); a lifetime of unwanted cups of coffee, constant checking of the time, yet another turn around the block before that all too often pointless, tiresome audition (试镜).
Hartley was 75— pretty fit for his age, legs holding up, memory still ticking over nicely — though the occasions for punctuality were now rather fewer. But he was a creature of habit and couldn’t change now.
He went to the restaurant, and then bought a coffee and a blueberry muffin, tired and failed to find a litter-free table. The coffee was awful, the muffin was stale — but the coffee was always awful, the muffin always stale. Hartley refused to let himself be annoyed. His visit to the city had not been without its pleasures. Lunch with an old friend, then a film—regrettably not using his own talents —had rounded out a pleasant day.
Hartley was a good actor, although the calls on his talents were now infrequent. But really, he thought draining (饮尽) his awful coffee, he’d had a reasonably good career. Something to be proud of. But he’d never had that break-through part.
He headed for his platform. Just as the train was about to pull out a man ran down the platform, jumped aboard as the door slammed shut and sank into the seat next to Hartley.
“Cutting it a bit fine”, he said.
“Indeed”, Hartley replied. “A close run thing”.
The man —fortyish, amiable looking — gave him an amused glance.
This brief exchange served as an ice-breaker and they chatted their way through the outer suburbs and into the countryside. His neighbour asked Hartley what he did — or had done — for a living.
Hartley hated telling people he was an actor. He was not ashamed of his job. Not at all, but he had long tired of reactions ranging from “what have I seen you in” to “how do you learn all those lines”.
So in situations like this he simply picked a job from a former role. Bit risky, of course. You say you’re a doctor and find yourself meeting the quizzical (疑问的) gaze of a heart surgeon. But he’d never been caught out and it was harmless enough game, Hartley felt. It amused him, and he’d given some damn good performances too.
“I’m a lawyer”, he replied. “Retired several years ago. Property law. Bit of criminal stuff”.
The train was slowing down. The man glanced out of the window.
“My station. I had you quite wrong then”.
He stood and took down his briefcase from the overhead rack.
“Yes, I’d have said you were an actor. The voice especially. Still, lawyers are actors in a way, don’t you think Plenty of drama in a courtroom.”
The train drew into the station.
“I’m a film director. Choosing a leading actor at the moment. You study faces. On the train. Everywhere. Always on the lookout. Anyway, enjoyed our chat. Bye.”
12. What can we learn about Hartley
A. He is quite forgetful. B. He lacks a sense of time.
C. He has less job opportunities now. D. He’s achieved great success in his acting career.
13. What did Hartley think of not telling his job
A. Amusing despite the risk. B. Upsetting when caught out.
C. Harmful to his acting career. D. Helpful to protect his identity.
14. What can we learn about Harley’s travel companion from the underlined sentence
A. He thought Hartley did a different job.
B. He mistook Hartley for another person.
C. He understood Hartley’s profession was acting.
D. He assumed Hartley had given another answer.
15. The use of the word “Bye” at the end of the story, ______.
A. describes Hartley’s shock to find the man is a director
B. shows the readers how unexpectedly Harley’s career ends
C. confirms Hartley’s lack of luck in spite of his acting skills
D. proves the man will reconsider giving Hartley a chance to act

Value for money
Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free, although all the theatre performances are ticketed.

【答案】3. B 4. D 5. C

As I watched him take off his basketball uniform and replace it with a baseball uniform I saw him leaving behind the layer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had.

First, once you begin to explore the zero waste world, you quickly realize how pointless many products in your life are.
【答案】9. D 10. B 11. D
