Sean Elliot Martin and Pancho Timmons are friends on a mission to change the world, one small act of kindness at a time. That’s the subject of their new book, Quick and Easy World Change, which they released as an e-book.
The project is inspired by another kindness-related book Martin worked on years ago. The latest one takes parts of the first book and updates it with more inspiring stories and lists of little things people can do daily to spread goodness wherever they go. “Make a game of giving—you can assign yourself points for different little things,” Martin said. “How many doors can I open each day for someone with their hands full Or how many different ways can I help someone today Or how many good deeds can I think of ” It also addresses the concept of compound kindness—a domino effect of good deeds. “If you compliment one person, they’re likely to compliment two to five people,” Martin said.
Both authors’ lives have been impacted by the kindness of others, they each explained. Quick and Easy World Change is their way to pay those experiences and sentiments forward. For Timmons, a teacher’s compassion in college was a turning point for him. “I did all the things I was supposed to do—worked hard, studied hard—and ended up failing pretty miserably,” he recalled. “But the professor pulled me aside and said, ‘You’re an A student turning in C and D work because you’re clearly dyslexic (读写困难) and not getting the help you need.” “That 5-minute conversation was the difference between dropping out of college and getting two master’s degrees and now running two companies,” Timmons said. “I’ve spent my career trying to pay that forward.”
With the electronic version available, their plan is to follow up with hard copies. The authors hope people will use it like a workbook, a living document they can mark up, reflect on and use to make their lives—and the lives of others—better.
4. What is the book Quick and Easy World Change about
A. Positive effects of kindness. B. Dreams realized by the authors.
C. Ways to feel good every day. D. Random acts of kindness.
5. What does “the concept of compound kindness” mean
A. Being kind is a life-long mission.
B. Helping others will make your day.
C. It is easy to step out of the comfort zone.
D. An act of kindness can set off a chain of events.
6. How was Timmons’ life impacted by others’ kindness
A. His dyslexic was successfully cured.
B. His scores were changed by others.
C. A teacher comforted him with warm words.
D. A professor assisted him in getting master’s degrees.
7. In what form is the book accessible to readers
A. Electronic version. B. Hard copy.
C. School workbook. D. Library document.
A 5. D 6. C 7. A

C
Each year, more than 27 million U.S. and Canadian kids get to school by bus. Most of those buses run on diesel (柴油) fuel, which give out pollution that riders can take in. Pollution levels can be several times higher inside a diesel school bus than outside it. Why Pollution can leak in from the floor or blow in through windows.
A U.S. government program started in 2012 offered schools’ money spent on cleaner school buses but not all schools could get it. Five years later, emissions from buses in the winning districts fell. And a year after getting new buses, student attendance had improved in those districts. For an average district of 10, 000 students, about six more students attended ‘school each day’ in the winning districts, compared to the losing districts. Winning schools with higher rates of bus-riding kids had an average of 14 more students in class each day. And winning districts that replaced the oldest school buses They had an average of 45 more students in school each day.
Those numbers may sound small, but they add up. And school attendance matters for student achievement. Almost 3 million U. S. kids ride school buses more than 20 years old. If U. S. school districts had replaced all of those older buses, there would have been 1. 3 million fewer student absences each year.
There might be other reasons for better attendance. For example, maybe kids preferred new buses. However, the most-likely reason for fewer student absences was better health. A study done on adults showed that a brief exposure to diesel emissions reduced “network connectivity” in the brain. In other studies, such network-connectivity changes have been linked to worsened memory and mental tasks. A Washington State program upgraded pollution controls in old diesel buses. Afterward, fewer kids were hospitalized in those districts than in schools without bus upgrades.
Almost all U. S. school districts can apply for the program. But schools in low-income areas, in tribal areas and, in rural areas will get priority. Kids in these areas tend to face the most health risks from older buses.
8. What can we infer about diesel school buses from the first paragraph
A. They have a short service life.
B. They operate cost-effectively.
C They accommodate few passengers.
D. They do much harm to school children.
9. Why is the increase in school attendance small but important
A. It is a long accumulation. B. It is a winning condition.
C. It is a measuring standard. D. It is a student achievement.
10. How does the bus replacement bring better student attendance
A. By reducing the network connectivity.
B. By bettering the health state of students.
C. By improving student satisfaction with schools.
D. By meeting students’ demand for school bus drivers.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The “network connectivity” in the brain.
B. The great work on cleaner school buses.
C. A U. S. government program for education.
D. Better attendance due to new school buses.
D 9. A 10. B 11. D
S. and Canadian kids get to school by bus. Most of those buses run on diesel (柴油) fuel, which give out pollution that riders can take in. Pollution levels can be several times higher inside a diesel school bus than outside it. Why Pollution can leak in from the floor or blow in through windows.”(美国和加拿大的孩子坐公共汽车上学。
根据第三段“Those numbers may sound small, but they add up. And school attendance matters for student achievement. Almost 3 million U. S. kids ride school buses more than 20 years old. If U. S. school districts had replaced all of those older buses, there would have been 1. 3 million fewer student absences each year.”(这些数字听起来可能很小,但积少成多。 故选A项。
根据第四段中“There might be other reasons for better attendance. For example, maybe kids preferred new buses. However, the most-likely reason for fewer student absences was better health.”(提高出勤率可能还有其他原因。
因此D选项“Better attendance due to new school buses”(由于有了新的校车,出勤率提高了。)
D
Many animals and plants are endangered in the world today. These endangered species are threatened with becoming extinct, meaning they will no longer exist on Earth. Examples include the Cuban Macaw and the Sri Lankan Legume Tree. Illegal hunting, and collecting of the Macaw bird for pets, led to its extinction. While the main reason the native Sri Lankan Legume Tree went extinct was due to habitat loss from development in the 20th century. The main cause for animals and plants disappearing is often a damage to the food chain due to hunting, habitat loss or even the introduction of new species.
Every living thing from one- celled animals to a blue whale needs to eat. Nature is connected and controlled by many weak food chains. A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat. When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present—for example, a species goes extinct—the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapsed.
Humans can have horrible effects on food chains. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home countries to the places they explored and settled in. They did not realize the consequences of introducing invasive species. By doing so, they were damaging the natural food chains of the areas they explored.
Nowadays there are strict rules controlling the movement of animals and plants between countries. But some parts of the world are still experiencing problems with invasive species introduced hundreds of years ago.
With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to thrive. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.
12. Which is the main reason for Cuban Macaw’s extinction
A. Illegal hunting. B. Food chain damage.
C. Invasive species. D. Habitat loss.
13. What do we know about a food chain in paragraph 2
A. It only affects one-celled animals. B. It decides the balance of the whole system.
C. It is always broken by invasive species. D. It breaks after nearly ten species disappear.
14. How do humans seriously affect food chains
A. By hunting endangered animals. B. By exploring new places.
C. By polluting natural environment. D. By introducing invasive species.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Disappearance of Endangered Species B. Effect of Illegal Hunting on a Habitat
C. The Link between Food Chains and Extinction D. Damage of Invasive Species
A 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第一段“Examples include the Cuban Macaw and the Sri Lankan Legume Tree. Illegal hunting, and collecting of the Macaw bird for pets, led to its extinction. (例如古巴金刚鹦鹉和斯里兰卡豆科树。非法狩猎和收集金刚鹦鹉作为宠物导致了它的灭绝。)”可知,非法狩猎导致古巴金刚鹦鹉灭绝。故选A。
根据第二段“Nature is connected and controlled by many fragile food chains. A food chain describes who eats whom in a habitat. When one of the links in a food chain is no longer present — for example, a species goes extinct — the food chain breaks and sometimes this can cause other animals to disappear and the whole system can become imbalanced or even collapsed. (大自然是由许多脆弱的食物链连接和控制的。食物链描述了在栖息地中谁吃谁。当食物链中的一个环节不再存在时,例如,一个物种灭绝,食物链就会断裂,有时这可能导致其他动物消失,整个系统就会变得不平衡甚至崩溃。)”可知,食物链的每个环节都决定着整个系统的平衡,故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Humans can have disastrous effects on food chains. When people first explored the world, they took animal and plant species from their home countries to the places they explored and settled in. They did not realize the consequences of introducing invasive species. By doing so, they were damaging the natural food chains of the areas they explored. (人类可以对食物链造成灾难性的影响。当人们第一次探索世界时,他们从自己的国家把动物和植物物种带到他们探索和定居的地方。他们没有意识到引入入侵物种的后果。通过这样做,他们正在破坏他们所探索地区的自然食物链。)”可知,因为人们引入入侵物种,给食物链造成灾难性的影响。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段最后一句“The main cause for animals and plants disappearing is often a damage to the food chain due to hunting, habitat loss or even the introduction of invasive species. (动植物消失的主要原因往往是由于狩猎、栖息地丧失甚至是入侵物种的引入而破坏了食物链。)”,最后一段“With rising awareness of how we affect the natural environment, hopefully we can learn to protect these food chains and help them to thrive. Otherwise the continued loss of species will eventually mean our own extinction.

“I still remember I step into my high school”中的“step”应使用过去式“stepped”,因为描述的是过去发生的事情。
“the first month test”中的“test”应改为“monthly test”,因为这里表示的是“每月一次的考试”,其中monthly是形容词,意思是“每月的”。
故答案是将that改为whether或if。
help是不可数名词,不需要变成复数,应为“with the help of”,意思是“在……的帮助下”。故答案是将helps改为help。
7. 考查动词的非谓语形式。句意:我在友好的同学和老师的帮助下,我鼓起勇气,重新振作精神,全身心投入到学习中,因此在一些学习成绩上取得了不错的成绩。“thus do well”中的“do”应使用非谓语形式,与上句为主动关系,用现在分词。故答案是将do改为doing。
8. 考查冠词。句意:此外,我积极参与了丰富多彩的课外活动,从中受益匪浅。“I took active part in”中的“part”是可数名词,应该在前面添加冠词,根据句意可知,本句并不表示特指,正确表达为“took an active part in”,这也是个固定搭配,意思是“积极参与……”。
中受益”,所以“on which I benefited a lot”中的“on”应改为“from/through/by”。故答案是on改为将from或through或by。
“which are part of my growth”中的“are”应改为“is”,因为“which”指代的是单数名词“my senior school life”。

C
Each year more than 27 million U.S. and Canadian kids get to school by bus.
But schools in low-income areas in tribal areas and, in rural areas will get priority. Kids in these areas tend to face the most health risks from older buses.
8. What can we infer about diesel school buses from the first paragraph
A. They have a short service life.
B. They operate cost-effectively.
