It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy hank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added. “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy hank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents. I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years. I had only put money into the piggy hank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy hank for anything. Bat one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces. I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank. I was thinking about what I could do with it.

I started in on Winn-Dixie right away, trying to clean him. First, I gave him a bath. The whole time I was working on him, I was talking to him. And he listened. I told him how we were alike. “See,” I said, “you don’t have any family and neither do I. I’ve got the preacher, of course. But I don’t have a mama. I mean I have one, but I don’t know where she is. She left when I was three years old. I can’t hardly remember her. And I bet you don’t remember your mama much either. So we’re almost like orphans (孤儿).”
Winn-Dixie looked straight at me when I said that to him, like he was feeling relieved to finally have somebody understand his situation. I nodded my head at him and went on talking.
“I don’t even have any friends, because I had to leave them all behind when we moved here from Watley. Watley’s up in north Florida. Have you ever been to north Florida ”
Winn-Dixie looked down at the ground, like he was trying to remember if he had. “You know what ” I said. “Ever since we moved here, I’ve been thinking about my mama extra-extra hard, more than I ever did when I was in Watley.”
Winn-Dixie twitched (抽动) his ears and raised his eyebrows.
“I think the preacher thinks about my mama all the time, too. He’s still in love with her; I know that. He’s still hoping she’ll come back. But he doesn’t tell me that. He won’t talk to me about her at all. I want to know more about her. But I’m afraid to ask the preacher; I’m afraid he’ll get mad at me.”
Winn-Dixie looked at me hard, like he was trying to say something.
“What ” I said.
He stared at me.
“You think I should make the preacher tell me about her ”

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin.
“Thief!”
I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, “Are you Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!”
On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”
I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much ”
“Yes, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,” the boy replied.
“Then, I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.
I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper’s photo.

I stood in front of the house, waiting for Grandma’s box of cookies. Every Saturday, a box of cookies would arrive on our doorstep tied with a brown string. As far as I could remember, Grandma, carrying the box, was always there on time.
Jack, my younger brother, had always been fonder of the cookies. He was still childish, maybe not understanding the value of time with family. As for me, I was always Grandma’s little girl, and possibly she loved me more than Mom. There was something about Grandma that made her so special. In fact, seeing her every Saturday was the happiest thing all week for me.
Jack played in the yard and picked flowers for the dinner table. Mom always wanted the prettiest ones, and Jack just knew which ones she would love most.
“The weather report says today will be a rainy day. So will Grandma still come ” Jack asked.
“I’m not sure,” I answered, looking up at the sky. The clouds were dark gray and thick, which just made me more upset. However, Jack didn’t seem too excited about the cookies this time. He was arranging his flowers attentively.
“You’d better come in! I can feel a few raindrops on my head,” Mom shouted. Jack quickly ran towards her, carrying many flowers. Some even slipped out of his hands, creating a colorful trail behind him.
“I brought you some roses Mom!” Jack said, shoving (猛推) the flowers into her hands. I found he left some flowers in his hand. Who was he going to give them to Mom then looked back at me. “Would you rather be outside in the rain ” she questioned. I shook my head. “It’s just a box of cookies. I can get it next Saturday,” I thought. However, I knew it was more about the cookies — it was a lot of love from Grandma.
Mom gave me a small smile and repeated, “I knew you wouldn’t want to get e in, baby.” I was about to step inside when a familiar voice came, “Jenny, I’m coming!” I turned back and saw Grandma shuffling (拖着脚走) towards me.

A Lesson from My Sister
My parents worked very hard at ensuring that everything seemed pleasant for me and I mostly ignored the fact that my elder sister was different. The child psychologist had termed it as “Asperger Syndrome”(阿斯伯格综合症,一种自闭障碍).This diagnosis turned my parents world upside down-but they never let it affect me.
It was only at the age of ten that I started to notice the differences, and become conscious of my social life and self-image that I had carefully cultivated. My sister was socially awkward. She could not look at people in the eye. She would mumble(嘟哝)to herself and repeat the words she had just said under her breath. She, however, was academically capable, and hence we attended the same primary school. Despite this, I never, ever acknowledged in public that she was my sister. There was one incident, however, just two years ago, that remains imprinted in my consciousness. It was the incident that changed how I viewed my sister. It was the incident that changed me.
Being in primary six, about to graduate, my sister and her classmates had to put up a performance, whether in a group,or individually. Due to her inability to integrate(融入),my sister was the only one left without a group. The school had made it a rule for everyone to put up an item, so my sister had to perform individually. ”I’ll sing.” my sister told my parents, confidently. Hearing that, I was taken aback and completely shocked. I knew she would embarrass me, one way or another. “No!” I protested. My parents shot me a look and that was when I knew my sister was going to perform, no matter what. Silently, I prayed that something would happen and I would not have to watch my sister shame herself.
That day came. I sat in the hall, waiting for the performances to start. The lights dimmed(变昏暗) a minute or two later and the curtains parted to reveal the only solo-my sister. She blinked(眨眼)a couple of times, as if the lights shining on her were hurting her eyes.

A Different Christmas
It was almost Christmas, but Diego wasn’t feeling very excited. This was the firstChristmas since his parents got divorced. And nothing felt the same. He and his brother,Samuel, wouldn’t even get to see Mom this Christmas.
“Everything’s different,”Diego said to Dad.
“I know.”Dad’s eyes were sad.“Sometimes things change before they get better.”He was quiet for a bit, then smiled.“Christmas will be different this year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have some good times. We’ll still be celebrating the birth of the Savior.”
Diego nodded. It would be hard not seeing Mom, but maybe Christmas could still be good, just as Dad said. Diego wanted to help make this Christmas a happy one.
He went to his room to think. Sometimes for Christmas they did a family service project. What could they do this year
Diego looked around his room. He saw a toy car he didn’t play with anymore. He picked it up and spun(使快速旋转) the wheels. It was still really good. Maybe he and Dad and Samuel could give some toys to kids who didn’t have any! He found a few other toys and put them in a bag with the car.
When Diego finished, he took the bag to Samuel’s room.“Can I help you clean your room ” he asked. “It’s a surprise for Dad.”
Samuel looked up from the picture he was drawing. “Sure.”
The boys worked together to clean Samuel’s room. Diego told him about the plan. They found a few toys that Samuel didn’t play with and added them to the bag.
When they were done, they carried the bag downstairs.“Dad,”Diego said,“we found some toys we don’t play with anymore. Can we give them to kids who don’t have any toys ”
Dad looked surprised and happy.“That’s a great idea! Let’s take them to the homeless shelter this afternoon.”

【答案】参考范文:
The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. “There should be a lot of money in it. This is years of my savings,” I said to myself. I was about to break it and withdraw money when my mina came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. However, thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the piggy bank broke into pieces and the coins rolled all over the floor.
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. I explained to him what had happened. Having known my thought, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” I was overwhelmed with happiness. From that day on, you would always see me riding my bike on the street, leaving my hearty laughter behind.

【答案】
Winn-Dixie still looked at me. “I’ll think about it,” I said. “But you should know that the preacher is very fond of your mama and he won’t be angry with you for asking about her.” I reassured him, knowing that his mother’s absence had left a deep wound in his heart. “You are my friend, Winn-Dixie,” I continued, “and I will always be here for you. If there’s anything you want to talk about, don’t hesitate to tell me.” He whined and licked my hand as he followed me. Then he tucked its tail and gave me a warm smile. It seemed that this little furry got across what I meant.
It was the first time that I had a heart-to-heart talk with my dad—the preacher. As we sat together, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of guilt for not being there when he needed me the most. “I should have been more aware of how much he missed my mama,” I thought to myself. “Perhaps I can help him find some comfort in talking about her.” Determined, I approached the preacher one evening and gently suggested that he spend some time getting to know Winn-Dixie better. To my surprise, he readily agreed, and from that moment on, they became close friends. As they spent more time together, I saw a glimmer of hope in his eyes—a hope that one day, he might be able to find the love and acceptance he so desperately sought.

【答案】
I rushed towards Grandma with open arms. I hugged her tightly, nearly knocking her off balance. She threw me a faint smile and held me close to her heart. I could feel her warm breath on my shoulder. The sight of her holding the box of cookies tied with a brown string brought joy to my heart. “I couldn’t let a little rain stop me from seeing my favorite girl and boy,” Grandma chuckled. She handed me the box of cookies. I held it delicately, and I thought it was the most precious in the world.
“Grandma, you brought the cookies again!” Jack said happily. He didn’t hug Grandma but asked her to close her eyes. I guessed he was playing a joke on Grandma. However, I was wrong. Surprisingly, he took out a beautiful bouquet of roses from behind his back. “Thank you, Grandma. The flowers are for you, my loving grandma.” I could see that Grandma was almost moved to tears. He held Grandma’s hand and guided her in front of the fireplace. I opened the box, and we enjoyed the delicious cookies together, talking and laughing.

【答案】It took about a whole minute for her to stammer her name and class. By that time, murmurs were heard in the audience. "Why is she taking so long " people around me asked. I shifted nervously in my seat, wishing I were somewhere else. Finally, my sister started to sing. I braced myself for the worst. She opened her mouth, and I was transfixed-she sang effortlessly and melodiously. Her voice rang unselfconsciously through the hall, beautiful in its power. I exhaled and watched in wonder.
How did I not know that my sister could sing so sweetly How could I have doubted my sister’s abilities I listened ever so carefully to the lyrics she had composed all by herself and my heart gave way. I had been so wrong. Guilt and shame filled my heart as I listened to my sibling. Although she knew that I was embarrassed by her and was reluctant to attend her concert, she had forgiven me; she had never taken anything that I had done to her to heart. It was then that I resolved to love her unconditionally. It was as if a veil had been lifted from my eyes, and my heart was full.
