Text type Narration
Text analysis What: This article describes Kayla's physical and mental transformation before and after fitness. This lesson explores the relationship between sports and people's lives from the perspective of health. Students are required to understand the correct attitude towards fitness and write a passage to explain their own changes. Why: The narration aims to guide students to develop correct healthy values and fitness methods, and understand that a healthy life includes not only physical health but also mental health. In this way, students are reminded to pay attention to all aspects of their health and develop a holistic concept of wellness. How: The structure of the text is clear and simple: the first paragraph describes the past problems and concerns; The second paragraph describes the way she did to change her mind; The third paragraph describes what did she got after changing her thinking. The article adopts the method of comparison and contrast: comparing the past and the present. Also this is an easy rhetorical device that students can use in their writing.
Learner analysis Most students have a basic vocabulary on health topics, but they are not able to write passage by using comparison and contrast. They have known many sports events in listening and speaking, and learned how to do when facing difficulties in reading and thinking, such as never give up. In this class, students are able to imitate the rhetorical device -- comparison and contrast-- and the structure: What did Kayla did in the past How did she change her mind? What did she got at the present? In this case, students are able to write a passage to explain their own changes
Teaching objectives Based on the analysis of material and learners, and subject core competencies in General Senior High School Curriculum Standards, teaching objectives are followed: By the end of the class, students will be able to : Language ability: Students are able to integrate the vocabulary learned before for this writing class, such as jogging, basketball, high jumping and so on. And also they will collect information about the positive changes of Kayla, such as: asking “am I fit ” instead of “am I fit ”. They are able to list the words and phrases that show similarities and differences and write a short paragraph to describe and explain their positive changes. Thinking capacity Students can understand why Kay wanted to be slim according to their existing knowledge; however, they are not aware of the wrong attitude towards health. They may think that they will be more beautiful if they get thinner. In this class, students will construct new concept and judge their old ideas. Learning ability: In this class, students are able to know there are lots of resources they can used for learning -- a wellness book.

Pre - reading (5 minutes) Lead in Reviewing what students have learned in last two lessons briefly and ask them a question: Do you know how to exercise correctly and form a positive attitude towards fitness? Prediction Students makes prediction from the photos and title and find out the topic or theme. And then the teacher shows the definition of a wellness book. Prediction is the reading skill that students learned in “reading and thinking” part. Making prediction makes students’ mind more closer to the theme.
While-reading (15 minutes) Skimming Read the passage fast and summarize the main idea of each paragraph. Guiding students to summarize it in their own words. Para. 1: What Kayla did in the past. Para. 2: How she changed her mind. Para. 3: What she got at the present. Scanning Students are guided to find out which sentences or phrases indicating the main idea. In this way, students not only find out what Kayla did, but also know what they can write in their short passage. Para. 1: What Kayla did in the past. “I worried about my weight and tried every new diet read about online.I tried no-fat,low-fat,5:2, only bananas,no bananas---l almost went bananas, too.” In this paragraph, students can learn the words like slim, worried about , diet in their first paragraph, in which they can talk about food, figure or other kind of worries. Para. 2: How she changed her mind. In this paragraph, students can learn some phrases indicating differences like rather than, make a difference, instead of, which is useful in their second paragraph -- how did they do to change the present situation. Para. 3: What she got at the present. In this paragraph, students can learn what Kayla got after changing her thinking. And they can use the structure “become more and more...” to express their achievements and joy. After that,the teacher shows more phrases to express similarities and differences to help students finish the writing. Students underline the words and phrases used in the text to show similarities and differences. Similarities: look like(Para.1) (Addition: like,so,too,still,similarly,similar to, the same as, in common with,both...and) Differences: instead of, rather than(Para.2),instead (Para.3) (Addition: than, however, different from, the difference is, however, but, though, on the other hand, in contrast) Show similarities or differences: compare with (Para.3) And the blackboard followed: Students know the structure and the content of their own passage. Skimming for main idea is quite important skill in reading. And summarizing in their own words makes students more brave and reduces their fear in learning English. Scanning to find specific information and according to students’ answer, teacher can summarize the answer and encourage students to speak more. Students are guided to find out the structure of the whole text and imitate the passage to write a short passage on their own. With the further study, students are going to become more familiar with the words and phrases used in the text to show similarities and differences. Teacher are supposed to record all the answers on the blackboard and encourage the students. Knowing more words, students will find more easier to write a passage.
Writing (18 minutes) Writing And write a short paragraph to describe and explain their positive changes. Content: Para.1 What did you usually do in the past Such as, stress,food,exercise... Para.2 what will you do to change your situation phrases: rather than, make a difference, instead of, never stay up late, keep running,listening to music Para.3 what will you expect to gain phrases: become more and pare with Such as confidence, healthy,strong body. Example paragraph: I am a teacher. I want to feel better about myself and be healthier because sometimes I get down, have no energy, and worry about things too much. I decided to change my diet to make it healthier. For example, I stopped eating fast food so often,and introduced fruit and vegetables into my diet every day. I also do my exercises regularly to keep fit. Now, because I became healthier, I became much happier and better about myself too. This has made me more confident to make new friends and try new things. 6.revising Use the checklist to find out how to revise your draft. 8.Reviewing Given more examples and sentences, students can combine those sentences with their own experiences to write a passage about their change. Given the topic and content, students will have a direction to write.
