【原文】W: As a writer I seem to spend most of the time working in my office at home, sitting alone in front of the computer. In fact, the only people I see regularly are the members of my family, when they get home from work or school. Otherwise, I don’t have much chance to meet face-to-face with people. And I’m sorry that I haven’t kept in touch with the friends I made in college. I often get letters from the readers though, and I try to get out of the house at least once a day. From time to time, I give lectures in public libraries or teach courses at colleges in North America. But if I ever run out of ideas or I start suffering from loneliness, I’ll give up writing books. Then maybe I’ll start a new job where I work with lots of people and I can have a conversation whenever I feel like one.

Then he starts sneezing. He sneezes three times without stopping. “Allergies,” says my dad. “Uh-oh,” I say, and they all look at me, even my other brother, Jacob Jay. I have to explain about the kitten and the garbage can and the soft little sound.
In the end, I had to return the cat. My dad asked me to take the cat to the house with a tree in front. The boy who answers the door is Kevin’s age. “Shadow!” he yells, and grabs the kitten. The boy’s mother comes to the door and tells us that they had left a window open. When they came home, Shadow was gone. She thanks us for bringing Shadow back safely. Dad takes my hand and we hold hands all the way home. I am still sorry I can’t have a pet, but I am not lonely.

Hem an Bekele is not your typical high school student.Rather than spending his free time
playing video games or staring at his phone, this 14 year-old from Fairfax, Virginia was calling
professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to
make it affordable for everyone who needs it.His work won him the grand prize in this year’s

3M Young Scientist’s Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to
solve everyday problems.
Growing up in Ethiopia, Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to
end up getting skin cancer . Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most
cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40,000.Those
shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing
experiments and working on different things, and that turned into his bar of soap as a project.
A lot of his research and development started in his family’s kitchen and in his
basement. But as he reached the final of the competition, he realized that he did need to do a
little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia
and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be
Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and structure his ideas during the finalist
competition.Bekele said that he definitely couldn’t have done that all by himself.
Bekele’s award-winning soap is a compound(化合物 ) based on bar of soap and it’s
charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of
white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂).It does have a
strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash
off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin.It can activate the body’s immune cells
to defend cancer.
Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said,
“I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research, so this money will definitely
help me achieve it.”
24.Why did Heman Bekele start working on creating the soap
A.Because he thought it was a fun project.
B.Because he wanted to win a science competition.
C.Because he found skin cancer treatment unaffordable.
D.Because he wanted to create a unique soap for everyone.
25.What can we learn from Bekele’s preparations for the final
A.Well begun is half done.
B.Learn humbly(谦虚地), ask willingly.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

In 2002, Huang Hui, a researcher of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, went
diving near Xisha. After that, she was left with memories of a beautiful experience with clear
water and abundant colorful corals (珊瑚 ). However, much of the breathtaking scenery has
disappeared due to climate change and human activities, which leads to the decline of the coral
reef in the near shore waters. "We started to cultivate corals near the Xisha Islands in 2010, and
restored more than 200, 000 square meters of coral reefs." Huang said.
In 2004, when Huang was attending the 10th International Coral Reef Symposium, she
found herself the only representative from the Chinese mainland. She said she felt sad but she
made up her mind to strengthen communication with other countries to improve China's level
and status in coral research. She visited top coral research institutes and established long-term
cooperation with some of the world's top coral researchers. By far, Huang has worked on coral
research and protection for 22 years. Now, China is in a leading position in terms of technology
and coral planting scale.
Huang believes that people's consciousness of coral protection matters most to the
sustainable development of the coral reefs. "I want to call on more people to love nature and
ocean." Huang said. Partly due to her efforts, Hainan Province released a law in 2017 banning
reef trading and damaging.
Huang works as a consultant for customs and frontier police on coral protection and
promotes coral protection in her local schools. Huang also provides online free training for
divers to teach them proper behavior in the sea to protect coral reefs.
"I hope that not only a coral island will be built but a sustainable development pattern will

One of the greatest contributions(投稿)to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also
one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to
serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English
language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition
but also the history of the word and quotations (引文) showing how it was used.
This was a huge task. So Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States,
and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English.
Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an

American Surgeon(外科医生)who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England.
He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the
next years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.
But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always refuse to visit
Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived,
he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell(囚室)at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for
the Criminally insane.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued
contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray
continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum
grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the
port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.
Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary
was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were
contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.

D.was intended to be the most ambitious English dictionary

An earthquake happens when two plates rub together. The earth plates travel in different
directions and at different speeds. 36 In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of
the earth’s surface caused by the earth’s rocky outer layer. The energy stored within is suddenly
released.
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and when it is happening. If an
unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. 37 Many of the
areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could
produce terrible damage.
38 Fortunately, however, most of them are unnoticed to the public because of the
small Richter scale (震 级 ). But large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that
measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, can cause millions of dollars in damage.
39 In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen
years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the city
was in such a mess that it didn’t have the money necessary to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. 40 In the 1906
earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake
can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep away everything in
their path.
A.Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year.
B.It is in the fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs.
C.Throughout history, there are numerous destructive big earthquakes.
D.If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction.
E.So it is of great importance to predict the movements of the earth plates.
F.If one plate is slowly forced under the other, pressure builds up until the plates break

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I am Denise Clarice, the only one in my class who does not have a pet. No dog waits for
me at the bus stop. No cat sits beside me while I read. I don’t even have a tiny, furry hamster
(仓鼠) to hold in my hand. But I don’t feel sorry. Why
The rule about no pets at our house is not because I am too young to have pets, because I
am 1l years old. Besides, I am very responsible. I always return library books on time and I do
my homework every day, even when I would rather play in the grass. The rule about no pets is
because of Kevin. He is my little brother and he is sensitive to pets, which make him sneeze
(打喷嚏).
One day, when I was walking home from school, I heard a soft little sound from behind a
garbage. I stopped and listened. There it was. I heard the sound again. I walked quietly up the
driveway and looked behind the garbage. A tiny ball of gray fur looked up at me and said,
“Meow.” Before I knew it, I was holding the cat. Before I knew it, I was walking toward home,
holding the cat in my arms. She must be lost. “Finders keepers,” I thought.
I took the cat upstairs to my room. We played with a ball, and she jumped high to catch
the ball. I was excited that I made a comfortable little bed for her in a box with a small blanket
and gave her milk to drink. Soon, my mother called me to dinner.
