【重点语法】
过去进行时
1.过去进行时的用法
(1) 表示过去某个时间正在发生的动作。
e.g. He was cooking at six yesterday evening.昨天晚上六点,他正在做饭。
(2) 表示过去某段时间内正在发生的动作。
e.g. I was staying here from March to May last year.
去年三月到五月,我一直待在这里。
2.过去进行时的构成:was/were+现在分词
e.g. I was watching TV at nine yesterday evening.
昨天晚上九点我正在看电视。
e.g. My father was sweeping the floor when I arrived home.
我到家的时候,我爸爸正在扫地。
3.与过去进行时搭配的时间状语
常见的有at that time,at this time yesterday等或when/while引导的时间状语从句。
e.g. The baby was sleeping at nine yesterday evening.
昨天晚上九点那个婴儿正在睡觉。
e.g. He was playing games when I saw him.
当我看到他的时候,他正在玩游戏。
【词汇用法】
sleepy,asleep and sleep
(1)sleepy作形容词,意为“困乏的;昏昏欲睡的”。
e.g. She is always sleepy in class. 她总是在课堂上打瞌睡。
I feel very sleepy now. 我现在非常困。
(2)asleep作形容词,意为“睡着的”,常作表语。
e.g. The children have been asleep. 孩子们已经睡着了。
He was too tired and fell asleep at once. 他太困了,立刻就睡着了。
(3)sleep常作动词,意为“睡着”;它也可作名词,表示“睡一觉”。
e.g. Last night I slept very well. 昨天晚上我睡得很好。
You need to have a good sleep. 你需要好好地睡一觉。
I’m so sleepy that I can’t read the book now.

宾语补足语可以是形容词、副词、介词短语、V-ing、V-ed等。

此句中介词with表示一种伴随的状况,同时还包含着某种因果关系,表示“因某种状况的存在而导致……”,因此可译作“由于;因为”等。

2.Ben’s dad was putting pieces of wood over the windows while his mom was making sure the flashlights and radio were working.
while连接的时间状语从句可以表示某个动作正在进行的同时,另一个动作也在进行中。
1) While Dad was washing his car, Mum was cooking.
爸爸在洗车时,妈妈在做饭。
2) I was doing my homework while he was listening to music.,
我在做作业而他在听音乐。
此句中的连词while的意思是“当……的时候;和……同时”,while还可以表示 “然而;但(是)”之意,用来说明或强调两种事情或情形的不同。例如:
Tom is active and outgoing while his sister Rosa is shy and quiet.
汤姆活跃外向, 而他的妹妹罗莎却羞怯腼腆。
make sure的意思是“确认;查明;核实,其后可接句子或接介词of及宾语,用来引入需要确认的内容。例如:
Could you make sure what time he’s arriving I would like to go and meet him at the airport.
你能确认一下他几点到达吗?我想去机场接他。
Make sure you turn off the TV before you leave the house.
在你离开屋子前请确保关闭了电视。
make sure (+ that从句):
“(把某事)弄清楚;确定;查明”
1) -Did you lock the front door -你锁前门了吗
-I think so, but I’d better make sure. - 可能吧,我还是最好去确认下。
2) Emma peered into the room to make sure that Ruth was asleep.
埃玛往房间里仔细看,想搞清楚鲁思是不是睡着了。
此句中的work表示机器、器官等的“运作;运转”,这是动词work的一种基本用法。
e.g. My watch is waterproof— that means it would work well even if it’s in water.
我的手表是防水的——这就是说即便在水里它也会正常运转。
My brain isn't working well now.这会儿我的脑子不好使。
3. Ben was helping his mom make dinner when the rain began to beat heavily against the windows.
beat against:连续撞击;拍打
1) Waves beat against the cliffs.
海浪拍打着悬崖。
2) The rain beat against her face as she struggled through the wind.
她在风中奋力前进,雨水打在了她的脸上。
4. He finally fell asleep when the wind was dying down at around 3:00 a.m.
die down:逐渐变弱;逐渐消失
1) When the applause had died down, she began her speech.

5.Ben was helping his mom make dinner when the rain began to beat heavily against the windows
beat作动词,意为“敲打,打”,常和against/ on连用。beat作动词,可意为“打败,战胜”。 beat sb. /team赢了某人某队。注意:win赢,后常接比赛,奖品,名誉,财产等
against作介词,可用来表示位置,意为“倚;碰;撞”。 against还可意为“反对”其反义词是for“支持”。

7. When he woke up, the sun was rising. 当他醒来的时候,太阳正在升起。
rise是不及物动词,意为:(价格、水位等)上涨;(月亮、太阳等)上升。
e.g. It is too hot. The temperature rises by 6℃ today.
太热了。今天的气温一下子上升了6 摄氏度。
