Elias’ Story
词数:684 文体:说明文摘自:旧人教Book 1&Unit 5
你听过“光辉岁月”这首歌吗?你知道它是为谁创作的吗?现在,就让我们一起聆听伊利亚斯的故事,走近那个一生都在追求自由的伟人曼德拉吧……
My name is Elias. I am a poor black worker in South Africa. The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. I was twelve years old. It was in 1952 and Mandela was the black lawyer to whom I went for advice. He offered guidance to poor black people on their legal problems. He was generous with his time, for which I was grateful.
I needed his help because I had very little education. I began school at six. The
school where I studied for only two years was three kilometers away. I had to leave because my family could not continue to pay the school fees and the bus fare. I could not read or write well. After trying hard, I got a job in a gold mine. However, this was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg. Sadly I did not have it because I was not born there, and I worried about whether I would become out of work.
The day when Nelson Mandela helped me was one of my happiest. He told me how to get the correct papers so I could stay in Johannesburg. I became more hopeful about my future. I never forgot how kind Mandela was. When he organized the ANC Youth League, I joined it as soon as I could. He said:
“The last thirty years have seen the greatest number of laws stopping out rights and progress, until today we have reached a stage[footnoteRef:0] where we have almost no rights at all.” [0: stage : n. a stage of an activity, process, or period is one part of it]
It was the truth. Black people could not vote or choose their leaders. They could not get the jobs they wanted. The parts of town in which they had to live were decided by white people. The places outside the towns where they were sent to live were the poorest parts of South Africa. No one could grow food there. In fact as Nelson Mandela said:
“…we were put into a position[footnoteRef:1] in which we had either to accept we were less important or fight the government. We chose to attack the laws. We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful; when this was not allowed…only then did we decide to answer violence[footnoteRef:2] with violence.” [1: positionn. the situation at a particular ] [2: violence n. abehavior that is intended to hurt, injure, or kill people. ]
As a matter of fact, I do not like violence… but in 1963 I helped him blow up some government buildings. It was very dangerous because if I was caught. I could be put in prison. But I was happy to help because I knew it would help us achieve our dream of making black and white people equal.

A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE
词数:567 文体:记叙文摘自:旧人教版BOOK4 UNIT1
It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Africa. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chimps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and waits in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Then we follow as they wander[footnoteRef:3] into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. However, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her babies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. [3: wanderv. move about aimlessly or without any destination]
Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observing and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she first arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to begin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For example, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until then everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chimps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how chimps communicate with each other, and her study of their body language helped her work out their social system.
For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argued that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment[footnoteRef:4] or advertisements. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life but she says: “Once I stop, it all comes crowding in and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It's terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, “Aren't they lucky " And then I think about small chimps in cages though they have done nothing wrong. Once you have seen that you can never forget ...” [4: entertainment n. a diversion that holds the attention]
She has achieved everything she wanted to do: working with animals in their own environment, gaining a doctor's degree and showing that women can live in the forest as men can. She inspires those who want to cheer the achievements of women.
Comprehending
From Jane's study, can you describe the bond between members of a chimp family
What can you learn from the passage.
MODEL OF THE TIMES---Zhang Guimei
词数:833 文体:说明文 摘自:网络
On June 29, 2021, Zhang Guimei was awarded the highest honor of CPC —the July 1st Medal in the Great Hall of the People. This tough, stubborn and even a little paranoid(偏执的) woman once again came into the public's view. She was put into an embarrassing situation in October last year , when she made remarks against her student becoming a full-time mother. Therefore, she has also been labeled "feminism" by many netizens. But I believe that if you read the following story and learn about her original intention and persistence, you will definitely understand and admire her a bit more.
From childhood to youth, Zhang Guimei lived a life of worry-free clothing and food . She was also an outgoing girl who advocated freedom, and loved art. She ever had a pretty happy marriage, and her husband loved her very much. However, the good times did not last long before her husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Although she exhausted all her savings to give her husband the best treatment , her husband left her forever in February 1995 .This was a very fatal blow to her , which made her unable to pull herself from grief for some time. Perhaps intending to escape from reality, she applied for a job transfer and moved from Xizhou, Dali to Huaping County , where she started her legendary life.
If she hadn’t seen with her own eyes the unimaginable poverty and ignorance in the mountains and the tragedies that happened to women, Zhang Guimei might not have the idea of building a free girls-only high school . At first, she just wanted all the girls in her class not to drop out of school, but when she went to the mountains to visit her students’ homes, she found that there were so many girls of school age who could not go to school. She was very confused and couldn't think out a method that can completely solve this problem. In the end, she made a conclusion that only by providing them with free education can all this be changed. When she first proposed to build the high school for girls, people around her either thought she had a mental problem or laughed at her for being too naive. However, Zhang Guimei really started to take action. In order to prepare the school's money, she even went to the streets of Kunming to beg and collect donations, but it was far from enough. The turning point came in 2007, when Zhang Guimei became a representative of the Seventeenth National Congress (十七大)of the CPC. Her dream was known by the people of the whole country and recognized by the central leadership so that the construction of the girls-only high school entered a substantive(实质性的) stage.
For most girls in this school, if it hadn’t been for such a free high school and the persuasion of Zhang Guimei, maybe they would marry and have children early in their teens but without knowing how to educate and love their kids. It is precisely(精确地,恰恰) because of the particularity of this group that Zhang Guimei's management of the high school couldn’t be harsher. There is no so-called quality education, only repeatedly learning. She knows that these girls have no way back, and studying is their only chance to change their destiny. Carrying so many children's hopes by herself, she is always under a lot of pressure. So it’s reasonable that her words are a bit aggressive sometimes.
Although Zhang Guimei is now a hero praised by people, in fact she is also an ordinary person. In the very beginning, she did these things perhaps just to find a kind of spiritual sustenance(寄托). But year after year, seeing her students enter universities, go out of the mountains, and sail away, she feels that all her efforts are worthwhile. She often says that people always have to do something while they are alive. The high school develops better and better, having sent more than 1,800 poor girls to universities in total, yet years of heavy work and stress have taken their toll (代价)on Zhang Guimei. She suffers from more than 20 diseases, relying on a lot of medicine every day, and sometimes she feels so painful that she could only complain to her friends. However, she still has one wish that has not been fulfilled—her students can be admitted to Tsinghua University or Peking University. Perhaps this is also a motivation to support her in fighting so many illnesses.
A person devotes all of her energy to doing one thing—the thing that benefits others. This is already commendable(值得赞扬的)! Let’s pay our respects to Teacher Zhang Guimei, and hope that she can take care of her health and fulfill her unfinished wish!

My teacher,Mr August J.Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.
I had gotten into trouble in his class:Another student had pushed me for fun,and I became angry and began to hit him. Mr Bachmann stopped the fight, but instead of sending me to the office,he sat me down and asked a simple question:“Penna, why are you wasting your life? Why aren’t you going to college?”
I didn’t know anything about colleges or scholarships. No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a future. That day, instead of rushing off for lunch,he stayed and explained possible education options to me. At the end of our talk,he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962 at Emerson High School in Union City,New Jersey.
Well,53 years have passed, and what have I done with the knowledge he gave me?I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29.I taught English and social studies and then moved up the chain of command from teacher to principal.
I’ve sat on the board for Magnet Schools of America and represented that organization at the United Nations. I’ve won a number of great educational awards. But where would I be if a truly caring teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was without question only his confidence in me that helped me forward.
I have repaid his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to aim higher. If I have saved any children,it is because of him. If I have been a successful educator,it is because I had a great role model in Mr Bachmann.
24.The writer before Mr Bachmann talked to him.
A.was an active boy B.was an aimless boy

DNA is the chemical that carries the structure of a living thing, which is needed by researchers to bring back a species. Dinosaurs have been gone too long for any of their DNA to remain in fossils. However it seems possible to bring back more recently extinct species such as Ice Age animal, the woolly mammoth. In 2015,a team of Spanish and French scientists re created the Pyrenean ibex, which had gone extinct three years earlier. The new animal didn’t survive long, but scientific advances should improve the success rate. In January,Australian scientists announced that they were trying to restore the brooding frog.
That we can bring species back doesn’t mean that we should. There may be benefits to bring back a species. But there’s no way to know how it will turn out. For example, would a passenger pigeon fit into its old habitat?Or might it crowd out existing species
Environmentalists worry that our ability to bring species back might cut down support for the hard work of traditional conservation. Why bother to preserve a wildlife habitat or fight poachers(偷猎者) if we know we can make up for our mistakes
But those extinctions are our mistakes to correct. As environmentalist Stewart Brand put it,“Humans have the ability to repair some of that damage.”
We would do well to remember the lesson of Jurassic Park:Continue with caution.

Each day the online community reports on countless social justice issues around the world. From climate change and gun violence to natural disasters, readers come across a story, learn about an issue and often feel compelled to help. However, without any guidance on how to make a difference, many abandon the attempt and move on with their day.
Ideal Impact,a new Web based app(应用程序),sees that as a lost opportunity. The app is designed to connect news stories with efficient ways to help make a difference in the real world. Let’s say,for example, you recently read an article,“The heartbreaking world of captive(被抓的) exotic birds” and felt moved by the stories of the often sad lives those birds are forced to live. Once installed on your phone or browser,Ideal Impact would show you opportunities to volunteer, donate or get involved to help captive exotic birds.
Founder,Olivier Kamanda, explains in the company’s video,“What would happen when you come across a story that makes you want to get involved in?That arouses a fundamental question,‘How can I help?’ Unfortunately there is no platform that takes you from that moment of inspiration to a meaningful service opportunity. So every year 90 million people are inspired to get involved to do something with their time and they don’t know how. And that comes at a cost of 207 billion dollars in lost volunteer time and donations.” Kamanda said in an interview with the Smithsonian,“Our app bridges the gap between people who are inspired to make a difference and organizations that need support.”
Once the app is installed as a browser plugin(插件) on a desktop(台式电脑) or mobile device, you can read the news as you normally would. And then, when you come across a story that inspires you to take action, you can click on the Ideal Impact button that appears in the main menu of your browser. That will load the app and show you opportunities to get involved with non profit organizations that are working to deal with the issue you just read about.
32.What is Ideal Impact
A.It’s a piece of software. B.It’s a charity group.
C.It’s a computer. D.It’s a non profit organization.
33.How does the author explain the function of Ideal Impact
A.By making comparisons. B.By giving figures.
C.By giving quotations. D.By giving an example.
34.Ideal Impact can help people to .
