江苏省2024年中考英语专项训练:阅读理解
St. Clare loved Eva so much that he designed and decorated her bedroom with all the pretty things that suited her character most. Childhood, beauty, and peace could be seen everywhere in this lovely rose-colored room.
One night, Eva was sleeping weakly. St. Clare looked at his dear daughter and said in a sad tone, “O, if she could only wake, and speak once more!” “Dear papa,” said the child, with a last effort throwing her arms about his neck. But in a moment, they dropped again.
St. Clare turned away in great pain. “O, Tom, my boy, it is killing me.” He held Tom’s hand and said. Tom had his master’s hands between his own with tears running down his dark cheeks.
After the death of poor Eva, her room was no longer rose-colored and it was covered with white cloth. At the funeral St. Clare lived, walked, and moved as someone who had no more tears. Until the end he saw only one thing—his dead child.
He thought, “My Eva did so many good things in her short life. What can I give for my long years ”
Time passed. St. Clare’s life was empty without Eva, but he started to think of Eva’s words about his slaves. She said that she felt sad for their slaves. She said that they were all good and kind to her. She said that she wished them to be free.
One morning he went into town and started the legal(法律的)steps necessary for Tom’s freedom. The next day he called Tom.

Imagine your home is in the center of a big circle. Everything you need is a 10-minute walk away. How convenient!
Recently, a group of architects(建筑师) from South Korea decided to make this a reality. They are planning a city with everything people need—including living areas, offices and entertainment areas—within a 10-minute walk from home.
When explaining why they wanted to build such a city, Ben van Berkel, a leader of company UN Studio, said people’s daily life experience is the most important. The “10-minute city” is so convenient that it won’t take people much time to travel elsewhere. “With time that is saved, more time is created,” Berkel told CNN.
The idea of such a city is not new. In 2016, French-Colombian researcher Carlos Moreno put forward the 15-minute city idea. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more popular. During the pandemic, many people have been forced to spend most of their time at home, with less chance to go out of their communities.
Paloma Ezzet, 16, is an example. She said that before the pandemic, she liked to play soccer or go dancing. But during the pandemic, she had to give them up as no such entertainment areas or facilities(设备) were in her community. “It is gloomy, lonely and inconvenient,” Ezzet complained.
But not everyone likes the idea. Some people say it would further concentrate(集中) wealth in the most convenient areas, resulting in high house prices. So, should people stop considering this idea
Maybe not. As Bobulescu, a French professor, said. “The seeds are there, and they’ll grow little by little.”
5.According to the article, which of the following is TRUE
A.A group of architects from France decided to make “10-minute city” a reality.

Characters:“T”-Storyteller Bertie-storyteller’s husband The White Prince-a lion
We never had children of our own—just The White Prince—and I can tell you, he was enough of a family for anyone. He walked freely in the park just as we had planned he would, and ran after the deer and the rabbits whenever he felt like it; but he never did learn how to kill for himself. You can’t teach old lions new tricks. He lived on deer mostly, and slept on a sofa in our living room—I wouldn’t have him inside our bedroom, no matter how often Bertie asked. You know, I have to draw the line somewhere.
Bertie’s leg was never cured. When it was bad, he often needed a stick, or me, or the lion to lean on. It pained him a lot, especially on cold and wet days, and he never slept well. On Sundays the three of us would walk around the park together, and Bertie would sit on the top of Wood Hill with his arm around the lion’s neck and I would fly kites. You know, I’ve always loved kites. And the lion liked to break them into pieces.
The lion never showed any interest in running away, and even if he’d wanted to, the park wall was too high for an old lion to jump over. Wherever Bertie went, he wanted to go too. And if ever Bertie went out in the car, then he'd sit by me in the kitchen, and watch me with those great amber eyes, listening all the while for the sound of Bertie’s car coming up the path to the front of the house.
The lion was getting older. And he became weak in his legs and could see very little. He spent his last days sleeping at Bertie’s feet. When he died, we buried(埋葬)him at the bottom of the hill. Bertie wanted it that way so he could always see the place from the kitchen window. I suggested Bertie plant a tree in case he forgot where the lion was. “I will, but he should get more than a tree.” Bertie said.
Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even comfort him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks by himself. He seemed so sad inside himself, so distant. Try as I did, I could not reach him.
(Adapted from The Butterfly Lion)

D.She wanted to stop the lion walking freely in the park.

Dear Mrs. Friend, Do you think it is worth buying a good second-hand fridge to replace the one in my house There’s ice everywhere in the fridge all the time. I have checked out all the self-help videos on the Internet, but it didn’t work. It is a very old machine and probably there’s something wrong with it, and age is wasting energy. I am looking for ways to cut my family’s energy bills as much as possible. Looking forward to your valuable advice. Betty
Dear Betty, This is a really interesting question, especially right now, when energy usage is at the front of all our minds. There are a few things you need to work out. First, what is the energy efficiency rating(能效等级)of the fridge in service now and the item you find in the market Level 2 might sound good but it isn’t actually the best. Level 1 saves the most energy for you. Then you’d need to see what the probable costs were for each one. The differences aren’t huge. For example, an average(平均的)Level 2 rated fridge will probably cost 760 a year to run, while a Level 1 one is 380. Half price is a good saving, but if you paid 3800 for a new one, it’d take ten years to break even. Hopefully you’d get something for less, shortening the time taken to repay the costs, and as you say, if the one in your home is not working properly, it could be costing even more. That could be the good reason to take the plunge now. But if your worries about money are how much you have right now, it might be better to hold off and look again if energy prices drop(though it’s likely they will go up even more in July). Hope my advice’s worth taking. Jean Friend

My first home was a beautiful meadow with a pond of clear water. There were some large trees near the pond. On one side of the meadow was a field and on the other was the house of our master, Farmer Grey. He was a kind man.
My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day. I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.
One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house. “You’re a beautiful horse,” he said. “You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty.”
I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I leaned to ware reins (缆绳) and a bit in my mouth, I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Merrylegs. He was very friendly. The other was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I palled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, “My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.”
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.
One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey, John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr. Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. I stopped. “Something is wrong.” I thought, I did not want to go on to the bridge. Mr. Gordon and John wanted me to go on to the bridge. I did not move. Just then a man saw us. “Hey! There! Stop!” he cried.
“What is it ” shouted the Squire.
“The bridge is broken in the middle,” he answered. “If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.” “Thank God!” said the Squire. “Thank you, Beauty!” said John. We turned around and went along the road by the river. For a long time no one said anything. Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
When we returned home, the Squire told Mrs. Gordon:
“We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty!”
That night I was glad, because I was very tired.

I’ve noticed that conversations with my children have started to turn into something that I don’t like. It could be my fault. I don’t always think before l open my mouth.
For example, my kids might call me to tell me about something that’s been bothering them. Then, as soon as they’re finished, I go into mom mode(模式). I can’t help it. It’s my default setting(默认设置). I am the queen of unwanted advice. When I get one of my adult kids on the phone, I become an expert on everything and anything which I’m obviously not.
I want to be part of their lives. More importantly, I want to prevent them from making mistakes that seem so obvious to me. But they just want someone to listen.
I’m hardy alone in this. Over lunch the other day, a friend told me that her son rarely listened to anything she said. I know that feeling all too well. But I’m learning that talking to is not the same as talking with.
Giving advice to children can be full of problems. Though we may see ourselves sharing our wisdom, they see something else. They see a controlling parent who hasn’t accepted the fact that they’re adults with their own thoughts.
They’re not looking for any tips They may not even want an immediate(立刻的)solution to a difficult problem.
What they’re hoping for is a safe place to talk with a person who loves and supports them.
Because of this, I’ve set the goal of becoming a better parent by being a better listener. It’s not an easy task for parents like me who think they’re just being helpful. But I’m trying to do it anyway.

C.It makes her happy. D.It’s the best way of communication.
21.Why does giving advice to children cause problems
A.The advice cannot solve the problem. B.Children can’t learn to be independent.
C.Parents can’t understand the problem. D.Parents and kids want different things.
22.What might the author do in the future
A.Become more helpful. B.Try to be a better listener.
C.Be patient when talking. D.Stop giving any advice.
If Confucius(孔夫子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take adventages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United Sates, at the same time, are racing to lean Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

Long long ago, there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.
One fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter(木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry.
As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself, “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say, “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” Surprising, isn’t it
He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! He opened the door to look around the street—and still no one!
“Oh, I see!” he then said, laughing and shaking his head. “There may be something wrong with my ears.”
“Well, well—to work once more.” He struck another blow hard on the piece of wood.
“Oh, oh! You hurt me!” cried the same far-away little voice.
Mastro Cherry’s mouth opened wide, eyes turned frightened and his tongue hung down on his chin(下巴).” Where did that voice come from This piece of wood has learned to cry like a child Here it is—a piece of common firewood, the same as any other. Yet—might someone be hidden in it If so, the worst for him. I’ll fix him!” With these words, he started to knock it. He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling.
He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes—nothing; ten minutes—nothing.” Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair.” Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We find advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected with high blood pressure(压力) in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week online may develop high blood pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy Bushrow. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin us.” Ms. Cassidy Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regularly(定期地) from their computers or smartphones. 15.词义猜测题。根据“Ginger and I palled a coach together.”可知,这里的coach应该是“四轮大马车”与“coach:3[C] a large closed vehicle with four wheels, pulled by horses, used to carry passengers”相符;根据“‘The bridge is broken in the middle,’ he answered. ‘If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.’”可知,桥中间坏了,如果走上去的话,就会掉进河里,掉进河里就会淹死,所以drown意为“淹死”。与 “drown:1[V]to die because you have been underwater too long and you cannot breathe; to kill sb. in this way”相符。因此是正确的是3; 1。故选B。
16.细节理解题。根据“Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me, ‘My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.’”可知,金吉尔年轻时很不快乐。故选B。

18.推理判断题。根据“We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty!”可知,主人对Black Beauty救了他们的命心怀感激,因此它将得到好的食物和床。故选C。

Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.(很久以前,有一块木头。它不是一块昂贵的木头。只是一块普通的木柴,是放在火上取暖的粗腿之一。)”可知,⑤排第一;根据第三段“for he had heard a little voice say, ‘Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!’ Surprising, isn’t it (因为他听到一个小声音说:“请小心!不要打我那么重!”这让人惊讶,不是吗?)”可知,①是第二;根据第四段“He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one!(他试图找出那个声音是从哪里来的,但他没有看到任何人!)”可知,②是第三;根据第八段“Yet—might someone be hidden in it (可能有人藏在里面?)”可知,④是第四;根据第九段“trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. ‘Well, well-to work once more!’ So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.”可知,马斯特罗·切里笑着唱歌鼓励自己。所以③是第五。所以顺序是⑤ ① ② ④ ③。故选A。

When he opened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the floor.”
根据第一段“It was not an expensive piece of wood. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.”可知,它不是一块昂贵的木头。只是一块普通的木柴,是放在火上取暖的粗腿之一。但是它竟然能够说话,所以他不会被当成一般的木头被对待,选项D“它将被做成木偶”符合题意。故选D。
