When I was in Grade 8, I had a heated argument(争吵)with my classmate,Tony. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
I believed that I was right and he was wrong, and Tony believed that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher, a kind and smart lady, decided to teach us a lesson. She brought us to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large and round object. I could clearly see that it was black. The teacher asked us what color the object was. “ White,” Tony answered. I couldn't believe he said the object was white! “Clearly, it was black!" Another argument started between Tony and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go and stand where Tony was standing and told him to go and stand where I was standing. We changed places, and now she asked me what color the object was. I had to answer, “ White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides-from his side it was white, while from my side it was black. “ Boys, now, what do you say ” The teacher smiled at us. David feels uncomfortable when he looks at the undone homework on his desk. He doesn't finish his homework until the last minute, as a result of surfing the Internet or watching TV.
People can procrastinate(拖延)on almost anything, even enjoyable things such as planning a vacation. Research has shown that the top things young people procrastinate are studying, going to bed and visiting their relatives. “ The main reason for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure,” says Professor Peter Stone.
Some people believe procrastination will make them work more effectively(有效地). But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a job in a certain period of time,” says Stone.“They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer.” Procrastination is usually not good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.
What can be done to stop-procrastinating The best advice is to do what you need to do as quickly as possible. If you want to develop a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes.
Next, find something to help you stop procrastinating. For example, if you want to go to bed at 10:30 p.m., you might set a timed dimmer switch(渐暗开关)at 10 p.m. When the lights are darker, you'll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you've run 3 kilometers, enjoy your favorite ice-cream.

On June 5, 2022, China sent the Shenzhou-14 spaceship into space successfully. Cai Xuzhe, one of the three astronauts in the flight crew, became the first astronaut in Hebei Province to enter space to perform a space mission(任务).
Cai Xuzhe was born in 1976, in the countryside of Shenzhou City, Hengshui, Hebei Province. As a child, every time he heard a plane flying past, he would rush outside and stare up at it till it flew away.
Cai went into an Air Force flight college in his final year at school in 1995. Upon graduation(毕业)from
college, he volunteered to work at an airport short of pilots and with poor condition. He studied and trained his flying skills there assiduously(刻苦地). Cai became a member of China’ s second-generation astronauts in May, 2010.

Why is it that the people you meet when backpacking(背包旅行)seem to be more interesting and outgoing than your friends at home That's my experience, anyway. 16. I've spent time with people of many countries and have found out some interesting things about their cultures. 17.
It's often easy to make new friends while you're traveling, and you'll be able to hang around with them for a few days, until one of you leaves for the next exciting place.
Relationships of this kind are shorter but can be just as strong as friendships back home, because you do so much together in that short time. I often find I like to share things about myself that I'd never say to my close friends. 18.
One thing that's important when you're backpacking is to make sure you carry only basic needs, so your backpack isn't too heavy. I travel “light” these days. One good tip someone gave me is to take old clothes and just throw them away when you move on, instead of washing and waiting for things to dry. 19. You can get mini bottles in supermarkets.
I've discovered that many backpackers visit little places other tourists don't go to, and by using local shops and guest houses, they help those places with much-needed financial(经济上的)support. Most small guest houses allow you to stay for unlimited time, so you can spend as long as you like exploring the local area. 20. So, what are you waiting for ! (By Andy Robinson)
A. It's a great way to learn more about the world.
B. It is safe, I think, because we probably won't meet again, except online.
C. Very often, you'll meet people that are fun to travel with and worth getting to know.
D. Many hostels(小旅社)don’t provide shampoo and shower gel.
E. Backpackers are also kinder to the environment, because they use trains and buses rather than cars.

English is very important to us. Here are two tips of learning English.
Read an English book, newspaper or magazine.
Reading is a necessary part of 1 a new language, so don't forget to practice!
Find something you are really interested in— 2 that's a famous English novel, a copy of The New York Times, or a fashion magazine, and then start working your way through it. If you find the content 3 , you will be less inclined(倾向于······的)to continue with it.
Again, make an active effort to 4 understand what you’re reading: don’t just skim(浏览)over it. Mark any words or phrases that you don’t understand, and then look 5 up in the dictionary.
If you're alone, you could also try reading aloud—this will allow you to improve your reading comprehension(理解力)as well as on your 6 .
Keep a diary in English.
Besides reading and listening comprehension, you should also spend some time 7 your written English skills.
This may be one of the 8 aspect(方面)of your language learning, but it is really important. Writing in English will help you to work on your sentence structure, grammar and spelling.
Try 9 an English diary in which you write down a few sentences every day. It doesn't have to be deeply personal—you could write about the weather, what you ate for dinner or what your plans are for the day.
If you feel comfortable with it, get a native speaker to look over what you've written and check it for any mistakes. This will help you to 10 making the same mistakes over and over again.

To build good relationships with people from other cultures, it is necessary to learn how to communicate well with them. Here are some tips that can help you learn from people from other cultures and share your culture with them.
A little knowledge can go a long way. If you have time (1)____________ meeting with someone from another
culture, try to take time to learn the basic dos and don’ts of that culture. You can find information on this from Internet sources.
If you could not understand someone or think that he or she did not understand you, say something about it. If you think you did not understand what someone meant, try saying something like, “I’m not sure I
understood you. Could we go over that again ” It’s usually better to be upfront(坦率的), since there may be bigger problems later.
Each culture has its own values, beliefs, and prejudice(偏见). Signs of these may come out when communicating with people from other cultures. Basic communication, however, is not the time to judge people based on these differences. (2)____________, respect(尊重)them for what they are. You may even learn something new.
Communicating with people from other cultures can also have its difficulties. Expect that not everything will come out quite right or be fully understood. Be patient with others, and ask them to be patient with you too.
Using non-standard language improperly can make you (3)____________ to understand. Since a language’s slang (俚语)is highly dependent on context(语境), it is best not to use it unless you are quite sure you know how to use it properly.

Dear Frank,
How’s it going You asked me about the ways of learning Chinese in your last letter. Chinese is not only useful but also very interesting. It’s one of the most important languages in the world.
There’ re many ways to learn Chinese. First, you can watch Chinese TV programs or listen to tapes. Second, read Chinese books more. The more you read, the better you’ll learn Chinese. Third, try to write as much as possible in Chinese. Last but not least, you should try to use Chinese every day wherever you go.
I think you’ll learn Chinese well one day. Best wishes to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
