1. The Love Songs of W. E. B. Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers (Harper, $29)
The novel from a celebrated poet, this 800-page work is many things at once: a moving coming-of-age story, an examination of race, and an exploration of American history. Out of curiosity about the secrets in her family, Ailey uncovers stories that trace back to her Native American, Scottish, and enslaved African-American ancestors.

A robot that has been programmed to be a sickly teenager’s “Artificial Friend,” Klara serves as our eyes on a troubling near future in which technological progress is pushing moral boundaries. (2023上·广东深圳·高三校联考阶段练习)Disney movies are the bread and butter of many people’s childhoods. We’ve put together a list of the most unforgettable Disney movies to watch with the kids… or alone.
Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella
This movie was groundbreaking when it was first released in 1997, and not just for casting musical icon Whitney Houston in the role of the fairy godmother. Singer Brandy was the first Black actress to ever play the role of Cinderella on-screen, paving the way for more diversity in Hollywood productions of classic fairytale stories.
Treasure Planet
Released in 2002, this movie remains one of Disney’s hidden gems to this day. A family-friendly sci-fi take on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson book, Treasure Island, this film is full of heart and humour. It is definitely worth a watch and will be just as popular with little girls as it is with little boys, and there are a few hidden jokes just for the grown-ups.
The Fox and The Hound
This animated classic still brings tears to the eyes of some grown adults. The 1981 Disney movie is a surprisingly moving coming of age story that really cuts to the core of what it feels like to grow up and grow apart. Kids will adore the cute animation style, sweet friendship moments and beautiful score. As for the adults, you may want to keep the tissues handy for the final act.
Brother Bear
The last entry on our list comes from 2003 and was one of the last 2D animated films Disney ever released. The kids will love the comedic moments and don’t worry, there are plenty of jokes that will have parents chuckling too. Make sure to keep some tissues nearby though, as there are several moments that will definitely leave you teary.

(2024上·广东深圳·高三统考期末)The famous magazine, Runner’s World, has chosen some of the best, most difficult and enjoyable UK races.
Top of the Wolds 10K Challenge
This 10-km countryside track in Yorkshire is all fun until you take the left turn at Nunburnholme. At this point, you enter a serious uphill part, but thankfully the uphill part only lasts for around 1.5 km. You’ll have about a kilometre to enjoy the views before the way takes you downhill again, and back to where you started in Warter — a cute little village.
Scurry2Bridges Run
This 161-km relay race is divided into 16 parts, so you each run 4 separate parts. Over the course of this day-long adventure, you’ll each run about marathon distance while the workers will drive around for pick-ups and drop-offs at relay exchange points between the start in Dundee and the finish in Edinburgh.
Scafell Sky Race
Here’s a trail run (越野跑) that is not suitable for beginners. With a total of 3,500 m of ascent (上坡路), this is unquestionably one of the hardest events around. Good thing is that the views are beautiful, and that there’s hot food and a bottle of apple juice waiting for you in the end.
Offa’s Dyke 15
The traditional 15-mile distance begins at the Clock Tower in Hay-on-Wye and includes a few hard climbs before finishing in Kington. This year the hard event has added a challenging 10 km around Kington.
31. What do we know about Scurry2Bridges Run
A. It is a 161-mile relay race. B. It has an uphill part about 16 km.
C. It requires runners to run and drive. D. It is a relay race made up of 16 parts.

C. Scafell Sky Race. D. Offa’s Dyke 15.
33. What do the four races have in common
A. They are held in the countryside. B. They are tough but exciting races.

(2024·广东·校联考一模)Critics’ choice: The year’s best novels…
2. Matrix by Lauren Groff (Knopf, $28)
If Matrix were written by anyone else, it would be a hard sell. But Lauren Groff has reimagined the life of 12th-century poet Marie de France so that we can’t help but stay with this royal castoff as she’s sent away, at 17, to run a poor church, which she eventually changes into a shelter for women and a challenge to the male-dominated world.
3. Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro (Knopf, $28)
A robot that has been programmed to be a sickly teenager’s “Artificial Friend,” Klara serves as our eyes on a troubling near future in which technological progress is pushing moral boundaries. But her outsider view allows the author of Remains of the Day, now a Nobel Prize winner, to explore what makes people irreplaceable.
4. Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr (Scribner, $30)
Doerr’s first novel since 2014 covers several hundred years — from 1453 Constantinople to a 22nd-century spaceship escaping from Earth. The book runs 640 pages, but without a wasted word. As engaging as a great bedtime story and as readable as Harry Potter, it’s above all a celebration of the human spirit and its power to dream impossible dreams.
34. Which book is written by a poet
A. The Love Songs of W. E. B. Du Bois. B. Matrix.
C. Klara and the Sun. D. Cloud Cuckoo Land.

C. They are all the author’s first novel. D. The main characters are all humans.

(2023上·广东广州·高三华南师大附中校考阶段练习)Inspired by his mentor Louis Sullivan, an influential figure in the world of modernist architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term “organic architecture” around 1908.
Rather than imitating nature or organic elements within the natural world, organic architecture is more concerned with re-interpretation of nature and harmony between the organic and the built environment. It ensures that the individual elements within buildings are put together to reflect the order within nature. Here are four of the most striking examples.
Casa Milà
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Year of completion: 1910
Architect: Antoni Caudi
Considered the greatest master of Catalan Modernism, Antoni Gaudi was devoted to nature and the Catholic religion. While he originally intended this organic building to have a religious purpose, it is now an apartment building. True to the organic style, it features honey shapes that seemingly emerge from the earth.
Learning Hub at Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Location: Singapore
Year of completion: 2015
Architect: Thomas Heatherwick
Earning the nicknames “dim sum basket building” and “the Hive”, the Learning Hub consists of 12 eight-storey towers arranged around a public atrium (天井). The organic nature of the building extends to its interior with features like gardens that are intended to encourage social interactions and study among students.
Falling Water
Location: Mill Run, Pennsylvania
Year of completion:1939
Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright
A classic of modernism and organic architecture, Falling Water sits on top of a waterfall. Frank Lloyd Wright designed it for the Kaufmann family who—though they had originally hoped for a view of the waterfall-came to love the home.
East Beach Café
Location: Littlehampton, UK
Year of completion: 2007
Architect: Thomas Heatherwick
Located in a seaside area with an industrial history, East Beach Caféresembles a piece of driftwood. Forty meters long, seven meters wide and five meters high, it initially polarized locals, but has since been well-received by the whole community. It was the first building for Thomas Heatherwick who previously was better known as a sculptor.
