Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois. On September 1, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years—since he was 23 years old.
Mr. Durietz has known since he was young that he wanted to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after hearing stories from his father, who fought in World War II. On his mother’s side of the family, he had connections to a famous person from English history.
Mr. Durietz got his first teaching job at Woodland-Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then, he’s been teaching social studies at the same school. He says he loves sharing his knowledge of history with students. “Teaching is never boring,” he says. “Every day is different.”
Things have changed a lot since he began all those years ago. When he started, the only way to make copies was with a “ditto machine”, which used a stinky, purple ink. Mr. Durietz wrote on a blackboard with chalk, and the students used paper textbooks. These days, he and the students use computers and digital whiteboards.
Though technology has changed a lot since he began teaching, Mr. Durietz says the students are still pretty much the same— except that now they have cell phones.
With or without technology, Mr. Durietz has used creative activities to help his students learn. For example, he has organized virtual field trips, geography contests, and special days about the US Civil War. He has even organized fake(假的)elections at school to help his students learn about politics. He says these activities are some of the ones that he and his students enjoyed most.
Mr. Durietz says people who want to be teachers should make sure they are patient with their students. He also encourages them to choose subjects that they care deeply about.
24. What stimulated Paul Durietz’s interest in history
A. The cruelty of wars. B. Stories told by his father.
C. His mother’s encouragement. D. The influence of his teacher.
25. How does Mr. Durietz engage his students in learning
A. By showing his sense of humour.
B. By lecturing about historical events.
C. By taking advantage of creative activities.
D. By using technology extensively in the classroom.
26. What qualities should teachers have according to Mr. Durietz
A. Strong organizational abilities.
B. Excellent technological skills.
C. Patience and a passion for their subject.
D. The ability to multitask and communicate.
27. What’s the best title for the text
A. A Teacher Sets a Record by Teaching for 53 Years

When middle school math teachers completed an online professional development (PD) program that uses artificial intelligence to improve their math knowledge and teaching skills, their students’ math performance improved.
This online professional development program relies on a virtual facilitator to present problems and provide feedback, aiming to enhance teachers’ mastery of knowledge and skills required. It covers why mathematical rules and procedures work and focuses on helping students employ instructional tools and strategies to overcome common struggles.
An experiment was conducted in which 53 middle school math teachers were randomly assigned to either this Al-based professional development or no additional training. On average, teachers spent 11 hours to complete the program. We then gave 1,727 of their students a math test. While students of these two groups of teachers started off with no difference in their math performance, the students taught by teachers who completed the program increased their mathematics performance by 0.18 points on average. This is a statistically significant gain that is equal to the average math performance difference between sixth and seventh graders in the study.
Teachers often have limited access to high-quality PD programs to improve their knowledge and teaching skills. Time conflicts or living in rural areas that are far from in-person professional development programs can prevent teachers from receiving the support they need. Additionally, many existing in-person professional development programs for teachers have little impact on student achievement. AI-based PD programs include opportunities for teachers to observe teaching practices. Teachers also receive real-time support from the program facilitators. The Al-supported virtual facilitator acting as a human instructor gives teachers authentic teaching activities to work on, asks questions and provides real-time feedback and guidance.
Advancements in AI technologies will allow researchers to develop more interactive, personalized learning environments for teachers. More importantly, AI-based PD programs can collect rich, real-time interaction data, which help make programs more effective. Despite billions of dollars being spent each year on professional development for teachers, research suggests that how teachers learn through professional development is not yet well understood.
28. What was the goal of the online professional development program
A. To create widely accessible methods
B. To improve teachers’ teaching skills.
C. To solve students’ common problems.
D. To analyze students’ math performance.
29. How did the students taught by the teachers of the AI-based PD program perform
A. They exhibited statistically significant improvement.
B. They performed even better than the seventh graders.
C. They solved the math problem faster than the average.
D. They started with lower performance but ended higher.
30. How does the author highlight AI-based PD programs in paragraph 4
A. By listing current shortcomings.
B. By clarifying essential concepts.
C. By providing theoretical models.
D. By comparing different trainings.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. There is a demand for larger investments in professional development.
B. AI technologies have helped us figure out how teachers learn in trainings.
C. The expected benefits of teacher training programs have yet to be realized.
D. It is a must for teachers to complete the professional development programs.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. A 31. C
【导语】本文是篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项为中学数学教师提供的在线专业发展计划,该计划利用人工智能来提高他们的数学知识和教学技能,学生的数学成绩得到了提高。

29. 细节理解题。根据第三段“While students of these two groups of teachers started off with no difference in their math performance, the students taught by teachers who completed the program increased their mathematics performance by 0.18 points on average. This is a statistically significant gain that is equal to the average math performance difference between sixth and seventh graders in the study.”(虽然这两组老师的学生开始时在数学成绩上没有差异,但完成课程的老师所教的学生的数学成绩平均提高了0.18分,这是统计的数字上的显著进步,相当于研究中六年级和七年级学生数学成绩的平均差异。)可知,由完成PD项目学习的老师教授的学生,从统计的数字可看出,数学成绩有了明显提高。故选A。
30. 推理判断题。根据第四段“Teachers often have limited access to high-quality PD programs to improve their knowledge and teaching skills. Time conflicts or living in rural areas that are far from in-person professional development programs can prevent teachers from receiving the support they need. Additionally, many existing in-person professional development programs for teachers have little impact on student achievement.”(教师通常无法获得高质量的PD课程来提高他们的知识和教学技能;时间冲突或生活在远离专业发展项目的农村地区,会阻碍教师获得所需的支持;此外,许多现有的教师面对面专业发展计划对学生的成绩影响不大。)可知,该段列举了当前教师提高专业技能所面对的一些现实困难,由此强调了以人工智能为基础的PD项目的优势。故选A。
31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Advancements in AI technologies will allow researchers to develop more interactive, personalized learning environments for teachers. “Who’s next ” asks instructional coach Regina Green, as kids throw vegetables into the pan and the smell of fresh ginger and onions fills the air. “We grew these in our garden,” Jessie Gibson, one of the students, says proudly. Then he measures and pours dry ingredients into a bowl.
“Our family has tried new things because of the program,” says Catie Kelley, whose two children have participated in the FRESHFARM program. “They come home with the recipes,” Kelley says. “It’s fun because it’s things that we don’t usually make at home,” so it has encouraged them to try novel combinations. She says the kids take more of an interest at the grocery store to identify foods they’ve tried in the program.
Dean wants to have the science around healthy eating integrated. A block to scaling up these types of programs is money. The program relies on grants and receives some federal funding, but it’s not enough to expand the program to all the schools that could benefit.
In fact, there are other problems. At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause of death, and unhealthy eating habits are rooted in US culture, it’s unrealistic to think that a cooking curriculum could overcome such a sweeping, societal problem. “We know from years of evidence that we need multiple things to come together to support healthy eating,” says Angela Odoms-Young, a professor of maternal and child nutrition at Cornell University.
Despite these challenges, programs like FRESHFARM can help kids expand their choices by introducing them to new tastes. At first, many kids are turned off by the bitter taste of greens. But through the magic of cooking, processing the onions, and blending in fresh ginger, kids can be inspired.

D. Food is fundamental to life and good health.
35. What does the author think of the program
A. Complex. B. Widespread. C. Effective. D. Easily-operated.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. A 35. C

A “gap year” is a period of time when a student takes a break before going to university, or before a postgraduate course. 36 That helps young people with useful learning experiences, new skills and makes them more independent. (然后我游历了这个国家,甚至还爬上了肯尼亚山。) ”符合上下文语境。选择项中“Kenya”和前句中的“Kenya”相一致。故选F。
40. 根据前文“I worked beforehand to pay for the trip, showing I had good self-motivation and organizational skills, and I was able to get by on very little money. In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economic and social construction, the development of education has reached a new level, but the regional education inequality 56 (attract) people’ s attention ever since.
In my opinion, there are three reasons 57 this phenomenon. The first is the unfair investment (投入). The investment in urban schools is much more than 58 in rural schools. The second is the inequality of educational resources. Some schools have advanced facilities (设施), 59 (provide) their students with a good learning environment. However, some schools only have basic ones. Finally, inequality is also reflected in the allocation of teachers. The teaching 60 (able) of teachers in developed areas is generally better, 61 most of the teachers in less developed areas are 62 (possible) less competent in their work.
So how to solve this problem Firstly, increase investment in education to narrow regional differences. Secondly, the allocation of resources should 63 (reform), and the compulsory education can be allocated as 64 whole. Finally, experienced or highly educated teachers are encouraged 65 (teach) in remote areas.
【答案】56. has attracted 57. for 58. that 59. providing 60. ability 61. while/but 62. possibly 63. be reformed 64. a 65. to teach

Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案】
Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3. I think it’s not a good idea to randomly pair up students for the spoken English training after class. The reasons are as follows.
To begin with, randomly pairing up students may lead to unbalanced language abilities within the groups. This can hinder the progress of students as the more advanced one may dominate the conversation, leaving little room for the other students to improve. Besides, students may feel uncomfortable or less motivated if paired with someone who they don’t get along with or have difficulty communicating with.
My suggestion is to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. This way, everyone can feel more comfortable practicing and improving their spoken English together.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was used to correcting my school essays with some red-ink marks until I met my high school English teacher, Rachel Green. For our writing assignments, Ms. Green would write two-page letters with praise and feedback. I had never had a teacher who was so thoughtful and careful with my writing. I didn’t know what to call it at the time, but reflecting back, she was giving us professional remarks.
I loved writing. It was a hobby. But Ms. Green was determined to make me an author. Her comments were more than just about fixing grammatical errors. She wrote questions to make my essays more detailed; she underlined passages that she agreed with. Her letters always started with how proud she was that I was brave enough to write the truth, how she saw potential in me. I savored (品味) her words—read them over and over.
I needed this care, this recognition. I was the last Watson child to attend Jefferson High School. My sister Cheryl was known for being one of the star writers of the school newspaper. Trisa, another sister, had participated in two study-abroad programs and even helped her peers in Spanish. Dyan, another sister, was good at playing the piano. My sisters were involved in all types of after-school activities cheer-leading, volleyball, track and student government. While I was the little one following them like a shadow. No one noticed my existence except Ms. Green.
Adjusting to high school was challenging, and I felt insecure. On the first day of my high school, a teacher greeted me with a hug, saying, “You have some big shoes to fill.” Then she showed me the trophy (奖杯) case in the hallway. I immediately recognized several: Cheryl, Trisa, and Dyan. I was inspired, yes, but mostly worried. My Spanish was so-so. I got good grades but was not a 4.0 student. I loved music, but I wasn’t good at playing any musical instrument. Worse still, I never dared to share my story in front of my class. I tried to walk in my sisters’ shoes, but they didn’t fit. I tried to follow their steps, but it’s too hard, really.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
One day, Ms. Green invited me to read my new story in front of my class in the writing lesson next week. My heart skipped a beat and disbelief washed over me. I grunted my anxiety about being laughed at. Stroking my hair gently, Ms. Green assured me that my story full of fantasy would win everyone’s heart. Days seemed to be minutes. In a flash, the big day came! My heart beating wildly and palms sweaty, I wobbled onto the platform, took out my manuscript and stammered out my story. At first, someone teased me about my stutter. But as the afternoon sun ca st a gentle glow through the window, gradually everyone got immersed in the fantasy world of my story. No sooner had I finished my story than my class burst into a round of thunderous applause. Eyes sparkling with pride, Ms. Green grinned from ear to ear, saying excitedly to me, “You are bound to be a great author and believe in yourself.”
30 years later, when I did become a best-selling author, I decided to visit Ms. Green. The moment I saw grey-haired Ms. Green, tears of gratitude welled up in my eyes and later I presented my newly-published book to her, adding emotionally, “Ms. Green, had it not been for your encouragement, I wouldn’t be where I am.” She hugged me tightly in her arms, whispering in my ear, “Your own faith and efforts really count. You don’t have to walk in others’ shoes or follow their steps.” The breeze blowing and the birds singing, in her garden we two recalled our golden days in Jefferson High School. Deep in my mind, I knew I could walk in my own shoes and become the best version of myself, the unique version of myself.

Stacy Dean, an official at the US Department of Agriculture, was inspired by a visit to Watkins Elementary, in Washington, D. C. Students grow vegetables in their school garden. They also roll up their sleeves in the school’s kitchen to participate in a FRESHFARM FoodPrints class, which integrates cooking and nutrition education.
32. What inspired Dean during the visit to Watkins Elementary
A. The coach’s skillful performance.
B. Students’ getting more access to nature.
C. The integrated hands-on cooking.
D. Students’ gardening and cooking.
33. How does the program benefit Kelley’s family
A. They pay more attention to healthy eating.
B. They have a more harmonious relation.
C. They show more interest in shopping.
D. They have enriched their recipes.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A. Advocating healthy eating needs joint efforts.
B. A cooking curriculum should be promoted.
C. Nutrition helps put students on a healthy path.
D. Food is fundamental to life and good health.
35. What does the author think of the program
A. Complex. B. Widespread. C. Effective. D. Easily-operated.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
