Passage 1
Can art be used as an alternative(替代物) to traditional methods of getting better Some believe that colour has a direct effect on certain energy of the body and can heal some illness. When we try to explain the reason, however, is it really a cure or does it simply provide a calm and comforting environment for the mind Can art
really heal illness Some say yes. Whether it is the teachings of ancient healing practices or the calming effects of colours, art can heal the mind. And with all of unwanted side effects of traditional medicine, why not turn to art for healing
Valerie Hopkins is an expert who studies this topic. “The artwork distracts(转移注意) the patients, forcing them to think about something other than the pain they may be feeling,” says Vallerie Hopkins. “And with so many people getting sick every day, it is a good idea to surround ourselves with beauty.”
“Art provides an interesting topic for conversation and keeps patients’ minds off their injuries in therapy(治疗) for a few minutes,” says Gleason, a doctor and Valerie’s friend. “It’s also a good way to connect with patients.” Although Gleason is not sure, he does believe that the atmosphere and the bright colours that art adds to his office excite his patients’ sense of well-being and hopefulness.
“I believe that art opens the mind to new possibilities, creates energy and happiness, and provides that soul with comfort,” says Gleason. “We hope that it can help patients to work hard on their treatments. I really believe that their attitude and effort make a huge difference in the results they get.”

Passage 2
You probably know you should say “please” and” thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t
allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to listen your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you
even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when read books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
( ) 1. No one wants to listen to from others MP3 players.
A. a loud sound B. sad stories
C. a long movie D. the words of a song
( ) 2. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music . A. is not enjoyable B. makes us tired
C. is bad for MP3 players D. hurts our ears
( ) 3. If we listen to our MP3 player at a play, .
A. the theatre won’t allow it B. the actors will get angry
C. others won’t hear the play well D. we will miss part of the play
Passage 3
If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain powder. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds you up.
The study also found the younger a person learns a second language, the greater the effect.
A team led by Dr Anrea Mechelli, from University College London, studied a group of Britons who only spoke English. There were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans(扫描检查) showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before learning a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language”, said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and Maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活 的)”, he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world”, explained the scientists.
( ) 1. According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can help you become .
A. healthier B. stronger C. cleverer D. younger
( ) 2. In the past sentence of the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to
.
A. say language is also a kind of physical labour(体力劳动)
B. prove that one needs more practice when he or she is learning a language
C. show the importance of using a language when you learn the language
D. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
Passage 4
Katy Perry became the most popular person on twitter in 2013 and, with
nearly 70 million followers( 拥护者), she was still the most popular person on Twitter in 2014. She is so popular that she is still the Queen of Twitter.
It seems the Grammy Awards just don’t favour Katy Perry—the US singer and songwriter has been nominated(提名 …… 为候选人) 13 times for her music without ever taking home a prize. But Twitter users and music lovers obviously don’t see eye to eye with the award committee.
In an interview with USA Today she shared her secrets to successfully managing social media, giving tips such as “don’t use it just to promote yourself”, “don’t be self-indulgent(放松自己)” and “ignore your haters” .
On social media, Katy doesn’t fight back against every rumour or criticism. Her great music also keeps her style consistent. She sticks to herself and pays no attention to anyone who says otherwise.
This year, the pop star brought her Prismatic World Tour to Guangzhou and Shanghai. Tickets were sold out shortly after they went on sale online.
Katy first made her entrance into the music business in 2008 with her hit single I Kissed a Girl, and she came to international fame with the album Teenage Dream in 2010. Katy was unwilling to join the ranks of the average pop-rock idols, and she developed a controversial(有争议的) style with her colourful dresses and straightforward lyrics. In a conversation with USA Today, Katy offered up this observation: “If you tried to please everyone, you’d have no sense of self. You’d lose yourself in the process of being a people-pleaser and there’d be nothing unique left.”

Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
The new Paris concert hall made news long before it officially opened. Construction delays and financial problems slowed work on the $417 million project, making it the most expensive concert hall to build in the world.
In the French language, the new hall is known as La Philharmonie de Paris( 巴黎爱乐大厅), the home of the Paris Symphony Orchestra(巴黎交响乐
团 ). It looks like a large bowl and can hold 2, 400 people. The seats are well-organized so that every person can enjoy the performance.
Maybe more importantly, it is a brave social experiment. President Laurent Bayle says the aim is to sell classical music to young people, the poor and a mix of ethnic(种族的) and cultural groups and to bridge the gap between Paris and its suburbs.
It is generally believed that the concert hall offers music that is linked to the city’s pricy neighbourhoods
where rich people live. However, the Phiharmonie is not located in the center of Paris. Instead, it is in the north-eastern part of Paris called Parc de la Villette( 拉维列特公园). The park is a peaceful hideaway in an area filled with working class families.
Some people wonder how it can succeed when other European art centers are closing—because the Philharmonie is moving forward. The spokesman, Philippe Provensal, takes visitors on tours of the building. They walk past an exhibit about pop music star David Bowie(大卫·鲍威,英国摇滚歌手). There are also classmates where people can learn to play any number of musical instruments. The cost of a class is only a few dollars per person. On the top of the building, visitors can see a lot—not of Paris, but of the neighbourhoods around it. To reach people in these areas, the concert hall sets up children’s orchestras in the neighbourhoods around it. To reach people in these areas, the concert hall sets up children’s orchestras in the neighbourhoods and keeps ticket prices low for its performances.
“It is not necessary to have years of training to play an instrument. Music should be available to everyone in the best of conditions,” says Mr. Proversal.

Passage 1
Can art be used as an alternative(替代物) to traditional methods of getting better Some believe that colour has a direct effect on certain energy of the body and can heal some illness. When we try to explain the reason, however, is it really a cure or does it simply provide a calm and comforting environment for the mind Can art really heal illness Some say yes.

C. others won’t hear the play well D. we will miss part of the play

“Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world”,
(

Passage 4
Katy Perry became the most popular person on twitter in 2013 and, with nearly 70 million followers( 拥 护 者), she was still the most popular person on Twitter in 2014. She is so popular that she is still the Queen of Twitter.
It seems the Grammy Awards just don’t favour Katy Perry—the US singer and songwriter has been nominated( 提名 …… 为候选人) 13 times for her music without ever taking home a prize.

It is generally believed that the concert hall offers music that is linked to the city’s pricy neighbourhoods where rich people live. However, the Phiharmonie is not located in the center of Paris. Instead, it is in the north-eastern part of Paris called Parc de la Villette(拉维列特公园).
Proversal.
