B
About five years ago I started at a new school when my family moved to Iowa.I was just a little excited, but I worried I would never fit in with the other sixth graders.
Lucy,a girl in my class, who I thought was not ready for change, didn’t like me from the start. In fact,I was pretty sure she hated me.I would ask her a question, and I could tell she thought I was a total fool.

My teacher made us sit by each other for the last term.Lucy was horrified (惊骇的).I didn’t wear make-up (化妆品),and I didn’t wear those terrible bell-bottom pants.I didn’t exactly look like the coolest girl. But,I kept smiling at her, though she rolled her eyes, and I kept telling her she looked beautiful, even when she was angry.
Finally,Lucy let me talk to her, even in sight of her “cool” friends. She started telling me how beautiful I looked.I still remember that the first time when she smiled at me saying that, and I smiled right back, telling her thanks. Lucy invited me over to her house for a party, and talked to me all the time instead of her other friends.Lucy, the girl who hated me,called me her best friend. After that,we still were good friends a whole year later.

I may have moved to Arizona after that, but I will never forget Lucy. It’s funny — I still remember her birthday. She was a great friend. And to think, she considered me her enemy at first.Though it was hard, and it felt like I was wasting my time, and losing my dignity (尊严),I still smiled at Lucy when she made fun of me.I’m not stupid.I didn’t think she was right in doing those things, but I still put up with it.And we became great friends.
About two weeks ago,I read a sentence by Abraham Lincoln:“Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends with them ” Immediately,I smiled, thinking of Lucy. That sentence just reminded me how great it was for me to change Lucy into my friend in that state of Iowa five years ago.

When a child is told he is “uncool”, it can be very painful. He may say he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose. But these are simple ways to handle sadness by pretending it’s not there.
Helping a child feel better in school has to be careful. If you say,“Why are you worried about what other children think about you It doesn’t matter!” Children know that it does matter.Instead,an active way may be the best. You could say,“I’m going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school.”

If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him.The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him.A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child,or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.

There are things that parents can do at home, too.Be friendly when your child brings others home to play.Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider “super”.When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then,if he has good qualities,he can start to build real friendship of his own.

4.D 根据第二段最后一句话“Together, the three of them Harry out of the water as quickly as possible.”
7.A 根据下文“Together, the three of them Harry out of the water as quickly as possible.”

14.A 根据上文“I am to Sarah”可知Harry对他的狗是非常感激的,结合该句中的“in a way that every loves:with food”可知,这句话是在描述Harry表达感激的方式,所以他用食物的方式向他的好朋友表示感激之情符合语境。

My 10-year-old Donna said,“Mum,I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow ” Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure, honey, that sounds great,” I said, thinking back to my own best friend,Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights,New York.We met at the age of 10,too.Like my daughter,I was shy,but Lillian drew me out.She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile.

In senior high school,Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days.“I’ll be back soon,” she told me.But three days later,Lillian’s sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn’t come out any more.Soon,my family moved to New Jersey. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Donna brought her new friend home.“Hi,Mrs.Loggia,” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she shot me a big smile. “My name is Laura.”

My daughter’s new friend was so much like Lillian.I was still puzzled(迷惑) when Laura’s mum came to pick her up later that afternoon.I opened the door to let her in.“Judy!” she cried.“It’s me,Lillian’s sister, from Washington Heights.” Yes,my daughter’s friend looked familiar. She was Lillian’s niece(侄女).

Ⅱ.七选五
Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They have school friends, work friends, sports friends and neighborhood friends. These friendships are based on common interests. 1 Because American society is one of rapid changes,American friendships develop quickly.
People from the United States may at first seem friendly. 2 They exchange information about their family, hobbies and work. They may smile warmly and say,“Have a nice day” or “See you later”.But American friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship.
So we should learn how Americans view friendship to help us avoid misunderstandings.

1.Be willing to take the first step.Don’t wait for them to approach you. Americans in another country may not know you can speak English. They may be embarrassed if they can’t speak your language.
2. 3 Ask them where they’re from, why they came to your country, etc. Remember to be careful to avoid personal questions about age, salary and appearance.
3.Show an interest in their culture, their country or their job.Americans like to talk about themselves!

4.Invite them to join you for dinner or just for coffee or tea.Try to set a specific time.Americans sometimes make general invitations like “Let’s get together sometime”.Often this is just a way to be friendly. 4
5. 5 Maybe they’re just being friendly. But maybe they do want to be your good friends. It will take time to tell. After all, there are some differences between the two cultures.

A.Don’t expect too much at first.
B.It is not always a real invitation.
C.Use small talk to open the conversation.
D.Americans often chat easily with strangers.
E.Don’t pay a visit to Americans without being asked.

根据下文“Ask them where they’re from...salary and appearance.”

4.B 根据上文“Americans sometimes make general invitations like ‘Let’s get together sometime’.Often this is just a way to be friendly.”

A
What an athlete eats before, during and after exercise is important for comfort and performance during exercise. While eating soon before exercise doesn’t provide what is needed for the activity,it can prevent hunger during exercise. What is needed for muscles is stored in the days before exercise. This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.

Exercising on a full stomach is not a good idea.Food that remains in your stomach during an event may cause stomach upset. To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.
If you have an early morning race or exercise,it’s best to get up early enough to eat your pre-exercise meal.If not,you should try to eat or drink something easily digestible about 20-30 minutes before the event. The closer you are to the time of your event, the less you should eat.You can have a liquid(液体) meal closer to your event than a solid(固体) meal because your stomach digests liquids faster.

Because glucose(葡萄糖) is the energy source for most exercise,a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates(碳水化合物) and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.
Planning is necessary if you are competing in an all-day event, such as track meets or other tournaments. You should plan ahead and prepare meals and snacks that you have tried before.Do not experiment with something new on the event day.

1.To prepare for the next exercise, you should .
A.eat soon before exercise
B.eat during exercise
C.eat after exercise
D.eat nothing at all

根据第一段的最后一句“This is one reason that the post-exercise meal is very important to recovery and being ready for the next exercise.(这就是运动后的饮食对恢复和为下一次运动做好准备非常重要的一个原因。)”

2.Fully digesting a meal before an event may .
A.cause stomach upset
B.give enough energy and stomach discomfort
C.give comfort and good performance during exercise
D.lead to hunger during exercise
根据第二段中的“To make sure you have enough energy, yet reduce stomach discomfort, you should allow a meal to fully digest before the start of the event.(为了保证你有足够的能量,同时减少胃部不适,你应该在活动开始前让一顿饭完全消化。)”

3.What can we learn from the passage
A.You’d better have your pre-exercise meal after an early morning race.
B.Fruit and bread are high in glucose and easy to digest.
C.Planning is not necessary for track meets.
D.You can try something new for your meals on the event day.
根据第四段的“Because glucose is the energy source for most exercise,a pre-exercise meal should include foods that are high in carbohydrates and easy to digest. This includes foods such as fruit, bread, energy bars and drinks.(因为葡萄糖是大多数运动的能量来源,所以运动前的一餐应该包括碳水化合物含量高、容易消化的食物。这包括水果、面包、能量棒和饮料等食物。)”可知,水果和面包的葡萄糖含量高,容易消化。

Although onions taste delicious, watering eyes come with the process when you cut them up.Thankfully,Good Housekeeping has suggested some tips to prevent yourself from crying while trying to cut up an onion.
According to the findings from the Institute, putting onions in a fridge 30 minutes before cutting can prevent the annoying hurt,as the cold stops tear-jerking(催泪的) gas from being produced.
Another way to reduce the gas released by the onion is to put it in water for a while.Good Housekeeping recommends:“Cut the end off the onion and then put it straight into a bowl of water. The water will draw out the acid making you tear up less when you cut it.”

When an onion grows,it mixes with sulfur(硫) in the soil to create a special mineral acid. When the onion is cut into pieces,it reacts and creates a gas.As it reaches your face, this annoying gas causes the eyes to produce tears.
The root is where the gases are most concentrated,so it is recommended that this part of the onion be left on as you cut it to avoid uncomfortable eyes. Do this by cutting the vegetable in half down the middle to create a flat surface. Then, place the onion with its flat surface down and cut it towards the root.
Also,to reduce the gas’s effect on your eyes, cut it next to a window or near a fan so the gas is blown away from your face. And take care to use a sharp knife;this will make it easier to move through the vegetable, causing fewer cells to be broken and less gas to be released as a result.

5.From the fourth paragraph, what happens when the onion is cut up
A.Some acid mineral is lost.
B.The tear mixture is created.
C.The sulfur inside it pours out.
D.A chemical reaction produces a gas.

根据第四段中的“When the onion is cut into pieces,it reacts and creates a gas.”

Between school, homework, sports, your after-school job,and hanging out with friends,it may feel like there’s no time for healthy eating. And when you have time, you may simply eat snacks like potato chips. 1 In fact,if you have a busy schedule,it’s even more important to eat healthy foods that give you the energy you need to keep going.
2 For example, you may feel hungry in a long afternoon of classes or during your swim meet.Knowing how much food your body needs to satisfy your hunger is important.A few walnuts(核桃) are great brain food before you sit down to do your maths homework. 3

Healthy snacking is important to you.During teenage years, the body needs more nutrients to grow.Snacks are a great way to satisfy your hunger and get all nutrients your body needs. 4 Do not eat foods with lots of added sugar like candy bars or soda. That’s because eating these foods may help you stop feeling hungry for a moment, but they are bad for your health in the long term.
Choosing healthy snacks means shopping wisely. 5 We may find “all natural” on the side of a package but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s nutritious. For example,“all natural” juice drinks can be filled with sugar, which means they’ll make you fat easily and give you little nutrition.

A.It’s natural to feel hungry at certain times.
B.Healthy snacking doesn’t have to be boring.
C.But you need to pay attention to what you eat.
D.If you’re really feeling hungry, don’t pay no attention to it.
E.But it is possible to treat yourself to a healthy snack.
F.But a whole bag only makes you put on weight easily!

One winter Sunday,my little sister,Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever.We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside,we smiled lovingly at him over our meal.We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school.A lot of kids went past our house,so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight,we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone!We only found a broken stick here,a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere.Worst of all,the snowman’s once-proud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened We were both astonished and angry. But then,we were only kids, who wouldn’t have anything taking away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing:Our snowman would rise again. So we rebuilt him.

The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪).For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we’d return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning,we had a plan.We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom,filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning,it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set,and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

_______________________________________________________________

On Monday morning, hiding behind the window,we soon saw what we were waiting for.It turned out that there were three of them from our school. They sneaked up on our snowman and laughed.Taking their places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliver powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard ice block of the base, sneers turned into shock, then agony and tears. They shouted and cursed, gritting their teeth and stomping their feet.

Seeing their pained look,we couldn’t help laughing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding their damaged feet.We just couldn’t contain our happiness and excitement. With a hearty laugh,we came out of hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house.“An eye for an eye!Justice done!” We yelled behind them. And that was the end of our problems with the snowman bullies.Ever since then, our snowman was kept guarded and in shape until it happily melted into spring water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood memories.(共35张PPT)

When I was in middle school,I met my English literature teacher, who was new to teaching. She was only 22 but she always did her best to make learning fun.She would give us a personalized mini notebook for every student’s birthday.I had this simple small notebook. She had filled the first couple pages telling me how much she loved having me as a student, how far she knew I would go,and other affirmations. It seemed small but for a 13-year-old child who had a hard home life,it made all the difference.

In my junior year of high school,in one English class,we were discussing a story when one student called Carl made a point. The teacher was dismissive(不以为然的) and said Carl was wrong. The next day,the teacher said he was wrong to dismiss what Carl said so quickly.“Let’s take a look at that again.” After the discussion,it became clear that Carl’s point was indeed unreasonable, but I was impressed when the teacher publicly owned his mistake and did what he should.

When I was in grade one,my mother gave me one really awful haircut. On the first day back at school, the kids picked on me horribly,so I ran out and hid.The headmaster found me and took me back.He asked me to wait outside for a minute while he talked to the class. The next day,we had an assembly(展会) with the entire school and he walked up on the stage with his head shaved completely bald and criticized the bad-mannered behaviour.
Twenty years later,I ran into him at the local college.I thought he didn’t remember me,but he said my name and the event. The man was and is a hero in my eyes.

On a school trip to New York, our school had us wear name tags(牌) with our school name on it.Since all the attractions we visited were popular with school groups, the tags let the teachers know we should be with our group. If any of us separated from the group, teachers would quickly call us back.
Some students had tried to hide or throw away their name tags to avoid this,so our head teacher—a very strict lady—said that anyone found without the name tag would have to spend the rest of the trip staying with her at all times and then have a month’s worth of lockdown(禁闭) when we got back.

While we were all on a ferry(渡船),we were allowed to go around. While playing with friends,I didn’t realize the thing flying down to the water below was my name tag until it was too far to reach.I started to freak out at once.I had never got into trouble at school before or had even a single punishment, and I would possibly face a month’s worth of lockdown! After thinking for a moment,I finally decided to just tell the head teacher what had happened.

I went to the head teacher and explained very nervously to her.Instead of shouting at me,she took out another name tag and handed it to me.She said,“I have prepared several more name tags in case something unexpected happens.” Then she smiled at me,“Did you think you would get lockdown Don’t worry, and that’s just for the trouble-makers in order to stop them losing it on purpose. I believe you’re a good kid.Don’t be worried about this. But be careful later.” When I heard these words, tears came to my eyes. What a kind teacher she is!

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence,Italy, while her wealthy English parents were travelling in Europe. As a child, she travelled to many places with her family and learned how to speak several languages.
When Nightingale was 17,she told her family that she was going to help sick people. Her parents did not approve, but Nightingale was determined.
She travelled to hospitals all over Europe. She saw that doctors were working too hard. She saw that patients died because they did not get enough care.Nightingale felt that women could be doing more to help doctors take care of sick people.

Nightingale knew that in order for nurses to do more, they needed special training in how to take care of sick people.Nightingale went to a hospital in Germany to study nursing. Then she returned to London and became the head of a group of women called Gentlewomen During Illness. These women cared for sick people in their homes.
In 1854,England was fighting a war with Russia.War reporters wrote about the terrible conditions in the hospitals that cared for the wounded.People demanded that something be done about it.A leader of the government asked Florence Nightingale to take some nurses into the war hospitals. So,in November 1854,Nightingale finally got to work in a hospital.

She took along 38 nurses whom she had trained herself.

I can’t remember if I was nine or ten years old.I do remember that it was the last day of the Boy’s Camp. 1 It hurt a lot.The day before for some silly reason I had gotten into a fight with another boy.
It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to pull us apart and call it a draw, but in truth I had lost. 2 We hadn’t talked since the fight either but only looked coldly at each other from across the room.

3 I knew my mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother,me,and our friends.Soon I saw her walking up the sidewalk towards the steps of our cabin. She had been bringing these pizzas to us every Boy’s Camp for years now.I saw her smile as my brother and his friends all took the big pieces. 4 I thanked her with a smile and started to eat when I saw my fight opponent standing off to the side by himself. In that moment something moved in my heart. 5 We talked and laughed and ate. And for some reason unknown to me at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before.

1.F 根据下文“It hurt a lot.The day before for some silly reason I had gotten into a fight with another boy.”
2.G 根据上文“It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to pull us apart and call it a draw, but in truth I had lost.”

3.A 根据后文“I knew my mom was bringing some of her homemade pizzas as a treat for my brother,me,and our friends.”
4.E 根据下文“I thanked her with a smile and started to eat...”
5.D 根据下文“We talked and laughed and ate.And for some reason unknown to me at the time, the pizza tasted better than ever before.”

2.A 根据下文的“I picked journalism.This I had to go to interview a true newspaper reporter.”
3.D 根据空后的“I had to go to interview a true newspaper reporter”可知,选择新闻业意味着(meant)“我”得去采访一名真正的记者。

5.D 根据下文中的“‘Never go anywhere without a pen and paper.’”

12.C 根据空前的“journalism did something to me”可知,新闻工作对“我”有特殊的意义,这是“我”的天性。be in one’s blood意为“对某事物生来就有兴趣或天赋”。

what is going on意为“发生了什么事”。
