Passage 1
Scott Kelly visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). He shared his experiences in space with students.
Kelly graduated from college with an engineering degree in 1987. He was later accepted into Navy flight school. In 1995, Kelly sent his application to NASA to become an astronaut. He thought, “If I’m going to fail at something, I might as well just fail at something that I think I can’t achieve.” That’s what Kelly told the audience at UW. To his surprise, he landed an interview.
From 1999 to 2016, Kelly took part in four space missions. His first was a repair trip to the Hubble Space Telescope. On his second trip, in 2007, he was the mission commander. Kelly finished his third mission in 2011. It was a five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA was interested in the idea of sending people to space for an even longer period of time. The space agency then chose Kelly to set off on a 340-day mission to the ISS. The trip became one of the longest time ever spent in space.
The main purpose of the mission was to study how the human body responds to a long space flight. Space weakens your bones and muscles because your body doesn’t have to use them much in low gravity. That s why astronauts work out for at least two hours a day. Eyesight is also greatly affected by space travel. Kelly says that he wears glasses to correct his vision because of his time spent in space.
There’s still a lot to learn about the effects of space flights on the body. And there’s always work to be done in space. The more people who get interested in space, the more steps we can take toward a possible moon base, or even a Mars base.
For kids desiring to become astronauts, Kelly has some advice, “Choose something that you like, because if you like it, you’ll do better at it”.
1. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean
A. Kelly was very afraid of failure.
B. Kelly was sure that he would be rejected.
C. Kelly didn’t really like to be an astronaut.
D. Kelly was very confident about the application.
2. How long did Kelly’s fourth mission last
A. Five months. B. About half a year. C. Around a year. D. Two years.
3. What can we learn about the effects of space flights
A. Wearing glasses in space can avoid them.
B. They disappear when astronauts get home.
C. Professional exercise can reduce them.
D. Researchers have already overcome them.
4. What may Kelly agree with according to the last paragraph
A. Interest is the best teacher. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. No way is impossible to courage. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
B 2. C 3. C 4. A
根据画线句前内容“He was later accepted into Navy flight school. In 1995, Kelly sent his application to NASA to become an astronaut(后来他被海军飞行学校录取。1995年,凯利向美国宇航局递交了成为一名宇航员的申请。).”可知,他向NASA递交了想成为宇航员的申请,结合划线句子后的“To his surprise, he landed an interview.(令他吃惊的是,他得到了一次面试机会。)”可知,令他惊讶的是,他成功得到了一个面试的机会,由此可推断,“Kelly觉得有可能会被NASA拒绝”,但最终得到面试机会,所以感到很惊讶。故选B项。
2. 细节理解题。 根据第三段“Kelly finished his third mission in 2011. It was a five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). NASA was interested in the idea of sending people to space for an even longer period of time. The space agency then chose Kelly to set off on a 340-day mission to the ISS.(凯利在2011年完成了他的第三次任务。它在国际空间站(ISS)停留了五个月。美国国家航空和宇宙航行局对把人送到太空停留更长时间的想法很感兴趣。美国宇航局随后选择凯利前往国际空间站执行为期340天的任务。) ”可知,在Kelly完成为期5个月的太空站之旅后,NASA对派人到太空更长时间感兴趣,太空局选择Kelly去太空站执行为期340天的任务,即:第四次航天任务为期一年左右,故选C项。
3. 细节理解题。根据第四段“Space weakens your bones and muscles because your body doesn’t have to use them much in low gravity. That s why astronauts work out for at least two hours a day.(太空会削弱你的骨骼和肌肉,因为你的身体不需要在低重力下使用它们。这就是为什么宇航员每天至少要锻炼两个小时。)”可知,在太空几乎不用骨骼与肌肉,很容易削弱它们,所以每天需要至少两小时的锻炼,由此可知,专业的锻炼可以减弱太空旅行造成的对骨骼和肌肉的影响。故选C项。
4. 推理判断题。 根据最后一段“For kids desiring to become astronauts, Kelly has some advice, “Choose something that you like, because if you like it, you’ll do better at it”(对于渴望成为宇航员的孩子,凯利有一些建议:“选择你喜欢的东西,因为如果你喜欢它,你就会做得更好。”)” 故选A项。
Passage 2
Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth’s vital resource. By using advanced microwave radar technology it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It’s really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet’s surface.
The major mission is to explore how oceans help to minimize climate change by absorbing atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide in a natural process. Oceans are estimated to have absorbed more than 90% of the extra heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gases Swot will scan the seas from the orbit and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevations (高度) around smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much of the oceans’ decrease of heat and carbon is believed to occur. “Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key question: What is the turning point at which oceans start releasing, rather than absorbing, huge amounts of heat back into the atmosphere and speed up global warming, rather than limiting it,” said Nadya Shiffer, Swot’s program scientist.
By comparison, earlier studies of water bodies relied on data of rivers or oceans taken at specific points, or from satellites that can only track measurements along a one-dimensional line, requiring scientists to fill in data gaps through extrapolation (外推法). Thanks to the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly than was previously possible.
“Rather than giving us a line of elevations, it’s giving us a map of elevations, and that’s just a total game changer,” said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swot freshwater science leader.
5. What does the underlined expression “vital resource” in the first paragraph refer to
A. Technology. B. Climate. C. Oceans. D. Water.
6. What is the major mission of Swot
A. To explore the influences of greenhouse gases.
B. To explain the consequence of global warming.
C. To identify the causes of water absorbing heat and CO2.
D. To study the mechanism of oceans influencing climate.
7. What makes it possible for Swot to measure precisely
A. The high-definition computer.
B. Advanced radar technology.
C. The three-dimensional image.
D. An accurate map of elevations.
8. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. A Solution to Climate Change
B. A Breakthrough in Space Travel
C. First Global Water Survey from Space
D. The Successful Launch of Swot Satellite
D 6. D 7. B 8. C
根据画线短语下文“By using advanced microwave radar technology it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It’s really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet’s surface.(通过使用先进的微波雷达技术,它将收集全球90% 以上的海洋、湖泊和河流的高清晰度表面测量数据。这真的是第一次观察到地球表面几乎所有的水)”和画线短语所在句子“Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth’s vital resource.(Swot卫星计划于周四上午发射,对地球的vital resource进行全面调查)”可知,Swot卫星通过使用先进的微波雷达技术,收集全球90%以上的海洋、湖泊和河流的高清晰度表面测量数据,然后对这些水资源进行调查,由此可推知,画线短语“vital resource”指的是下文提到的“water (水)”。故选D。
根据第二段中“The major mission is to explore how oceans adjust climate change by absorbing atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide in a natural process.(其主要任务是探索海洋如何通过自然过程吸收大气热量和二氧化碳来调节气候变化)”可知,Swot卫星的主要任务是探索海洋如何通过自然过程吸收大气热量和二氧化碳来调节气候变化,即研究海洋如何影响气候变化。故选D。
根据倒数第二段中“Thanks to the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly than was previously possible.(多亏了雷达仪器,Swot可以在地球的大范围内扫描云层和黑暗。这使得科学家能够精确地绘制二维地图,无论天气如何,无论何时,覆盖大面积地理区域的速度比以前快得多)”可知,先进的雷达技术使得Swot能够精确测量。故选B。
8. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth’s vital resource. By using advanced microwave radar technology it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It’s really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet’s surface.(Swot卫星计划于周四上午发射,对地球的重要资源进行全面调查。

Passage 1
America was where all my mother’s hopes lay. My mother believed one could be anything he wanted to be in America. “You can be a prodigy(神童), too,” my mother told me when I was nine. “You can be best at anything.” We didn’t immediately pick the right kind of prodigy. At first my mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We’d watch Shirley’s old movies on TV as though they were training films. My mother would poke my arm and say, “Ni kan”—You watch.
Soon after my mother got this idea about Shirley Temple, she took me to a beauty training school and put me in the hands of a student who could barely hold the scissors without shaking. Instead of getting big fat curls, I emerged with an uneven mass of crinkly black fuzz.
In fact, in the beginning, I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, trying each one on for size. I was a dainty ballerina girl standing by the curtains, waiting to hear the right music that would send me floating on my tiptoes. I was Cinderella stepping from her pumpkin carriage with sparkly cartoon music filling the air.
In all of my imaginings, I was filled with a sense that I would soon become perfect. My mother and father would adore me. I would be beyond reproach(责备). I would never be annoyed by anything. Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the Formica kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children she had read and a dozen other magazines she kept in a pile in our bathroom. My mother got these magazines from people whose houses she cleaned. She would look through them all, searching for stories about remarkable children.
The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states and even most of the European countries. A teacher was quoted as saying the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.
“What’s the capital of Finland ” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.
All I knew was the capital of California, because Sacramento was the name of the street we lived on in Chinatown. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most foreign word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to pronounce “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.
The tests got harder — multiplying numbers in my head, finding the queen of hearts in a deck of cards, trying to stand on my head without using my hands, predicting the daily temperatures in Los Angeles, New York, and London.
And after seeing my mother’s disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror and when I saw only my face staring back — and that it would always be this ordinary face--I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high-pitched (尖锐的) noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror.
And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me — because I had never seen that face before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be what I’m not.
1. Why did the mother and the girl watch Shirley Temple’s old movies on TV
A. Because the mother was a fan of Shirley Temple
B. Because the girl resembled Shirley Temple in appearance.
C. Because Shirley Temple’s hairstyle was very popular among children.
D. Because the mother wanted her daughter to be a Chinese Shirley Temple.
2. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the tests the girl did every night
A. She got through the tests painfully.
B. She felt confident and finished them smoothly.
C. She failed the tests and began to lose confidence.
D. She made preparations for tests to please her mother.
3. What does the underlined sentence in the passage mean
A. The mother was disappointed and gave up her daughter.
B. The mother expected her daughter to know the right answer.
C. The answers were more than one and the mother checked them.
D. The mother was not sure about the answer and wanted to confirm it.
4. What might happen after the last paragraph
A. The girl might do what she really likes.
B. The girl might do whatever her mother asks.
C. The girl might try her best to become successful.
D. The mother might change her attitude and listen to her daughter.
D 2. C 3. B 4. A
根据第一段中“At first my mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. We’d watch Shirley’s old movies on TV as though they were training films.(起初,我妈妈认为我可以成为中国的秀兰·邓波儿。我们会在电视上看雪莉演的老电影,就像看训练电影一样)”可知,妈妈和女孩在电视上看秀兰·邓波儿的老电影是因为妈妈希望女儿成为中国的秀兰·邓波儿,让女儿通过看电影来接受训练。故选D项。
2. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“And after seeing my mother’s disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror and when I saw only my face staring back — and that it would always be this ordinary face — I began to cry.
根据最后一段中“I looked at my reflection, blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won’ts. I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be what I’m not.(我看着自己的影子,眨了眨眼睛,以便看得更清楚。那个盯着我看的女孩很生气,很强势。这个女孩和我是一样的。我有了新的想法,任性的想法,或者更确切地说,是充满了很多不愿意的想法。我不会让她改变我,我向自己保证。我不会成为我不是的样子)”可推知,女儿的遭受挫折后重新审视了自己,接受了真正的自我,决定不再受妈妈的摆布。接下来,她要去做自己真正喜欢做的事。故选A项。
Passage 2
Going home on break is always a bittersweet feeling. At some point during the semester, college may have started to feel like a second home.
I’m lucky since I live locally. When I tell people that I live so close to home, they often ask, “Why are you living on campus if your house is so close to the school ” And the answer was always a sense of community.
Yes, I’ve heard of the horror stories of some commuters who weren’t able to form as much of a bond with peers as people who were living on campus. But to me, everyone in my residential hall was like a big family. Of course, I was closer to some people more than others, but we would all support each other.
College is often seen as a place where everyone tends themselves until they make it to graduation, where people compete for that internship(实习) or research position that basically everyone in your major is aiming for. But here, it’s more common to see people studying with each other during reading period until 3 a.m., or bringing Starbucks to their friends.
Like most things, there are negative things about independence as well. Staying at home for the longer break reminded me of every little thing that my mom would do for me and my siblings. I don’t know about you, but my siblings often scream and run around until their bedtime. Sometimes, I wish I was back at my dorm or the library reading a book. Instead, I have to plug my ears to try to not let them drive me crazy when my parents are at work. However, at other times, their enthusiasm really does help relieve my stress after a week filled with exams and labs right before spring break.
Being home really is a double-edged sword. It’s comforting to be around people you’ve known for your entire life, but it also comes with the sacrifice (牺牲) of some of the things you built into your daily routine in college. But what can I say, it’s always good to go back home--nothing beats Chinese food.
5. What makes the author choose to live in the school
A. A sense of curiosity. B. Living away from parents.
C. A sense of community. D. Longing for independence.
6. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Everyone provides for themselves on campus.
B. Students study for internship or research position.
C. These moments make living on campus refreshing.
D. Students study with each other during reading period.
7. Why does the author mention his life at home in paragraph 5
A. To remind that every little thing counts in daily life.
B. To confirm independence has some negative effects.
C. To prove being home really is a double-edged sword.
D. To inform college is where everyone cares for themselves.
8. What is the best title for the text
A. Campus times. B. On going home.
C. The story of going home. D. Unforgettable college life.
C 6. D 7. C 8. B
根据第二段中“I’m lucky since I live locally. When I tell people that I live so close to home, they often ask, “Why are you living on campus if your house is so close to the school ” And the answer was always a sense of community.(我很幸运,因为我住在当地。当我告诉别人我住得离家很近时,他们经常会问:“如果你的家离学校这么近,你为什么要住在校园里 ”答案总是一种社区意识)”可知,是一种社区意识让作者选择住在学校。故选C项。
6. 细节理解题。根据第四段“College is often seen as a place where everyone tends themselves until they make it to graduation, where people compete for that internship or research position that basically everyone in your major is aiming for. But here, it’s more common to see people studying with each other during reading period until 3 a.m., or bringing Starbucks to their friends.(大学通常被看作是一个每个人在毕业前都很关心自己的地方,在那里,人们竞争实习或研究职位,而这些职位基本上是你专业的每个人都想要的。但在这里,更常见的是人们在阅读期间互相学习到凌晨3点,或者给朋友带星巴克)”结合选项,可知D项“Students study with each other during reading period.(学生们在阅读期间互相学习)”正确。故选D项。
7. 推理判断题。根据第五段中“Like most things, there are negative things about independence as well. However, at other times, their enthusiasm really does help relieve my stress after a week filled with exams and labs right before spring break.(像大多数事情一样,独立也有消极的一面。
根据第一段“Going home on break is always a bittersweet feeling. At some point during the semester, college may have started to feel like a second home.(放假回家总是一种苦乐参半的感觉。在这个学期的某个时候,大学可能开始感觉像第二个家)”和最后一段“Being home really is a double-edged sword. It’s comforting to be around people you’ve known for your entire life, but it also comes with the sacrifice of some of the things you built into your daily routine in college. But what can I say, it’s always good to go back home — nothing beats Chinese food.(回家真的是把双刃剑。和你认识了一辈子的人在一起是令人欣慰的,但这也伴随着你在大学里建立的日常生活的一些牺牲。但我能说什么呢,回家总是好的——没有什么比中国菜更好的了)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者觉得大学期间放假回家总是一种苦乐参半的感觉。所以B项“On going home.(回家)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。
Passage 3
My wife’s birthday falls at the beginning of spring when the winter chill still hangs over the approaching warmth.
On that day, I came home from work, stopped her from entering the kitchen and asked her to dine out. “Has Lily called ” she asked. I shook my head. The atmosphere at the dinner was oppressive. My wife kept glancing at her phone, showing no signs of appetite.
Early the next morning, my wife got up, dark rings encircling her eyes. We only have one child. When Lily still lived at home, every year when her birthday approached, we would start the grand preparations days in advance. And after she left for college, my wife would call her countless times from morning till night. How could she ignore all our love and utterly forget her mum’s birthday On the way to work, I texted Lily, “Your mum didn’t sleep well last night.”
Another day concluding, we were about to go to bed when there was a sound of a key rattling in the lock. In came our daughter, face red with cold, birthday cake in hand. “Sorry, Mum. Happy birthday!” she said, tears welling up. Immediately, my wife pulled Lily into a hug, complaining, “You silly girl, why do you come all the way back at such a time Don’t you know it is cold outside ”
Lily just stayed two hours in case of missing her classes. Seeing Lily boarding the train, my wife started blaming me for that message, yet in a better mood. I did feel I handled this matter perfectly both for my wife and my child’s growth.
Later, I called my parents and told them about it. I never thought they would respond with a long silence, and then said: “How many times have you forgotten our birthdays Has either of us ever complained ”
9. What does the underlined word “oppressive” mean in paragraph 2
A. Relaxing. B. Funny. C. Unique. D. Heavy.

C. Some anxiety is felt of the woman. D. She wasn’t satisfied with her dinner.
11. Why did Lily burst into tears on seeing her mother
A. She was overjoyed to see her mother.
B. She felt sorry about forgetting her mother’s birthday.
C. She feared to be scolded for ignoring her parents’ love.
D. She pitied herself for being half-frozen all the way back.
12. What message is conveyed from the words of the author’s parents
A. Love is a two-way street. B. Birthday party is a must.
C. Parental love is for a return. D. It is never too late to say sorry.
D 10. C 11. B 12. A
根据上一句“On that day, I came home from work, stopped her from entering the kitchen and asked her to dine out. “Has Lily called ” she asked.
根据第三段“Early the next morning, my wife got up, dark rings encircling her eyes. We only have one child. When Lily still lived at home, every year when her birthday approached, we would start the grand preparations days in advance. And after she left for college, my wife would call her countless times from morning till night. How could she ignore all our love and utterly forget her mum’s birthday ”(第二天一大早,我妻子起床了,黑眼圈围绕着她的眼睛。
Happy birthday!’ she said, tears welling up.(‘对不起,妈妈。生日快乐!’她说,眼泪涌了出来)”可知,女儿见到妈妈哭了是因为自己忘记妈妈的生日而感到抱歉和懊悔。故选B项。
12. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Later, I called my parents and told them about it. I never thought they would respond with a long silence, and then said: ‘How many times have you forgotten our birthdays Has either of us ever complained ’(后来,我打电话给我的父母,告诉他们这件事。我从没想过他们会沉默很长时间,然后说:‘你多少次忘了我们的生日 我们俩谁抱怨过吗 ’)”可知,作者把女儿忘记她妈妈的生日这事儿讲给父母听,而父母的回答表明作者也多次忘记父母的生日。父母的沉默和后面的回答表明父母也是期待作者对他们生日的重视。由此可知,父母传达的信息是爱是一条双行道,爱是相互的。故选A项。
Passage 1
I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say, “I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet, now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing away to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

Passage 2
In an age when most Chinese people thought that a lunar eclipse(月食) was a sign of angry gods, Wang Zhenyi (1768-1797), an astronomer and mathematician who worked tirelessly to publish her discoveries about space, said, “Actually, it’s definitely because of the Moon.”
Wang was born at a time when feudal(封建的) customs in China prevented girls from getting a formal education. However, she was fortunate that her family encouraged her in learning. Her grandfather, a former district governor, shared his knowledge of astronomy with her, while her father, a medicinal scholar, taught her basic math. Despite being denied formal education, Wang was determined to learn and became self-taught, studying a vast collection of books on various subjects.
One of Wang’s most famous demonstrations involved creating a model to explain a lunar eclipse. After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow. Her article The Explanation of a Lunar Eclipse is still considered highly accurate for its time.
During the Qing dynasty, the Western calendar was introduced to China. Wang argued for its adoption because it was based on the movement of the Sun. Many Chinese scholars rejected the idea for it had come from the West, to which Wang simply responded, “What counts is the usefulness, no matter whether it is Chinese or Western.”
To make math and science accessible to common people, she spent years publishing articles hoping to make these ancient and poorly understood concepts easier to digest. She explained the rotation(旋转) of the planets, and even the Pythagorean theorem (勾股定理) for beginners.
Unfortunately, most of Wang Zhenyi’s works have not passed the test of time, but her contributions continue to be recognized in modern times. In 1994, the International Astronomical Union named a crater (环形山) on Venus after her. Wang’s legacy continues to inspire and encourage future generations to pursue knowledge and innovation.”
5. Why was it difficult for Wang to receive a formal education
A. Her family emphasizes her self-taught education.
B. Her family encourage her to follow feudal customs.
C. She came from a upper class family with a good schooling.
D. She lived in a time when girls were not allowed to attend school.
6. Which of the following best describe Wang’s personalities
A. She was dependent and curious. B. She was intelligent and open-minded.
C. She was determined and narrow-minded. D. She was hard-working and emotional.
7. Wang’s contributions include all the following except ______.
A. introducing the Western calendar to China.
B. arguing for the adoption of the Western calendar.
C. translating complex theories into simple concepts.
D. explaining a lunar eclipse using simple everyday objects.
8. What is one way that Wang’s legacy is recognized to inspire future generations
A. Her books are widely read today.
B. A lunar crater was named Wang Zhenyi.
C. A crater on Venus was named after her.
D. She was awarded a Prize for determination after death.
D 6. B 7. A 8. C
根据第二段中“Wang was born at a time when feudal (封建的) customs in China prevented girls from getting a formal education.(王生于中国封建习俗禁止女孩接受正规教育的时代。)”
根据第三段中“After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow. (在查阅了几十年的天文记录后,她用一盏灯、一面镜子和一张圆桌分别代表太阳、月亮和地球。通过移动物体,她能够表明月食发生时,月球正好经过地球后面,并移动到它的阴影。)”可推知,王贞仪很聪明,根据第四段中“Many Chinese scholars rejected the idea for it had come from the West, to which Wang simply responded, “What counts is the usefulness, no matter whether it is Chinese or Western.”(许多中国学者拒绝接受这种来自西方的观点,对此,王只是回答说:“重要的是有用性,不管是中国的还是西方的。”)”
根据第四段中“During the Qing dynasty, the Western calendar was introduced to China. (清朝时,西历传入中国。)”可知,文章只说西历传入中国,并没有说是王贞仪引进的,所以A项“将西历引入中国。”不是她的贡献,根据第四段中“Wang argued for its adoption because it was based on the movement of the Sun. (王主张采用这种方法(西历),因为它是基于太阳的运动。)”可知,B项“主张采用西历。”是她的贡献,根据倒数第二段中“To make math and science accessible to common people, she spent years publishing articles hoping to make these ancient and poorly understood concepts easier to digest. (为了让数学和科学更容易为普通人所接受,她花了数年时间发表文章,希望让这些古老而难以理解的概念更容易消化。)”可知,C项“将复杂的理论转化为简单的概念。”是她的贡献,根据第三段“After consulting decades of astronomical records, she used a lamp, a mirror and a round table to respectively symbolize the Sun, the Moon and the Earth. By moving the objects around, she was able to show that a lunar eclipse happened when the Moon passed directly behind the Earth and moved into its shadow.(在查阅了几十年的天文记录后,她用一盏灯、一面镜子和一张圆桌分别代表太阳、月亮和地球。通过移动物体,她能够表明月食发生时,月球正好经过地球后面,并移动到它的阴影。)”可知,D项“用简单的日常用品解释月食。”是她的贡献,故选A。
8. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In 1994, the International Astronomical Union named a crater (环形山) on Venus after her.( 1994年,国际天文联会以她的名字命名了金星上的一个陨石坑。)”
Passage 3
Five-year-old Willard struggled to tell the difference between an M and a W or a 6 and a 9. Unfortunately, his school teacher knew nothing about dyslexia(阅读障碍). She didn’t try to help him. Not surprisingly, Willard didn’t like school. Usually, his mind drifted-to playing outside, to his dog Maxie, or to the ants that lived near his family’s garden shed. Willard was especially curious about those ants. He felt like them-small and insignificant. Thus, one day, noticing that some ants were trying to build a house, he decided to help them and constructed a little building. Then he put sugar inside to encourage the ants to move in. When they did, Willard built more houses. He even built an ant school, with tiny swings, ladders and a merry-go-round. With the passage of time, a love for little things began to grow in his heart.
At school, Willard still struggled, but now he knew he could do something special. Maybe he wasn’t a failure after all.
When he quit school at age 15 and decided to pursue his dream of becoming one of the best artists in the world, his mother advised him, “The smaller you carve, the bigger your name will become.” So using a powerful microscope, he began to carve grains of sand, bits of fiber, and even specks(小颗粒)of dust.
Willard works best at night when there are few disturbances. He calms his body and, holding his breath, he carves between heart beats when blood is not pulsing through his fingertips. He often works for months to complete a sculpture. Then he paints it with bits of acrylics(丙烯画). Willard’s favorite paintbrush is one hair from the back of a dead housefly!
His sculptures have made Willard a wealthy man. But he says,“Success isn’t about material things like an expensive watch or a costly ring; it’s about persevering and achieving your dreams.”

Passage 1
My dad is a car mechanic, which involves lots of heavy lifting, tightening, shaking, and banging. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would bake great bread, but he is and he does. The shop where Dad works is not equipped with enough workers, so there’s lots of pressure on Dad.
I’ve been feeling kind of stressed out myself since I found out I didn’t qualify for the swim team. Now I’ll have to wait a whole year to try out again; that might as well be a million years.
Dad knew I was feeling pressure. Last Saturday he said it was time for me to help in the kitchen. I couldn’t imagine what help I could offer. Still, I followed right behind him.
Dad gave me an apron, got out his enormous stainless-steel mixing bowl, and told me to stir while he added the ingredients. When I had stirred the flour and milk mixture into a thick lump (块), Dad had me turn it over onto the countertop. Then he showed me how to knead (揉) the dough (生面团), which took ten minutes and a surprising amount of energy.
Next came the most difficult and surprising part — doing nothing. We waited for more than an hour for the dough to slowly swell up and double in size. After that, we punched the risen dough down to let the air out, divided it in two and waited for another hour.
“It’s hard to resist putting the dough directly into the oven, but if you do, the bread will be tough. The most important lesson of all is learning to be patient,” Dad explained.
While we waited, we sat and talked. Silence is a blank space that begs to be filled. It’s like the dough — it swells up and fills a room with emptiness unless you punch it down with words. It felt good to be still and listen to each other. As the flour dust in the kitchen quietly settled, time seemed to slow down. The dough was going to rise at its own pace. As I accepted that, I stopped watching the clock and drumming my fingers on the tabletop. I started enjoying the quiet time with Dad. My father taught me how to bake bread, but I think I learned something more.
1. Why did Dad ask the author to help in the kitchen
A. Dad liked baking bread with the author.
B. Dad wanted to help the author relieve the stress
C. Dad intended to teach him a lesson.
D. Dad himself was under huge pressure.
2. What would fill the emptiness of blank space
A. Baking B. Drumming. C. Talking D. Working.
3. What is the theme of the story
A. It is necessary to spend time with family.
B. It is difficult to learn to bake bread.
C. It is beneficial to relax in times of stress.
D. It is important to learn to be patient.
4. What is the most suitable title of the story
A. Dad’s Lesson B. Learning from Father
C. The Bread Lesson D. Baking Bread
B 2. C 3. D 4. C
根据第三段中“Dad knew I was feeling pressure. Last Saturday he said it was time for me to help in the kitchen.(爸爸知道我有压力。上星期六他说我该去厨房帮忙了)”可知,爸爸知道作者有压力,故让作者去厨房帮忙来帮助作者缓解压力,故选B。
2. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Silence is a blank space that begs to be filled. It’s like the dough — it swells up and fills a room with emptiness unless you punch it down with words.(沉默是一个乞求被填满的空白。就像面团一样——膨胀起来,让整个房间充满空白,除非你用话语把它压下去)”可知,用说话填满空白。故选C。
3. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The most important lesson of all is learning to be patient(最重要的教训是学会耐心)”可知,该故事的主题是学会耐心很重要,故选D。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段中“My father taught me how to bake bread, but I think I learned something more.(我父亲教我如何烤面包,但我想我学到了更多的东西)”可知,文章主要讲述父亲通过教作者烤面包让作者懂得耐心的重要性,C项“面包的道理”为最佳标题,故选C。
Passage 2
What do Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen, and Frodo all have in common with the heroes of ancient myths(神话) Joseph Campbell studied myths from all over the world and published a book called “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, retelling dozens of stories and explaining how each represents the mono-myth, or Hero’s Journey. So, what is the “Hero’s Journey”
He thinks of it as a cycle in his book. The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge. After crossing the threshold from his safe home to adventure, with some help probably from someone older, wiser, our hero solves a riddle, slays a monster, escapes from a trap. The hero’s darkest hour then comes, when he faces death and possibly even dies, only to be reborn. As a result, the hero claims some treasure, special recognition, or power, which can vary between stories. After all that adventure, the hero returns to his ordinary world, but upgrades to a new level. Nothing is quite the same once you are a hero.
The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated, because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. You leave your comfort zone, have an experience that transforms you and then you recover and do it again. You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.”
What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter Auditions(试镜) for the school play Baseball tryouts Love
Watch for this formula(公式) in books, movies, and TV shows you come across. You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again.
5. What is the correct order of the “Hero’s Journey”
①Return to the ordinary world but upgrade to a new level.
②Receive a call to adventure and assistance from a wiser man.
③Set out on the adventure and go through a series of tough trials.
④Face a life-or-death crisis and be reborn with some special power.
A. ①②③④ B. ④②①③ C. ②③④① D. ③②④①
6. Why is Hero’s Journey myth so popular
A. Because it’s a way to learn about the past.
B. Because it’s a way to reflect on our world.
C. Because these stories are part of human culture.
D. Because these stories are always being updated.
7. Which of the following may the author disagree with
A. We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger.
B. Difficulties we face tend to be treasures in life.
C. Our comfort zone will promote our development.
D. We should watch more movies and shows for the formula.
8. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage
A. Where to Find a Hero. B. Be Your Own Hero.
C. How to Conquer Your Fear. D. Seek Your Scary Cave.
C 6. B 7. A 8. B
根据文章第二段“The journey begins with the hero receiving a mysterious message, an invitation, or a challenge.
根据文章第三段“The Hero’s Journey myth exists in all human cultures and keeps getting updated because we humans reflect on our world through symbolic stories of our own lives. (英雄之旅存在于所有的文化中,并且不断地推陈出新。因为我们人类通过自身生活中极具象征性的故事,反映出所处的世界)”可知,英雄之旅的神话如此流行是因为它是反思我们的世界的一种方式。故选B。
7. 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“You don’t literally slay dragons or fight Voldemort, but you face problems just as scary. Joseph Campbell said, “In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure you seek.”(你不需要真正地屠龙或对抗伏地魔,但你面临的问题同样可怕。约瑟夫·坎贝尔说过:“在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏”)”以及倒数第二段“What is the symbolic cave then you fear to enter Auditions (试镜) for the school play Baseball tryouts Love (你害怕进入的象征性洞穴是什么?学校戏剧的试镜?棒球选拔赛? 爱?)”可知,在你害怕进入的洞穴里,藏着你所寻找的宝藏,由此推知,作者认为“洞穴”是好的,只有进入这些你害怕进入的洞穴才能找到寻找中的宝藏。A项:We all need a “cave” to hide in face of danger(面对困难时,我们都需要一个“洞穴”来躲藏)与作者表述不符。故选A。
通读全文,并结合最后一段“You will certainly see it again. Also be sensitive to it in your own life. Listen for your call to adventure. Accept the challenge. Conquer your fear and claim the treasure you seek. And then, do it all over again.(你一定会再看到它。在你自己的生活中也要对它保持敏感。倾听冒险的召唤。接受挑战。征服你的恐惧,得到你想要的宝藏。然后,再来一遍)”可知,文章倡导去冒险,接受挑战,征服恐惧。B项:Be Your Own Hero(做自己的英雄)可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。

Passage 1
It was National Adoption Day. The pet store was working with the Lexington Humane Society to find good homes for abandoned dogs and cats. After endless pleas (恳求) from my sons, Mark and Luke, I decided to stop in. I didn’t know it at the time but adopting a homeless dog would really make me feel better. I was struggling with depression. We’d moved from Ohio to Kentucky. Ohio had been my home for forty years, and I missed my parents, friends and the familiarity of home.
Inside the pet store, there were rows of cages filled with furry animals. I spotted ours immediately: a two-year-old female Jack Russell named Princess. I looked into her cage. She pushed her nose toward the cage, sniffed and then lowered her head. Trembling in her cage, she seemed unsure of her surroundings. I wondered if Princess felt that way when she’d been brought here, surrounded by people she didn’t know. Is that why she was shaking so hard It made me want her.
“Let’s adopt her,” I said. My sons couldn’t contain their excitement, “We want her!” My husband also agreed. After I filled out the paperwork, we took Princess home. She barely ate and didn’t bark the first few days, but gradually she relaxed.
One afternoon, I was about to doze off (打盹) when I felt Princess jump on the bed. She was like a friend next to me. Actually, after adopting Princess, I felt better. While I still missed my parents and friends, I started making friends and visiting places in Kentucky.
When my son Luke turned seven, we had a birthday party. While I was making the cupcakes, Princess settled on the floor next to me. She was taking in everything: the sounds of children laughing, the smell of food and two of my new friends sitting at the kitchen table. She looked around and then up at me and wagged her tail. I thought it was her way of saying, “I’m finally home” And you know what She was right. We were both home.
1. Why did the author feel depressed
A. She was homesick then. B. She lost her previous pet.
C. She disliked her new life. D. She felt sorry for the animals.
2. What made the author decide to adopt Princess
A. Its attractive physical appearance.
B. Its elegant responses to her family.
C. Its seemingly emotional suffering.

A. Setting in B. Holding on
C. Changing for good D. Caring for animals

根据第一段的“I was struggling with depression. We’d moved from Ohio to Kentucky. Ohio had been my home for forty years, and I missed my parents, friends and the familiarity of home.(我一直在与情绪低落作斗争。我们从俄亥俄州搬到了肯塔基州。俄亥俄州是我四十年的家,我想念我的父母、朋友和熟悉的家)”可知,作者情绪低落是因为当时她很想念家人和朋友。故选A。
根据第二段的“I spotted ours immediately: a two-year-old female Jack Russell named Princess. I looked into her cage. She pushed her nose toward the cage, sniffed and then lowered her head. Is that why she was shaking so hard It made me want her.(我立刻发现了我们的:一只名叫Princess的两岁雌性Jack Russell。我看着她的笼子。她把鼻子伸向笼子,嗅了嗅,然后低下了头。她在笼子里颤抖着,似乎对周围的环境不确定。我想知道当Princess被带到这里,周围都是她不认识的人时,她是否有这种感觉。那就是她抖得这么厉害的原因吗?这让我想要她。)”推知,作者最终决定收养Princess是因为当时的Princess和作者的状态很相似,正遭受情感上的痛苦。故选C。
3. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段的“Actually, after adopting Princess, I felt better. While I still missed my parents and friends, I started making friends and visiting places in Kentucky.(事实上,收养Princess后,我感觉好多了。虽然我仍然想念我的父母和朋友,但我开始结交朋友,去肯塔基州的一些地方。)”可知,Princess的到来改善了作者的社交生活。故选C。
4. 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章主要讲述作者在远在他乡想家的情况下收养似乎和自己经历相同情感痛苦的小狗Princess。Princess慢慢适应了在作者家的生活,而她也让作者逐渐适应了肯塔基的生活。结合最后一段的“I thought it was her way of saying, “I’m finally home” And you know what She was right. We were both home.(我认为这是她说“我终于有了家”的方式,你知道吗?她是对的。我们都有了“家”。)”可知,A项“安顿下来”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选A。

The frightened dog looked for a way to get back to the shore, but he was trapped on the ice. The river was too cold for him to swim to safety.
Some firefighters saw the dog drifting down the river as he passed through their city. They tried to help him, but they couldn’t reach him. The firefighters could only watched as the ice carried the dog farther down the river.
On the fourth day, the dog passed the mouth of the river and was swept out into the Baltic Sea. He had traveled more than 75 miles (120km) from where he began. he was moving farther away from land and any hope of rescue. The piece of ice he was standing on shrunk to the size of picnic table.
The dog was facing a deadly end to his an adventure, but his luck was about to change. some scientists and sailors aboard a research ship named the Baltica were passing through the area. They saw an animal moving on the ice in the distance and decide to ascertain.

The Baltica’s sailors were able to bring their ship close to the dog. They lowered a net next to the dog, but he was too scared to climb into it. The dog even slipped and fell into the cold water while they were trying to help him. Luckily, he was able to climb back onto the slippery ice.
Fearing that the dog would drown, the crew lowered a raft. Adam, the ship’s mechanic, used the raft to get close to the dog. Adam grabbed the dog by the back of the neck and pulled him into the raft.
Now, Baltic is the mascot(吉祥物) of the research ship that found him and travels with the crew everywhere. He has many fans around the world who learned about his incredible journey and rescue.

A. Her unique way to locate herself.
B. Her eagerness to develop her reading ability.
C. Her effort to remind mom to obey traffic rules.
D. Her growing desire to know the world around her.
3. What was the author’s view on factual reading
A. It would help her update test-taking skills.
B. It would allow much room for free thinking.
C. It would provide true and objective information.
D. It would help shape a realistic and serious attitude to life.
4. What could be the best title for the passage
A. The Magic of Reading B. The Pleasure of Reading

She was taking in everything: the sounds of children laughing, the smell of food and two of my new friends sitting at the kitchen table. She looked around and then up at me and wagged her tail. Passage 3
When you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion(时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).
Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur-unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种).It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s,the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur.
Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Model Paige Morgan says,”To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them-I think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She is trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.

Passage 3
A tiny school in western New South Wales is eyeing the skies hoping for dry weather so it can harvest its first wheat crop.
Seven students from kindergarten to year six attend Hermidale Public School, more than 600 kilometres west of Sydney. Each day they spend part of their school time outside tending the 85-hectare crop.
The land was donated by a former student. Fifty years ago young Craig Grimmond often looked out of the school window at a bare paddock(荒芜的田地) that neighbored the school. Now he owns the land and kindly donated it to the students for their project.
“People asked, ‘Why would you donate that whole block to them ’” he said. “I hardly use it and it’s going to be better for me in the long run because it’ll be cleaned up and will save me a job down the track.”
Principal Skye Dedman said the school community felt very lucky. They took this opportunity for the students. The students’ crop is a reality that seemed almost impossible three years ago. Ms Dedman said there were days when students were forced to stay indoors because of huge dust storms. Their school and their community really felt the threat of the drought.
The students have had the use of the land for three years. During the three years, the tiny community has dealt with a mouse plague(鼠疫), the pandemic and flooding. The whole community has thrown its support behind the project, including farmer and parent Darren Mudford.
“We’ve sown wheat this year and it would be nice if we got two or two-and-a-half tonne to the hectare, which is not a bad effort,” he said. “It’s much better than a cake sale.”
The students’ wheat crop is expected to raise up to $ 50,000. The money will then be used to send the students on trips around the country. They are hoping to go to Newcastle later this year to see their wheat being loaded at the port.
7. Why did Craig Grimmond donate the paddock to the school
A. It saved him from taking care of the paddock.
B. It was his promise to his former teachers.
C. The paddock was too far away from him.
D. He didn’t have money to run the paddock.
8. What made the students’ crop impossible three years ago
A. Their lack of confidence. B. The terrible dry weather.
C. Little community support. D. Their poor planting technology.
9. What was Darren Mudford’s attitude to the students’ wheat harvest
A. Worried. B. Regretful. C. Hopeful. D. Satisfied.
10. What will the students’ income be used for
A. Opening a cake store. B. Paying for their travels.
C. Enlarging the planting areas. D. Repaying the school community.
