(2023江苏省淮安市淮安区高一下学期期中)Lagos, a big city in Nigeria, has a population of 20 million, and they can produce between 13, 000 and 15, 000 tonnes of waste every day including 2, 250 tonnes of plastic.
Despite a lot of cleaning, Lagos has no proper system to dispose of rubbish, and not having public awareness of pollution brings a huge environmental challenge. Litter gets washed away by the rains and waterways and ends up in mountains of rubbish on the beaches. Light- house Beach is one of the beaches. It stretches for about 100 kilometers along the Atlantic, all the way to neighboring Benin. Lined with palm trees, the beach could be beautiful if it weren’t for all the pollution.
“It is time that we should raise awareness of keeping the environment clean and clean up all the plastic,” says Chioma Chukwura, who helped pick up rubbish on Lighthouse Beach. At the end of a tiring day, 230 large bin bags were put together on the hot sand, filled with dirty plastic.
“Although the job is challenging,a company will come and pick them up tomorrow. All the plastic here will get reused. Sold for $500 a tonne, the plastic could bring $250 million to Lagos each year, and a cleaner environment could promote the development of the city,” says Owoade Yussuf, organiser of the cleanup.
As the volunteers leave at the end of the day, always just 100 meters is clean. “There is still a lot to do. Maybe we need two months, continuously, to get this cleaned up,” says another volunteer. “We have to find a way to prevent the plastic from coming back. After we’ve finished, I’m sure we may still see litter here when we come back.”
On Lighthouse Beach, the problem isn’t just plastic. Destroyed ships also pollute the beach. With that kind of pollution, even an army of volunteers may struggle. However, with more help, they can still make a difference.
1. How does the author show the severity of rubbish in Lagos in paragraph l

【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了尼日利亚拉各斯的灯塔海滩上每年都会堆积很多塑料垃圾,志愿者们开始采取行动来清理这些垃圾。
1. 推理判断题。 根据第一段“Lagos, a big city in Nigeria, has a population of 20 million, and they can produce between 13,000 and 15,000 tonnes of waste every day including 2,250 tonnes of plastic.(拉各斯是尼日利亚的一个大城市,拥有2000万人口,每天产生1.3万至1.5万吨垃圾,其中包括2250吨塑料。)”可知,作者通过列举数据来呈现拉各斯垃圾污染的严重性。故选A。
2. 词义推测题。根据下文“Litter gets washed away by the rains and waterways and ends up in mountains of rubbish on the beaches.(垃圾被雨水和水道冲走,最终在海滩上堆积成山。)”可知,垃圾未能得到恰当的处理,结合划线词所在句“Lagos has no proper system to dispose of rubbish (拉各斯没有适当的系统dispose of 垃圾)”可推知,拉各斯并没有适当的系统来处理垃圾,所以划线短语dispose of的意思是“处理”,与deal with同义。故选B。
3. 细节理解题。 根据第三段“‘It is time that we should raise awareness of keeping the environment clean and clean up all the plastic,’ says Chioma Chukwura, who helped pick up rubbish on Lighthouse Beach. At the end of a tiring day, 230 large bin bags were put together on the hot sand, filled with dirty plastic.(在灯塔海滩帮忙捡垃圾的Chioma Chukwura说:“我们是时候提高保持环境清洁的意识,清理所有塑料了。”在疲惫的一天结束后,230个大垃圾袋被放在热沙上,里面装满了脏塑料。 )”,第四段“‘Although the job is challenging, a company will come and pick them up tomorrow. All the plastic here will get reused. Sold for $500 a tonne, the plastic could bring $250 million to Lagos each year, and a cleaner environment could promote the development of the city,’ says Owoade Yussuf, organiser of the cleanup.(“虽然这份工作很有挑战性,但明天就会有公司来录用他们。这里所有的塑料都会被重复利用。每吨塑料的售价为500美元,每年可以为拉各斯带来2.5亿美元的收入,更清洁的环境可以促进城市的发展,”清理活动的组织者Owoade Yussuf说。)”和第五段“As the volunteers leave at the end of the day, always just 100 meters is clean. ‘There is still a lot to do. Maybe we need two months, continuously, to get this cleaned up,’ says another volunteer. ‘We have to find a way to prevent the plastic from coming back. After we’ve finished, I’m sure we may still see litter here when we come back.’(当志愿者在一天结束时离开时,总是只有100米是干净的。

(2023江苏省泰州姜堰中学高一下学期期中)Like many people, public speaking once filled me with a sense of fear. As a writer, I felt much more comfortable expressing myself on the page, rather than from central stage. Strangely, I found that the feelings of anxiety were perfectly tolerable. Meanwhile, I tried my best to contain the feelings as I assumed that I’d be judged negatively for any non-verbal(非言语的) signal that showed my lack of confidence. I bet you must have had the same experience as me!
However, according to a striking new study, these concerns may be unreasonable. Jamie Whitehouse, a researcher at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, has shown that visible signs of stress are often appealing, making others like us and treat us warmly.
In 2021 Whitehouse found some initial evidence supporting this idea. Observing a group of 45 rhesus macaques( 恒河猴) in Punta Santiago Puerto Rico, he found that individuals tended to show more nervous scratching when they were around higher-ranking individuals and relative strangers with whom they did not already have a strong social bond. And that, in turn, seemed to change the nature of the interaction -- resulting in gentler behavior from the other monkey.
Inspired by this finding, Whitehouse decided to test whether humans displays of stress might also change individuals’ responses to us -- perhaps through a heart-warming response.
Whitehouse’s team first asked 23 participants to undergo the “Trier Social Stress Test”-- an anxiety-inducing routine in which the participants must undergo a fake job interview, with a three-minute speech about why they are the ideal candidate and an on-the-spot mental arithmetic test.
A further 133 participants were then asked to rate videos of the fake interviews -- with questions about how stressed the person appeared to be, and how much they liked the person they saw. Psychologsts, meanwhile, counted how many times the participants showed non-verbal signs of stress.
As the researchers had expected, the people rating the videos were able to predict how stressed the interviewees felt, and this seemed to come from those characteristic non-verbal signals. Most importantly, those perceptions then influenced the raters’ judgements of the interviewees’ likeability -- for the better. The more the interviewees showed signs of stress, the more appealing they were to the people watching their videos.
“This tells us that these behaviors are not just functionless by-products of stress, but actually have communicative functions,” Whitehouse says.
5. What can we learn from the author’s experience
A. He can hardly put up with his anxiety.
B. He tends to hide his anxious feelings.
C. He encourages others to express themselves.
D. He is good at comforting someone with anxiety.
6. What did Whitehouse find out about rhesus macaques in his 2021 study
A. Their anxiety could help bring others closer to them.
B. Their anxiety could be easily discovered by humans.
C. They behaved gently around higher-ranking individuals.
D. They showed various non-verbal sigals before stranger.
7. What is the finding of the researchers’ test
A. Showing stress can lead to negative judgements.
B. Showing stress can make people more likeable.
C. People who show stress perform better in the test.
D. People tend to look down upon those who show stress.
8. What is the significance of the study’s results
A. To help us prepare for job interviews.
B. To provide a proper way to deal with stress.
C. To show the value of nervous interviewees.
D. To justify the behaviors caused by stress.
【答案】5. B 6. A 7. B 8. D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章通过研究和实验证明了压力导致的行为在人际交往方面有积极的意义——在人际关系中表现出焦虑和压力的人更讨人喜欢。
5. 推理判断题。根据第一段第四句“Meanwhile, I tried my best to contain the feelings as I assumed that I’d be judged negatively for any non-verbal(非言语的) signal that showed my lack of confidence.”(与此同时,我尽力控制自己的情绪,因为我认为任何非语言的信号都会让我受到负面的评价,因为这表明我缺乏自信。)可知,作者认为任何非语言的信号都会让他遭受负面的评价,所以他会有意地隐藏自己的焦虑情绪。故选B项。
6. 细节理解题。根据第三段第二句第三句“Observing a group of 45 rhesus macaques( 恒河猴) in Punta Santiago Puerto Rico, he found that individuals tended to show more nervous scratching when they were around higher-ranking individuals and relative strangers with whom they did not already have a strong social bond. And that, in turn, seemed to change the nature of the interaction -- resulting in gentler behavior from the other monkey.”(他在波多黎各圣地亚哥蓬塔观察了一组45只恒河猴,发现当它们和地位更高的猕猴以及相对陌生的猕猴在一起时,它们往往会表现出更多紧张的抓挠。反过来,这似乎改变了互动的性质—导致另一只猴子的行为更温和。)可知,恒河猴紧张的抓挠行为使得对方会更温和地对待它,使他们的关系更加亲密。故选A项。
7. 细节理解题。根据第七段最后一句“The more the interviewees showed signs of stress, the more appealing they were to the people watching their videos.”(受访者表现出的压力越多,他们对观看他们视频的人就越有吸引力。)

(2023江苏省盐城市第一中学等多校高一下学期期中联考)Billions will be spent trying to deal with a bargain(便宜货) in the approach to Christmas. But as close attention turns to whether or not the deals on offer are really cheep, instead of marketing tricks, spare a thought for the thousands of extra deliveries that will be made and the resulting crowding and blockage, CO2 emissions (释放), and stress that this shopping holiday creates.
Demand for more drivers highlights the highly seasonal nature of shopping, with similar increases on Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and the run up to Christmas. Although the industry is constantly learning from past mistakes to better serve customers, it ignores extremely important energy, ability to move around and health issues. Behind the scenes, the basic equipment that makes all this online shopping possible is huge—the extra delivery vans (货车) add to already crowded and blocked roads, and drivers suffer from stress and tiredness. Seasonal shopping events like Black Friday harm people and the planet.
One medium-sized business in London recently told us that roughly 75% of the goods received by its front desk in the run up to Christmas were personal packages. Extremely importantly, in a hub-and-spoke (辐射状的) model, not only do these packages arrive from different vans travelling long distances from different warehouses (仓库), but delivery results in travelling on some of the most precious, crowded and blocked and polluted streets in London—simply to service online shopping preferences.
At this early stage of the next evolution of shopping, it is important that we consider the benefits and broader societal costs of different shopping and delivery options. Or else we will risk fighting with our responsibilities to cut carbon and improve air quality in cities.
9. What can we know about the result of extra holiday delivery
A. It creates less pleasure. B. It makes people crowd in the shops.
C. It produces more CO2 emissions. D. It makes the drivers earn more money.
10. What can we infer about the drivers in Paragraph 2
A. They harm the people and the planet.
B. They feel tired during the holiday shopping delivery.
C. They lead to crowded and blocked roads.
D. They are needed less on Mother’s Day.
11. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “highlights”
A. challenges. B. declares.
C. recommends D. emphasizes.
12. What is the text mainly about
A. The benefits of holiday shopping.
B. The concerns about the holiday shopping delivery.
C. The stress and tiredness caused by the holiday shopping.
D. The holiday shopping’s influence on society and environment.
【答案】9. C 10. B 11. D 12. B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了假期的配送发货带来的拥挤和堵塞、二氧化碳排放,以及给购物节日带来的压力。同时,作者也表达了对假日购物配送的担忧。
9. 细节理解题。根据第一自然段“But as close attention turns to whether or not the deals on offer are really cheep, instead of marketing tricks, spare a thought for the thousands of extra deliveries that will be made and the resulting crowding and blockage, CO2 emissions (释放), and stress that this shopping holiday creates. (但是,随着人们的注意力转向所提供的交易是否真的很便宜,而不是营销技巧,请考虑一下将要进行的数千次额外交付,以及由此造成的拥挤和堵塞,二氧化碳排放, 并强调这个购物假期带来的压力。)”可知,额外的假期配送发货的结果是它产生更多的二氧化碳排放。故选C。
10. 推理判断题。根据第二自然段“Although the industry is constantly learning from past mistakes to better serve customers, it ignores extremely important energy, ability to move around and health issues. Behind the scenes, the basic equipment that makes all this online shopping possible is huge—the extra delivery vans (货车) add to already crowded and blocked roads, and drivers suffer from stress and tiredness. Seasonal shopping events like Black Friday harm people and the planet.
根据第二自然段“Demand for more drivers highlights the highly seasonal nature of shopping, with similar increases on Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day and the run up to Christmas. (对更多司机的需求凸显了购物的高度季节性,母亲节、情人节和圣诞节前夕也出现了类似的增长。)”可猜测,highlights为“凸显”的意思,即购物季凸显了需求更多司机的问题。A. challenges. 挑战;B. declares. 宣布;C. recommends推荐;D. emphasizes.强调。故highlights语义最接近emphasizes。故选D。
12. 主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及最后一段“At this early stage of the next evolution of shopping, it is important that we consider the benefits and broader societal costs of different shopping and delivery options. Or else we will risk fighting with our responsibilities to cut carbon and improve air quality in cities. (在购物的下一步发展的早期阶段,我们必须考虑不同的购物和送货选择的好处和更广泛的社会成本。否则,我们就有可能抱着一套不切实际的期望,与削减碳排放和改善城市空气质量的责任作斗争。)”可知,文章主要讲的是关于假日购物配送的担忧。故选B。

(2023江苏省盐城市新丰中学、龙岗中学等五校高一下学期期中联考)This year a group called Teach For America (TFA) saw an increase in applications by 36 percent. The organization recruits(招聘) college graduates to help fill a teacher shortage in less developed areas of America. The organization’s leaders say some college graduates prefer to take the positions in public service during the economic(经济的) downturn but many feel a renewed spirit of public service.
“Teaching is much harder than I expected. Changing the world is never easy,” says Loren Heinbach. She has made up her mind to become a teacher to address the imbalance in education that exists between rich and poor communities.
Heinbach is one of over 6,000 TFA members, recent college graduates who volunteer to teach children in poor inner cities and rural public schools. She gives up possible work in medicine or law which will pay much more later on. Instead, she takes a teaching job at the KIPP Academy.

Heinbach’s students say she has high standards and expectations. One student says, “You have to really pay attention. The questions may seem easy, but if you make the wrong decision on a question, it’s like you really messed up.” “She also likes us to take notes. And I do thank her because she is getting us ready for college,” another student adds.
13. What’s the purpose of TFA recruiting college students
A. To send more teachers to poor areas. B. To create well-paid jobs.
C. To grow its business. D. To earn high praise from the government.
14. Why does Loren Heinbach choose to take a teaching job
A. She will get an increase in pay soon. B. She failed to get into the public service.
C. She tries to live up to her parents’ expectation. D. She wants to change the imbalanced education.
15. What can we know about the KIPP Academy
A. Its teachers are experienced. B. Its teachers dislike schooling.
C. Its students perform badly in study. D. Its students are from rich families.
16. Which word best describes Loren Heinbach as a teacher
A. Strict. B. Regretful. C. Lucky. D. Stressed.
【答案】13. A 14. D 15. C 16. A

(2024·江西赣州高一下学期阶段练习)The Monarch butterfly(帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ winter home. The population decrease is worrying as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the non-profit World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently issued findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the Monarch butterfly presence has decreased to less than a hectare (公顷) of forest area. In the mid-1990s, Monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forests. The findings represent an almost 60 percent decrease in the Monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study. It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists blame the drop on higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern U. S. where the butterflies lay eggs. The weather conditions affect the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time. In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations(迁徙), the butterflies travel south as many as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35 percent increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Officials and activists called for more action to help the species. Such calls include the need to reduce threats of destroying milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office, told reporters after releasing the latest data.
1. What can be learned from the second paragraph
A. The reasons for the Monarch butterfly population decrease.
B. The findings of the research on the Monarch butterfly population.
C. The efforts Mexico’s government and World Wildlife Fund have made.
D. The effects of the Monarch butterfly population decrease on the environment.
2. What mainly caused the Monarch butterfly population decrease according to biologists
A. Habitat loss. B. Human hunting.
C. Weather conditions. D. Their natural enemies.
3. What should be done to help the Monarch butterflies
A. Plant milkweed. B. Keep the species in a reserve.
C. Promote public education. D. Watch over the forests.
4. What’s the best title of the passage
A. The Monarch Butterflies Are a Threat to Other Insects
B. The Monarch Butterfly Population Decrease Is a Concern
C. Mexican Forests Are the Winter Home of the Monarch Butterflies
D. The Monarch Butterflies Often Suffer When Travelling to Spend Winter
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A 4. B

When Hurricane Ian hit Florida, Karen Lauder refused to leave her home because she was wrong about the intensity(强度) of the storm. Karen is 84 years old and depends on a wheelchair to get around because she is missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused.
Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently(猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action.
First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies(自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.
Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears!
“If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said.“She’s never been happier to see me.”
Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections(感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’re grateful just to be here.

A. She had nowhere to go.
B. She was too old to move.
C. She thought the storm was not violent.
D. She lost her wheelchair and was unable to leave.
6. Why did Johnny take selfies along the way to Karen’s home
A. To record his swimming trip. B. To show off his swimming skills.
C. To warn other rescuers of danger. D. To report his safety to his family.
7. How did Johnny’s family keep in touch in the storm
A. By shouting. B. Over the phone.
C. Through e-mail. D. With other’s help.
8. How did Johnny feel when he heard Karen shouting
A. Curious. B. Frightened. C. Confused. D. Relieved.
【答案】5. C 6. D 7. B 8. D

Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.
The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake that occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world gave money.
The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously (although very slowly) and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.
All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth’s history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid (小行星) impacts (撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth’s species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.

Are you addicted to computer games Do you stay up all night playing them Do you feel happy after you play computer games
There’s no doubt that the excitement and appeal of games these days make them hard to put down. We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming: You can role play — creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.
However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us Should we worry about their effects on our health Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety advisor, Alan MacKenzie, thinks “many people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that’s in there”. He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children” .
Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.
Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.
So every coin has two sides. It seems today, gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way, we can all take part. If video games have two sides, which side do you stand by

On July 14, 2017, Maryam Mirzakhani, Stanford professor of mathematics and the first female winner of the Fields Medal in Mathematics, died at the age of 40.
The news was especially hard-hitting for a generation of younger academics who have always held Maryam to be a role model whose example is helping redefine(重新定义) women’s status in science and especially in mathematics. What was fun was that Maryam always tried to avoid the media’s spotlight. Despite being the first woman to gain such high status in the world of mathematics--winning what’s often called the “Nobel Prize of Math”— her modesty (谦逊) and simplicity stood out to those who knew her.
Maryam originally wanted to be a writer, a passion of hers that never faded away even during her postgraduate studies. However, she found an even greater joy in how rewarding it felt to solve mathematical problems. As a student, she was the first female member of Iran’s national team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), and she won two gold medals in two years, which is still a record.
She received her bachelor’s degree in Iran and later studied at Harvard. In 2014, Maryam was recognized with the Fields Medal, the highest-ranking award in mathematics. Her work focused on curved surfaces like sphere (球体). Her achievements have applications in other scientific fields including engineering and material science. Unfortunately, at that time she was already fighting against the breast cancer.
Maryam’s legend (传奇) may continue to grow after her early death. Still only 20 percent of full-time math teachers at U.S. universities are women. The example of a woman who rose to the top of this still very male field may help inspire math’s next generation.
In the same way people think of Marie Curie or Jane Goodall as scientific pioneers, Maryam Mirzakhani will go down in history as a pioneer as well as a mathematical genius.
17. What made Maryam famous worldwide
A. Everlasting love for writing.
B. Hiding behind the media’s spotlight.
C. Fighting for women’s equal social status.
D. Being the first female winner of Fields Medal.

I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here Lettuce or hope
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a cup, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
25. Why did the author soak the stub in water
A. To decorate the nice cup. B. To hope that it would grow.
C. To make a video in person. D. To remove kitchen rubbish.
26. What can we infer from paragraph two

B. This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C. Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup.
D. The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves.
27. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed.

It is challenging to teach children about seasonal foods in a modern-day grocery store (杂货店). Having lots of choices of fresh produce from all around the world means that a sense of the seasons is lost. That’s why I like being part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Every week I receive a share of vegetables that comes from a nearby farm. I do not know ahead of time what I’m getting, nor do I have any say on what comes home; I take whatever was harvested earlier that same day, based on the week’s weather conditions, and use them to the best of my ability.
My kids have had a good knowledge of the supply of certain vegetables throughout the harvesting season. They know what it’s like to eat a lot of asparagus(芦笋) until they’re sick of it, only to move on to dark greens and leafy salads, then eggplants, and tomatoes, and finally the root vegetables that mark the arrival of cold weather.
The funny thing is, when you’ve eaten a ton of something for a few weeks, you’re ready to move on to the next crop (作物) and leave the other behind, but when its time comes the following year, the expectation will return. In this way, a CSA share creates excitement at vegetables that can’t be felt when everything can be bought all the time, as it is in a grocery store.
A farmers’ market can offer similar lessons in seasonality to a CSA, but it differs in that you have more choices about what you buy. A CSA share, however, only offers few kinds of vegetables and sometimes fruits, forcing you to work out ways of using them up. I enjoy this challenge because it tests my cooking skills and introduces my family to new and unusual vegetables. What’s more, it is glad to know I’m supporting local farmers by eating what they want to grow, not just what I’m used to eating.
29. What is special about the vegetables offered by the CSA program
A. They are free.
B. They are cheap.
C. They can’t be found in local grocery stores.
D. They make the author full of expectations.
30. What does the author think of the CSA share
A. It provides enough supply of vegetables.
B. It makes people choose vegetables freely.
C. It keeps people’s excitement for vegetables.
D. It makes people become sick of eating vegetables.
31. What does the author say about the program in the last paragraph
A. It encourages him to support local farmers.
B. It helps him learn about the community.
C. It gives people more choices of foods.
D. It causes local farmers a lot of stress.
32. What is the best title for the text
A. Local food is becoming more popular
B. The CSA program is making a difference
C. People are encouraged to experience farm life
D. Naturally grown food improves people’s health

I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in college ” I was stunned and delighted recently when a student sat across from me and replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. “You see, my parents have never let me fail,” he said. “When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more rigorous course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission. Even the sacrifice of staying up late to do something unrelated to school, they see it as a risk to my academic work and college success.”
Kids all over the world admit they are under tremendous pressure to be perfect. So students are usually in shock when I chuckle and tell them I never expect perfection. How could a dean of admission at one of America’s most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest The reality is (that) perfection doesn’t exist.
I’ve spent enough time in high schools to know teenagers will never be perfect. They do silly things, mess up, fall down, and lack confidence. The ability to bounce back is a fundamental life skill students have to learn on their own. The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. During my weekend of interviews, another student told me, “I’m ashamed to admit I failed precalculus, but I decided to take it again and got a B-plus. I’m now taking calculus, and even though I don’t love it, I’m glad I pushed through!” I asked him what he learned from the experience. “I learned to let go of shame,” he said. “I realized that I can’t let a grade define my success. I also learned that if you want anything bad enough, you can achieve it.”
I smiled as I wrote his words down on the application-review form. This kid will thrive on my campus. Not only will the faculty love him, but he has the coping skills he needs to adjust to the rigors of life in a residential college setting. Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming, and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college.
33. What does the underlined word “rigorous” in the first paragraph mean
A. fun B. lively C. strict D. special

由第一段中“When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more rigorous course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission. (当我想在某件事上碰碰运气时,他们提醒我这不是一条安全的路。他们告诉我,参加一门更rigorous课程或尝试一项我可能不会成功的活动,都会毁掉我大学录取的机会)”可知,这个学生想碰运气去获得成功,其父母却告诫他这么做会毁掉大学录取的机会,比如尝试一项自己可能不会成功的活动会毁掉大学录取的机会,Taking a more rigorous course应与trying an activity I may not succeed呼应,可得出碰运气去参加一门更严格的课程可能会让这个学生大学录取失败,画线词意为“严格的(strict)”。故选C项。
34. 推理判断题。由第三段中“The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon. (失败的教训不能在课堂上教授;它们需要经历和反思)”和“During my weekend of interviews, another student told me, “I’m ashamed to admit I failed precalculus, but I decided to take it again and got a B-plus. I’m now taking calculus, and even though I don’t love it, I’m glad I pushed through!” I asked him what he learned from the experience. “I learned to let go of shame,” he said. “I realized that I can’t let a grade define my success. I also learned that if you want anything bad enough, you can achieve it.”(在我周末的面试中,另一名学生告诉我,“我很惭愧地承认我的微积分考试不及格,但我决定再考一次,并获得了B+。
由最后一段中“This kid will thrive on my campus. Not only will the faculty love him, but he has the coping skills he needs to adjust to the rigors of life in a residential college setting. (这个孩子会在我的校园里茁壮成长的。教员们不仅会喜欢他,而且他有应对能力,能够适应寄宿大学环境中的严酷生活)”可推知,作者在申请审查表上写下学生的话时面带微笑,是因为他认为这个学生在校园里会茁壮成长、受老师喜爱、有优点,这个学生会前途光明。故选D项。
36. 主旨大意题。通读全文和最后一段中“Failure is about growth, learning, overcoming, and moving on. Let’s allow young people to fail. Not only will they learn something, it might even get them into college. (失败关乎成长、学习、克服和继续前进。让我们允许年轻人失败。他们不仅会学到一些东西,甚至可能进入大学)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者是大学的面试官,但是从不会期待学生做得过于完美,因为作者认为有失败经历的申请才是真实的,一位面试者的自述和作者提及的一个学生也表明学生也应该从失败中获益,作者最想告诉我们的是学生要从对失败的积极态度中受益,A项“学会失败”符合文意。故选A项。

The school is in a neighborhood of Washington, DC. The students there traditionally perform (表现) in the lowest 25% of national standards. Vice Principal Kristy Ochs says the school is working hard to improve the quality of education, but it is difficult to find teachers willing to do the hard work.
Ochs also gets her start in TFA. Two-thirds of members stay in education after their two-year service ends. She says these new teachers make every effort to teach school.

9. What did the world do when the tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean
A. They gave away money to the beggars.
B. They sponsored to help the survivors.
C. They donated their possessions to the survivors.
D. They helped rebuild the coastlines and communities.

C. The possible place. D. The possible frequency.
11. What can we conclude according to the passage
A. There are some signs before natural disasters.
B. Earthquakes always happen on fault lines.
C. The huge tsunami in the Indian Ocean was caused by an earthquake.
D. We humans can do something to prevent natural disasters.
12. According to the passage, which may be the most dangerous natural disaster
A. Asteroid impact. B. Earthquake.
C. Tsunami. D. Volcano.

The hustle and bustle(喧嚣)of life, walking back and forth from the ideal to reality, and the inner confusion hidden behind a social mask-these daily experiences are recorded by Chinese youths in lines of poetry online. Recently, 124 Bilibili internet users shared their works in a poem collection.
One blogger on Xiaohongshu who goes by the nickname Gehuaren is one such poetry lover. The twenty-something girl not only writes poems as a form of entertainment in her spare time, but also improvises(即兴创作)poems for others at night markets in Yunnan. As a street-stall poet, Gehuaren often writes pieces of poetry quickly based on themes from customers. Once the poem has been completed, she refuses to change her work because she feels her poems reflect her first reaction. For her, everything in the world, no matter trivial or significant, can serve as her poetic inspiration. “A glass, a tree in the dawn or a person who once talked with me…these all could become themes for my poems,” said Gehuaren.

Many have made comments “I feel healed by your poems because I can find beauty from unnoticeable things and in turn, slow down to reflect on my life.”
Apart from poetry, various means such as vlogging and photosharing can be used to record moments of daily life. But young people consider poetry to be the best way to express them. “Taking photos or vlogging can just show the object or emotions in real life. Yet poetry, which can be used to excite the imagination, shows the beauty of daily life, ”an 18-year-old said. So when he is inspired by the beauty of daily life, the boy writes it down into lines of poetry and then shares them with his friends on his WeChat Moments.

A. fun B. lively C. strict D. special

C. Teenagers get lessons of failure through experiences.
D. Young people spend enough time letting go of shame.
35. Why did the author smile as he wrote the student’s words down on the application-review form
A. Because the college teachers would love the student for his perfection.
B. Because he succeeded in persuading the student into the college.
C. Because the student realized his dream of being a perfect person.
D. Because he thought the student would have a promising future.
36. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Learn to Fail B. Live to Learn
C. Try to Succeed D. Decide to Experience

A phrase “less screen time and more green time” is popular now. A study from the University of Adelaide found that more time outside and less time spent watching TV is connected with better psychological (心理的) results and school achievements among teenagers. Gardening is a great way to do so.
Jim Carter, a psychologist of America, is asking for teenagers’ return to traditional values of gardening, and thinks that they need to turn off the TV and go outside to do something healthier instead. Carter even considers it important to put gardening as a usual course because it is proven to be good for mental health.
“It’s physical exercise, and it teaches patience,” Carter explains. “The wait for a small sunflower seed (葵花籽) to become a six-foot plant is long.”
“I’m hearing that teenagers are struggling to deal with stress, and every time they open Gardeners’ World, they talk about how gardening helps them deal with stress. They learn so much about life, and so much about themselves through gardening,” said Lee Connelly, a teacher who is carrying out his own green school programme—Gardeners’ World. “The join of gardening into the class course for schools presents a remarkable chance to change education and the benefits are far beyond the classroom, influencing mental health, behavior and developing a lifelong love for horticulture (园艺).”
37. What does Carter suggest teenagers do
A. Do exercise at home. B. Go back to gardening.
C. Turn on the TV at night. D. Pay attention to psychological courses.
38. Why does Carter mention the sunflower seed
A. To prove gardening is easy. B. To say dealing with stress is difficult.
C. To show green time is hard to find. D. To explain gardening develops patience.
39. What can we say about Lee Connelly’s green school programme
A. It is meaningful. B. It is useless. C. It is costly. D. It is challenging.

Tropical cyclones(热带气旋), including hurricanes and typhoons, are now moving at a slower speed than they did decades ago, new research shows.
While having a cyclone travel with less speed may seem like a good thing, it’s actually just the opposite. Wind speeds within the storm remain high, but the whole system itself moves slower, allowing punishing rains to stay longer over communities. “Nothing good comes out of a slowing storm,” says James Kossin, author of the paper. “It can increase the amount of time that buildings suffered from strong wind. And it increases rainfall.”
In his paper, Kossin showed that from 1949 to 2016, tropical cyclones across the globe slowed their movement by 10 percent on average. In some regions(地区), the speed of those storms slowed even more as they hit land. In the western North Pacific, the decrease was much more manifest—almost a third. That means a storm that may already hold more moisture(水分)will have time to drop more of it in each spot.
Kossin’s work was based on details of almost 70 years’ worth of storms, but he didn’t try to determine what was causing the slowdown. Still, the change is exactly what he and other cyclone experts said, which would be expected from climate change. With the polar regions warming faster than other parts of the globe, that is changing the pressure and reducing the winds that push these storms.
Christina Patricola, a scientist, called Kossin’s work important and new and said she found it reliable. “I was not surprised by his findings,” she says. “But I was surprised by the speed of the slowdown.”
Kossin hopes that scientists will begin building models that show which places are likely to face the most risk. Given that storms in some regions are moving towards polar regions and already increasing in intensity(强度), cyclones causing unusually powerful rain may threaten places not normally in their paths. Scientists must take action to make those places suffer less from the disasters.
41. Why is the decrease in cyclones’ speed a bad thing
A. It leads the cyclones to move faster on the ground.
B. It causes the cyclones to have higher wind speed outside.
C. It makes hard rains and strong wind last longer in one place.
D. It results in more typhoons taking place in some communities.
42. What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Obvious. B. Satisfying. C. Confusing. D. Impossible.
43. What does Paragraph 4 suggest
A. Climate change in the polar regions is under control.
B. Scientists find it hard to understand the slower cyclones.
C. Scientists should do further experiments in polar regions.
D. Climate change may be the cause of the slowdown of the cyclones.
44. Why does Kossin want scientists to build models in the last paragraph
A. To find out the normal paths of serious cyclones.
B. To prove the speed of the cyclones can be controlled.
C. To reduce the damage from cyclones to possible areas.
D. To call on scientists to focus on the danger of climate change.

The world’s most famous tire(轮胎) graveyard(坟地) of 42 million tires in the sands of Kuwait is finally being cleaned up and recycled. This news in itself would be a major relief to locals who have to suffer from the clouds of black smoke arising during fires. But the government isn’t stopping there. They are aiming to create a green city of 25,000 homes in line with a post-oil Persian Gulf, with a focus on sustainability and tourism.
The first step is to clear the ground. The Salmiya area, nicknamed “Rubber(橡胶) Mountain”, is formed from hundreds of small mountains of spent tires — a reaction from the one million cars which were added to Kuwait’s roads over the decade.
EPSCO Global General Trading recycling company has opened a recycling plant for the tires, where they’ve been collected, sorted, cut up, and pressed into other materials like rubbery coloured flooring tiles (铺地砖). The plant opened in January of 2021, and can recycle up to 3 million tires a year. The recycled material is then exported out to nearby gulf neighbours and Asia. In the place of the tires will be South Saad Al-Abdullah City, a green city characterizing a new era in the Middle-Eastern country.
Spent tires are a major environmental problem worldwide due to the room they take up and the chemicals they can release.
“We have moved from a difficult stage that was characterized by great environmental risk,” says Oil Minister Mohammed al-Fares. “Today the area is becoming clean and all tires are being removed to begin the launch of the project of Saad Al-Abdullah city.”
Expected to cost ?3.3 billion and require 30 years to complete, the city hopes to feature green technology, probably like the kind one can see in other cities on the Persian Gulf, both existing and not. Saudi Arabia is planning to build a zero-emissions, car-less future city that’s centered around access to big data rather than water or crops.

We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss.
But the most harmful relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but devalue your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.
Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt-Lunstad shows that ambivalent(矛盾情绪的) relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people talked about controversial(具有争议性的) topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is obvious, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves.
One reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. Feeling unsure can break the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more distressing to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone stabs you in the back, it stings more if he’s been friendly to your face.
48. Which of the following can be considered as a frenemy
A. Your neighbor’s kid who advises you to study hard but kill his own time.
B. Your classmate who admires your hard work at first, but doubts your intelligence later.
C. Your mother’s friend who encourages you to spend more time on homework but less on smart phones.
D. Your father’s colleague who proposes you to do a reasonable amount of homework while ensuring enough sleep.

52. What is the passage mainly about
A. Negative relationships are bad for health. B. Ambivalent relationships are unpredictable.
C. Ambivalent Relationships are the most harmful. D. Positive relationships are better than negative ones.

Spain is a country that lies in southwestern Europe. It’s surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the south and the east, while to the north and northeast of Spain lie France, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay. The west and northwest of Spain are surrounded by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.
The official name of the state is the Kingdom of Spain. Madrid is the capital city, which is also one of the famous places in Spain. Spain, which covers 505,925 square kilometres, is one of the largest countries in Europe.
The weather in Spain differs from one area to another. Most of the rain that happens in Spain is in the mountainous areas. The plains hardly receive any rainfall.
Soccer is an important part of life in Spain. It’s said that Spanish children learn to walk and play soccer at exactly the same time. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are two Spanish soccer teams, which are respected by soccer fans not only in Spain, but all over the world. The popularity of the sport can be judged from the fact that three major soccer teams, which are Real Madrid, Atletico de Madrid, and Rayo Vallecano, were born in Madrid.
If you are a tourist, then you will want to know about the driving rules in Spain. If you’re not from the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, then for you to drive you’ll have to carry your international driver’s license. Bad news if you haven’t celebrated your 18th birthday. If you want to rent a car, then you must have completed 21 years of age. Between the 16th and 17th century, the efforts of France’s Jesuits played a key role in the transportation of science and culture between China and the West. Their first mission to reach China dates back to 1552, when St. Francis Xavier arrived on a Chinese island. He died on the island a year later, having never reached the mainland. But three decades later, the Jesuits made a second and successful attempt. During their stay, the Jesuits introduced Western science, mathematics, astronomy, and visual arts to China and took part in philosophical conversations with representatives of Confucianism. Importantly, the Jesuits also took precious art and cultural artworks back to France. Their furniture, architecture and design all became influenced by the Chinese style.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the popularity of chinoiserie (中国风格) continued to increase, particularly in England. Many of the architectures were covered with chinoiserie wallpaper relating to flowers, birds and trees. But shortly after, the popularity began to wane. The appeal of China and East Asia had to compete with other tastes, such as Turkish, Egyptian and Greek.
The first three decades of the 20th century witnessed a revival (复兴) in the popularity of chinoiserie both in Europe and America. Chinese dragons were drawn on cushions, curtains and wallpaper, while Chinese coats and hairstyles proved popular with women. The style was associated with modernity and was a by-product of World War I. Chinoiserie was associated with wealthy, stylish women and attached itself to the boom in entertainment as people dressed up to visit cinemas.
In 2024, chinoiserie is making yet another comeback. The rise of social media and home blog lifestyle pages has seen demand increase for imitations (模仿) of Chinese artwork and furniture. But critics point out how much of it is based on an idea of Chinese art and design and who actually creates it.

We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, surrounded by people who are, like us, deeply focused on their smartphones or, worse, struggling with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem It’s possible that we all don’t have enough conversational ability. It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s embarrassing and challenging, or we think it’s annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s a valuable social practice that leads to big benefits.
It is easy to consider small talk as unimportant, but we can’t forget that deep relationships wouldn’t even exist(存在) if there weren’t casual conversations. Small talk is the grease(润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The secret to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people to a coffee shop. One group was asked to interact with its waiter, the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported obviously higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband,” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral(边缘的) members of our social network is important for our happiness and health.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging, a link with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners,” he says.
