(2024·广东·一模)Welcome to WSU Libraries! In this guide, we’ll unlock the mysteries of call numbers and location prefixes. Knowing these helps you quickly locate and access your desired books.
Call Numbers
Books and material are arranged on our shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. These call numbers uniquely identify and organize items near other material on the same or similar subjects. Consider the call number: LB2395 C65 1991.
LB defines the subject area. The call letters are typically arranged in alphabetical (字母的) order, starting from A and continuing through the alphabet. Knowing the letter(s) for your subject area gives you a place to start browsing the shelves. For example: A — General works; B — Philosophy, Psychology, Religion; D — world History; G — Geography; H— social sciences; J — Political science; K — Law; L— Education; M — Music; N — Arts; P— Language and Literature; Q — science. For more, click here.
2395 is the classification number, which further distinguishes the subject matter. Read as a whole number: 1, 2, 3, 45, 100, 2430.
C65 is the Cutter number and usually represents the author’s last name. Find C, then 65. Read the number as a decimal (小数).
1991 is the year of publication.
Location Prefixes
Some call numbers have a location prefix. Location prefixes mean that the book or material is shelved in a special place, and may have loan restrictions. WSU uses the following prefixes:
7.Which book maybe identified under the call number “NU238 C719 2013”
A.An Introduction to Modern Art. B.The ABC of Computer science.
C.The Recycling of waste oils. D.A short History of France.
8.What would be the Cutter number if you are looking for a book by Whitney Sherman
A.C78. B.S53. C.W67. D.L59.
9.Where can you find the book “RES AG243 G87 1992”

(2024·广东·一模)Critics’ choice: The year’s best novels…
1. The Love Songs of W. E. B.Du Bois by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers (Harper, $29)
The novel from a celebrated poet, this 800-page work is many things at once: a moving coming-of-age story, an examination of race, and an exploration of American history. Out of curiosity about the secrets in her family, Ailey uncovers stories that trace back to her Native American, Scottish, and enslaved African-American ancestors.
2. Matrix by Lauren Groff (Knopf, $28)
If Matrix were written by anyone else, it would be a hard sell. But Lauren Groff has reimagined the life of 12th-century poet Marie de France so that we can’t help but stay with this royal castoff as she’s sent away, at 17, to run a poor church, which she eventually changes into a shelter for women and a challenge to the male-dominated world.
3. Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro (Knopf, $28)
A robot that has been programmed to be a sickly teenager’s “Artificial Friend,” Klara serves as our eyes on a troubling near future in which technological progress is pushing moral boundaries. But her outsider view allows the author of Remains of the Day, now a Nobel Prize winner, to explore what makes people irreplaceable.
4. Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr (Scribner, $30)
Doerr’s first novel since 2014 covers several hundred years — from 1453 Constantinople to a 22nd-century spaceship escaping from Earth. The book runs 640 pages, but without a wasted word. As engaging as a great bedtime story and as readable as Harry Potter, it’s above all a celebration of the human spirit and its power to dream impossible dreams.
28.Which book is written by a poet
A.The Love Songs of W. E. B.Du Bois. B.Matrix.
C.Klara and the Sun. D.Cloud Cuckoo Land.
29.What is the central theme explored in Klara and the Sun
A.Historical events. B.Pursuit of dreams.
C.Human irreplaceability. D.Teenagers’ friendship.
30.What do the four novels have in common
A.They all cover hundreds of years. B.They are all chosen by critics.
C.They are all the author’s first novel. D.The main characters are all humans.

30.细节理解题。根据标题“Critics’ choice: The year’s best novels… (评论家之选:本年度最佳小说……)”可知,这四部作品都是由评论家挑选的。故选B项。

(2024·广东广州·二模)Some of the greatest discoveries in science have been completely accidental. Then again, maybe science had a little help...
Ice Candy
One of America’s favorite summertime treats came about thanks to a particularly cold night in the San Francisco Bay area in 1905. That’s when 11-year-old Frank Epperson forgot a glass containing powdered soda mix, water and a wooden stick out at the doorway overnight. The next morning, Frank discovered the mixture had frozen around the stick. He popped it out of the cup, licked it…and summers were never the same!
Safety Glass
In 1903, French chemist douard Bénédictus accidentally dropped a glass bottle. To his surprise, the glass cracked but wasn’t broken into pieces. Out of curiosity, he checked it carefully. As it turned out, the bottle hadn’t been cleaned properly and was coated with a thin film of a kind of liquid plastic. A happy accident led to the discovery of safety glass.
YInMn Blue
In 2009, Mas Subramanian, a professor of materials science at Oregon State University, was testing out new materials for electronics in his lab with graduate students. A mixture of metals went into the furnace. What came out was a striking blue mixture. The first new blue since cobalt (深蓝) was discovered in 1802, is called “YInMn Blue.”
Penicillin
In 1928, Scottish researcher Alexander Fleming returned to his lab after a two-week vacation only to discover that mold (霉菌) from an open window had made an uncovered dish of bacteria dirty. Strangely enough, the mold stopped the bacteria from growing, giving the world its first antibiotic.

C.They are all the author’s first novel. D.The main characters are all humans.
