I started a “question of the day” section in a family text group. We’d talk about everything from movies to politics. But despite several warnings from loved ones that some of my responses were judgmental and that I was too quick to attack an opinion, I all but killed that group text. It had a good 12 people in it. We’d shared laughs, encouragement, and funny memes (表情包). It took only one conversation — which I was in the middle of — to end it.
I realized that I had a problem. The medium for my problem is the smartphone. Before smartphones enabled instant communication, people talked on the telephone. In person, you could cut in a “What do you mean by that ” to correct a misunderstanding before it got out of hand. Don’t get me wrong: I love a good group text. It makes me feel connected to people in a way that I just can’t seem to anymore, now that I have a wife and kids.
I’m learning, but I had a relapse (复发) recently. I joined a new text group. I introduced my “question of the day” feature. I fooled myself into thinking that I was encouraging a healthy debate on current events. No. Others in the group saw it as me trying to prove that my way was the right way. Then I made the mistake of sharing some personal information that one friend had told me during a phone conversation. I thought everyone knew. Then this friend started referring to me as a snitch — not terms of kind word. So I asked him about it — in person. That’s when he told me I’d shared sensitive information he hadn’t told anyone else. I apologized plentifully and came away from the conversation more determined to slow down my texts.
My new resolve seems to be working. You should be pleased to know that I have avoided making a few points that I was tempted (鼓动) to make in individual and group texts. In some cases, I didn’t even respond. I haven’t lost any more connections by doing this.
24.How does the author introduce the topic
A.By making judgments on politics. B.By responding to some text messages.
C.By presenting a personal experience. D.By starting a funny conversation.
25.What problem does the author have in digital communication
A.Ignoring the need to listen to others. B.Making quick and sharp responses.
C.Failing to express himself timely. D.Focusing on the issues of his own.
26.Why was the author attacked by his friend in the text group
A.He gave away the privacy of his friend.
B.He always made mistakes on current events.
C.He made a fool of himself in chatting.
D.He liked enquiring personal information.
27.What does the author learn from his experience
A.Hurry makes waste.
B.Understanding each other is vital.
C.Sometimes fast is just too fast.
D.Trust is the bridge of communication.
C
We normally think of bacteria as our enemies. But they aren’t all bad. Our bodies are full of them and it turns out we can’t live without them. From the moment we’re born, we acquire, and develop an internal ecosystem of symbiotic bacteria and other microbes (微生物) -they are interdependent players in our body. In fact, there are roughly as many microbial cells in our bodies as human cells. This microbial world is called our microbiome
While some microbes can make us ill, we need our microbiome to bined, they are every bit as essential as our heart, our lungs, or our brain. Most of the microbiome is found in our gut (肠道). They are essential for digestion and help regulate hormones and boost our immune system.
A healthy collection of microbes seems to be vital for our well-being, protecting against some of the biggest health threats. On the other hand, having an unhealthy microbiome may be a contributing factor for many common diseases. Our modern lifestyles, western diets and overuse of antibiotics might all be having a harmful effect on our internal ecology.
So how do you develop a healthy microbiome in the gut Well, it seems that the more diverse your microbial population is, the better. And the best way to increase your diversity is to eat a wide range of plant-based foods. Research shows that people who have at least 30 plant-based elements in their diet every week have a wider range of bacteria in their gut, and that’s linked to better weight management, better heart heath and better mental health. One easy way to boost your numbers is to add a teaspoon of mixed seeds to your breakfast.
The influence of your gut microbes goes a lot further than you might think. In the last 20 years, we’ve learned that they communicate constantly with the brain, perhaps even having control over your mood and emotions.
28.Which can best replace the underlined word symbiotic in the first paragraph
A.Coexisting. B.Beneficial. C.Special. D.Complicated.
29.Which statement might the author agree with
A.Plant-based diets make people healthier.
B.Microbiome is more important than our brain.
C.There's some link between the diversity of bacteria and health.
D.The overuse of antibiotics leads to distinct increase in microbiome.
30.What might be discussed after the last paragraph
A.Examples of gut microbes.
B.Gut microbes and mental welling-being.
C.Interactions of microbes in our body.
D.Ways to identify beneficial gut microbes.
31.What's the best title for the passage
A.Gut microbes: Fighters in the body
B.The microbiome: A cure of all diseases
C.Gut microbes: Protectors of mental health
D.The microbiome: A contributor to our health
D
Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest—an area about the size of Iceland—because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones. By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density, while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’ any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.”
32.Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research
A.To grow more trees.
B.To protect plant diversity.
C.To reduce tree losses.
D.To predict forest disappearance.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research
A.Its theoretical basis. B.Its key procedures.
C.Its scientific evidence. D.Its usual difficulties.
34.What does the finding suggest about the plant materials
A.The hormone levels affect their rigidity.
B.They are better than naturally grown plants.
C.Their cells’ shapes mainly rely on their density.
D.Their growth speed determines their characteristics.
35.Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain
A.It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.
B.It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.
C.It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry.
D.It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.

The days when art was an Olympic sport
Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition 36 In the first year, Walter Winans became the first and the only Olympian to win medals for both art and sports. Despite this seemingly optimistic start, the idea of the arts being included in the Olympic Games soon met with disinterest, finally resulting in the removal of the art competition from the Olympic Games.
37
The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline(项目).
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today
For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics. 38 Having artists of average quality competing while only the most competent athletes were allowed to compete created a dramatic divide and gave the impression that the arts were not as important as sports.
Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter. 39 Limiting the subjects also contributed to making the arts part of the Olympic Games boring to the general public.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance, making it easy to determine who is the winner. 40 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the arts part becoming a non-competitive exhibition that ran for the duration of the Olympic Games.
A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline
B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games
C.This rule made the objects produced seem really boring.
D.The arts, on the other hand, are not quite so easy to judge
E.However, the arts part of the Olympics Games was soon abandoned
F.This means that many famous artists were banned from participating.
G.For 36 years, from 1912 to 1948, artists participated in the Olympic Games.

On Sunday,Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing with his father at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. They had a wonderful day and decided to drive home to Massachusetts after a final run. They took a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they split up to go down in different trails. When the father finished his run, he headed to the parking lot to wait for his son. However, Nicholas never showed up.
It turned out that a fierce snowstorm had swept into the area as Nicholas was on his way down. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path and ventured down the west side of the mountain. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost and all alone. His way back to the ski trails was blocked. What's worse, he didn't have any food or water with him, let alone his cell phone or other supplies. The sun began to sink and he was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about Bear Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild that he used to watch on TV. In the show, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to help himself out. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop moving around. He needed the energy, and the winds weren't as strong in the valley where he stood as they were up on the mountain. Plus, there was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to seek shelter from the freezing wind and snow. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
When evening came, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate some snow and drank some water from nearby stream so that he wouldn't dehydrate (脱水)。 Then he returned to his cave and slept.
Paragraph 1:
When Nicholas didn't show up, his father realized there must be something wrong.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day,Nicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile.

M: Good morning. This is Michael Jones here with the 10: 00 News Report. Earlier this week, we heard about Milton, the dog that traveled over 3,000 miles to be reunited with his family. When the Johnson family moved from California to New York, they couldn’t find their dog and they were sad to leave him behind. About a month later, Milton showed up at their doorstep in New York. We cannot believe how far this dog traveled! The family will be doing an interview in the studio tomorrow morning. In other news, there’s been an outbreak of car thefts in Orange County this week. About ten cars have been stolen from outside their owners’ homes since Monday. If you see or hear anything, please call 911. About ten people found themselves stuck on aroller coaster after it broke down at the Six Flags theme park on Tuesday in Union City. The victims swung upside down for around three minutes as staff worked to restart the roller coaster. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Six Flags has said that they check their rides very seriously, and that this was simply an unfortunate accident. That’s it for the news. When we come back from a commercial break, Michelle Smith will be here with the weather report.

B
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.C

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.D

由第四段“And the best way to increase your diversity is to eat a wide range of plant-based foods. Research shows that people who have at least 30 plant-based elements in their diet every week have a wider range of bacteria in their gut, and that’s linked to better weight management, better heart heath and better mental health.(增加多样性的最好方法是吃各种各样的植物性食物。研究表明,每周饮食中至少含有30种植物性元素的人肠道细菌种类更广,这与更好的体重管理、心脏健康和心理健康有关)”可知,每周食用至少30种植物元素的人,他们的肠道中有更多种类的细菌,而细菌的种类越多,与更多的体重管理,更好的心脏健康,更好的精神健康相关。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。由文中最后一段“The influence of your gut microbes goes a lot further than you might think. In the last 20 years, we’ve learned that they communicate constantly with the brain, perhaps even having control over your mood and emotions.(肠道微生物的影响比你想象的要大得多。在过去的20年里,我们已经了解到它们不断地与大脑交流,甚至可能控制你的情绪和情绪)”可知,下文作者可能会写肠道微生物对于人类的精神健康的影响。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“We normally think of bacteria as our enemies.

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.B

【答案】36.G 37.A 38.F 39.C 40.D

For centuries, globalization was largely shaped by the sea. While Western nations rapidly developed through colonial expansion (殖民扩张), landlocked nations were trapped 56 a cycle of poverty
Over the past decade, a trans formative initiative 57 (launch) to break this cycle and is recovering the economies of inland countries—the Belt and Road Initiative (“一带一路”), 58 was established in 2013. This network has brought together the economies of East Asia and developed Europe with the vast hinterland countries, 59 (result) in increased economic and trade exchanges, the growth of booming cities, and the emergence of a new center of global economic growth.
By tackling infrastructure differences in developing countries, 60 initiative is helping break obstacles that have long limited their development. The China-Laos Railway realizes 61 the Lao people long dreamed of—transforming their country from a landlocked one into a land-linked center. It has also facilitated the 62 (adopt) of clean energy in Africa, helping it avoid the pollution 63 (associate) with Western industrialization.
The Belt and Road Initiative has attracted the participation of more than three-quarters of countries 64 (global), substantially improving the lives of 30% of the world’s population. For China, everything these countries gain from 65 (it) help is a gain for the world.
56.in 57.has been launched 58.which 59.resulting 60.the 61.what 62.adoption 63.associated 64.globally 65.its
be trapped in“被困于……”,为固定搭配,故填in。
故填has been launched。
故填which。
故填the。
故填its。

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear from you. In your letter, you asked me about my future career plans. First of all, thank you for your concern. My dream career is to be a life-saving doctor. I have had this ambition since I was a child, especially during the current epidemic, when I saw those medical workers leaving their families and children behind to go to the frontline at the risk of personal safety, which inspired my determination to become a doctor. In order to realize this dream, I must study hard and be admitted to the ideal medical university with excellent results.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Nicholas didn't show up, his father realized there must be something wrong. The father contacted the police, and a search team was gathered to look for the missing teenager. Although the weather condition was poor and the wind was still fierce, they didn't lose hope of finding Nicholas alive. However, they knew the clock was ticking, and Nicholas stood a better chance of survival the earlier they found him.The team split up,and one of the searchers who knew the area better decided to sweep a mountain trail he used to hike up.
The next day, Nicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile. He went out and followed the sound to find help. He had walked for about a mile when he heard someone calling his name. He moved towards the sound, and sure enough,a few minutes later, he came face to face with the searcher. Despite feeling weak,Nicholas was generally in a good condition, and he was really happy as he was carried back to the ski resort to reunite with his family.
救援队出去搜索:look for/ search/ lose hope of/find/ sweep a mountain trail

I’m glad to hear from you. In your letter, you asked me about my future career plans. First of all, thank you for your concern. My dream career is to be a life-saving doctor. I have had this ambition since I was a child, especially during the current epidemic, when I saw those medical workers leaving their families and children behind to go to the frontline at the risk of personal safety, which inspired my determination to become a doctor. In order to realize this dream, I must study hard and be admitted to the ideal medical university with excellent results.

Paragraph 2:
The next day,Nicholas heard the sound of a snowmobile.
