Sleep is something we all do. But some people need to sleep more than others. Babies sleep most of the time. Children in school sleep about ten to twelve hours a night. Most adults sleep only seven or eight hours. All parts of our bodies have to rest after they work.. Our arms need a rest after we lift heavy thing, When we run fast, our legs work hard. They get tired. We have to rest them. Our brains workhard, too. We can sit quite still and rest our arms andlegs. But our brains aren't resting. They go right on thinking as long as weare awake.
Our brains slow down a bit when we sleep and dream. Instead of thinking wide-awake thoughts, our brains make up dreams. Some dreams are very pleasing. Some are not. Most of thetime we forget them when we wake up.
Scientists have tried to find out what would happen if people were not allowed to sleep. They asked some people not to go to bed. The people stayed up all night and all the next day. They stayed up the next night too,and the day after. They played games, but they made mistakes. They forgot things. The people grew rude and mean. They became angry with their friends. Finally they were too tired to stand up. When they sat down, they fell asleep.
Scientists have found that if people are not allowed to sleep and to dream, they act in an unusual way. But we do know that we need it to stay well. So tonight have a goodsleep. Lie down under the covers. Shut your eyes. Let your thoughts wander.Soon you'll stop thinking. You'll be asleep.
A. It was hard for their tired brains to work.
B. When we are awake, they help us pay attention to the worldaround us

Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing abilities.
(compare) with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. we persist in this practice, gradually we'll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many difficulties. In the first place, it often happens we have trouble finding appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. (second), there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. it is extremely hard for us to put them into English properly.
As far as I am concerned, my (suggest) is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something (beat) us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is great use to keep a diary in English for development of our writing skills.

Busy ! Busy!
In a study of general managers in industry, JohnKotter reported that many of them worked 60 to 65 hours per week—whichtranslates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to workdifficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy andstrength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.

The Lost Rules of Etiquette
Etiquette, or good manners, used to be the glue that held society together. Sadly, these days it has mostly gone by the wayside. This list is several best rules of etiquette that have now disappeared.
Opening the Door
In days gone by, a gentleman would always open doors for ladies. This has now almost entirely disappeared and it is pot entirely the fault of the men. I have seen women laugh at men for opening a door for them. They seem tobe confusing manners with chauvinism(大男子主义).
Writing Thank-You Notes
In days gone by, whenever a personreceived a gift, they would write a thank-you note as soon as possible. Parents would sit children down after a birthday or Christmas and coach them in theirfirst thank-you note. It is a shame that gift giving has now become a virtualobligation and the idea of a thank-you note would be laughed at.

We seem to have completely lost theconcept of correct timing when it comes to parties these days.
After all, aparty normally has a guest of honor-this is usually the oldest woman present. It was considered extremely rude in the past to leave a party before the guestof honor-and once the guest of honor left, it was a signal to all that theyshould begin their own preparations to leave.
A. Arriving on Time.
B. Leaving at the Right Time.
C. People leave with various excuses.
D. It enabled people to get on well with each other.
E. This rule was true even if the giverwas a relative.
F. It could be the lady they weredriving, or a stranger.
G. We've thrown away the concept of aguest of honor at will.

So when my friends invited me (go)for a long weekend camping withoutthe cell service, I thought this was (exact)what I needed. Here's how (keep)away from my phone for 48 hours changedme and my way of life.
Without my phone, I (fall) asleep listening to the songs offrogs and crickets. In the morning, I woke upenergy.Sitting by the river, riding a bike, or singing theold songs, I (true)enjoyed what I was doing.
I felt free without my phone at weekend camp, changed me completely. I listened to what my body wanted instead of what my phone was telling me to do.

A. The mistaken belief
B. The need for tolerance
C. Unpunctuality at dinners
D. Punctuality and confidence
E. Self-discipline and punctuality
F. Avoid anxiety by being punctual
1
There is the belief that, if you arrive at an appointment late, you will be considered important. This is a mistaken view. Being unpunctua
l, we are not respectful of others ; we are interfering (扰乱)with another man's time. We must realise that keeping appointments or being punctual is a contract that is silently agreed and we are expected to respect this contract. It is only natural that we lose faith, trust and confidence in a person who is tardy(延迟的).
2.
To be punctual one has to have self-discipline(自律), and the lack of it affects others. A school boy or girl is unpunctual because he or she does not have the necessary human virtue of self-discipline. It is also a mark of disrespect for a system or an institution. Unpunctual people seldom realise that their habit cause problems to others. A salesman who is not punctual may not make a sale if he arrives late for an appointment. If one is late for a job interview, it is not likely that he will get the job.
3.
Being punctual, we can avoid anxiety. Imagine the anxiety if you do not want to be considered unpunctual. You will be anxious if you
set out for a dinner late. The person who sets out late might be careless in driving. He will ignore traffic rules. A traffic jam, flat tyres, etc.
can delay him further. Happy and calm is the man who takes all these possibilities into consideration and arrives at the appointment either
early or on time.
4.
Many of those who attend dinners are notorious (声名狼藉的)for unpunctuality. They ignore the appointed time and leave their homes only after the fixed time. They are indifferent to the inconvenience caused to others. If the self-centred guest arrives late, the nine others at the table set for ten will have to wait. The host is put in an unpleasant situation and this man seldom thinks of the inconvenience caused to all -the waiters, the management staff, etc. It is necessary for us to think of others and be considerate to them.
5.
However, we cannot always be intolerant (无法容忍的) of tardiness, for ordinary living requires some tolerance. There can be a busy executive who fights to keep to his schedule. Such a person may be forgiven if he is late, but not those who are deliberately late to create impression.
In modern society, punctuality is a necessary virtue. It is a recognition of the importance of other people.

30.请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
Should I live in the city or the suburbs
There are three different kinds of areas you
can live in: urban, suburban, and rural. You can describe living in a rural area
as living out in the sticks or the county This type of living is seen as idyllic(田园生活的)for those seeking reprieve(暂时缓解)from crowds.
Rural areas generally have small, self -sustaining populations.
Urban living is city living: active nightlife,
full of noise, sophisticated public transit system and sometimes small and expensive
city apartments. Urban areas tend to be densely(密集地)populated
and have more intense traffic and pollution as a result.
For those seeking an intermediary between urban
and rural living, the suburbs might be just the thing. Suburbs are large residential
areas away from the core of town yet close enough to the city center.
Can you afford to live in the city
Choosing whether to live in the city or the
suburbs is often a matter of budget—where can you afford to live By and large,
living in the city is more expensive than living in the suburbs, though that's not
always the case. For instance, in Las Vegas, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and
a few other cities, suburban living is not always better on your wallet.
Your lifestyle influences your happiness in
the city or suburbs.
For someone who enjoys five-star restaurants,
vibrant(充满活力的)nightlife, and fast-paced
living, residing in an urban hub is a dream come true. On the other hand, if you
find crowds and tons of noise unbearable, then a large city might feel like purgatory(炼狱).
Your lifestyle is one of the primary considerations
in deciding where you ought to live. If you are into fishing, hiking, and spending
time outdoors, then realize that you may have to drive several hours to enjoy your
hobbies if you choose city living.
Is your career better suited for
the city or suburbs
Your career should also strongly influence your
choice about whether to live in the city or in the suburbs. For example, if your
job is in landscape, you might find it difficult to find work in the city because
there is not a high demand for landscape artists. The fact of the matter is that
most city homes don't have large yards with grass to cut, and competition for landscaping
contracts is probably fierce. Similarly, a business executive(主管)may find that the suburbs do not offer the convenience afforded by city
living.
The debate of whether to live in the suburbs
or the city is long lasting and never-ending. When it all boils down to it, it is
a matter of preference and budget, so go with your gut(决心)and you'll make the right choice.

The
Next Frontier: Using Thought to Control Machines
Technologies are often billed as
transformative. For William Kochevar, the term is justified. Mr Kochevar is
paralysed below the shoulders after a cycling accident, yet has managed to feed
himself by his own hand. This progress is partly thanks to
electrodes, implanted in his right arm, which stimulate muscles. But the real
magic lies higher up. Mr Kochevar can control his arm using the power of
thought. His intention to move is in neural(神经的) activity in his motor region; these
signals are detected by implants in his brain and into commands to activate the
electrodes in his arms.
An ability to decode thought in this way
may sound like science fiction. But brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) like the
BrainGate system used by Mr Kochevar provide evidence that mind-control can
work. Researchers are able to tell what words and images people have heard and
seen from neural activity alone. Information can also be encoded and used to
stimulate the brain. Over 300, 000 people have cochlear(耳蜗的) implants, which help them to hear by sound into electrical signals and
sending them into the brain. Scientists have " " data into monkeys heads,
instructing them to perform actions via electrical pulses.
As our Technology
Quarterly in this issue explains, the pace of research into BCIs and the
scale of its ambition are . Both America's armed forces and
Silicon Valley are starting to focus on the brain. Facebook dreams of
thought-to-text . Kernel, a startup, has $100m to spend
on neurotechnology. Elon Musk has formed a firm called Neuralink; he thinks
that, if humanity is to survive the arrival of artificial intelligence, it
needs an upgrade. Entrepreneurs imagine a world in which people can communicate
using thoughts, with each other and with machines, or acquire abilities, such as hearing at very
high frequencies.
These powers, if they ever materialise, are
decades away. But well before then, BCIs could open the door to wonderful new . Imagine stimulating the visual region
to help the blind, making new neural in stroke victims or monitoring the
brain for signs of depression. By turning the firing of neurons into a resource
to be used, BCIs may change the idea of what it means to be human.

Quinoa, of which both the seeds and leaves can be edible, is a crop native to the Andes Mountains. It took off in richer countries in the 1990s after NASA researchers recommended it as part of a potential space-colony diet. Over the past decade, quinoa, one of the leading crops that 33. on Bolivia's high plains, 13,000 ft. above sea level, has become a premier product for foodies, health nuts and fair-trade enthusiasts. The gluten-free staple - in Bolivia it is produced solely by small-scale farmers and 90% is 34. - often decorates plates from celebrity chefs like Giada De Laurentiis and Bobby Flay and has inspired entire cookbooks 35. to Salads, soups and stuffing boasting its nutritional goodness. It's an unaccustomed role for such a humble crop, which poorer Bolivians often grew and ate instead of buying rice. "It was always comida para los indios (food for Indians)," says Benjamin Huarachi, a member of the board of Bolivia's largest quinoa growers' association, "Today it's food for the world's richest."
It also provides food for thought about the 36. that arise when rich nations try to support farmers in the developing world. The colorful tall tufts(丛生植物), which 37. one of the healthiest foods on the planet, have become Huarachi's golden goose. As global food prices have risen, the price of quinoa has tripled in the past five years, to $1 per lb., a benefit to growers in the poorest region of South America's poorest country. "Now we've got tractors for our fields and parabolic antennas(抛物面天线)for our homes," he says.
And trouble with the neighbors. In an economy dependent on unsteady commodity 38. , quinoa has made farmers richer, but it has also become an out-of-reach luxury for many Bolivians and 39. violent conflict. In February hundreds of farmers clashed over prime quinoa-growing territory, and dozens were injured. The high price of quinoa has 40. cut domestic consumption, sparking concerns about malnutrition, with many farmers scrambling to export all their quinoa, even supplementing their diets with foods like pasta.
The series of problems raises concerns about whether the satisfying act of buying fair trade—which aims to help small farmers gain 41. to higher-end consumers abroad—can do more harm than good for the poor in developing countries. "When you transform a food into a commodity, there's 42. breakdown in social relations and high environmental cost," says Tanya Kerssen, a food-policy analyst for the food and development institute Food First, based in Oakland, Calif.

 49. the flowers die, however, many people might want to throw the plant away. But not so fast! You might be able to get that orchid to bloom again. In fact, helping an orchid to rebloom is 50. that requires your great efforts while at home because of existing coronavirus restrictions.
With the first flowers gone, Friend-Daniel, an orchid expert at Trader Joe's 51. (sell) plants and flowers like orchids, suggests cutting the stem off at the base and removing the material 52. the plant is growing. Then move the plant to a slightly larger pot filled with fresh moss(苔藓).
Friend-Daniel said that, "New growth should start coming from the middle of the plant within three to four months." It will take 12 months for a fully bloomed flower to show.
Blanche Wagner is another orchid expert at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Their orchid collection is world-famous and dates back to 53. late 1800s.
She gives a simple suggestion for those wanting to rebloom an orchid:
●Care for them when they are not in bloom. The most important time to care for your plants is right after the flowers die.
●The ideal temperature while waiting for new growth is about 29 degrees ●Celsius. Once there is new growth, 54. (keep) the temperature between 21 to 24 degrees Celsius.
●Never let the roots sit in water. This will cause them to rot, and the plant 55. (die).
● 56. color your new blooms are, Hachadourian said the "take-home message" is a good one: "People are reblooming their orchids more than once."

Hacking isn't just for computers and smart
phones. According to a study, scientists have found a way to hack a plant's
genes in order to make it use sunlight more quickly. Someday, the results could
increase the number of food produced around the world.
Scientists used tobacco plants in the study
because it is easy to change the plants' genes. Hacked plants are
larger than normal plants.
Photosynthesis is the word used to describe
how plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make their own food.
Scientists say this is a very slow process. Plants use less than 1 percent of
the energy. But by hacking a plant's genes, the scientists were able to
increase the amount of leaf growth on plants between 14 and 20 percent.
Scientists hacked the plant's protective system. Normally, this system starts
when a plant gets too much sunlight. When the plant senses the light, it
creates more leaves. When the plant is in shade, the protective system is
turned off. But the process is slow.
The new study sped up the process by
changing the plant's genes, the protective system turned on and off more
quickly than normal. As a result, leaf growth on the plants scientists used in
the study increased. Leaf growth on two plants increased by 20 percent, while
leaf growth on a third plant increased by 14 percent. Scientists conducted the
study on tobacco plants. But they think the genetic changes would produce the
same results in corn and rice.
Agriculture professor Tala Awanda said the
study makes sense, but cautioned the yield(产量)might not be quite so high for conventional food crops. Still, she
added in an email, "this study remains a breakthrough,"
(1)Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 1
A.We can find hacking only in digital devices.
B.A plant's genes can be changed by hacking.
C.Hacking has been used in improving food production.

A.Because they are very easy to get.
B.Because their genes are easy to change.
C.Because they are larger than other plants.
D.Because they can absorb sunlight quickly.
(3)What do we know about photosynthesis
A.It helps plants to produce energy.
B.It is regarded as a productive system for plants.
C.It can increase leaf growth on plants by 14 percent.
D.It is made up of sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
(4)We can learn from Paragraph 4 that changing the plants' genes proved _______.
A.useless B.deadly C.effective D.unrealistic
(5)What is Tala Awanda's attitude toward the study
A.Doubtful. B.Neutral. C.Objective. D.Critical.
80.Choose the one that
fits best according to the information given in the passage you have read.
In 1888 an Egyptian farmer digging in the
sand near the village of Istabl Antar uncovered a mass grave. The bodies weren't
human. They were feline — ancient cats that had been mummified(木乃伊化的) and buried in holes in astonishing
numbers. "Not one or two here and there", reported English Illustrated Magazine, "but
dozens, hundreds, hundreds of thousands, a layer of them, a layer thicker than
most coal joints, ten to twenty cats deep. " Some of the linen-wrapped
cats still looked presentable, and a few even had golden faces. Village
children peddled the best ones to
tourists for change; the rest were sold as fertilizer. One ship transported
about 180,000, weighing some 38, 000 pounds, to Liverpool to be spread on the
fields of England.
Those were the days of generously funded
explorations—that dragged through acres of desert in their quest for royal
tombs, and for splendid gold and painted masks to decorate the estates and
museums of Europe and America. The many thousands of mummified animals that
turned up at religious sites throughout Egypt were just things to be cleared
away to get at the good stuff. Few people studied them, and their importance
was generally unrecognized.
In the century since then, archaeology has
become less of a treasure hunt and
more of a science. Archaeologists now realize that much of their sites' wealth
lies in the majority of details about ordinary folks—what they did, what they thought, how
they prayed. And animal mummies are a big part of that.
"They're really displays of daily
life," says Egyptologist Salima Ikram. After peering beneath bandages with
x-rays and cataloguing her findings, she created a gallery for the collection —
a bridge between people today and those of long ago. "You look at these
mummified animals, and suddenly you say, Oh, King So-and-So had a pet. I have a
pet. And instead of being at a distance of 5,000-plus years, the ancient
Egyptians become clearer and closer to us."
(1)Which of the following words has the closest meaning to "peddled"(paragraph 1)
A.modernized B.displayed C.illustrated D.demonstrated
(2)Why was archaeology once referred to as a "treasure hunt "(paragraph 3)
A.In the royal tombs, there were many treasures made of silver and gold.
B.Animal mummies could be made into fertilizer which is very valuable.
C.It was hard to find animal mummies since they were buried under dirt.
D.People sought the remains of ancient Egypt merely for their material value.
(3)Which of the following is TRUE about Salima Ikram
A.She wishes to establish the continuity of pets over history.
B.She believes that studying the remains can help modern society relate to the past.
C.She wants to identify the King's personal belongings and classify them.
D.She doubts if current society will understand the significance of Egyptian remains.
(4)This article probably encourages the readers to _____________.
A.value the past by studying the remains left behind by our ancestors
B.make full use of the remains our ancestors have left behind
C.understand that animal mummies are more important than gold and masks
D.become more sensitive to the ancient lifestyle of our ancestors
