"Ten steps from the gate and twenty steps from rose bushes," A man spoke at a low voice in Jimmy’s dream one night. "There is treasure there!" So the next day Jimmy began dig. He dug before the hole was not any deeper and the dirt pile was at its highest. He sighed, "I’m very tired to dig anymore." Then he discovered anything. It was a dog bone. He thought, "That man lied to me!" But when Jimmy’s mother saw what he has done, she clapped with her hands and smiled. "Oh, thank you, Jimmy. I always wanted another rose bush planting just there. Here’s $5.00 with digging that hole."

Most of us are expecting high-quality customer service in our daily life, but actually enjoying a happy purchase is easier said than done.
Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of a retail store, but instead they will alert their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers—and anyone who will listen.
Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde Group and Wharton School.
“Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers,” said Paula Courtney, President of the Verde Group. “The store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement.”
On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four others, and will no longer visit the specific store. For every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative review. The resulting “snowball effect” can be disastrous to retailers.
According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers.
The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered (塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock items, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople.
During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved parking problems by getting moonlighting (业余兼职的) local police to work as parking attendants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty parking spaces. This guidance eliminated the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided confrontation between those eyeing the same parking space.
Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions.
Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers.
“Retailers who’re responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren’t so friendly,” said Professor Stephen Hoch. “Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help.”
Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when they have no idea what is wrong.
1. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints?
  A. Most customers won’t bother to complain even if they have had unhappy experiences.
  B. Customers have no easy access to store managers.
  C. Few customers believe the service will be improved.
  D. Customers would rather relate their unhappy experiences to people around them.
2. Shop owners often hire moonlighting police as parking attendants so that shoppers________.
  A. can stay longer browsing in the store B. won’t have trouble parking their cars
  C. won’t have any worrier about security D. can find their cars easily after shopping
3. What contributes most to smoothing over issues with customers?
  A. Design of store layout. B. Hiring of efficient employees
  C. Huge supply of goods for sale. D. Manners of the salespeople.
4. To achieve better shopping experiences, customers are advised to ________.
  A. exert pressure on stores to improve their service
  B. voice their dissatisfaction to store managers directly
C. settle their disputes with stores in a diplomatic
D. shop around and make comparisons between stores

Have you ever played the video dance game? Now such games are used to help lose weight!
Like many other teenage boys, Jones loved sports. But at 5 feet, 175 pounds, he found his weight a trouble. His doctor wanted him to lose 50 pounds so that he may catch up with the football game by the end of summer.
Jones chose the popular dance?revolution video game at home to increase his activity. He had lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10!
The health study is being done by an insurance?company, which hopes that game will lead to better health and lower costs. “Obesity claims (肥胖索赔) last year cost us $77 million. We have to cut those costs”, said a member of the insurance group. The company provides a game console (游戏主机), a dance mat and?software for the six-month, $ 60,000 study.
The study is more than commercial thing of an insurance company. It is widely supported by physical education and health professionals.
In West Virginia, 43% of the nearly 6,000 children examined for heart disease risk were considered over-weighted; more than 25% were too fat. “We are in a crisis of childhood obesity not only in West Virginia but in America,” said a researcher.
Researchers are looking at the potential for improving effects by using the game. A teacher in West Virginia has been using the video game in her classes since last fall. She reported that the game does improve heart health as well as eye-hand coordination, and her students take the video game as a great alternative to jumping rope or ball games.
The US Education Department is putting the game in 20 schools to control childhood obesity. Well, are you going to try such a game to dance away your extra weight?
5. The underlined part is trying to tell us __________.
A. the study is more important than the money of the insurance company

C. the study involved many insurance companies
D. it’s not only the insurance company that is concerned about the study
6. It can be inferred that __________.
A. in West Virginia 25% of the children were too fat
B. the government and society think highly of the game

D. the US Education Department is promoting the game all over the country
7. The most suitable title for the?passage is _________.
A. Dance Away Your Weight B. Play the Video Dance Game C. Solve the Problem of Obesity D. A Magic Video Dance Game

Are you a saver or spender?
A penny saved is a penny earned. 16 “Putting money away for a rainy day.” is another way to talk about saving for the future.
People who hate to spend money are known as “tightwads”, while those who like to get the most value for their money are called “thrifty”. 17 A spendthrift is someone who spends wastefully. People like that are often said to spend money “like a drunken sailor” or “like there is no tomorrow”.
In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. 18 Credit unions are cooperatives for people who have some kind of connection. For example, the members might work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are nonprofit organizations.
Credit unions, banks and other financial institutions pay interest on savings accounts. But the rates are low. Certificates of deposit (定期存款) pay higher returns. With Certificates of deposit, people agree not to withdraw the money for a certain period of time. This term could be anywhere from a few months to several years. 19 People can withdraw the money early but they have to pay a penalty.(罚金)
In many countries, people have been saving less over the years. It is reported that in 2000, Americans had a household savings rate of 7%. 20 Many European countries have higher rates, but Americans save more than families in Japan.
People are willing to save money for the future.
Before gold, even kings take off their hats.
This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money.
Longer terms, and large amounts, pay higher interest.
This year the rate is expected to be a little more than four percent.
These include banks and credit unions.
A thrifty person is different from a spendthrift.

For most people, graduation is an exciting day – the culmination (顶点) of years of hard work. My graduation day... was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago, family and friends had traveled far to watch our class walk across the stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy go from bad to worse during my senior year. We graduates had degrees, but very limited prospects (前景). I hadn’t secured a job, and I knew that the next day, when my lease (租约) ended, I would no longer have a place to call home.
The weeks ahead weren’t easy. I gathered up everything I couldn’t carry and put it into storage. Then, because I had no opportunities in my small university town, I packed up my car and drove to California to find work. But what I thought would take a week dragged into two, then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the same spot as I was before. The due date to begin paying back my student loans was creeping even closer.
Have you ever felt utter dread? That feeling became constant in my life. The most frustrating part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress.
I channeled my frustration into a children’s book. Beyond the River was the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish who refused to give up.
And then one day, with no writing degree or contacts in the writing world – just hard work and perseverance – I was offered a publishing contract for my first book. After that, things were in place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was hired shortly after.
Often our dreams lie in waiting just a little further upstream, and all we need is the courage to push beyond the river.

A.After he got his first publishing contract.
B.After he began to write his book Beyond the river.
C.After he finished his book Beyond the river.
D.After he got hired by the Walt Disney Company.
24.What is the main message the story intends to convey?

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word “rubbish” could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.
The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant(发电厂) for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.
Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally , the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.

In our daily life, we have developed a lot of habits, such as, eating habit, study habit, reading habit, etc. However, taking the time to develop a sleep habit is probably the last thing on your mind and some sleep advice simply can’t be forgotten. 16 .
Watching TV until you fall asleep
It has nothing to do with what you watch —TV news isn’t a better pre-sleep choice than TV series. 17 . The bright light keeps you awake all the night. So even if you nod off (in front of the TV, for example), you probably won’t stay asleep for long.
Sleeping with pets
18 . They get comfortable, and then they move. This goes on all night, and whether you admit it or not, it interrupts your ability to get the level of sleep needed to feel rested.
Eating fatty, heavy foods too close to bedtime
Heartburn (烧心,胃痛) strikes anyone of any age, but it’s the most common GI disorder (胃肠失调) in older adults. If you’ve ever tried to go to sleep after eating a fatty meal, you’ve probably found the discomfort of stomach preventing you from falling asleep or staying asleep.
19
Remember how poorly you sleep when you have a fever—turning over and over again, never really feeling rested? Well, heavy exercise too close to bedtime has the same effect —--- it raises your body temperature so that your sleep is disturbed until your body temperature drops to normal, which may take several hours. Accepting snoring (打呼噜) as normal sleep behavior
Snoring may seem as common as breathing, but it’s considered the biggest sleep killer, and it’s linked to several causes: sleeping on your back, being overweight, having a cold, drinking, or taking drugs. 20 . For the snorer, it disturbs sleep by awakening him/her every so often in order to breathe normally. For the partner, the noise can be unbearable.
A. Exercising heavily too close to bedtime
B. Here are some bad habits you need to get rid of
C. Most seriously, it’s caused by a dangerous illness
D. Here are some suggestions you’ll need to follow
E. Pets sleep most of the day, and they move a lot when sleeping
F. Reducing your body temperature before bedtime
G. Rather it’s the TV’s bright light that is the criminal

Next time you hear a funny joke you’d better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn’t always the best?medicine. Sometimes it can even be harmful. Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says: “We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their heart, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who’d?dislocated their?jaws?or burst their lungs.”
It seems that laughing can be?no laughing matter. But?it’s not all?doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to?lose weight, for example. Yes, that’s right: laugh and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: “You use energy when you laugh, you move your?diaphragm(横膈膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful.”
According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn up to 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you’d use up about 2,000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don’t do that or you might end up with a?painful?jaw.?Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a?funny?way.
But I don’t want to finish this article leaving you feeling?desperate. Laughter comes naturally for most of us. Babies begin to laugh at around 3-6 months. So give in to your?sense of humour?and keep smiling. Life is short anyway.
28. Laughing too much may cause the following harmful results EXCEPT_________.
A. heart stop B. diaphragm movement
C. lung burst D. jaw dislocation
29. The underlined phrase “doom and gloom” in Paragraph 2 probably means_______.
A. hopeless B. funny C. painful D. nervous
30. How many calories can you use if you laugh for half a day?

A. Uninterested. B. Disapproving. C. Worried. D. Favorable.

I teach geography at UNLV three times per week. Last Monday, at the beginning of class, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been so good. He had his wisdom teeth removed. The young man then asked me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. “I choose to be cheerful.” I said. Then I told them a story.
In addition to teaching here at UNLV, I also teach out at the?community college?in Henderson, 17 miles down the?freeway?from where I live. One day I drove those 17 miles to Henderson. I exited the freeway and turned onto College Drive. I only had to drive another quarter mile down the road to the college. But just then my car died and wouldn’t start again. So I left my car there and marched down the road to the college.
As soon as I got there I called AAA (美国汽车协会)and arranged for a tow truck (拖车) to meet me at my car after class. The secretary in the office asked me what had happened. “This is my lucky day.” I replied, smiling.
“Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?” She was puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway but it didn’t.” I replied, “Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance from here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class.” The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class. So ended my story.
I scanned the sixty faces in my class at UNLV. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student’s observation that I was cheerful. An Indian wise man once said, “Who you are speaks louder to me than anything you can say.” I suppose it must be so.
32. Why did the author tell his students the story?
A. To share his lucky experience. B. To make his class more lively.
C. To draw all students’ attention. D. To encourage his students to be positive.
33. What happened to the author on his way to the community college?
A. He parked his car in a perfect place.
B. He called AAA for a tow truck to meet him.
C. He covered the last quarter mile on foot.
D. He drove off the freeway at a wrong exit.
34. By saying “it wasn’t the story at all”, the author means that_______.
A. His story is not convincing
B. He shouldn’t have told the story
C. His attitude to life has inspired the students
D. His story is not as interesting as expected
35. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Easier said than done. B. You are what you choose.
C. Behind bad luck comes good luck. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.
C
Here are tips for a successful speech from a professional speechwriter:
No speech should last more than 20 minutes. 36 The Sermon on the Mount, a collection of sayings and teachings of?Jesus, for example, lasted hardly more than three minutes.
Focus on one topic. We’re human and tend to have lots of thoughts, opinions and ideas. You have to make proper selection. 37 Include and expand only those that explain and support your viewpoint(观点).
38 It’s important to remember that your words must be hearable and understandable the first time out.
Humour is vital. 39 Ronald Reagan always wanted to joke at the start of a speech because he needed the quick victory of laughter. It helped him relax. It also helped the audience relax.
Don’t forget to say thanks. You should always, at the beginning of the speech, thank the person who invited you and introduced you. 40 While you’re doing it, the audience gets a chance to daydream and settle down. They’re going to daydream at some point anyway, and it may as well be before you get to the heart of your remarks.
A. Choose your words carefully.
B. And saying thanks at the beginning has a practical purpose.
C. First you have to work out what you’re going to say.
D. Every speech needs it, and you need it, too, probably at the beginning.
E. Stick to one subject-the future of the soccer club, for example.
F. This process takes time, so start once you begin thinking about the speech.
G. The more important the message is, the less time it requires to say it.

III. 语法填空
Many students may feel 61 (stress) because of their parents. Most parents have good intentions, 62 some of them aren’t very helpful with the problems their sons and daughters have in 63 (adjust)to college, and a few of them seem to go out of their way to add to their children’s 64 (difficulty).
For one thing, parents are often not aware of the kinds of problems their children face. They don’t realize that the 65 (compete) is stronger, that the required standards of work are 66 (high), and that their children may not be prepared for 67 change. They may be upset by their children’s poor grades. At their kindest, they may 68 (gentle) ask why John or Mary isn’t doing better, whether he or she is trying as hard as he or she should, and so on. At their worst, they may threaten 69 (take) their children out of college or cut off living expenses.
Sometimes parents think it right and natural that they determine 70 their children do with their lives. They forget that everyone is different and that each person must develop in his or her own way.

A
Katie was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with Katies; she was never ever a discipline(纪律) problem. I just couldn’t imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. "Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happened to your homemade lunch?" I asked. "I lose it," she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, "I don't believe you, Katie. " She didn't care. "Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?" I took a new track. "No. I just lose it," she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.
The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name on the bag said "Katie".
Now I understood and I talked to Katie. It seemed that the new boy never brought a lunch, and he wouldn't go to the lunch line for a free lunch. He had told Katie his secret and asked her not to tell anyone that his parents wanted him to get a free lunch at school. Katie asked me not to tell her parents, but I drove to her house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I had never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn't care that her parents and teacher were disappointed in her. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared.
Katie still buys lunch every day at school. And every day, as she heads out of the door, her mom hands her a delicious homemade lunch.

22. Why did Katie eat school lunch instead of her homemade lunch every day?
A. She lost her homemade lunch.
B. She had her homemade lunch stolen.
C. She didn't like the taste of her homemade lunch.
D. She gave her homemade lunch to a hungry boy.
23. What was Katie's parents' reaction to the truth about the lunch?
A. They were very angry. B. They were proud of Katie.

D. Katie stopped buying lunch at school after her secret was discovered.

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.
Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of running after a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox, the kill it or a hunter shoots it.
People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport. They wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly are expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.
It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox-hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who are against fox-hunting, because they think it is brutal(残暴的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of conflict between hunters and hunt opponents (阻止者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly opponents discourage the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.
Noisy conflicts between hunters and opponents have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as running after foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox-hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party member of Parliament(英国议会), Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.
28. Wealthy people in Britain have been hunting foxes to ______.

C. show off their wealth D. limit the fox population

30. A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to ______.
A. protect wild animals like foxes B. control fox-hunting on a large scale
C. prohibit farmers from hunting foxes D. standardize the behavior of fox-hunting
31. What can be inferred from this passage?
A. Limiting the fox population is unnecessary at all.
B. Killing foxes with poison is not allowed by the law.
C. Hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violent.
D. Fox-hunting causes conflicts between hunters and farmers.

IV. 短文改错
The first time I decide to leave home was when I was upon graduation in high school. I was having trouble get along with my parents. I had about fifty dollar in my pockets, and I thought about leaving home. It took me only two weeks away from home while I started to feel homesick. Living on my own is a total different experience for three main reasons: being more responsible, more decisive and more creative. Because of I’m on my own, I get to deal with my duties without being told. I have to be more careful because my parents are not here to give me their advices. In the other hand, I can make my own future plan. I have made rules for me to follow.
