单元概述
【单元内容】
This unit focuses on Australia and attempts to give students a broaden horizon about the country’s geography, food, music, people and animals, which might interest students. Australia is a large country and has as many different signs and features from other places and multi-cultural nature of the population. The history, culture and social organization of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia is another topic that will interest students. Using what they have learnt, students will then give a presentation on something they consider representative of China. The passage goes on to explore some representative animals of Australia in order to activate students’ knowledge of representative animals of China. They will then use what they have learnt to write about an iconic Chinese animal. Finally, students will produce an introduction of their own city or town. It is hoped that students will learn in depth about some countries and cultures that perhaps they had not previously though much about, and that they will be able to use what they have learnt to think and share about China and Chinese culture.

DUJIANGYAN
Originally constructed around 256 BCE by the State of Qin as an irrigation and flood control system, Dujiangyan is a remarkable example of ancient engineering skill and is still in use today. During the Warring States period, people who lived along the banks of the Min River were troubled by annual flooding. Qin governor and irrigation engineer Li Bing investigated the problem thoroughly. He led a team to construct a levee to redirect a portion of the river's flow. Then they cut a channel through Mount Yulei to discharge the excess water. After the system was finished, no more floods occurred. What's more, it made Sichuan one of the most productive agricultural regions in China because the redirected water from the Min River could be used for irrigation. If you visit Dujiangyan, you will see an unusual construction that resembles a fish's mouth. This famous attraction, Yuzui, together with two other important parts, namely, Feishayan and Baopingkou, were scientifically designed to control the waterflow throughout the year. Recognised as a UNESCO heritage site, Dujiangyan has irrigated farms while preventing floods for over 2,000 years.

JOURNEY TO AUSTRALIA
词数:567 文体:说明文 摘自:Crazy English Reader
人的一生不能分成两个半球,但是我们的人生旅程,可以选择去一趟南半球。让我们随着文章的介绍,领略澳大利亚的魅力吧。
Australia’ premier city is the oldest settlement in Australia, the economic powerhouse of the nation and the country's capital, Canberra is everything but name. Built on the shores of the stunning Port Jackson, you would have to die and go to heaven before you see a more spectacular setting for a city. It's a vital, self-regarding metropolis, making itself a melting pot with people from all over the world.
When to Go
The best times to visit are of spring and autumn, especially around March to April or October to November. Sydney is blessed with a temperate climate. Sometimes torrential downpours often break the heat between October and March. Winters are cool rather than cold. Beach lovers unperturbed by the hazards of lizard-skin should come between December and February.
Sydney Harbor
The harbor is the defining characteristic of the city. Its multiple sandstone headlands, dramatic cliffs, rocky islands and stunning bays and beaches, make it one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the world. Officially called Port Jackson, the harbor stretches some 20km inland to join the mouth of the Parramatta River. The most scenic area is on the ocean side of the bridge. The best way to experience the harbour is to go sailing, but if you're lacking nautical skills there are plenty of ways to enjoy it.
Sydney Opera House
Australia's most recognizable icon is dramatically situated on the eastern headland of Circular Quay. The Opera House is so unique that it has been photographed a zillion times, appears on an army of cheap t-shirts, every other Sydney postcard and decorates the frames of Dame Edna's dramatic glasses. The Opera House hosts theatre, classical music, ballet and film, as well as the seasonal opera performances. There is free music on the prow of the Opera House on weekends and a craft market on the forecourt on Sunday.
Circular Quay
Circular Quay is built around Sydney Cove and is considered by many to be the focal point of the city. The first European settlement in Australia grew around the Tank Stream which now runs underground into the harbour here. For many years this was the shipping centre of Sydney, but it's now both a commuting hub and a recreational space, combining ferry quays, a railway station and the Overseas Passenger Terminal with harbour walkways, restaurants, buskers, parks, the Museum of Contemporary Art and, of course, the Sydney Opera House.
Royal National Park
The Royal National Park, 35km south of city, is the oldest gazetted national park in the world. The sea of low scrub which covered the sandstone plateau in the north of the park was devastated by the 1994 bushfires, but the forested river valleys and the beaches were unscathed. The park is dissected by the Hacking River and there are riverside picnic and boat hiring facilities at Audley. There's a spectacular 26km coastal track stretching the length of the park, which is accessible from Bundeena. It passes the lovely lagoon beach at Wattamolla, and the popular surfing spot at Garie Beach. The best views are from the southern boundary of the park overlooking Bulli from the edge of the Illawarra escarpment.
Anyway, you will certainly find this trip to Sydney Australia one of your most memorable experiences in your life. The trip will leave you sweet memories that you would like to share with your family and your friends.

EIFFEL TOWER
词数:328 文体:说明文 摘自:China Daily
埃菲尔铁塔是巴黎的标志之一,被法国人爱称为“铁娘子”,它和纽约的帝国大厦、东京的电视塔同被誉为世界三大著名建筑。让我们了解一下它的历史以及参观要求吧。
Built in 1889 for the Exposition Universelle, the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) has become the main symbol of Paris. It is also the most-visted attraction in the world.
The Eiffel Tower is a wrought iron tower that stands 1,063 ft (324 m) tall. It was designed for the Exposition Universelle, a world fair held in Paris in 1889. It is currently the most famous symbol of Paris.
Origin
Two senior engineers working for the architect and engineer Gustave Eiffel designed the Tower, which was then approved by Eiffel and proposed as the centrepiece for the world fair held in France’s capital, the Exposition Universelle in 1889. Once approved, 250 builders were hired to build the monument, which took over two years to finish.Initially, the Eiffel Tower was subject of controversy. The artists of the period thought the monument to be monstrous, and given its poor profitability, it was suggested on several occasions that they should demolish it.
During World War I, enemy messages were intercepted thanks to the tower radiotelegraphy centre.Currently, the Eiffel Tower is the most-visited monument in the world with over 7 million visitors a year. This is partly due to the popularity of Paris as a tourist destination.
Visiting the Eiffel Tower
If it’s your first time in Paris, going up the Eiffel Tower is a must. Visitors can choose to go up using the Tower lift or the stairs. However, before making your mind up on how you want to visit the monument, it is important to keep in mind that there are 1,665 steps to the top.
If you decide to take the stairs, you can only visit the second floor. Although the stairs admission ticket is cheaper, the difference is not worthwhile and we recommend taking the elevator. The best moment to enjoy the breath-taking views of Paris is early in the morning to avoid the lines or at dusk, when visitors will see Paris lit up.

A NEW DIMENSION OF LIFE
词数:441文体:说明文 摘自:人教版Book7 Unit3
海底世界神秘又梦幻,让我们通过这奇妙的一天,感受海底世界的魅力!
I’m sitting in the warm night air with a cold drink in my hand and reflecting on the day–a day of pure magic! I went snorkelling on the reef offshore this morning and it was the most fantastic thing I have ever done. Seeing such extraordinary beauty, I think every cell in my body woke up. It was like discovering a whole new dimension of life.
The first thing I became aware of was all the vivid colours surrounding me—purples, reds, oranges, yellows, blues and greens. The corals were fantastic—they were shaped like fans, plates, brains, lace, mushrooms, the branches of trees and the horns of deer. And all kinds of small, neat and elegant fish were swimming in and around the corals.
The fish didn’t seem to mind me swimming among them. I especially loved the little orange and White fish that hid in the waving long thin seaweed. And I also loved the small fish that clean the bodies of larger fish—I even saw them get inside their mouths and clean their teeth! It seemed there was a surprise waiting for me around every corner as I explored small caves, shelves and narrow passages with my underwater flashlight: the yellow and green parrotfish was hanging upside down, and sucking tiny plants off the coral with its hard bird-like mouth; a yellow-spotted red sea-slug was sliding by a blue sea-star; a large wise-looking turtle was passing so close to me that I could have touched it.
There were other creatures that I didn’t want to get too close to—an eel with its strong sharp teeth, with only its head showing from a hole, watching for a tasty fish (or my tasty toe!) ; and the giant clam halt buried in some coral waiting for something to swim in between its thick green lips. Then there were two grey reef sharks, each about one and a half metres long, which suddenly appeared from behind some coral. I told myself they weren’t dangerous but that didn’t stop me from feeling scared to death for a moment!
The water was quite shallow but where the reef ended, there was a steep drop to the sandy ocean floor. It marked a boundary and I thought I was very brave when I swam over the edge of the reef and hung there looking down into the depths of the ocean. My heart was beating wildly—I felt very exposed in such deep clear water.
What a wonderful, limitless world it was down there! And what a tiny spot I was in this enormous world!

IS IT ALL KANGAROOS AND SURFING
词数:735 文体:说明文 摘自:北师大版Book4 Unit12
澳大利亚给我们留下的印象就是袋鼠与冲浪,那么澳大利亚就只有袋鼠与冲浪是独特的吗?
Host: Welcome to “Countries of the World”. Today we’re talking about Australia, the land of sunshine and surfing. George and Fiona are two Australians who have joined us for today’s show. So first of all, tell us a bit about yourselves.
George: Hi. Well, I live on an acre of land outside Melbourne but my family actually came here from Greece in the 1980s—in fact, Melbourne is the city with the largest number of Greek people outside Athens! At first, we didn’t feel we belong here, but now we are attached to the land we live on.
Host: Thanks, George. Now here’s Fiona from Sydney.
Fiona: Hello. Australia is my birthplace but my mum came from Scotland and my dad came from France. That’s the great thing about Australian culture ——it’s such a mix of different cultures. The early settlers were mostly English and Irish, but since 1945, the population has become more and more mixed with people from Southern Europe and Asia.
Host: Wow! How do these different cultures affect different aspects of Australian culture
Fiona: Well, for example, we see all these influences in modern Australian cooking. Chefs call it “fusion food”— a brilliant mixture of delicious Southern European food mixed with Southeast Asian food. The desserts are the best—they’re so yummy!
Host: Sounds tasty!
George: And kangaroos are tasty too! In Melbourne, the only place we ever see kangaroos is on the menu in a restaurant. You mainly see kangaroos in the vast area of desert in the middle of Australia. This is a great place for camping but you have to look out for snakes and spiders—Australia has some of the most dangerous in the world.
Host: So do many people live in the desert
George: Not really. There are people who work in the mines, of course. Australia actually exports the most diamonds and coal in the world! And there are also a lot of sheep farms in the desert areas—in fact, I’ve heard that there are seven sheep for every person. But most Australians live on the coast. That’s why surfing is such a popular sport.
Fiona: But it’s not the only sport Australians are fond of. Because the weather’s so good, Australians like being outdoors. Walking, fishing, horse-riding, tennis, golf and sailing are all popular. We take sport very seriously and have produced great Olympic swimmers and top cyclists.
Host: So is Australia all about beach barbecues and surfing What about art and literature
George: Contrary to popular belief, Australia is not a dull place at all for people wanting culture. There’s a really lively cultural scene here. Australia has produced some famous painters and world-class writers.
Fiona: And in Sydney, you’ll find a broad choice of opera, drama, classical concerts, rock concerts —there’s too much choice really! Of course, things are more limited if you live in a small town.
Host: Now, is there anything you don’t like about Australia
Fiona: I can’t bear the way the native Australians have been treated. They are now a minority group and most of them live in terrible conditions while the rest of us are quiet well-off. I think that’s unfair. The government is trying to improve things, but is seems a bit late. I wonder if they’ll ever forgive the way they’ve been treated.
George: I agree with Fiona. The only other thing I’d complain about is the roads outside the cities. Most of them are in pretty poor condition.
Host: Well, you’ve given me a great preview of Australia. Now I need to see it myself.
Fiona: Of course! There are loads of great places to see in Australia. You have to visit the Great Barrier Reef —it's just amazing!
George: And the most interesting place of all is Ayers Rock——the huge red rock in the desert that changes color at dusk.
Host: are all Australians as proud of their country as you are
Fiona and George: They are!

Originally constructed around the 1850s, for many decades the Bund(Wai Tan)in Shanghai was the financial heart of Asia. It was here that ships from all over the world docked along the Huangpu River to load up goods from China. Though Shanghai had an old walled city just south of the Bund, in many ways the Bund seemed more Western than Chinese. The street running along the Bund is a world expo of architecture. Some of these buildings were designed by the premier architects of their era. Even today, several of these buildings-the Custom's House and the Peace Hotel-dominate the waterfront and serve as symbols of old Shanghai. Across the Huangpu River from the old Bund is the new Bund in Pudong, with its modernistic skyline that includes the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Jinmao Tower, the Shanghai World Financial Centre, and Shanghai Tower, all of which declare that Shanghai is once again one of the world's leading financial centres.

Dear Jim,
I am glad to tell you something about pandas. The panda is an iconic animal in China, which has a black and white coat. It has a body shape typical of bears. Its favorite food is tender bamboo. It is known as the national treasure of China. It is one of the few mammals that have been surviving for millions of years on earth. However, it has become an endangered species. Nowadays, a nature reserve located in Sichuan Province has been set up, where pandas can enjoy their life happily. As pandas are well protected, the number of them is increasing every year. Best wishes to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
