ADVICE FROM GRANDDAD
词数:750 文体:应用文 摘自:人教版B6 U3
来看看爷爷给的戒烟建议吧……
Dear James,
It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 kilometers in an afternoon. It's my birthday in two weeks’ time and I’ll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live.
This brings me to the real. reason for my letter, my dear grandson Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time ago and now you are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and became addicted to cigarettes.
By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways First, you can become physically addicted[footnoteRef:1] to nicotine, which is one of the hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes, This means that after a while your body becomes accustomed[footnoteRef:2] to having nicotine in it, So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal[footnoteRef:3] symptoms. I remember feeling bad-tempered and sometimes even in pain. Secondly, you become addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thing over and over again, you begin to do it automatically, Lastly, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happier and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to think that 1 could only feel good when I smoked, I was addicted in all three ways, so it was very difficult to quit. But I did finally manage. [1: addicted adj. unable to stop taking harmful drugs, or using or doing something as a habit ] [2: accustom v. be familiar with something and accept it as normal or usual] [3: withdrawal n. withdrawal is the period during which someone feels ill after they have stopped taking a drug which they were addicted to
]
When I was young, I didn’t know much about the harmful effects of smoking. I didn’t know, for example, that it could do terrible damage to your heart and lungs or that it was more difficult for smoking couples to become pregnant. I certainly didn’t know their babies may have a smaller birth weight or even be abnormal in some way. Neither did 1 know that my cigarette smoke could affect the health of non- smokers. However, what 1 did know was that my girlfriend thought I smelt terrible. She said my breath and clothes smelt. and that the ends of my fingers -were turning yellow. She told me that she wouldn't go out with me again unless 1 stopped! 1 also noticed that 1 became breathless quickly, and that I wasn’t enjoying sport as much. When I was taken off the school football team because I was unfit, I knew it was time to quit smoking.
I am sending you some advice I found on the Internet. It might help you to stop and strengthen your resolve. I do hope so because I want you to live as long and healthy a life as I have.
Love from,
Granddad

词数:523 文体:记叙文 摘 自:北师大版B1 M1
怎样完美地度过一天?
A Couch Potato
Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day.
When I wake up I don’t get up immediately, I turn on the television and watch the children’s programmes and old movies until about half-past ten. Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the TV in the living room. For lunch.I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film - they’re showing some good ones at the moment. In the evenings, I often watch TV series or sport and the news again. I like the main news at six o’clock. At nine thirty if there is a good play on BBC 2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night, I watch more films and I usually switch[footnoteRef:8] off the TV at about two o’clock. I never watch TV all night. [8: switch v. to change or make something change from one thing to another ]
I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don’t go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable[footnoteRef:9] TV and I sit on the stone wall while the dog walks around in a circle. [9: portable adj. that is easy to carry or to move ]
Of course, I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. She’s not here now because she’s working, but she always makes my meals. We haven’t got much money, you know, but we’re happy. Sit down and watch TV. Here’s the remote control. You’ve got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great!
A Workaholic
Thirty-six-year-old Bob Black is sitting at his desk and working his way through his paperwork.
I normally wake up about five minutes before my alarm clock goes off. As soon as 1 hear my alarm clock, I jump out of my bed. It takes me less than fifteen minutes to wash, get changed, have breakfast, leave home and get on a bus.
I am always the first person to get to the office. The mornings are always very busy and the afternoons are even busier! Meetings and phone calls take up a large part of the day. Every minute of the day is filled with urgent[footnoteRef:10] matters. By around eight o’clock, I usually find some time to do my own paperwork and answer some personal e-mails. [10: urgent adj. that needs to be dealt with or happen immediately ]
When I get home at about ten, I look at some documents that I bring back from the office so that I can be ready for the next day’s work. I get to bed around midnight when my wife and children are already asleep.
I seldom have time for fun and other activities with my family. My family complains about it. But I try to work hard so that I can make more money for them. Besides, I get bored if there’s nothing to do. I like being busy.

Controlling your food longings and dropping pounds fast is easy: Just eat breakfast. The editors of Eat This, Not That! carried out researches to determine some best breakfast food for weight loss.
Black Beans
Protein, per 1/2 cup: 7g
Black beans will not only fill you up for hours but also help slim you down. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center researchers found that with black beans consumed daily, study participants’ fat reduced by 4 percent over two years.

Almond Butter

“Almond butter is high in protein, fiber and monounsaturated fats,” says Martha McKittrick, RDN, CDE. “Studies have also shown that people who eat nuts are less likely to become overweight than those who avoid them, likely because it helps you feel fuller.” To get the benefits at breakfast, McKittrick suggests spreading some nut butter on the whole grain toast.
Eggs
Protein, per two large eggs: 13g
“Eggs are an excellent source of protein and other healthy nutrients including fat-burning choline(胆碱),” says McKittrick. Choline, also found in lean meats, seafood and collard greens, attacks the gene mechanism that causes your body to store fat around your liver, according to Zero Belly Cookbook. Kids seem to spend endless hours on smartphones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.
There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness—or myopia as it’s officially known—over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue. “The main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing shortsightedness.”
Professor Hammond says, “It may be there’s no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all relate may to be the that maths league tables(排名表). These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying close up. Therefore the concern is that all close work—like playing with the iPhone—carries the potential that it could make them more shortsighted.”
The best thing to do, say the experts, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. “In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming short-sighted in children. Healthy diet is really also important—in terms of getting oily fish, green vegetables, green leafy vegetables as much as possible.
“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these activities have on their visual development.” Professor Hammond said, “There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isn’t any data out there at the moment in terms of the question, ‘Could the drops we use slow progression or stop myopia developing at all ‘ ”
5.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Much natural light. B. Running around outside.
C. Computers or smartphones. D. Less exposure to sunshine.
6.What does Professor Hammond think of short-sightedness among East Asian children
A. It appears quite by chance. B. It is not serious enough.
C. It largely relate to iPad or iPhone. D. It connects with their study pressure.
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The myopic students will decrease in the future.
B. Researchers have found methods to reduce myopia.
C. It’s still a hard job to control the children’s myopia.
D. Researchers needn’t collect any more data on myopia.
8.What is the best title for the text
A. Common troubles of students B. Problems caused by short-sightedness
C. Staying outdoors more to keep good eyesight D. The importance of protecting kids

Unhealthy diets are responsible for preventable deaths globally per year, more even than smoking tobacco, according to a major study.
“But the biggest problem is not the junk we eat but the nutritious food we don’t eat,” say researchers, calling for a global shift in policy to promote vegetables, fruit, nuts and beans. While sugar and trans-fats are harmful, more deaths are caused by the absence of healthy foods in our diet. Heart attacks are the main diet-related causes of death, followed by cancers and diabetes (糖尿病).
The study found that eating and drinking better could prevent one in five deaths around the world. “Rather than trying to persuade people to cut down on sugar, salt and fat, which has been the main focus of diet policy debate in the past two decades, it would be better to promote healthy options. Adoption of diets emphasizing beans and other healthy plant sources of protein, for instance, will have important benefits for human health,” note the researchers.
The study is the most comprehensive analysis on the health effects of diet ever conducted. It looked at 15 different nutrients, giving detailed knowledge of the analysis and summary of the risk factors of them.
Tom Sanders, a professor of nutrition and dietetics (饮食学), said the analysis put too much emphasis on individual components rather than the overall diet. “Overweight is a major driver for risk of diabetes as well as cancer and the health evidence for this relationship is strong. Overweight is caused by eating more food energy than required rather than specific dietary components such as sugar. The trend for populations to sit too much is a major reason why there is an imbalance between energy intake and consumption but Increased availability of foods with high calories makes it too easy to overeat.”
9. What do the researchers think is the best way to lower preventable death rate
A. Restricting junk food. B. Trying to eat healthily.
C. Avoiding risk factors. D. Adopting high-calorie diets.
10. What’s the major concern of the current diet policy
