Step 1. Lead-in
Show a picture about Halloween and ask the students:
Which festival is it? How do people celebrate it?
Do you want to know?
Step 2. Presentation
Present the new words with some pictures.
Then read the new words.
Step 3. Fast reading
Read the letter as quickly as you can and tell us who wrote it and who received it?
(It’s from Wendy to Millie.)
Tell them not to read all the letter, just read the beginning and the end.
Step 4. First reading
Let the students read the letter fast and answer the two questions:
(1) When is Halloween? (It’s on October 31st.)
(2) What costume will Wendy wear? (A tiger costume.)
Step 4. Second reading
Ask the students to read the article carefully and underline all the things that people do for Halloween in the letter. They can discuss in pairs.
What do people do for Halloween?
(1). The children play a game called “trick or treat”
(2). They dress up at Halloween.
(3). They make pumpkin lanterns for Halloween.
(4). They have a party on the evening of October 31st.
Step 5. Listening and reading the paragraphs one by one
1. Let the students read the first paragraph after the tape. Then match the words.

2. Read the second paragraph and answer the questions:
(1).What game do children play for Halloween? (They play a game called”trick or treat”.)

3. Read the third and fourth paragraph and judge true or false.

1. In pairs, students fill in the blanks. Ask some students to read out the different paragraphs. Check for correct answers and pronunciation.
3. Divide the class into pairs and ask them to make a writing plan using Millie’s writing plan. Encourage them to find information about their chosen festival from the library, the Internet… The plan should be done in class, but the research can be done as homework.
4. Tell students that they should focus on the content, the information they want to put across. They should also choose the right vocabulary to describe a particular festival.
5. Tell students to discuss the content of their writing plan with a classmate before they make their poster.
