W: On September 16th, 2021, a group of “ordinary” people blasted off into space on the first space mission with no professional astronauts. The mission, called Inspiration 4, was the idea of a billionaire Jared Isaacman, who paid the company SpaceX to arrange the flight. He’s a pilot who has flown different kinds of airplanes. Mr. Isaacman decided to use the trip to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Haley Arceneaux, 29, was a cancer patient at St. Jude when she was a child. Ms. Arceneaux works at St. Jude as a physician’s assistant, helping patients and assisting doctors. She is the youngest American to fly into orbit. The capsule has room for four crew members. Mr. Isaacman’s company held a contest to fill one of the spots. The position was won by Dr. Sian Proctor, a college professor who was nearly chosen as a NASA astronaut in 2009. The Inspiration 4 mission orbited 360 miles (575 km) above the Earth. That was about 93 miles higher than the International Space Station.

So few adults can remember the details of their own preschool or kindergarten years, it can be hard to appreciate just how much the early-education landscape has been transformed over the past two decades. The changes are not restricted to the physical environment of classrooms. Teaching methods and curricula have changed too. Much greater parts of the day are now spent on what’s called “seatwork”(a term that probably doesn’t need any explanation) and direct instruction, formerly used mainly in the older grades, in which a teacher carefully controls the content and pacing of what a child is supposed to learn.
One study, titled “Is Kindergarten the New First Grade ” compared kindergarten teachers’ attitudes nationwide in 1998 and 2010 and found that the percentage of teachers expecting children to know how to read by the end of the year had risen from 30 to 80 percent. The researchers also reported more time spent with workbooks and worksheets, and less time devoted to music and art. Kindergarten is indeed the new first grade, the authors concluded. In turn, children who would once have used the kindergarten year as a gentle transition into school are in some cases being held back before they’ve had a chance to start.
Until recently, school-readiness skills weren’t high on anyone’s agenda, nor was the idea that the youngest learners might be disqualified from moving on to the next stage. But now that kindergarten serves as a gatekeeper, not a welcome mat, to elementary school, concerns about school preparedness kick in earlier and earlier. A child who’s supposed to read by the end of kindergarten had better be getting ready in preschool. As a result, expectations that may arguably have been reasonable for 5- and 6-year-olds, such as being able to sit at a desk and complete a task using pencil and paper, are now directed at even younger children, who Jack the motor skills and attention span to be successful.
Preschool classrooms have become increasingly difficult spaces, with teachers asking pre-schoolers to finish their “work” before they can go play. And yet, even as pre-schoolers are learning more pre-academic skills at earlier ages, I’ve heard many teachers say that they seem somehow less curious and less engaged than the kids of earlier generations. More children today seem to lack the language skills needed to retell a simple story or to use basic connecting words and prepositions. They can’t make a conceptual analogy between, say, the veins(纹理) on a leaf and the veins in their own hands.
That’s right. The same educational policies that are publishing academic goals down to ever earlier levels seem to be contributing to the fact that young children are gaining fewer skills, not more.
24.What can be inferred from the sentence “Kindergarten is indeed the new first grade”
A.Kindergarten is going to replace the first grade in the future.
B.Kindergarten kids are asked to learn what first-graders learn.
C.Today’s kindergarten kids are smarter than first graders in the past.
D.Some kids choose to skip kindergarten to go to the first grade directly.
25.By “kindergarten serves as a gatekeeper”, the writer implies that some kindergarten kids________.
A.might not be able to go to the kindergarten
B.are worried about their school-readiness skills
C.are not allowed to move on to elementary school
D.think of the kindergarten year as a gentle transition
26.What idea does the writer intend to convey in Paragraph 4
A.Pre-schoolers need to be academically prepared.
B.Preschool teachers are not as kind as they used to be.
C.Today’s preschool education doesn’t prove successful.
D.Children pick up their first language later than before.
27.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A.What Preschool Kids Should Be Taught
B.How the New Preschool Is Damaging Kids
C.Why We Should Take Preschoolers Seriously
D.Who Is to Blame for Preschoolers’ Lack of Skills
根据第二段中的“One study, titled ‘Is Kindergarten the New First Grade ’ compared kindergarten teachers’ attitudes nationwide in 1998 and 2010 and found that the percentage of teachers expecting children to know how to read by the end of the year had risen from 30 to 80 percent. The researchers also reported more time spent with workbooks and worksheets, and less time devoted to music and art.(一项题为‘幼儿园是新一年级吗?’
根据画线词所在句的前一句“Until recently, school-readiness skills weren’t high on anyone’s agenda, nor was the idea that the youngest learners might be disqualified from moving on to the next stage.(直到最近,入学准备技能还没有成为任何人议程上的重点,最年轻的学生可能会被取消进入下一阶段的资格这种想法也并不多。)”
根据第四段中的“And yet, even as pre-schoolers are learning more pre-academic skills at earlier ages, I’ve heard many teachers say that they seem somehow less curious and less engaged than the kids of earlier generations.(然而,尽管学龄前儿童在更早的时候就开始学习更多的学前技能,但我听到许多老师说,他们似乎没有前几代的孩子那么好奇,也没有那么投入。)”
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“The same educational policies that are publishing academic goals down to ever earlier levels seem to be contributing to the fact that young children are gaining fewer skills, not more.(同样的教育政策将学业目标降到了更早的水平,这似乎导致了幼儿获得的技能越来越少,而不是越来越多)”可知,本篇文章主要论述了“揠苗助长”式的幼儿教育对学龄前的孩子造成了伤害,过早开始给幼儿灌输学龄孩子才需掌握的技能并没有给孩子带来好处。
C
Despite its benefits, drinking milk into adulthood, let alone other animals’ milk, is a strange behavior in the animal kingdom. What makes it even stranger is that an estimated 68 percent of the global human population is actually lactose (乳糖) intolerant. Scientists are still getting to the bottom of why the practice began and continued. This research could unlock new understandings of our food cultures and even our DNA.
The earliest evidence of animal milk drinking dates back almost 9. 000 years to modern-day Turkey near the sea of Marmara. where milk fats have been found on ancient pottery. According to Jessica Hendy. a scientist at the University of York. then milk would have been part of a diverse diet for it was mixed with other food. From its origins, the technology of making use of milk spread into the Caucasus and then across Europe. By the Bronze Age, people may have been using cow’s milk to feed their babies.
For a long time, researchers believed that milk drinking changed as a cultural practice hand in hand with the spread of genetic mutations (变异) that allowed people to tolerate milk into adulthood. But one recent finding suggests milk drinking occurred before these mutations and might not even require them. In Europe. people appear to have been drinking milk for thousands of years before any genetic ability to drink milk became common. The ancient cheese making equipment might offer part of the solution: Fermenting (发酵) milk into yogurt. cheese, or other products reduces the amount of lactose. In Mongolia. researchers have not yet found a genetic mutation that allows people to digest lactose, despite the major role of milk in that culture. So some scientists held that there might be other potential factors helping.
What we do know about the history of milk reveals how wrong-headed one-size-fits-all nutritional guidance can be. In modern America. milk drinking has been presented as a universal good. In reality, how milk is prepared can change the nutritional picture, and how much our bodies process depends, at least in part. on our own genes.
28.What can we learn about milk drinking from paragraph 2
A.It used to be a symbol of identity. B.It initially started with little babies.
C.It was the key diet of ancient people. D.It has been a human tradition for long.
29.Why does the author mention Europe in paragraph 3
A.To give a suggestion. B.To define a concept.
C.To make a prediction. D.To clarify a finding.
30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Milk consumption functions as a cure-all.
B.Milk intake varies from person to person.
C.Milk’s nutritional value is beyond imagination.
D.One’s milk digestive ability changes constantly.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Mystery of Drinking Milk
B.The Process of Genetic Mutations
C.The Phenomenon of Lactose Intolerance
D.The Technology of Making Milk Products

由文章第二段“The earliest evidence of animal milk drinking dates back almost 9,000 years”(饮用动物奶的最早证据可以追溯到近九千年前的现代土耳其马尔马拉海附近。)
根据第三段中“ In Europe. people appear to have been drinking milk for thousands of years before any genetic ability to drink milk became common. The ancient cheese making equipment might offer part of the solution: Fermenting (发酵) milk into yogurt. cheese, or other products reduces the amount of lactose.”(在欧洲。 以及“one recent finding suggests milk drinking occurred before these mutations and might not even require them.”(但最近的一项发现表明,喝牛奶发生在这些突变之前,甚至可能不需要它们。)
由文章最后一段“What we do know about the history of milk reveals how wrong-headed one-size-fits-all nutritional guidance can be.”(我们对牛奶历史的了解揭示了一刀切的营养指导是多么错误。)以及“In reality, how milk is prepared can change the nutritional picture, and how much our bodies process depends, at least in part. on our own genes.”(事实上,牛奶的制备方式可以改变营养状况,而我们的身体消化多少取决于,至少部分取决于。
根据第一段中“What makes it even stranger is that an estimated 68 percent of the global human population is actually lactose (乳糖) intolerant.”(更奇怪的是,据估计全球 68% 的人口实际上患有乳糖不耐症。)、第二段中“The earliest evidence of animal milk drinking dates back almost 9,000 years”(饮用动物奶的最早证据可以追溯到近九千年前的现代土耳其马尔马拉海附近。)以及最后一段中“researchers have not yet found a genetic mutation that allows people to digest lactose, despite the major role of milk in that culture. So some scientists held that there might be other potential factors helping.” 故选A项。

If you live in a region where winter weather is a regular risk, you are likely used to pouring salt on your sidewalks. But how does it work And how much salt do humans pour onto our planet’s surface The second question is easier to answer: a lot.
Salt doesn’t directly melt ice, nor does it make snow simply disappear. Instead it makes water less likely to freeze in a phenomenon called freezing point depression. In the case of simple rock salt, which is a rawer, less pure version of table salt, each molecule (分子) splits into smaller elements. Normally, when water freezes into ice, its molecules line up to form a stable, orderly structure. Salt interrupts the process, however, and temperatures must drop lower to overcome that interruption and for freezing to occur.
But if salt needs to interact with liquid water, how does it do anything when temperatures are stubbornly below freezing, and water should already be in the form of ice That’s where cars help clear their own way by creating friction and, in turn, heat. The friction allows for the ice that has already frozen to melt a little bit, making it unlikely to freeze.
Beyond rock salt’s ability to clear icy streets, it can also be destructive. Chloride ions (氯离子) can cause wear and tear on vehicles and facilities. Increasing chloride densities in North American lakes could begin to upset local ecology and degrade sources of drinking water.
Many local governments are looking for alternatives to rock salt. Other salts such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride work in the same way as rock salt, and they’re perhaps even more efficient. Some experiments are testing other ice-preventing solutions, including those that contain sugars instead of or in addition to salts. 【答案】32.D 33.D 34.A 35.B
根据第二段第一句“Salt doesn’t directly melt ice, nor does it make snow simply disappear.”(盐不会直接融化冰,也不会让雪消失。)以及第二句“Instead it makes water less likely to freeze in a phenomenon called freezing point depression.”(相反,它使水更不容易冻结,这种现象被称为冰点降低。)
根据第二段“Normally, when water freezes into ice, its molecules line up to form a stable, orderly structure. Salt interrupts the process, however, and temperatures must drop lower to overcome that interruption and for freezing to occur.”(正常情况下,当水结冰时,它的分子会排成一行,形成一个稳定有序的结构。
根据划线词所在的句子“Increasing chloride densities in North American lakes could begin to upset local ecology and degrade sources of drinking water.”(北美湖泊中氯化物densities的增加可能会扰乱当地生态,并使饮用水源退化。) 故选A项。
根据最后一段,尤其是“All of this experimentation is aimed at ensuring people can travel in any weather condition…”(所有这些试验都是为了确保人们在任何天气条件下都能出行。)
Even the most positive people have negative thoughts. It’s part of being human. But when negative thoughts become the norm, it isn’t healthy. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to change your negative thoughts into realistic thinking—seeing yourself, your relationships and world events as they really are.
Monitor your self-talk. We all have an ongoing dialogue running in our head, which affects how we view our life. 36 So, to promote realistic thinking, first you need to find out and listen to that inner voice. Being aware of those inner comments starts to help you take control of them.
37 Not every negative thought is “bad”. For example, “I feel stressed and upset about my job because there are so many new things I am learning, but overtime I’ll learn and it’ll get easier.” has a negative aspect, but it promotes a positive action. Therefore, it’s important to make the distinction between helpful thoughts and negative ones.
Challenge your unhelpful thoughts. 38 Continuing with the work example, do you really hate your job or are you just anxious about the new project that you’ve been assigned
39 Now that you’re clear which thought is not helpful, you can replace it with one that is. Using the example from above, a more positive thought might be, “Once I get started on the new project I’m sure I'll do fine. It’s just the anticipation that I don’t like.”
Repeat. Realistic thinking doesn’t come easy, especially when you are also working on managing anxiety, depression, and other problems. 40
A.Identify thoughts that aren’t helpful.
B.Plant positive thoughts in your mind.
C.Analyse what self-talk is the most beneficial.
D.But because it’s constantly running, we often forget it’s there.
E.These thoughts can consume your energy or cause physical problems.
F.To be more realistic, you need to question whether your thoughts are factual.
G.You need to continually return to it even when it feels natural to become negative.

【答案】36.E 37.B 38.F 39.A 40.G
36.根据上文“Monitor your self-talk. We all have an ongoing dialogue running in our head, which affects how we view our life.(监控你的自言自语。我们都有一个持续的对话在我们的脑海中运行,它影响我们如何看待我们的生活。)”可知,本段建议监控自己的自言自语,它们会影响我们的生活,下文“So, to promote realistic thinking, first you need to find out and listen to that inner voice. Being aware of those inner comments starts to help you take control of them.(因此,为了促进现实思维,首先你需要找到并倾听内心的声音。意识到这些内心的评论开始帮助你控制它们。)”说明要采取措施倾听内心的声音,并控制它们,因此推断E项“这些想法会消耗你的精力或导致身体问题。”符合语境,承接上文说明自言自语对生活的具体危害。引出下文要采取措施控制这些自言自语。故选E。
37.空处为段落小标题,概况本段主旨。根据下文“Not every negative thought is "bad". For example, "I feel stressed and upset about my job because there are so many new things I am learning, but overtime I'll learn and it'll get easier." has a negative aspect, but it promotes a positive action. Therefore, it's important to make the distinction between helpful thoughts and negative ones.( 并不是所有消极的想法都是“坏的”。
可知,本段讲述要对抗无益的想法,下文“Continuing with the work example, do you really hate your job or are you just anxious about the new project that you've been assigned (继续以工作为例,你是真的讨厌你的工作,还是只是对分配给你的新项目感到焦虑 )”举例说明如何对抗无益的想法,因此推断F项“要更现实一点,你需要质疑自己的想法是否真实。”
根据下文“Now that you’re clear which thought is not helpful, you can replace it with one that is. Using the example from above, a more positive thought might be, “Once I get started on the new project I’m sure I'll do fine. It’s just the anticipation that I don’t like.”(既然你清楚了哪个想法是没有帮助的,你就可以用一个有用的想法来取代它。用上面的例子,一个更积极的想法可能是,“一旦我开始新项目,我确信我会做得很好。我只是不喜欢这种期待。”)”可知,本段讲述识别那些没有帮助的想法,用有用的想法代替它。因此推断A项“识别那些没有帮助的想法。”为最佳标题。故选A。
Realistic thinking doesn’t come easy, especially when you are also working on managing anxiety, depression, and other problems.( 重复。现实的思考并不容易,尤其是当你还在处理焦虑、抑郁和其他问题的时候。)”可知,要拥有现实的想法并不容易,需要不断地重复去练习,因此推断G项“你需要不断地回到它,即使你觉得变得消极是很自然的”符合语境,continually呼应repeat。故选G。

My family moved from Toowoomba, Canada to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain from the 1950s epidemic of polio She wished to visit specialists in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father bade a tender farewell to his five-year-old “friend” at the dock(码头), an Australian cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas.
Six weeks later, a letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face crumbling and his eyes glistening as he read the letter. We tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Sandy has advertised constantly on ABC radio and other local newspapers. Despite some “sightings” in the dock at first, the dog was never found later. It seems Spider decided to search for us elsewhere.
We sailed back two years later and re-established our home in Toowoomba. My father immediately began his own searching for Spider. Several months passed but there was still no news concerning Spider. The dog was gone, possibly shot or dead from starvation or exhaustion.
One cold morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an old lady who said she was putting food out “for a very old dog”. In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for a few weeks. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework and we set off immediately. When we arrived at the old lady’s house, she invited us into an old bush. Sadly, she then told us that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle(口哨) for Spider.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph 1: Suddenly there was a bark in the bush.

Paragraph 2: From then on, Spider and my father would hang out at the dock.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly there was a bark in the bush. My father jumped out of his seat and ran outside. We heard him calling Spider’s name. We waited nervously inside, praying that Spider would come back to us. After a few minutes, we heard my father’s voice again, louder and more excited this time. He came back inside, holding a thin and ragged-looking Spider in his arms. The dog had a few cuts and scratches on his face and legs, but he was alive. We were overjoyed to see Spider again.
From then on, Spider and my father would hang out at the dock. They would walk along the beach and watch the ships come in and out of the harbor. Spider enjoyed this routine, and my father would tell him stories about all the experiences he had while he was away. Spider was always by his side, faithful and loyal as ever. They had been through so much, but years and vast distances couldn’t break their bond. Spider found his way back to us against all odds. We were grateful to have him back, and we knew that he would always be a cherished member of our family.

B

B.How the New Preschool Is Damaging Kids
C.Why We Should Take Preschoolers Seriously
D.Who Is to Blame for Preschoolers’ Lack of Skills

Another approach relies more heavily on sand, which can mechanically make roads safer. All of this experimentation is aimed at ensuring people can travel in any weather condition — a Herculean task when winter brings its worst.
32.What’s the purpose of the first sentence in Paragraph 2
A.To introduce the topic. B.To give some evidence.
C.To define the phenomenon. D.To reveal the misconception.
33.How does salt work to disturb the process of freezing
A.By lowering the temperature. B.By melting and splitting itself.
C.By lining up to form a solid structure. D.By stopping the formation of the structure.
34.What does the underlined word “densities” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Concentrations. B.Weights. C.Qualities. D.Salts.
35.What’s the last paragraph mainly talking about
A.Other salts won’t disturb local ecology.
B.Efforts are being made to guarantee safe travels.
C.Many alternatives are available to solve the problem.
D.Bitter winter make it impossible to secure road safety.
