Personal Forgiveness
Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don’t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. 36 You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.
In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths.” 37 Are you caring Creative Generous A good listener Fun to be around They don’t have to be world-changing, just aspects of your personality that you’re proud of.
At the top of a second page, put the heading “Acts of kindness.” On this one, list all the positive things you’ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day. 38
You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list. 39 That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.
It’s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. The thing is, it’s true. 40 We’re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.
Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “ 36 ” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37 Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. 38 If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40 Over time, both of you will benefit— your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.

(1)
Writing an essay is a difficult process for most people. However, the process can be made easier if you learn to practice three simple techniques.
36 When you are first trying to think of ideas for an essay, put your pen to your paper and write nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes without letting your pen leave the paper. Stay loose and free. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. Even though this technique won’t work for everyone, it helps many people get a good store of ideas to draw on.
The next technique is to write your draft rapidly without worrying about being perfect. Yet, by learning to live with imperfection, you will save yourself headaches and a wastepaper basket full of crumpled (弄皱) paper. Think of your first draft as a path cut out of the jungle—as part of an exploration, not as a complete highway.
The third technique is to try printing out a triple-spaced (三倍行距) copy to allow space for revision. As a result, these writers never get in the habit of crossing out chunks (大块) of their draft and writing revisions in the blank space. After you have revised your draft until it is too messy to work from anymore, you can enter your changes into your word processor. The resulting blank space invites you to revise.
A. Make sure your handwriting is neat.
B. Let your pen follow the waves of thought.
C. The second draft of the essay should be better.
D. First of all, learn the technique of nonstop writing.
E. Too many writers try to get their drafts right the first time.
F. Many beginning writers don’t leave enough space to revise.
G. Then you can print out a fresh draft, again setting your text on triple-space.

Have you ever caught a smell of something and been strongly reminded of a person or place There seems to be a deep psychological link between smells and our memory. Some research even suggests that smells can influence our cognition(认知,感知).
36 Roja Dove, a perfumer, informed the BBC that when we are born, the olfactory bulb(嗅球),which is the area in our brain that processes smell, is empty, without pre-existing information or association. 37 When we smell an odour again, the original and unique memory comes flooding back because of the association acquired in our previous experience.
Our awareness of smells is primarily unconscious. 38 But, low-level smells are still picked up because the scent receptors( 感受器) in our brain are so powerful that we unconsciously register them. In fact, various studies have found the olfactory bulb sends more neurons(神经元) to more areas of our brain than our hearing or vision.
Research suggests that the power of smell can also affect how the brain performs. 39 Mark Moss at Northumbria University’s Psychology Department discovered that certain essential oils, such as peppermint, positively impact cognition, and rosemary s scent can enhance memory. He also studied lavender, which he says “tends to impair memory and slow reaction time”. But research by others has shown it to be useful in reducing pre treatment anxiety in dental and medical situations.
40 The next time a familiar smell brings back a special memory. just remember that your nose is working wonders.
A. Why do smells take us back
B. So, don’t take your nose for granted.
C. How is the sense of smell connected to your brain
D. Scents can revive memories that have been long forgotten.
E. We are not actively aware of them unless they are extremely strong.
F. This is especially true when it comes to the fragrance of essential oils.
G. Therefore, our responses to smells are learnt and highly individualized.

In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 36 But are all online courses created equal How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you 37
We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses. The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 38 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,”says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in person courses. 39 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
40 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meetings with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines.
B. Your motivation should be your main concern.
C. Do you know that online courses are also part of your education
D. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E. The chief complaint about online courses is that they lack human interaction.
F. If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade
G. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I’m often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I’ve put together some good tips for starting an art journey.
● Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. 36 You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
● Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. 37
● Continually challenge yourself to try something new. 38 Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club; we’ve all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
● 39 Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you're on won’t follow a straight path. 40 Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A. Get out of your comfort zone.
B. Make career plans and set goals.
C. Don’t throw away your beginner art.
D. Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E. You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times.
F. Evaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.
G. You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.

The pleasures of learning
Learning is a natural pleasure, inborn and instinctive (本能的), one of the essential pleasures of the human race. When Archimedes discovered the principle of specific gravity by observing his own displacement of water in a bathtub (浴缸), he jumped out with delight, shouting, “Eureka, Eureka!” (I have found it). 36
This pleasure is not limited to learning from textbooks, which are too often boring. 37 By opening a book, one can connect with a voice for distant in time and space, and hear it speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart. As for reading books, this contains two different delights. One is the pleasure of understanding the unexpected, such as when one meets a new author who has a new vision of the world. 38
Far beyond books, learning means keeping the mind open and active to receive all kinds of experiences. Among the pleasures of learning, we should include travel, travel with an open mind, an alert eye and a wish to understand other peoples, other places, rather than looking in them for a mirror image of oneself.
39 Every new art you learn appears like a new window on the universe, which helps you acquire a new sense. Crafts, too, are well worth exploring. Most crafts contain one essential pleasure, the pleasure of making something that will last.
40 Instead of decreasing, in time, like health and strength, its returns go on increasing, provided that you aim throughout your life, as you continue learning to integrate (整合) your thoughts to make it harmonious.
A. But it does include learning from books.
B. Learning extends our lives into new dimensions (维度).
C. This shout means Archimedes enjoyed playing with water.
D. The other pleasure is of deepening one’s knowledge of a special field.
E. Learning also means learning to practice, or at least to appreciate an art.
F. Man has the ability to attain happiness, and learning is the best way to achieve it.
G. The outburst from instinct and the joy of its satisfaction are possessed by all people.

Hello, 2024. It’s that time of the year again. The start of the new year is a natural time to consider what you may want to do differently, and your goals for the upcoming year. It is a common practice to create New Year’s resolutions. yet are they helpful 36
Reflecting on your behaviors and creating goals that align(使一致) with your values can motivate helpful change. 37 you can experience a sense of meaning and quality of life. However, people don't always approach New Year's resolutions in a helpful way. 38 Do you feel the need to set a goal or make a change based on what someone else would like you to do It can be difficult to implement and maintain a new behavior, even when you genuinely want to do it, let alone when you don’t. Resolutions based on shoulds are not likely to last.
So, if you plan to set a New Year’s resolution, first be honest with yourself about whether the resolution is important and meaningful to you. 39 Have you got an understanding of the value that the resolution is connected to that provides you with a sense of purpose
40 Goals based on unrealistic expectations are unhelpful. If a goal is too large and does not match your current circumstances and resources, success is unlikely, which may fuel self-criticism and make it more challenging to achieve.
Targeting small changes may be more useful than creating one or two large resolutions at the start of the year.
It depends.
B. Do you have a clear why
C. Have you got the details yet
D. If your goals are not specific enough,
E. When you clarify what is important and take steps in that direction
F. Then, be realistic with yourself and create small, specific and doable goals.
G. Resolutions are usually not based on a genuine desire but on a sense of should.

根据空前内容“Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don’t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. 结合空后“You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this. D“It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.
根据空前内容“In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths.” (在日记或纸上写上“个人优点”)以及空后内容“Are you caring Creative Generous A good listener Fun to be around They don’t have to be world-changing, just aspects of your personality that you’re proud of. B“Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.
At the top of a second page, put the heading“Acts of kindness.”On this one, list all the positive things you’ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day. F“Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.
根据空后内容“That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. C“They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise. (他们甚至可能想试一试做练习)”符合语境,C项中的“they”与空前的“You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list. 中的“a friend or family member”保持一致,同时选项C和下文“In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.
根据空前内容“It’s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. The thing is, it’s true. G“Whatever the mistake, remember it isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality. (不管你犯了什么错误,记住这不是你性格中固定的一面)”符合语境,G项中的“isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality”和空后“We’re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.

Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. G“Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

根据上文“When you put them down between bites, always put them down together so they are parallel with the edge of the table in front of you. 由此可知,F项“Never stick them upright in your food or cross them as you use them (不要把它们笔直地插在你的食物中,也不要在使用它们时交叉放置)”讲述的也是使用筷子时的注意事项,符合此处语境,其中“them”指的是上文的“chopsticks”。故选F。

分析设空处,空处位于第二句,此处应是对前一句的进一步解释,并同时引出后文,根据前文“The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path. (你的旅程不会是一条笔直的道路)”以及后文“Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life. 你将收获艺术生活的回报)”可知,E项“You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times.
根据上文“Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic.(感恩有很多好处:研究表明,感恩让我们更快乐,压力更小,甚至更乐观)”以及后文“Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,”said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California.
设空处所在句子的后半句“but long-distance friendships—even close ones—may require more conscious effort to sustain.”(但是异地友谊—甚至是关系亲密的友谊—可能需要更加自觉地去维系。)
空前说“The third technique is to try printing out a triple—spaced (三倍行距) copy to allow space for revision. ,F选项“Many beginning writers don’t leave enough space to revise. 中的“revise”和前面的“revision”一致,指出了新手作者的常见做法,且其中的“Many beginning writers”和后文的“these writers”相互呼应,因此F选项承上启下,和下文的as a result构成因果关系,符合语境,故选F。
I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. 这些小的学习和实践可以提供灵感,并成为未来更复杂的作品的跳板)”以及后文“You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
空前说“After you have revised your draft until it is too messy to work from anymore, you can enter your changes into your word processor. ,空后说“The resulting blank space invites you to revise. ,因此空格处应说输入到文字处理器后应该做什么,G选项“Then you can print out a fresh draft, again setting your text on triple-space.
根据上文“Many of these species (物种) are not ideally suited to growing outside in the UK, especially in the winter.(这些品种中的许多都不适合在英国户外生长,尤其是在冬天)”可知,有些植物不适合在户外寒冷的环境中生长,即适合在温暖的地方生长。 D. Instead, they grow better inside, where it is warmer(相反,它们在温暖的室内生长得更好)能够通过对比关系,承接上文,符合语境。
根据空格处上文“Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking.”及下文“Do you want to be a good public speaker Here are some principles you must master.”
根据上文“There is also research showing that pot plants can clean the air around them by removing harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide. They also remove some harmful chemicals from paints or cooking.(也有研究表明,盆栽植物可以通过去除二氧化碳等有害气体来净化周围的空气。 E. Plants like peace lilies and devil’s tongue are among the best(像和平百合和魔芋之类的植物是最好的)能够承接上文,列举了在这方面做的最好的植物,符合语境。故选E。
