When we talk about English, we often think of it as a single language but like most languages, English has evolved through years of speakers, going through major changes over time. By looking at these changes, we can have a deeper understanding of the language, from the present day back to its ancient roots.
While modern English shares many similar words with romance languages(罗曼斯语), like French and Spanish, most of those words were not originally part of it. Instead, they started coming into the language with the Norman invasion of England in 1066. When the French-speaking Normans conquered(征服) England and became its ruling class, they brought their speech with them, adding a large number of French and Latin words to the English language formerly spoken there. The English used in Beowulf(《贝奥武夫》) probably doesn't look very familiar, but it might be more recognizable if you know some German. That's because Old English belongs to the Germanic language family, first brought to the British Isles(不列颠群岛) in the 5th and 6th centuries by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. The language they spoke would become known as Anglo-Saxon. Viking invaders(维京侵略者) in the 8th to 11th centuries added more borrowings from Old Norse(古斯堪的那维亚语) into the mix.
It may be hard to see the roots of modern English underneath all the words borrowed from French, Latin, Old Norse and other languages. But the amazing fact is that nearly 3 billion people around the world, many of whom cannot understand each other, are speaking the same words shaped by 6000 years of history.
1. What's the passage mainly about
A. The introduction of modem English. B. The study of Old English.
C. The origin of modem English. D. The discussion of the usage of English words.
2. Why does English share many similar words with French
A. The words were part of English at first and then were borrowed into French.
B. The Normans brought those words to the English language.
C. The words were brought to the British Isles in the 5th and 6th centuries.
D. Viking invaders added those words to English.
3. What do the underlined words "has evolved" probably mean
A. has been passed down B. has been invented
C. has gradually developed D. has changed completely
4. Which of the following is correct according to the passage
A. English is a single language.
B. English has its only root in romance languages.
C. English is actually a mixture of several languages.
D. There are 3 billion English speakers in the world.

Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. "Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers," she says. However her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that's pretty powerful.

A. She helped her dad with his work. B. She ran the family farm on her own.
C. She supported herself through college. D. She taught her sisters and brothers at home.
2. Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield
A. To take care of her kids easily. B. To learn from the best nurses.

3. What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal
A. Her health. B. Her time with family.
C. Her reputation. D. Her chance of promotion.
4. What can we learn from Jennifer's story

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was ten years old, when some people from a nearby government school came and told my parents that they should send me to a one-year education camp.
My parents replied, "What's the use Education never got us villagers anywhere. What good will it do to a girl Girls should stay at home and learn household work. That comes in handy when they get married. And anyway, how can we send our child so far away all by herself for a whole year "
But the people persuaded my parents. They said there would be about a hundred girls coining from different villages and all of them would be safe and taken care of well. My parents agreed finally. They felt that if other families sent their girls, they would also have to.
My friend, Mala, was going too. We were the only two girls from our village, Swaroop ka Talaab. We would sit in the evenings and wonder how things would be in an unknown place. Once, Mala asked me, "Will there be any sand dunes(沙丘) there " I didn't understand her question. How could any place in the world not have sand dunes I have traveled far with my goats, sitting on hills and looking at the desert beyond. For miles and miles there is only sand.
The day before leaving home, I was very nervous. I had dreamt of going to this unknown place but I couldn't imagine living without my parents and goats. They would surely miss me. My mother was sad too. With tears in her eyes, she packed my clothes and wrapped snacks for me.
When they took me away, I sobbed the whole way. I kept crying for the first few days in the camp. Then gradually, I started making friends with the other girls. There were so many girls. We would all study together, play together, eat together and sleep together. Sometimes, my parents would send me clothes and food. I also sent messages telling them not to worry and that I was well.
At the end of the term, I studied hard for the examination.

Paragraph 1:
At the end of the term, I studied hard for the examination. I passed the fifth standard examination. The teachers were very happy with me. I was happy too because it was time to go back home. But I was also sad as I would never again see the new friends I had made here. We hardly slept the last night in the camp. While we packed, we kept talking and crying as we would soon part.
Paragraph 2:
When Mala and I went back home, we became different persons. My parents were overjoyed to see me and I met my goats again. Everyone in the village came and asked me how the camp was. When I told them how good it was and how much we had learnt, they decided to send their daughters the next time. We often talked about much fun we had in the camp. I decided to go to school to study more.
