4. surprise
① 使惊奇,使惊愕
His anger surprised me —I had thought he was a calm person.

常与at 连用,惊呆;使难以置信
He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away.

9. in a mess 混乱;杂乱;肮脏 如:

leave alone 在意为“防止干扰”这一意义
时,可以替代 let alone 。 如:
Leave him alone and he will produce.
别打扰他,他会写出来的。
Left alone, he was quite productive. 别打扰他,他相当有创作才能。

in charge of … 负责……
in the charge of=in one’s charge 由……负责
take charge of 负责 如:
—Who is in charge of the factory?
—Mr. Li will take charge of the project.
=The project is in his charge.

此处是 have something done的结构,表使……处于……状态。
① 有某种遭遇或经历

④表示“让某人做某事”有几种表达方法:

be upset about sth./that …
为……难过,不高兴
1) She was upset that he had left without saying goodbye.
2) It is no using getting upset about it.
Upset 也可以为动词,使……烦恼,心烦
如:This decision is likely to upset a lot of people.
12. They don’t deserve an explanation.
此句表示“他们不配得到解释”;deserve意为“应该得到、应受(赏罚等) ”。
如:These people deserve our help.
这些人值得我们帮助。
deserve 可以接to do/to be done的结构,如:
They really worked hard and they deserve to be rewarded(回报,奖赏).13. Do you think we were too hard on Daniel?
be hard on sb. 对某人严厉,对某人苛刻 继母对白雪公主很苛刻。
