An experience in the lift电梯惊魂
试题呈现:
When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby(电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs. Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs. Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里的).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have Mrs. Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs. Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

Several minutes passed, but no help came. With the air in the lift getting stuffy and the darkness swallowing me, I felt anxiety and nervousness growing inside me. But I clearly knew all we could do was wait for the rescue. I turned to Mrs. Lim, who was suffering and struggling in this limited pressing space, and had her sit down on the lift floor with her back against the wall. To get her further distracted from the situation, I struck up conversations with the old lady, asking her to share her family, her life story and more anecdotes, which made her feel better. Listening to the old lady and looking through the lift door from time to time, I felt time passing fast and help on the way.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. The bang sound, which used to sound annoying and frightening to me, now became so ear-pleasing. Hope of being rescued ignited, I told Mrs. Lim the exciting news, helped her to her feet and waited for the lift door to open. The firefighters, with their quick action and expertise, soon got us out of the trap, which rested our hearts back in place. Once out, we expressed our heartfelt gratitude to these brave helpers, without whom we might have to stay much longer. But what I didn’t expect was that the firefighters praised me for my calmness and proper response in the face of emergency. Their praise, like a torch, left my boring day and the terrible experience in the lift behind and brightened up my world.

Several minutes passed, but no help came. The air-conditioning had died out, and the lift became really stuffy. We were sweating buckets. We tried to ring the emergency alarm again. Every second that passed was painful “Help!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, trying to get someone's attention. A wave of despair washed over me. I felt like we would never make it. In one last effort, I tried banging on the doors. The next few minutes felt like hours as we waited in complete silence.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Help was finally here! The brave firefighters hit the doors open using their tools. It felt like a hundred pound weight was lifted off me, and Mrs. Lim thanked the heavens that someone had come to our rescue. I made a sigh of relief when the doors were finally opened and all this drama was over. The firefighter praised me for helping Mrs. Lim. I returned their praise with gratitude and Mrs. Lim thanked me and even gave me a hug.
考试作弊
Mr. Ward couldn’t stand students cheating the most. Whenever there was an exam, he watched very closely, making sure no act of cheating was neglected, and any student who cheated would be seriously punished.
I remember many times after tests, Mr Ward found that the students sitting around me had better scores than the others and the further away a student was from me, the worst his grade. Mr. Ward suspected that some of the juniors “accidentally” got some of my answers.
So he and I had a very interesting talk about cheating.
Mr. Ward once told me of some of the ways students tried to cheat. Student A intentionally “dropped” his pencil an unusually far distance from his desk. So he stood up and walked slowly across the room to take it back. On the way, he glanced at the papers. Student B got a piece of paper and wrote down all the formulas (公式) on a tiny bit of paper taped to the inside of the kid’s palm. These incidents weren’t very rare.
The last day of the entire school year, all I had left was my math exam and there seemed to be some definite tension in the air because this was the biggest test of the year. I saw some kids trying to do some last minute studying, some trying to calm themselves down by breathing slowly and some saying a silent prayer.
Mr. Ward went to the front and started handing out the tests by rows. After explaining the rules of the test, he said very clearly and concisely, “If you cheat, I will take your test and tear it up. You will get a 0 for the biggest grade of the year.” Mr. Ward moved very effortlessly and efficiently about the room and during every test he went into a sort of RADAR mode (雷达模式). He sat at the front and watch the room for anything that might look like cheating. During this RADAR mode, if you were cheating, you would be caught. Guaranteed.
Para. 1: Our test started and we were sitting there busy working on our papers.
Para. 2: Then Mr. Ward asked the kid he was watching to go to his office.
基础版:
Our test started and we were sitting there busy working on our papers. Given the importance of the test, all students put in a lot of effort to write down their answers. I was relieved when I finished easily. As I put down my pencil and looked up, I was surprised to see a kid stretching his neck to sneak a look at other students’ answers. He was cheating! I was unsure of what to do when I saw Mr. Ward looking at the kid with anger in his eyes.
Then Mr. Ward asked the kid he was watching to go to his office. The kid, feeling embarrassed and scared, slowly moved into the office. In front of the stern Mr. Ward, the kid stood still and silent, his head hanging low and his body shaking uncontrollably. Eventually, he was overwhelmed with guilt, tears of regret streaming down his face. In a tearful voice, he confessed(承认) to cheating in the test. Mr. Ward’s expression softened slightly. He gently patted the kid’s head and said seriously, “Honesty is the most important thing!” The kid nodded in understanding. Despite receiving a failing grade, the kid learned a valuable lesson about honesty.

Work with Charlie for a book fair
试题呈现:
Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor (主办者) for it. Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning. set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr. Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie Lyons.
Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match.
At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine.
Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, "Everything's cool. "
On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, "Charlie, what's wrong "

He responded in despair, “There are a lot more books here than I expected.” My first reaction to his response was that it was none of my business as we had already been assigned to separate tasks. But just as I was about to go off, another voice in my heart told me to help him out, thinking we were actually devoted to the same project. Immediately, I called my group and together we sprang into action. The next two hours witnessed our joint efforts to tear the boxes open, have the books categorized and place them where they were to go. Seeing all the books in place, Charlie heaved a sigh of relief, really grateful for our timely and generous support. And miraculously, the previous social distance between us now somehow transformed into closer communication. The book fair turned out to be a great success.
After the book fair was over, I couldn't stop wondering why Mr. Egan put us together. With the puzzle haunting my mind, I went to Mr. Egan’s office. “We once worked as partners in last science project, which failed to live up to our expectations. So I can’t understand your pairing us up,” I asked eagerly, expecting his answer. At this, Mr. Egan, instead of answering my question, threw me his question, “But what do you think led to the success of the book fair ”, which set me thinking. Only at this moment did I realize that it was our mutual help and effective communication that made the fair a success. And only at this moment did I realize that it was the lack of communication that led to the failure in the last science project. Mr. Egan’s question and the enlightening experience planted a seed of cooperation and communication in my heart and would guide me on the future path.

He responded in despair, “There are a lot more books here than I expected.” My initial impulse was to say, “This is your mess. Figure it out yourself.” But instead I said, “Let me see if I can get some help.” Charlie nodded, appreciating the support. Then, we, together with other helpers, rolled up our sleeves and started sorting them by genre. Hours passed by as we worked side by side. Slowly but surely, the chaos began to transform into a perfect fair, and our avoidance of contact into smooth communication. I was surprised that the book fair was a success and even more surprised that we could actually work well together.
After the book fair was over, I couldn’t stop wondering why Mr. Egan put us together. I approached him, eager to figure out his intention of this unlikely pairing. However, his reply was quite simple, “I knew that this would be a great experience for both of you. It wasn’t so much about running the book fair as it was a lesson in how important it is to communicate and to work alongside others when necessary.” Hearing what he said and thinking of what happened between Charlie and me, I couldn’t help but smile. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned amidst the challenges we face and the people we least expect to be our allies.
