教学过程
Step 1: Lead students to have a revision of “the -ing form and past participle used as the adverbial”. (1)Read the following sentences and identify the function of the -ing form. How could I refuse that trust, saying I’m cold, hungry or tired Her brother complained, thinking of the high tuition fees. What is the function of saying and thinking Now, think about the following two questions. What’s the logic subject of the -ing form What’s the relationship between the -ing form and its logic subject Active or passive Let’s look at them one by one. What about the first one Good! The logic subject is “I”, and it’s an “active” relationship. Here “saying” means “by saying, that is, by saying I’m cold, hungry or tired ”. So this is an adverbial of manner. Her brother complained, thinking of the high tuition fees. Yes. Her brother is the logic subject and there is an active relationship between her brother and thinking. Can we change “thinking” into a clause --Yes. Her brother complained, when he thought of the high tuition fees. So “thinking” is an adverbial. Let’s look at another two sentences. Given more encouragement, the boy could have behaved better. Written in a hurry, the article was not so good. What is the function of given and written --Yes, adverbial. --Then what about the logic subject and the relationship between the past participle and its logic subject --You’re right. In the first sentence, “the boy” is the logic subject, and there is passive relationship between “given” and “the boy”; “given” means “If he was given...” (so this is an adverbial of condition.) The second sentence:Written in a hurry, the article was not so good. “The article” is the logic subject. Also, passive relationship. Obviously “written in a hurry” can be replaced by “Because it was written in a hurry,” so this is an adverbial of reason. (2) Make a summary about “the -ing form and past participle used as the adverbial”. Step 2 Lead students to have a revision of “the -ing form and past participle used as the object complement”. (1)What’s the function of the -ing form and the past participle The new People’s Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role. We can hear the windows beaten by the heavy rain drops. So, what is the function of “playing and beaten” -- Yes, they serve as the object complement, which are used to describe the actions or situation of the object. The new People’s Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role. Here “playing” is used to describe the action of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi. Dr. Lin Qiaozhi is the object of the whole sentence. “Playing” is used as the object complement. What about the logic subject and its relationship with “playing” -- Active relationship. Sentence number 2. We can hear the windows beaten by the heavy rain drops. -- The logic subject of the past participle “beaten” is “the windows”. We know “The windows were being beaten by the heavy rain drops.” Therefore, this is a passive relationship. (2) Make a summary about “the -ing form and past participle used as the object complement”. Step 3 Ask students to do some exercises to practice what they have reviewed. Circle the correct word in each sentence. Number 1: forgetting or forgotten, which one is correct Yes, forgetting. The logic subject is Jack. The action “forget” is from Jack. So this is an active relationship. Obviously “forgetting” is correct. It’s an adverbial. Number 2: “The girl” is the logic subject, and there is an active relationship between them. Then the correct word is “seeing”. Seeing is an adverbial. Number 3: “their son” is the logic subject, and there is a passive relationship between them. Then the correct word is “awarded”. It is an object complement. Number 4: “many people” is the logic subject, and there is a passive relationship between them. Then the correct word is “asked”. It is an adverbial. Number 5: There are two -ing forms. Let’s look at them one by one. “The woman” is the logic subject of “talking”, and there is an active relationship between them. “talking” is an object complement, and it is the correct word. “thinking” is the second correct, because its logic subject is John, and there is an active relationship between them; “thinking” is an adverbial. Number 6: “the manager” is the logic subject, passive relationship, “Impressed” is used as an plete the passage with the correct forms of the words below. Then answer the question: What is the author’s attitude toward the doctor Step 4 Reflect on what the students have learned with the help of the checklist. Step 5 Homework: Finish the exercises of workbook on Page67-68.
