Step 1 Before writing
Read the introduction to Yang Jingyu and answer the questions:
Who was Yang Jingyu
Why did Yang decide to let small groups of his men break through the encirclement
What did the Japanese find when they killed Yang
How would you describe Yang’s spirit in your own words
Step 2 While writing
Work in groups. Talk about other war heroes and choose one to write about. Finish Activity 6 on P47
Write an introduction to the war hero you chose.
Step 3 Post-reading
Make improvements to each other’s writings and share them with the class.

Dong Cunrui was born in Hebei Province, in 1929 and joined the Communist Party of China in March 1947. On May 25,1948, the company Dong Cunrui shouldered the task of blowing up an enemy fort on a bridge. The troops tried several times but failed. Then Dong came out bravely, carrying an explosive package in his hands, and rushed towards the bridge. He lifted the explosive package by left hand and pulled the fuse by right hand, successfully destroying the fort. Although sacrificing his 19-year-old life, he opened a way for the troops.
That's why I say Dong Cunrui is a real hero in my mind. His heroic acts will be remembered forever.
